Chapter 21
The queen watched patiently as the two of them walked into the room. Michele and Alice were side by side and supporting each other in their steps. The queen of spades smiled suggestively as they came in.
“Back for more. I like that.” She said lustfully.
Alice’s hopes had been answered, their things had just been abandoned and left in the throne room, even their weapons. With the chaos of the battle outside it was impossible to send a soldier to do any cleanup. If they could just get to their weapons then they could stand a chance.
Michelle and Alice only gave each other a slight glance and seemed to exchange a whole plan to each other about what they were going to do. It wasn’t much of a plan anyway, they would rush for their weapons and rush at the queen before she did anything.
They jumped, Michelle for the short sword and Alice for her dagger. The queen knew where they were going and didn’t seem to care. All she cared about was the fact she had some people to watch her again. Her hands reached up and her fingers pinched her already hard nipples. Alice and Michelle cried out loudly and collapsed to the floor, almost a foot short of their weapons. Alice rolled on the floor but it was away from her dagger. Her arm caught onto something made of a rough material. As the queens hands left her breasts and moved down to her clit Alice took the half a second to realised that she had rolled across the room and right next to her bag. Her trusty bag that she had brought with her all this way. She pulled it open but the queen hands reached their target and she spread her bare pussy lips, rubbing her fingers up and down the delicate pinks flesh. Alice arched her back, feel sweat breaking out across her body and her pussy awaken. The organ hurt so much, it was sore from so many orgasms abut still it awoke willingly to experience one more climax. Her body was exhausted but willing was ready to go through orgasm again.
She squealed loudly, her voice echoing off the wall as she felt the climax rip through her and her legs and arms thrashed around wildly. Her hand vanished into her bag but she couldn’t find the will to grab anything. She didn’t even know what in her bag of tricks could help her.
The queen stuck a finger up into her twat, feeling herself filled was a rush for her. She loved doing this in front of these people and she loved the effect they were having on her just by being in the room. She could feel the pleasure rising and she bit her lip; she was feeling so good and so alive the like of which she had never felt before.
Alice felt a blot of pain tear through her lips and she caught the taste of blood in her mouth. It excited her further and she felt another orgasm rising quickly. It was good, too good she wouldn’t be able to stand it. She felt as if she was going to explode. She couldn’t take it anymore. One fist pounded the floor while the other groped around inside her bag trying to find something to hold and squeeze. Her fingers found something small and round and she held it tightly. It felt like glass and she through for sure she would crush the thing in her hand. Her heart pounded in her head and she could feel the blood racing around in her veins as the pressure inside her grew toward the explosive climax that would finish her mind and body.
Then suddenly and almost welcomingly they started to fade. As if the many hands groping her erogenous zones and sending lightning through her nerves had decided to leave her. The fire began to fade and her thoughts were becoming her own again. What was happening? Alice sat up and looked around, thinking that perhaps the queen had stopped touching herself. Michelle was still writhing around on the floor, moaning deeply and arching her back as climax’s started to take her. The queen was still on her throne with her fingers in her cunt. Her eyes were closed and she didn’t notice that Alice was no longer affected by whatever spell she cast. Alice took some deep breaths, trying to recover her strength and she was endlessly confused by the fact she was now free of the queen’s influence. She looked down and pulled her arm out of her bag. In her thrashing she had groped out at everything and had grabbed anything and everything in reach. In her palm was a small blue ball that pulsated with a strange purple light. It felt like glass but was warm to the touch. A bead of logic and it’s power was helping her now. Already she could feel the logical thoughts beginning to run through her head out of nowhere. She and the queen were two separate people with individual thoughts and feelings. The queen was over there touching herself and because she and Alice was separate there was no way that anything the queen did to herself could affect Alice and her body. Alice felt strength returning to her and, gripping the ball tightly she made her way to her knees. As silently as she could she stood up and slid carefully across the floor toward her dagger. She gripped it tightly in her free hand and padded as quietly across the floor as she could manage. Not that it mattered both Michelle and the queen were moaning out so loudly that she could have stomped her way around and neither one would have noticed.
