If I messed something up in Jasper's story, please let me know and I'll fix it ASAP.
At my house, Jasper insisted on carrying me out to the gnarled oak. I relented, knowing arguing would get me nowhere.
“All right. What is it that you couldn’t tell me at lunch?” I asked when he set me down. He sighed and settled beside me.
“I want you to know that I really do love you, Whitaker. That’s why I had to talk to Carlisle about this. I wouldn’t tell you any of this if I didn’t care for you and want you to know everything about me.”
“What is it?”
“What you told me last night… You were right. My family and I… We’re not human.”
“What do you mean?”
“I almost slipped up and told you when you asked if they had heard us.”
“Then…what are you?”
“You know why we rarely wash sheets?”
I shook my head.
“Because vampires never sleep.”
“You’re a…” He nodded. “Then why aren’t your eyes red?”
“Our coven, our family, believes in the preservation of human life. We hunt animals, not people. Hence, our golden eyes. We’re not like most other vampires. They believe humans are our playthings.” He said the last bit with disgust. “And I used to think the same way until the Cullens changed my options.”
“So…are you like the vampires in all those books and stories?”
“No. Garlic doesn’t affect us, nor do religious artifacts or holy water. We have reflections, and can only be killed by being ripped apart and burned. Our skin is like stone and we’re cold, if you haven’t noticed.”
“I noticed, but it doesn’t bother me.” I sat in silence for a moment. “What about the sun?”
“We sparkle.” He smiled a self-deprecating smirk.
“Can you move fast?”
“Very.” He swallowed. “And we aren’t technically alive.”
“Huh?”
“Let me see your hand.” I gave it to him without hesitation. He placed it on his chest, over his heart, but there was no beat. “We have no heartbeat, and we don’t have to breathe.”
“So…I had sex for the first time with someone who, for all intents and purposes, is…dead.” He nodded. “Can someone say…Necrophiliac?” I joked; he didn’t laugh. “Sorry. That was a horrible joke.”
“There’s something I didn’t tell you about my power… I can also control emotions if I so wish, but I swear the only time I’ve done it to you was to help you sleep.”
“I believe you.” I sat with my knees tucked under my chin, my thinking pose. “Does Bella know?” I asked after a long pause.
“Yes. She figured it out, though.”
“So that’s what Edward meant…” I muttered. “The sex comment at lunch,” I clarified. “Now I understand all the control references…”
“Yes. Edward won’t pursue any…intimate relations with Bella because he’s afraid to lose control. He’s been a vegetarian longer than me, so he should be fine, but he refuses to listen to reason.”
“Vegetarian?”
“The vampires who don’t drink from humans.”
“So…you still drink blood.” I was trying to process it all.
“Yes.”
“How long have you been a vampire?”
“A long time.”
“How old were you when you…changed, I guess?”
“I was around nineteen or twenty. I don’t remember.”
“Good thing I’m eighteen, then.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before…before last night.”
“I understand. It involves everyone, and you had to make sure it was all right.” I continued to stare straight ahead. “How do you change?”
“Vampires have venom. It’s what triggers the change. When a vampire bites a human and doesn’t drain them, the venom spreads and changes the human into a vampire. I don’t know all of the details, but newborn vampires are the strongest because of their human blood…and the least in control.”
“How does Carlisle work in a hospital?” He chuckled.
“He’s been alive for centuries, so he’s had time to develop a meticulous control. Blood doesn’t draw him as it used to, though he still has to hunt.”
“Hmm.” I sat quietly as I tried to think of more questions. Memories of some of our other times together came forth instead of questions…
The first time we made out instead of just kissing was…different. Jasper was as hesitant as ever, thought that didn’t surprise me.
He had asked, just like he had when he first kissed me. I, of course, agreed; I was ready to try something other than just a kiss.
It was just a tentative brush of tongues, but still… I guess I was a little overeager, because Jasper had been chuckling with a strained voice when he pulled away.
Now I understand why it had strained him to be so close to me…
I was brought out of my musings by his voice. “The one who changed me was named Marie Hale, therefore my last name. She was creating newborns for the vampire war. I was a soldier way back when. She thought I would be a good underling to change and then control the newborns. When they were no longer useful…she had me ‘dispose’ of them.” His voice was full of disgust and hatred. I felt myself shudder. “I hated it, so I escaped and found Alice. She’s the one who took me to the Cullens and helped me adjust to their lifestyle.”
