Blue Beard
The Unloved Man
It was not to long ago that there was a man who lived in a rather large estate on the outside of a town. Between the town and his home was a large forest. Now this man was well known for many reasons; his charity, his manners and his caring. But far and above all that, he was known for his blue beard, to which no one could explain, and for his desire of men. He had taken many men as partners, but sooner or later, they seemed to disappear.
Now in the town were three frieds, each of whom were also homosexual, and while they hardly ever had the pleasure of having another man, they did not sleep with each other out of a respect for their friendship. Blue Beard had heard of these men and decided that he would have one for a partner. The youngest of the three, Ronald, decided that it would be he that Blue Beard should have as a partner. While it was well known that Blue Beard was physically unattractive and a bit of a Sugar Daddy, he decided that his family could do well from being linked to Blue Beard. So he accepted the invitation. His friends, Raphael and Raymond were happy for him, although both were slightly envious of his sudden riches. And so it was that the man no other man could love was once again in a relationship. Ronald was treated very well and was never given a angry word or an unhappy tone of voice.
One day, it came to pass that Blue Beard had to travel to one of his estates far off in the land. He took Ronald and at him down.
‘While I am gone, I do not wish for you to be saddened, so I will give you the master key to the house. It will open any door and you are free to look around and do what you will. However, I forbid you to go into the room at the end of the passage on the second floor. Do I make myself clear?’ Blue Beard asked firmly but politely.
‘Yes, I understand,’ Ronald answered.
‘Take with you this Pearl necklace and wear it always in my absence, so that you know I am with you,’ Blue Beard wsaid, and he put the necklace on him.
When Blue Beard had gone into the forest and was well on his way, Ronald started to look through the house. There were books to read, games to play both in and outdoors, and a many other things to do. But as the days went past, Ronald grew more and more curious as to the contents of the room at the end of the passage on the top floor. Finally, nothing could distract him from finding out what was in there. He took the master key and went to the door. He unlocked it and went in. Much was his shock and horror when he saw the dead bodies of the many men and boys Blue Beard had once had for partners, and the floor was covered in blood. Ronald gave a yell, and at the same time, the pearl necklace fell from his neck and landed in the blood. Ronald took the necklace and tried to wash it clean. But it as bespelled and no matter how hard he tried or with what method he used, the blood would not come off the magical pearl.
Soon, Blue Beard returned from his travels. He politely asked to see the pearl. Ronald showed it to him, and it was still stained with blood.
‘You disobeyed me and went into the room, did you not?’ Blue Beard asked, enraged at his partners disobedience. Ronald was to frightened to speak. So Blue Beard took Ronald by the hair and dragged him to the room upstairs and killed him by chooping off his head.
After a time, Blue Beard announced Ronald had disappeared, and that no one could find him. There was a search for him in the forest, but to no avail. Blue Beard approached the two friends of Ronald and asked if one of them would come and live with him in his estate as his partner. It was Raymond who agreed this time.
And as time went on, Blue Beard was called away again. He had washed the pearl clean and given it to Raymond, along with the same instructions while he was away. After his departure, Raymond searched the house for some sign of his lost friend, in the thought there might be foul play at hand. After a few days of searching the grounds and the house, he found nothing, so he decided that the answer was in the room upstairs. As before, he went upstairs and went into the room. When he saw what was there, his beheaded friend and the other bodies, he yelled in horror, and like before, the pearl fell from his neck and into a pool of blood. Raymond had no more luck getting the pearl clean than Ronald had. Blue Beard returned to find the Pearl covered in blood and he beheaded Raymond as well.
Raphael, who was a lot more cunning than his friends, decided he would also be a partner of Blue Beard. People warned him of Blue Beard, but he refused to listen. So he went to live with Blue Beard in the house beyond the forest. After a few months, Blue Beard was called away again. He gave Raphael the pearl necklace and the master key. After Blue Beard had left, Raphael took off the pearl necklace and hid it behind a vase in his room. He then went straight to the room he had been forbidden to enter and opened the door. Sure enough, there were his friends bodies, beheaded and laying on the ground. Raphael set to work and put the heads back onto the bodies. The magic of Blue Beard’s pearl faded and they were brought back to life again. Raphael told them how foolish they had been for not leaving the pearl someplace safe, but promised to get them out alive. He hid them in the house and waited for Blue Beard to return.
‘Let me see the pearl,’ Blue Beard said as he and Raphael had exchanged pleasantries. Raphael, who had put the necklace back on, took it off and handed it to him. Blue Beard examined it and found no trace of blood. He thought that Raphael had been obedient and therefore did not question him further.