Alice’s hands were shaking as she stood nothing more than a couple of feet away from the queen, if she opened her eyes now she would see her and then it would be down to who had the quicker reactions. Would Alice get her dagger to the queens throat or would the queen knock the dagger out of her hand. Alice wanted to throw up, butterflies were going crazy in her stomach. She couldn’t take it anymore she ad to act. She raised her dagger and pressed the cold metal against the soft flesh of the woman. She opened her eyes and her body froze. She gasped loudly and stared in fear at Alice.
“Take your hands away from your body.” Alice demanded sternly. Slowly but surely the queen responded and slowly moved her hands away and placed them onto the arms of the throne.
Michelle lay on the floor trying to catch her breath and she looked over to Alice with a smile on her face. She managed a laugh through the gasps and Alice found herself smiling too. “Take off the crown.” Despite her rising mood her tone was a harsh one. Michelle rolled off of her back and onto her belly and used some hidden strength to rise herself to her knees. The queen looked at her harshly, but she did comply with the command.
“A crown does not make you a queen. You will never rule wonderland.”
Alice snatched the crown and nodded her head. “I won’t but the true queen of wonderland can.” She stepped back and stood in front of Michelle, the exhausted woman hadn’t managed to get off her knees but it didn’t matter. It seemed fitting that she be down on her knees for this; her coronation.
******************
The world itself seemed to celebrating, the sky was a clear blue and the sun shone down. The sky seemed full of birdsong and even the air itself seemed to smell a little sweeter. All of wonderland was rejoicing for the true king and queen were back on the throne. Almost. They had wanted to do things properly and so they were holding a grand coronation, or should that be re-coronation ceremony.
The grand throne room of the palace, which was almost the size of a football field was packed tight with people. Only a small clear path, large enough for two people to walk down side by side, was left. This path led from the great doors to the grand thrones. The crowd were all familiar, mostly woman and children whom had once lived up in the mountains in the makeshift village that had been constructed by the Army of hearts and their families. The front line of the crowd was made up of soldiers, dressed in full dress uniforms. Shining mail coats of solid silver and white tunics of silk with hand embroidered scarlet hearts of excellent velvet. White pantaloons of silk with fine black boots made of fine leather that came up to the knees, they were handmade and had hand engraved patterns running down the sides and decorated with silver filigree. In each of their hands was a long sword or spear but these, like their grand uniforms, were not intended for battle. The spears were made with the finest wood of ancient oak, hand carved with gold wire inlaid and the metal tops were made of shining gold with more patterns of hearts and spirals engraved into the metal. The swords were made of solid silver and the hilt was covered with black leather and small but rare jewels of every colour in existence. The blades of the weapons were engraved with fine patterns of spirals and hearts that had been hand engraved with great loving care. Many of the solders sported some kind of injury, bruises and recovering cuts, many of them were wrapped in bandages underneath their fine uniforms but still they managed to look tall and impressive.
There were others in the crowd behind them. It took more than the occupants of the village to fill the great hall. These other people were from the serving staff of the palace. There were no noble families here, no lords of ladies or dukes or duchesses. Michelle and Jacob had wanted the salt of the earth to be here to witness them; two people who had been no better than they a few days ago now rising up to be King and Queen. Simple folk make good.
