I opened my eyes and turned towards my alarm clock. 6:30 a.m. I had about a half an hour to watch my beautiful wife sleep peacefully before our son was sure to wake up. I had to restrain myself from reaching a hand out to stroke Ana’s soft skin. She was so irresistible to me.
We had started trying for another baby a few weeks ago. Ana had taken a few pregnancy tests, but no luck yet. Her birth control shot had still been active until recently, so it would probably happen soon enough. I never could have predicted the day I came to my wife, asking her for another baby. After all, my all-consuming fear over her first pregnancy with Teddy had almost pulled us apart. Then again, I could never have predicted so many of the amazing firsts I’d now shared with Ana. She touched me and turned my world on its axis, and I was all the better for it. And one year ago, my son had done the same, making me a new man, a father. One year ago… Oh! Today was Teddy’s first birthday! I kissed Ana’s cheek, nuzzling my nose against her warm skin. She turned to me, opening her lovely blue eyes. “Good morning,” she whispered. “Good morning, love. One year ago today, you made me a daddy.” I kissed her soft lips. “Oh!” I big smile crossed Ana’s face as she realized what today was. “My baby is one! I can’t believe it!” “Shall we go get the birthday boy?” Ana nodded eagerly, and we strolled to the nursery, hand in hand. Teddy was just waking up, staring at us with big gray eyes from his crib. “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Teddy, happy birthday to you.” We sang quietly to our son before lifting him out of the crib. “My sweet one year old little boy.” Ana planted kisses all over Ted’s cheeks before laying him down on his changing table. “Okay, so we have his party this afternoon. What should we do ‘til then, Daddy?” Ana asked as she lifted the baby back into her arms. “Da!” Teddy squealed. “Oh my god!” Ana shrieked. “Christian, did you hear that?” I stood, shocked, staring at Teddy. Did his little voice just utter my name? “Christian? Let’s see if he’ll do it again. Teddy, say Daddy. You want to go see Daddy?” I held my arms out for my son. “Da-da!” Teddy reached his arms to me. “Oh my god! Ana! He’s saying it!” I grabbed the baby from her arms and spun him around. “He said his first word! On his first birthday!” She kissed Teddy some more. “Da-da-da-da.” Teddy was catching on to our excitement. “Yes, Daddy’s here. Daddy loves you.” I spun him around again. “I can’t wait to tell everyone!” “Looks like you lost out on our little bet, ma-ma,” I teased. “Well, technically we both lost to Gail when Ted took his first steps a week ago.” Hmm, this was true. “Let’s do something really fun with him today. How about the zoo?” “The zoo! Perfect!” Ana got Teddy dressed in his little birthday outfit, and we fed him, and ourselves, before heading out. “You have the stroller in the trunk, Christian?” “I’ll go transfer it,” I called back. I headed outside to move the stroller from Ana’s car to mine. Ana came out with Ted a few minutes later. “Da-da!” he called when he caught sight of me. Oh, I was not going to get sick of hearing that anytime soon. His tiny little voice warmed my heart completely. “Teddy bear! Let’s go to the zoo!” Ana strapped him in, and we headed out. After a long morning at the zoo and a stop for lunch, we headed back home to let the baby nap before his big party. Ana and I showered and changed while Teddy slept. Finally, we were all up and ready to go. We arrived at my parents’ house at 3 o’clock. They had gone all out, with big blue balloon bouquets, a face-painter, a kiddie magician, and more. We walked in and were bombarded with family members running up to the baby. “There’s the birthday boy!” “Happy Birthday, Theodore!” “Let me see my one-year-old grandson!” “Hi, Mom.” I kissed her cheek before handing off the baby. She made the rounds, showing him off to all of her friends and extended family. “Hi, Dad.” My dad came over and welcomed us in. Ana ran off when she saw Kate. I imagined they were exchanging updates on conception, or lack thereof. Girls were strange like that. I put on my best networking persona and made my way around the room, thanking everyone for coming to celebrate with us. I caught up with my mom, who handed me back the baby. “So, what did you guys do today to celebrate?” she asked. “Just had family time. Took him to the zoo.” “Oh, the zoo. That’s fun.” “He said dada this morning.” “He said his first word?! Amazing!” She beamed at Teddy, cooing, “Did you say da-da, you smart boy? Show Grandma how you say da-da.” Teddy wasn’t performing on demand this afternoon. “Maybe later.” I shrugged. Ana came over, putting a hand on Ted’s back. “Should we show Grandma how you walk, Teddy bear?” I put the baby down, and my mom kneeled and held out her arms for him a few feet away. Teddy began to toddle towards her as everyone watched. When he reached her waiting arms, she gave him a big hug and squeeze. “What a big boy walking so nicely!” I squatted, calling my son back. “Okay, Teddy, now walk to Daddy!” My mom put him back on his feet, and he scurried back towards me, almost tripping on the little shoelaces of his baby sneakers. “Da-da!” Teddy squealed as he reached me, and I lifted him high up in my arms. “Ah! He said it!” My mom gasped, a huge smile on her face. Ana beamed at us. We all sat down for dinner. My little sister Mia had Teddy in her arms, cooing at him as he babbled back to her. I always loved seeing them together. Both of them had such special places in my heart. Mia put Teddy in his high chair so that we could all sing to him. There was an extravagant three-tier birthday cake, blue with white frosting, with a helicopter on top that read “Charlie Tango.” Along the second tier it read, “Happy 1st Birthday, Theodore!” There was also a tiny little cake with one candle that was brought to Teddy’s high chair. Ana and I stood behind him, making sure he didn’t wave a hand into the lit candle as everybody sang to him. We helped him blow out the candle, and we both kissed either side of his cheeks. Mia snapped pictures of us like crazy, but today I didn’t mind. I removed the candle and watched as Teddy stuck his pudgy hand in his little cake, bringing it back up to his mouth. He gave a huge smile as the sweet frosting hit his lips, in addition to hitting his nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin! Ana ran to the diaper bag to throw a bib on him, even though it was probably too late. We all laughed watching him enjoy his first dessert. When everyone had finished eating, I wiped up Teddy and put him in my arms. He gave a yawn and snuggled into my neck, wiped out from his big day. “That’s our cue, I think.” I nodded to my wife, and we said our goodbyes. “Thank you, Mom and Dad. It was a wonderful party.” “It really was. You better call us when he says his second word!” “We will, promise,” Ana replied. “And it’s gonna be mama.” I smiled at my wife, shaking my head. We got Ted in his car seat and drove off. When we got home, we got him changed out of his cake-stained birthday outfit and into pajamas, kissed our little boy goodnight, and laid him in his crib. I put my arms around Ana’s waist from behind and held her as we both watched our son sleep. “I can’t believe he’s a year old,” Ana whispered. “I became a mom a year ago today.” I couldn’t believe it either. “You gave me the best gift in this world one year ago today, Mrs. Grey.” I rocked her gently as I spoke. “Where did the time go? I feel like I’m going to blink my eyes, and he’ll be out of diapers, out of his crib, even off to kindergarten! He’s already walking and talking!” “Well, if by talking you mean one word.” We both laughed quietly. “Soon enough there’ll be a new baby in this crib.” I kissed Ana’s cheek and splayed my hands across her stomach. “Mmm, that will be amazing.” Ana leaned her head back on my shoulder and put her hands on mine, rocking with me. “Alright, let’s get out of here before we wake little boy.” I took her hand, and we headed to our own room, quickly undressing, snuggling under the covers, reminiscing about the day our worlds changed one year ago, and finally molding ourselves to each other in the hopes of changing our world once more nine months from now.Hope you like it!!
