I’m not sure where we were, but I did know that cruiser was most likely flying away from where My fireteam and I were captured. If we could make it back to the escape pods, we could perhaps signal for help. Not sure what the UNSC would think about Lar ‘Lasem however.
Lar was stomping off around the lake most likely looking to get his armor from the water. He didn’t seem too happy on working together here. Even if we were already well acquainted in the past.
And to address to myself that we slept together in the past. He and I were brief lovers you could say. That happened years ago however, and it was brief for what it was. Hadn’t seen him since those few days we spoke.
I one time had confided in an old friend that I had an extreme attraction to Elites. But that ended up getting me the nick name “Squid Face Slut”. Once I was moved out of that place, It stopped. Luckily it never came back up.
Even after 6 years, I’ll admit… Lar ‘Lasem was still very attractive to me. A characteristic, which I have found in other Elites for the record. But not as much as him. I can never help but think about him from time to time.
I shake myself out of my thoughts and walk towards him. “Lar, I know you aren’t keen on working together but we’re both gonna die in this god forsaken jungle unless we work together!”
He shoots me a look. “You wanna survive? Then maybe you shouldn’t have tossed my gear into the water!”
“To save your life” I recoiled “I’ll get them back for you if you need them.” Lar huffed.
“Very well Tom. Go get my gear back!” He almost smirked and gestured me to get in the water. I oblige and dive into the water to grab his gear. Getting everything together, I slowly but surely swim them back to land. At the shore are those Sangheili feet in front of me as I drag his gear out of the water.
“Surprised you didn’t ditch me.” I stand up to face him. Sure I need to look up at him but after a small look from him, he went around me and began putting his gear back on.
“I care more about survival then my own pride in leaving you here.” He puts his helmet back on and looks at me.
“Any reason why your so… hostile with me?” He steps forwards.
“We aren’t supposed to be friends Tom. So I’m just making sure it stays that way. I may have been a lot more open last time we spoke. But I have priorities now. We both do. We could never be friends.”
I try to calm him down. “I’m sure once we get back to my escape pod, when I call my superiors, I can make sure we have a truce for you.”
He scowls. “You talk like I’m ready to give up what I am. I’m going back to the covenant and explaining what happened with that honor-less asshole, and getting back to work.”
“No mention of me to them?” I motion him to respond. He sighs.
“What can I say? You ran off before I could catch you.” I smile.
“Good to know you don’t wanna kill me at least.” I motion towards where I wanna walk and Lar begrudgingly starts walking that way next to me. “Wanna talk about things?”
“No. I just wanna get back.” He pulls out his energy sword and uses it to cut through heavy leaves. I kneel down and grab a knife out of my boot, which Lar notices. He seems grumpy that they didn’t check my boot for weapons. I use the Combat knife to assist in chopping away foliage.
“I estimate the trek will at least take until nightfall until we reach those pods. I Suppose you’ll wanna remain in the shadows once we get there and wait until after I leave to call for your own support?”
He glances at me. “I suppose so.” He traipses through the leaves with sword in hand ahead of me. Elegantly striding along. I can’t help but watch him.
Doesn’t last too long until I trip on a tree root and fall on my face. I hear him stop and walk over as I get up. I look up at him and he looks down at me… With the helmet on, it’s impossible to tell what he’s thinking. I get to my feet as he maintains eye contact. “What, I tripped? Why are you still staring at me?”
“I know you were looking at my posterior.” I pause and blush slightly, looking away to hide it. “I…” I couldn’t even bother hiding it.
“Don’t make it a habit.” He scolded before resuming his path ahead. I follow carefully and watch where I’m doing. Maybe I am letting Lar distract me a bit too much. I should be lucky it’s him and not another Elite who’d be willing to kill me. But just because we happened to be stranded doesn’t mean I can let before fill my thoughts.
I take deep breaths and continue to move.
Hours go by I’m sure, as the ring rotates around itself, putting the nearest star out of sight making the already clear night sky more visible. We continued to walk through heavy weeds and trees. We made occasional stops to check our bearings and sure enough, we were still heading in the right direction.
And it wasn’t long before we reached a clearing carved out by the crash trail of two escape pods which clashed into each other. I didn’t arrive on those two, but I remember hearing on the comms them hitting, so I knew we were very close to where I crashed. We looked around the crash trail to determine the direction the pods were in.
“Looks nasty.” I sigh “It was, I only briefly got to see the wreckage. I think it’s this way.” He nodded and we followed the trail up to the two pods. One was ripped in half while the other sat a few meters next to it with a hole in the roof. Dead bodies were scattered as well as some leftover stuff.
I stocked up on some gear and weapons and we continued over towards my own pod which was down a nearby river from the two other pods.
Upon finding ourselves there, I peeked inside to find the radio. It was busted but it seemed to be an easy fix. I exit the pod to find Lar nearing the nearby woods. “The radio is busted so, I wont be calling for backup for a while. What are you gonna do?”