Between the two thrones, dressed in a fine dress of the finest silk, decorated with fine and rare jewels of many colours was Alice. The dress looked like it was white until it was looked at from just the right angel, then it shimmered and shone with all the colours of the rainbow. On both thrones were two crowns, one for the king and the other for the queen. Alice had been more than honoured to perform the coronation. She wore upon her forehead a crow of her own that Michelle had insisted be made and worn just for the occasion. It was a fine V of gold that started at her forehead and went trough her hair and to the back of her head the sides were decorated with fine silver chains that were so small and delicate it was impossible to know how large human fingers could have made them. These chains started just before he ears and came up and down in a wavy pattern until they met each other at the back of the crown. A single white jewel rested in the gold in the middle of Alice’s forehead. Alice took a glance down at the crowd and saw a familiar sight of two large ears atop of a mop of pink hair. Chester Kat now had half of one of those ears missing but he wore the mark proudly. He was dressed in the same full dress uniform as the rest of the soldiers. The only difference being that his had a small gold star in the middle of the velvet heart, the symbol of a Capitan.
The grand doors of the throne room opened and everyone watched expectantly as two people stepped inside slowly. Jacob and Michelle, dressed in fine silks of red and black, walked slowly toward the thrones.
“Present.” Called Chester. He raised up the sword he held and every solider followed suit raising their swords or spears to create a tunnel of shining weapons under which Michelle and Jacob walked. Everyone was silent in reverence of the occasion. The two royals came down and knelt in front of Alice with their heads bowed in wait for the ceremony. Alice turned and took the kings crown first. The queen was the true ruler of wonderland, her ceremony was the longest, so it was done last. Alice laid the crown slowly down on Jacobs head.
“By the power vested in me.” She spoke as loudly as she could. Her voice echoed off the walls and seemed to give power to her words. “By the four corners of wonderland and it’s people. I crown thee King; leader of the royal armies and defender of the people. May you be bound by honour and speak only truth. May your might never fail and your blade defend the helpless.” Alice let go of the crown and took a step back. Jacob rose slowly to his feet and placed his hand upon his heart.
“I shall do my duty as long as there if life in me.” He bowed slightly and Alice bowed also. She continued the ceremony and took the queens crown in her hands. Michelle still hadn’t moved from her kneeling place or even given Jacob a glance as he’d been crowned, as the ceremony dictated she should do.
Alice raised the crown above he own head and looked down upon Michelle. “The Gods of wonderland speak and call the rightful queen here. Her strength will be wonderlands strength. Her days will be many and they will be blessed. Her reach will be known across the land, from the black mountains of the north to the great silver ocean of the southern continents. Her word shall be law, her rule shall be just and her heart shall be the guide. By the power vested in me by the four corners o wonderland and it’s people.” She gently lowered the crown downward, good job too because her arms were getting tired. When the crown touched the top of Michelle’s head Alice continued the last of her speech. “I crown thee Queen; Ruler of the lands and servant of it’s people. May honour and wisdom lead you through peaceful years.” Alice let go of the crown and took a step back. Michelle slowly rose to her feet and bowed her head slightly and Alice bowed low. Michelle placed her hand on her heart.
“I Shall do my duty as long as there if life within me.” She said, her voice had changed, it seemed more confident and commanding than before. She was feeling the power of her old life returning to her. She could see now how she had turned into such a tyrant; power had corrupted her. Absolute power had made her spoiled and selfish. But now her memories of her meek existence in a cabin in the woods would make sure she didn’t repeat the same mistakes; she had been grounded by the common touch.
Michelle and Jacob side by side stepped up stood in front of their thrones. As they sat the whole room burst out into applause and cheers. Michelle felt as though she wanted to cry. She felt such love that it was overwhelming. She rose up from her seat and raised a hand; slowly the noise of the crowd began to die until there was a silence and everyone waiting on baited breath for her to speak her first words as queen.
“This day does not belong to myself, nor my husband. It belongs to all. It belongs to the valiant soldiers who fought and those who died fighting for what they knew to be right. It is only through the sacrifice of those people that we stand here today. I shall ensure that they will never be forgotten.” Every head in the room looked downward in respect for what was being said. “But most of all.” Michelle continued, grabbing everyone’s attention again. “Nothing would have occurred at all if it had not been for the bravery of one person. She alone found me, lost in dark place. She brought me to the light and took me to my people. She was a guide and constant inspiration; dragging me on no matter how difficult the situation. Today, in regaining my crown I now have the power to honour her and repay the debt that I owe.” She glanced over her shoulder and looked to Alice, who was still standing behind her between the two thrones. “Alice, please come and kneel before me.”
