Youth and Beauty
Children have their own wants and individual desires like anyone, but while growing they are naturally slaves to the physical needs of their young bodies. Modern society would wish for them to remain young and innocent until they surpass eighteen, or even twenty one. Yet while treating anyone younger as a child, society still expects them all to behave like adults. Children on the other hand like behaving like a child whenever possible, but want to be treated like an adult when it suits them and enjoy adult things. Truthfully, Leaf was neither. She was of that awkward pubescent stage where her body was developing faster than society approved of, instilling a sense of social modesty that infants lack, while also awakening physical desires that she couldn’t begin to satisfy on her own.
“Ah, there you are.” The boy exclaimed and rushed to the wall furthest from the window. “You won’t escape me this time.” He thrust out to grab at something on the wall, missed, and to her amazement she saw a shadowy shape dart away from him. It was odd, yet she was certain that the shadow looked exactly like him. Moreover, they seemed to be arguing. Nimbly he leaped again, jumping high into the air and for an instant appeared to hang there in defiance of gravity, reached out and caught something with both hands. “A little help?”
“Who me?” Leaf frowned, not confident that she could. Peter was on the floor, one foot pressed against the wall and looked as though he was trying to pull his shadow from it, as if such a thing was even possible. If he thought at all, although boys his age rarely ever thought, it was that he and his shadow, when brought near each other, would join like drops of water.
“Oh darn and blast it.” Peter exclaimed in falling to the ground. As difficult as it was to believe, he had held a firm grasp of the shadow for a second or two before it had slipped between his fingers and disappeared through a crack in the wall behind the bookcase. Peter began to sob.
“Why are you crying?” Leaf asked as she reached him. She was beginning to think that Peter could well be the boy from the stories her grandmother had told, but she wasn’t sure how that could be possible. They were the sort of stories that got passed down from generation to generation, and yet Peter held all the youthful looks of a boy not a day over twelve. She offered a hand and began to help him up.
“I wasn’t crying. I never cry.” He replied defiantly. “It’s just, well I’m not the same without my shadow. I do hope it doesn’t get crumpled. Where I come from, we have had a great many adventures together, me and my shadow.”
“I see.” Leaf smiled at him as she sat to rest on the end of her bed. “Where do you come from?”
“Neverland, of course.” Peter replied. “I live there with all the lost boys.”
“Who are they?" She asked with curiosity as she absently scrolled through Instagram on her phone, taking in images with the swift flick of her thumb. Leaf was entirely perplexed by Peter. Those familiar old stories were forming in her mind, of young boys playing with swords and dancing with native Indians, but it just wasn’t clear enough for her to quite recall.
“They are the children who fall out of their perambulators when the nurse maid is looking the other way, the orphans who don’t get new parents, the boys left on streets to fend for themselves. I'm their Captain and I take them all to live in Neverland with me."
“That is very caring of you.” Offered Leaf awkwardly, uncertain what more she could say. She knew deep inside what she thought to be her heart, that a child could do quite well without a mother, and that it was only mothers who really believed otherwise. She had not had much choice, for her own mother had caught Covid19 and passed away. “But why are they all boys, do you not allow girls?"
“Oh yes." Said Peter earnestly. "But you know, girls are much too clever to fall out of their prams.” Leaf had no idea what a perambulator was and she was fairly certain that nurse maids were a thing of the distant past, but she liked the compliment and decided not to spoil it by opening her mouth. She had long held the impression that most boys were stupid and idiotic until they became men, and even then, some of them remained that way. But she also knew that such sexist beliefs were inappropriate in the modern age of equality and could be most offensive to some. It was strange though, for a boy to openly own to it with such a self-effacing manner.
“Peter, sit here with me.” Leaf patted the bed next to her. “Tell me more about the Neverlands.” She scooted back on the bed, crossed her legs and set her phone aside in preparation. Geography was far from her strongest academic subject, but while she was certain she had heard of Neverland before, she felt like she might be confusing it with somewhere else. “Do you go to school there?”
“Oh no.” He replied as he jumped up onto the bed and copied her position. “I don’t ever want to go to school.” He frowned at her. “Off they skip like the most heartless things in the world, which is what school children are you know, but so attractive. They have an entirely selfish time and learn all those solemn things.” He said confidently. “Going to school means growing up and I don’t ever want to grow up. I will never grow up, not me.”
“What, not ever?” She asked, stunned by his passionate response. “Never is an awfully long time.”
“So it is.” Peter grinned. “But once you’re a grown up you can’t go back. You’re stuck being a grown up forever and ever, and that is an awfully long time too.” He folded his arms and grunted to emphasise his point. Leaf thought the boy a little eccentric, but he was sweet in a way and she liked his confidence. His arrival had frustratingly disturbed her nightly session of self-pleasure just as she was starting to enjoy the arousal, but she wasn’t going to hold that against him. To have a cute boy in her bedroom was not something she was accustomed to. Her father was really very strict when it came to boys and she was determined to make the most of Peter while she could.
“Peter.” She started thoughtfully, suddenly feeling rather coy and nervous. “Can I give you a kiss?”
“Yes, alright.” He replied, his grin turning into a smile. “I think I would like that of all things.” And with that he held out both hands, cupped together in anticipation. Leaf pouted at him.
“You’ve never kissed a girl, have you Peter.” She said with transparent disappointment.
“Of course I have.” He replied defensively, jumping back from the bed as though she had accused him of some heinous crime. “I’ve kissed girls lots of times.”
“Oh yeah? Alright name one.” Leaf was on her feet and had rounded the end of the bed in such quick strides that Peter backed towards the wall.
“I… erm…” Peter hesitated, retreating until his back was against the wall. “I don’t remember.” Leaf didn’t stop, she walked right up to where he stood, pinning him to the wall with a hand upon his chest. Delicately, and with more confidence than she had ever felt in her life, she leaned on her toes until her lips touched against his. It was bold and very forward of her, but she couldn’t help it. It wasn’t her first kiss. She’d been kissed by boys before, but that was different. He was there in her room and she wanted him. He felt warm, his heart beating rapidly against the palm of her hand and his lips were so soft and tender as she pressed closer to him. Peter hardly moved as she kissed him, not embracing her as she expected, but not resisting either.
She could blame it on his gender, but that seemed unfair somehow as self-consciousness started to play among her thoughts. Leaf wanted to rebel though, to defy her own anxiety and have some fun. She had already done the most difficult bit and taking his arm she pushed the boy’s hand to her chest, moulding his hand almost twice the size of her own around her breast. The other hand dropped, the one she had planted against his torso, and with an ounce of tenacity she grabbed for his crotch.
“You touched me.” Peter yelped. “That’s not fair.” Forcing her back until she lost balance and fell upon the bed. His face had turned a bright shade of crimson, but before she could reply or defend herself, he was gone. His feet barely seemed to touch the ground as he fled through the open window. Shocked, Leaf followed across the room as far as she could, but at the window she could only look out. Peter was gone, disappeared into the freezing cold night and in despair she felt tears welling. Yet something in his sudden departure did not quite add up. The view from the window reminded Leaf that her room was on the third floor of her London home, and yet Peter had not fallen nor left footprints on the frosty roof.
