Chapter 20: The Dangers of Icewind Dale
Catti-brie looked up at the drow, noticing with surprise the frightened look in his eyes. Had her plan failed? Did he still see the mermaids before him in her stead, or was it something else that had happened?
“I’m.. I’m sorry..,” the elf said in a hoarse voice, and, before the woman could protest, pulled his clothes on again and left the room, leaving Catti-brie behind.
She looked at the door, her brain desperately trying to figure out what he meant. He was sorry, he said. But for what?
Lost in thought, she rubbed her shoulder to loosen the dull ache in it, when realization suddenly dawned on her. Glancing down herself, she saw the bruises on her hips - no more than what one would get from falling – where he had grabbed her during their rough coupling.
“Catti, ye fool!” she scolded herself, slamming a fist into the mattress. She should have figured that it would only increase the elf’s angst if he harmed her in any way, whether it was his intention or not.
Now, she could only pray that she could get him passed this…

Drizzt quickly made his way through the tunnels of the dwarven mines, his mind a jumble of emotions, thoughts and frustration. The only thing that stood clear, was that one of his worst fears had come true in that bedroom, and he wondered if Catti-brie ever could forgive him. If he ever could forgive himself… At the moment, though, he needed to get out into fresh air, to find somewhere solitary to get a hold of his feelings.
The dwarves at the entrance seemed slightly surprised upon seeing him, as if they had not at all considered it a possibility he would show up at this time, though they let him pass without a word. He nodded in greeting to both as he left, and then strode over the vast plains that formed Icewind Dale, leaving the mines far behind.

Catti-brie sat forlorn at the edge of the bed, robe back around her, as she pondered what to tell Drizzt. He would probably not be the least happy being told she had put aphrodisiacs into his wine, yet, if she did not tell him, he would continue to believe the light bruises she had sustained had been his fault.
Deciding that she would rather face his wrath than having him even more afraid to touch her, she quickly pulled a tunic over her head and jumped into a pair of breeches, determined to go and find him. But, upon leaving the room, she noticed something hanging over the back of the chair. She gasped, and began running down the hallways, knowing all too well the many dangers that lurked within Icewind Dale. Dangers, that could take down even spectacular fighters, if they did not wear armour..

He did not notice that he was walking into an ambush, until he felt a tiny dagger dig into his back – an action that also reminded him of the painful fact that he had forgotten to don his armour, yet another testimony to his emotional distress. Immediately, forcing his brain to ignore the pain and bury it under a rush of adrenalin, he whirled around, scimitars already in his hands, and managed to get the blades up just in time to block a hit that otherwise would have cleaved his skull.
The human thug snarled at him, then broke the contact of their blades, only to comehim him with the double-thrust low, an attack Drizzt knew only too well. His hands worked without his mind, easily bringing the blades out wide, and then his foot snapped up, connecting solidly with the ruffian’s jaw, knocking the opponent two feet back. Determined to use the thug’s surprise to his advantage, the drow dropped both blades and instead leaped, twisting in the air, and slammed his other foot home at the bandit’s temple, knocking his foe out cold. His feet had barely touched the ground again before the familiar hilts of his weapons were back in his hands, but the thug did not move from where he had fallen.
Suddenly, yet another explosion of pain slammed into Drizzt’s right shoulder as another dagger struck home, and, not wasting time, the black elf spun around, eyes scanning for the attacker, but found the area around him to be empty.
Out of nowhere, a tiny dagger suddenly appeared, flying towards him and, before he could intercept it with his blades, buried itself into his thigh. Muttering a curse, he quickly pulled out the missile and then went into a crouch, eyes scanning the area for any sign of his invisible adversary.
A fourth dagger whizzed past his ear, barely missing him, and the drow’s eyes immediately darted to where the dagger had come from. He detected a faint movement in the grass, a movement not caused by the ever-blowing wind that characterized Icewind Dale, and he immediately leapt, scimitars leading the way. He could feel his blades slide into flesh (their edges disappeared where they slid under skin and clothes), though he could also feel yet another knife – this one larger than those that had been thrown at him, dig into his lower back.
But the blood that flowed from the wounds he had caused was not invisible, and his own blood on his opponent’s dagger made it possible for him to deflect many of the blows, and land some of his own as well. Yet, knives still dug into his skin, wielded by other, unseen foes, and more than once did his blades cut another creature than the one he had attacked initially, until, at end, he realized he was surrounded by foes, where only their cuts and bloodied weapons gave away their location.
The drow could feel he already had lost much blood, though he had only managed to bring down a single of the invisible beings, and with every drop of blood he could feel his strength leave him. And, as the rush of adrenalin that had kept him going so far diminished, he realized that the daggers thrown at him – some of them still embedded in his flesh - had been poisoned.
Gritting his teeth against the suddenly overwhelming pain and exhaustion that flooded over him, he parried a few more blows before his legs gave up carrying his weight and he dropped to a knee. Immediately, his opponents took up their attacks with renewed fury, sensing that victory was close at hand. It was more luck and instinct now that made the drow able to swat away most of the attacks, yet he, too, could sense that he was loosing the fight.
A knife dug into his left wrist, making him drop Icingdeath and rendering the hand useless. Black dots danced before his eyes as he fought to maintain consciousness, but he was too weak.
As he crumpled to the ground, any second expecting to feel the killing blow, his thoughts went out to Catti-brie – a final plea for her to forgive him. With his final shred of consciousness, he heard the faint crack of something heavy slamming into a body, and heard screams of both pain and shock from the things surrounding him, and then everything was swallowed in blissful darkness...