Alice, feeling nervous and confused, did as she was asked and knelt in front of Michelle. Michelle looked down her and smiled. She picked up from the throne her royal sceptre of hearts and rested on the top of Alice’s head. “Alice you have earned more than my gratitude with your great deeds. You have earned my love. I consider you a daughter and I want the world to consider you the same.” She turned her attention to the rest of the room. “Let it known that on this day and in this place you have witnessed inauguration of the Princess of Hearts.”
There was a lot of muttering in the room, confusion was spreading through the crowd. But the most confusion was coming from Alice. Michelle raised her hand and people fell to silence. “She is to be considered a member of the royal family and have all the rights and powers the title commands. This is my word and it is law. Now rise. My daughter.”
Alice rose and had to wipe tears from her eyes. “Thank you…my mother.” She said with sincerity. “But…” She fell silent but Michelle had caught the word and knew she wanted to say more. She ignored the rest of the crowd was gone as far as she was concerned.
“What is it? Please say what is wrong. I do not want you to be unhappy.”
Alice nodded and took a deep breath, it had to be said sooner or later. “I am honoured, more than honoured, that you would give me this title. And I would gratefully accept but I do not wish to tie myself here. This whole world is beautiful and I wish to see more of it. My heart lies out there on the road and in those mysterious and unseen places. I cannot become the princess if it means I must remain here in the palace. I am sorry.” She dropped to her knees and bowed low once more. The whole room fell silent and Michelle sat down on her throne deep and dark thoughts were in her head. The happy mood of the celebration was quickly fading from her.
“I want nothing more than your happiness. After everything you have done for me, it is the least I can do to repay my debt. If you wish to travel this great land then you shall. You are my daughter and the princess of wonderland and you shall travel for as long and as far as you wish. But know that the gates of this palace will always be open to you when you wish to return. We shall give you everything you need.”
Alice could have cried.
****************
Alice was eager to get underway as soon as possible. Barely four hours later she was on horseback with the palace behind her slowly disappearing beyond the horizon. They had given her everything she could need. Alice was dressed in a bright scarlet outfit, a tight bodice, trousers and black riding boots. A burgundy cloak was around her shoulders and black gloves were on her hands. The horse was carrying two large satchels, one of which was her trusty bag that she’d had since the start of her quest. It held her trusty dagger which was sharpened and looked able to slice stone. Two bottles of juice from the mushrooms of size, unused and just waiting for the opportunity. The bead of logic still sat there but it now powerless and was more of a jewel than a tool. The rest of the beg and the second one carried by the horse was full of water bottles and preserved food. Alice had taken a small selection of weapons; a sword, the short sword that Michelle had used to raid the palace. She also had taken a bow and arrows; it was a fine bow, made of strong wood reserved only for members of the royal family when they went hunting. The wood was as white as ivory, strong as iron yet light as a feather. She also had a quiver full of fifty arrows made of the same wood, fine steel and dove feathers. They had gone to a lot of trouble to kit her out and she had taken it all with pride.
The palace disappeared and ahead the road lead into a forest. Alice was heading west. First she would find the home of her sphinx friend Mina and, eventually, move further onward to the Golden Plains and find the Crudican tribe and find her lover Kappu. She had parted with the two of them in such poor terms she had to know how they were getting on. She might stay with them for a few days or perhaps weeks, if they would allow her the hospitality. Then she would travel across wonderland and see it’s many mysterious places for a few months, perhaps a year or so. She guessed that eventually she might tire of adventuring but she wasn’t sure if she would return to the palace or not. She knew one day she would return to her true home in the normal world and when she left she would make sure to concentrate on a time as well as a place so she would reappear at home moments after she’d left instead of years. She would not allow that horrific future she’d seen to come true.