“That’s good.” My stomach was roiling; I could only imagine some of the things Jasper had been through.
“My scars are from my time back in Texas.”
“The war?” He nodded.
“Some were from my change. Marie bit me numerous times, thinking it would speed up the process.” Something struck me.
“Oh my… H-how did you deal back then?”
“What do you mean?”
“If you’re an empath, how did you put up with all those…vampires? Don’t they feel emotions, too?”
“Yes.”
“I can only guess, since they were in a war… I can only guess how much fear and rage they felt. How in the heck did you deal with that?” His arms wrapped around me and I was suddenly in his lap.
“How did you know?” His voice was painfully quiet.
“I know people and I know about wars.”
“Everyone pities me for what I went through, but you’re not…”
“I hate pity. I hate that you went through that, and I wish I could erase it, but I won’t pity. I’ll just be here.” He hugged me closer. I unwrapped my own arms from my knees and repositioned them around Jasper’s torso. “I still love you, horrid past or not.”
“I love you, too.” His forehead was pressed against my hair. “I am so sorry for not telling you. I’m just… I’m not good with words.” I wriggled from his grasp and stood. He didn’t look up. “I thought I could show you, love. I thought you knew when I started calling you that.” I lifted his face to meet mine. Guilt and worry were written across his features. I kissed away the worry line that creased his brow. His breathing was ragged from barely contained sobs. I kissed every inch of his face with care until he calmed. He looked up at me. “Thank you,” he whispered.
“Anytime.” I pushed his shoulders back against the supporting branch and straddled his lap. Slowly, I leaned forward and claimed his mouth with mine. I couldn’t stay mad at my love. Cliché as it sounds, that’s what he was to me.
I had one hand around his shoulders and I slid the other up into his hair, fisting it in his blonde locks. He moaned loudly. I pulled back, surprised.
“Sorry,” he mumbled. I smiled.
“I wasn’t expecting that.” I tugged gently and his eyes closed. “Do you like that?” He nodded. I leaned forward and kissed him again, tenderly pulling at his hair. I smiled as he moaned again. I could feel the effect I was having on him underneath me. I wiggled my hips over him. He thrust up against me. I stood and pulled him with me. “I’m going back to the house.” He grabbed me into his arms, and the next thing I knew, we were standing in front of the cabin. “You are fast…”
“I told you.”
I walked inside.
Jasper appeared beside me with my bags and Scruffball.
“What now?” I asked.
“Now…” He leaned over and pressed his lips to my forehead. “Now, I let you set the pace. I won’t do anything you don’t want.”
“I’m not sure if I’m ready for a repeat of last night.”
“Understandable, but I promise not to leave again.”
“I believe you.” I stood from the couch and hugged him. “I do understand, but it still hurts.”
“Did I hurt you physically?”
“No.” He sighed in relief.
“I’m glad.” My stomach rumbled.
“If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get something to eat. I’d offer you something, but I’m fresh out of live venison.” He snorted as I made my way to the kitchen. “Out of pork, too,” I joked. I grabbed a box of mac ‘n’ cheese from one of the cabinets and proceeded to boil the necessary water.
Jasper pressed himself against my back. He had his arms around my chest and I could feel his cold breath on my ear.
“You know, watching you move around the kitchen like that is kinda turning me on.” His excitement was evident against my rear. I turned and noted his dark eyes.
“You’re eyes are black again. You must be hungry.” I pointed to the door and he raised an eyebrow. “Go hunt while I eat. There are plenty of woods back there.” He smirked and nodded.
When I blinked, he was gone.
Well? What do you think? Please let me know.
Song of Time--Always gotta have chaos and confusion. It's what makes life interesting.
bluephoenix65069--Well, I could...but it might take a while. It'd probably be pretty much the same thing, just female POV
Gaps of Misery--Wow. Seriously? I actually didn't mean for it to be funny... Huh. That's better than expected. :) Hope the panic attack wasn't too confusing.