Lar took off his headdress and looked around. “I’m not sure.” I walk up to him. “You didn’t hear this from me but. You can always stay here as I set up camp until I get the radio working again.” Lar looks at me looking to see if I was joking. But no jokes to be found on my face.
“I don’t wanna encourage this when I made it clear we shouldn’t stick together.” I think a moment. “Well. I doubt we’ll see each other ever again after tonight so, I think you can manage one day of letting go of your guy’s weird desire to wipe out humanity.”
I offer a hand out to him and smile. He looks over at me before sighing and taking my hand. “Fine.” We walk over to the pod and get settled down inside. No use in making any fire though. Can’t risk covenant patrols finding me. We gather the gear inside of the pod and get the door shut leaving us huddled inside the pod.
I begin tampering with the Radio as Lar finally gets comfortable sitting without his armor. All he had on was his tech suit. It was weird. But refreshing to see an Elite without armor on. Helped calm the nerves.
“So, how long will that Radio take?” I look at the Radio a bit longer and poke it with my screwdriver. “Probably a while. We have time if that’s what your wondering.” I continue to poke around with the radio.
“So Lar… You’re an Ultra, eh? Impressive.” Lar nodded. “I’ve worked hard. I see you’re higher a Corporal now.”
I smile, “Yeah. A few promotions go far. Took how long of course. I’m a lot newer to the position then you’d think. At least I’m no longer with that bad team I was on.”
“The one’s that constantly put you in the line of fire because they didn’t care about your life?” I nodded. “Yep. THOSE guys. Surprised you still remember that kind of thing from last time.”
Lar quieted up and looked to the side. I catch his eye however and let out a laugh. “You couldn’t stop thinking about me either, could ya?” He looks at me angrily before letting it go. “I’m sure you were aware already after I poorly performed back on the carrier. You weaponized it.”
Right. I did weaponize it. “Yeah… Sorry about that.” Lar scoots from the chair onto the floor next to me. “No problem. I guess I’m glad we get to talk again. I suppose I’m sorry I was less then approachable when we first fell.”
“I understand, You said you didn’t really wanna get comfortable talking to me since your job doesn’t really allow it.” I smiles at him.
“I told my superiors I killed you last time we met.” I laughed. “Is that what you told your guys? I told mine that my team left me for dead and I hid out looking to get back. It got my team in trouble which was funny, but it never got easier.”
Lar looked down as he rested his head. “When I met you, you were wandering alone. I had also gotten separated from my group. I didn’t know If I wanted to fight. Wasn’t sure I had it in me. I thought you’d be a good target but.”
He paused. “When you pinned me down, you couldn’t bring yourself to do it. We eventually got to talking and realized we were both sort of forced into military service. And we really went from there.”
Lar continued “The first person I met to really understand me was a human. That was so strange because I was taught all humans were bad. Talking to you kind of opened my eyes a bit. I tried to ask about it once I got back after that week, But nobody had spoken to a human in great detail so. Nobody could really verify.”
I look at him and pat his shoulder. “From what I know, It has something to do with an ancient race called the Forerunners. Some kind of mistranslations? That’s what officials said anyway.”
Lar looks up at me. “It’s heretical to think about those types of things like that. It’s why I’m unsure of this right now.”
“Well. You’re not getting any judgment from me Lar.” I return. Lar lights up. And rests a bit. I poke around with the radio a bit more before it buzzes to life. “Got it working!” Lar looks at the radio then at me. I catch his eyes.
“You gonna go?” Lar shakes his head. “Not yet.” I nod and tune the Radio to a working channel before I call for help. After brief conversation, They get where I am down and they sent out a scout team to get me. I smile over at Lar before stopping and remembering this is where we’re gonna say goodbye.
Lar was already getting his gear in order to put on. “Yeah, you’re gonna wanna get ready to hide when they get here in a bit.” I help him get his gear on before opening the pod door. Once he’s ready. We stand outside together looking out towards the woods.
“You know…” Lar begins. He hands me some sort of Covenant device. I glance at it unsure of what it is. “That is a tracker. If for whatever reason you need me. Ping that. It’ll only alert me.” I look at it confused.
“Why the change of heart?” Lar sighs. “Don’t mention it. We never met again, you never saw me.” Lar steps away. But he stopped. He took his helmet off too so I could see his face.
“Lar?” I question. “Stay safe Tom.” He replies before nodded and putting on his helmet and moving off into the darkness of the trees. I pout slightly that he left so soon. Which calls my attention to the device he left. Maybe we’ll meet again? I quickly pocket the device and get everything together for pick up.
And sure enough, within the next 20 minutes, a Pelican flies by to pick me up. With one last glance towards the trees where I know Lar is no doubt still watching. I get into the pelican to take me to wherever I’m needed.