Chester was going to be alright. They had shared a private moment together before she left the palace. He considered his debt repaid and she had considered herself in his debt for all he had done since they had come together.
*******************
“You are going to stay?” She asked. He nodded his head. He had nodded and given her one of his fang filled smiles. But it was a fake, there was no happiness behind the grin and they both could see it. Alice’s eyes were drawn to the missing section of his ear and felt a stab of guilt.
“The King and Queen have offered me a position as Capitan of the guard. Many were lost in the battle and Wonderland needs some rebuilding. Both in its towns and villages and in its peoples faith. They need good soldiers and strong leaders.”
“So why are you staying?” Alex teased. They both shared a giggle and Chester wrapped his arms around her tightly. Alice held onto him, pressing her head into his shoulder and fighting back the tears.
“If you ask me.” He said slowly. Alice pulled herself back to look at him. “I will come with you. Be by your side to face whatever the world holds on your path.”
In that moment she was tempted to say ’yes’. It would be good to have a friend by her side during the unknown. But her heart held her mouth closed until she was ready to say what had to be said.
“Chester. You are free of your vow, you are your own person. If you come with me, it has to be by your own choice. You have to decide what you want.”
Chester nodded his head and had helped strap the bags to the horse for her. Alice already knew what he was going to say. “Then I am sorry Alice.” It felt weird to both of them for him to use her name rather than saying ‘Mistress’. “I feel that I have to stay here, where I am needed.”
Alice smiled and had kissed him on the cheek. “Chester Kat.” She said with pride. “A brave and noble being. No longer the beast that Wonderland once knew.” She climbed up onto the horse and he’d led her out of the stables. “But more of a man than he gives himself credit for.” She said to him before she rode away.
*******************
Under the shadow of the trees Alice felt calm and peaceful. One adventure was behind her and perhaps some new ones were waiting ahead of her. The horse moved at a slow walk, it was a long walk and she didn’t want to tire the poor animal out too early.
She could see someone ahead. He was standing in the shadows but she could tell it was a HE. Alice reached a hand behind her back to the sword. She was taking no chances. As she drew closer he came no clearer. That spot under the trees seemed grow darker just for him.
“Going somewhere are we?” He asked. His voice seemed familiar and Alice tightened her grip on her sword.
“I’m going on a little expedition, you could say.” She responded, keeping it simple and herself ready in case trouble started.
“Such fine clothing for a simple traveller.” He said, sounding almost happy. “You must have come from somewhere quite grand. Why would you leave luxury for the road.”
“There is a whole world out there.” Alice said. “And it can be better than any soft bed or warm room.”
“You’ve been through so much darkness and yet you find the light. That’s is a rare gift.” He stepped into the light finally and gave Alice a good look at him.
“Story Keeper?” Alice said in surprise. She let go of the sword and worked quickly to dismount the horse. The Story Keeper held the reins for her and kept the animal still. “What are you doing here?”
“To greet you. Alice you have done well. You have restored the balance to wonderland and brought peace to the world. Now I come to you with another task; your true reason for being here. Walk with me.” He said, looking through the trees. Alice glanced to where he was staring but could see nothing.
“What about the horse?” Alice asked looking at the animal.
“It will still be here when we return. We will only be a moment.”
Alice agreed and followed the Story Keeper through the trees. At first there was nothing in sight but, after about a quarter of a mile he pushed a low branch aside and Alice found herself looking at a large house. It was practically a mansion, built in red brick and looked quite old. “This is the home where you brought be after I arrived at wonderland.” Alice said amazed. “But I thought it was in the western woods?”
“That is where we are.” The Story Keeper said, pulling a small golden key from his pocket. “The house does not move, but I can. You yourself managed to travel many miles across wonderland in an instant. As the Story Keeper I have the ability to do it without returning to our world first.” As he put the key into the lock Alice grabbed his arm and made him look at her.
“If you could have taken me across wonderland instantly why did you make me walk all the way?” She demanded. “Everything I’ve been through. All these scars. Are you telling me they could have been avoided?”
“Avoided perhaps.” He said sternly. “But should they have been? No.” He turned back and opened the door. He continued to talk as he stepped inside. Alice followed close behind. “There are rules to this role. I bent them to rescue you and bring you here. I bent them when I sent you on the quest and even gave you those items to help you. Helping you travel the distance would have bent those rules to breaking point. But it still would have just been a bending as long as the tasks involved; recruiting the Maid of Hearts and taking back the throne, were done by you and you alone. But recall how you were when you first came to Wonderland; slightly naïve, under confident, most certainly not the strong warrior you are now. Had I placed right on the door step of the battle the day would have been lost in moments. Only after everything you had been through, fought against and survived, could you have gained the strength and experience needed to prepare you the great task of the final battle.”
Alice fell silent. Perhaps he was right. She did feel that she ha changed a lot during her journey. That still didn’t mean that she was happy at what he’d done. She and so many other people had suffered so much because of that one decision.
“You said something about ‘my true reason’.” She said. “What do you mean?”
The Story Keeper said nothing until he’d guided her into the grand library of the building. A couple of large soft leather chairs were in front of a fireplace sat facing each other. Between the chairs was a small table with a tea service set out, complete with scones and a proper teapot. Alice was moved slightly by the effort he’d gone to for her she took her seat quietly as the Story Keeper poured her a cup and handed it to her. “Thank you.” She said out of politeness. Not all of her manners had suffered during her adventure. Alice took a sip was shocked, it was delicious, so strong and fresh, as if it had been picked just a moment ago.
“Lovely.” She said, resting the cup onto the table. “But please, you said there was another reason for my being here. What is it?”
The Story Keeper took a sip of his own tea and nodded his head. “I just wanted there to be a comfortable place for to brake the news. You see Alice the second I saw you I knew the truth. I felt an awakening in my body. I recognised you for what you really were. You see, one of the abilities that a Story Keeper has is to know when their successor has entered Wonderland.” He fell silent for a few seconds so Alice could grasp at what he was getting at. Alice figured it out instantly but it needed a little more time to sink in. she laughed in disbelief. The Story Keeper continued. “Alice, I knew it from the moment you came to Wonderland and the second I saw you at that tea party; you are to be the new Story Keeper of Wonderland.”
Alice shook her head violently. It was impossible. “You must be wrong.”
“I’m afraid not Alice. I am sure of this as the last Story Keeper was as sure of me. This is the destiny that brought you here. I merely delayed its coming long enough for you to restore the throne.”
Alice sat back in her chair, it felt like her head was going to burst. It couldn’t be true and yet apparently it was. “But I had so many plans. I wanted to see my friends. I wanted to Journey Wonderland…I wanted to go home.”
“Once your successor arrives you can return to your home only moments after you left, regardless of how long you stay here. And you can still Journey Wonderland, you can now see it’s many wonders from the Silver ocean to the south from the Singing Sand Dunes in the north-western desert. I highly recommend the beach of rainbow sands. You can even see the people you’ve met on your journey…but there is a downside.”
That got Alice’s true attention. If she could see Mina and Kappu that would be great. “What downside?” She asked cautiously. The Story Keeper looked at her right in the eyes.
“Depending where you go in wonderland depends on who I am. I am one of three different people. These different guises are attached onto great legends that are part of the culture of wonderland. Stories that will be told long after I have returned home. I can be Jacque; the man in the blue suit, Marcus; a hermit of the western woods or Lucian the magician. No one in Wonderland save you knew my title and no one ever knew my true name. If you visit your friends they will see you only in one three guises that where created by the legends you made and spread during your journey.”
“What legends?” Alice jumped in. “I never started any legends.”
The Story Keeper looked at her and folded his arms. “Didn’t you? I hear strange tales everywhere I go. Tales of Kata; a travelling warrior maiden without a home who has never been defeated and constantly seeks a foe worthy of her skill. They say she is so fearsome that Death itself is afraid to collect her. And that she destroyed the mighty Krull with her bare hands. There are other stories spreading of Morgana the witch who can travel many miles in the blink of an eye and she can actually travel to other worlds where strange beings beyond our imagination live. The final legend is that of Alexia; The lost Princess. It started the moment you rode away from the palace. The Lost princess travels the world to see its many wonders and walk it’s many lands. She will only ever be seen from a distance and if you get close she will vanish like a mirage. She will never return home, they say, until she’s seen everything there is to see in the infinite Wonderland.”
“Where do all these legend come from?” Alice interrupted. “How can people know of deeds that I have only witnessed?”
“Wonderland contains more mysteries than I can ever figure out.” The Story Keeper said gently. “Who can say how stories get out. Even in our world a secret you wish to keep always becomes common knowledge and yet no one can explain that.”
“I suppose that is true.” Alice admitted. Then she turned back to the subject that had been at hand, certainly the subject that more important in her mind. “So are you saying I can’t visit my old friends as me?”
“I’m afraid not.” The Story Keeper said. “They will see you as only one of those three identities. They will not recognise you for who you really are.”
Alice sighed sadly. It was tough to know she wouldn’t be able to be seen by her old friends again. It was hard, but she knew she had no choice. This was the reason that she had found her way back to wonderland in the first place. And the Story Keeper had held the title for so many years, he was no doubt missing his family. Also she had wanted to stay in wonderland for a while and have some new adventures. Now it would be possible and she could see so many amazing things and meet so many people and in doing so she would feed stories and legends that would live on long after she had gone home to her family. It was exciting to know you would be securing a legacy.
“Well I do have no choice.” She said quietly. “If this is my destiny then I must accept.”
The Story Keeper smiled and bowed his head. “Thank you Alice. You will not regret this decision.” He took his hands up to the turban around his head and pulled away a small silver broach that was shaped like a star. “This is the symbol of the Story Keeper. It is how the power is transferred from one to the next.”
“That broach gives me the power?” Alice said doubtfully.
“The broach is a symbol; a metaphor. By taking this broach you agree to take on the responsibility of the Story Keeper; the guardian of wonderlands secrets, the custodian of its knowledge, the warden of it’s history.” He held out his hand with the broach resting on his palm and Alice looked down at it. She was going to take it, it was her duty and also her destiny.
“What will happen to you?” She asked curiously, her hand slowly began to rise toward his.
“I will return home. I have been away from my life and child for far too long. To see my home again after so long and to be able to pick up riht where I left off is the greatest reward for my years of service to this great world.”
Alice took the piece of jewellery from him. At once she felt a strange energy coming over her. As she pinned the broach to her dress she felt her mind changing. She could feel her knowledge growing and yet somehow remaining exactly the same. She knew everything that was going on in Wonderland at that exact second and yet it was like a daydream that her mind could pick up then ignore at any moment. The information was in her head, but it wasn’t overwhelming her. “My word.” She said breathlessly.
“Indeed…Story Keeper.” Said Imran. That was his name, Alice knew that because he was in Wonderland and was a part of its history now. He was the Story Keeper no more, now he was just Imran and he wanted to go home.
“If that is all my dear I will take my leave.” He turned to walk toward the door. “One day when you get back to our world maybe, somehow, we will meet each other again.”
Alice smiled and nodded her head. “If that does happen, I would be very happy.”
Imran bowed low and left the room. Alice didn’t even need to use her new knowledge to know that he was already gone as soon as the door had been closed. She settled back down into her chair and took her cup of tea. Slowly her eyes were being drawn around the room as it dawned on her that she was sitting in the middle of a mansion that she owned.
**************
Many years later.
Alice sat down on an old leather chair in front of a slowly dying fire. At a table near her was a teapot and a cup of fresh tea. Next to this was a book with a ruby red cover, a quill was dancing across the page faster than and human hand could move, writing everything that was going on in Wonderland at that second. On the wall above the fireplace was a short sword and finely constructed bow. It had never been used but she had wanted to place it up there as a reminder of good times. On the mantel piece just below was her old trusty dagger sitting and shining in the dim light. Next to it was a small blue ball; the powerless bead of logic that had saved her so long ago. Finally there was a quiver full of arrows, they had never been used but they had some sentimental value to Alice. At the side of the fireplace was a little something she had managed to collect at some point over the years. An old tailors dummy was dressed in the actual suit of armour that she had worn when she and Michelle had raided the palace during the final battle. Around the dummies shoulder she had hung her old satchel, now empty.
It was amazing being the Story Keeper, not only could she travel across the vast miles to wherever she wanted to go in wonderland but her body had healed itself almost instantly. Every injury and scar she had picked up during her quest had vanished, faded away to nothing as if it had never happened.
She had been here for almost twelve years and Imran had been right, she had enjoyed it all. Wonderland held so many strange places and people and she had visited so many of them during her time. From the beautiful glass lake high in the mountains where the water stayed completely still even during high winds to the rustic village of Rondi where most of the residents were farmers and they had learned to tame giant birds that stood taller than any man and used them instead of horses. She had even brought herself to meet with Mina and Kappu a few times over the years. They hadn’t known she was Alice, Mina thought she was Morgana the witch and Kappu saw her as Kata. She had brought up her name of Alice just once and they both seemed to miss her and wished to see her again a lot and had held onto happy memories of the time they had spent with her, long or brief as it had been. She hadn’t brought up the subject of herself again. It had been strange to talk about herself in the third person, also it was weird to actually know what some people thought about her when she technically wasn’t around.
Suddenly Alice felt an awakening in her. There was someone from her world that had entered Wonderland. Imran had once said that she would know when her successor had arrived, he had been right. Alice placed the cup of tea on the table and rose to her feet. She had to go and meet the young man.
*****************
“Lisa?” Yelled the young teen. “Lisa? Can you hear me?”
The young man was about fifteen, he had been going for a walk in the woods with his cousin and had become lost. He had stepped out into the trees to answer a call of nature and when he had tried to find his way back to the path he had become seriously lost. He hadn’t ever seen trees like these before.
“LISA?”
He pushed through some low branches and bushes and came into a clearing. Sitting on a large rock was a woman. Actually she looked just a few years older than he was. She was dressed in a scarlet bodice with trousers of the same colour and black riding boots. She had long blonde hair and blue eyes that seemed full of wisdom beyond her years. The only other thing she had was a small silver broach in the shape of a star.
“Hello Liam.” She said in a kind voice.
“How do you know my name?” He demanded in slightly fearful voice, he was weary of this stranger that dressed in such a strange manner. He had never seen a woman wearing clothes like that. The woman just smiled and flicked a little hair over her shoulder.
“I have several names.” She said enigmatically. “To some I am known as Kata; a travelling warrior maiden without a home who has never been defeated in battle. Others know me as Morgana the witch who can travel many miles in the blink of an eye. And to fewer still I am Alexia; The lost Princess who travels the world to see its many wonders. Few know my real title and even fewer still know my true name. But you shall my dear boy. Follow me and all your questions will be answered.” She stood up and held out her hand toward him. “Come now.” She said sweetly. “You have a great task ahead of you and I much to explain.”
Poor Liam was so frightened and confused and even draw in by some strange power this woman seemed to have. Was she a witch, or did he somehow just trust her naturally? He didn’t know, but the next thing he knew he found himself taking her hand and she led him towards a large mansion sized brick house that had somehow emerged from nowhere.
