Around noon, Hook emerged from his cabin heading down to the main deck inspecting the ship. It seemed that everything was in order and the men had worked themselves into a frenzy to get everything ship shape. Either way there was more work to be done this day, “Prepare the landing party to go ashore.” He ordered walking back up the stairs returning to his Cabin.
All the men looked around at each other at a lost for words. No matter how hard they worked he always found something out of place that needed to be fixed and seen to immediately. Smee looked about, “Well, you heard the Capt’n! Get your gear we’re goin ashore!”
Caitlin had woken already and gotten cleaned up and dressed. James chuckled to himself when he returned to his cabin, finding her sitting at his desk with a quill and parchment. She was not used to writing with such tools, and it was taking her a few moments to learn how to use them. It was frustrating her a bit that she had to keep dipping the quill into the ink before she could continue to write. Saying nothing he picked up his weapons putting them on his person preparing to leave. “I see you have found a way to entertain yourself this day. May I ask what you are writing?”
Caitlin didn’t look up at him as she became determined to get her thoughts down onto the parchment. “I’m writing in my journal.” Hook stopped looking up at her to see what exactly she was writing on, worried she might have found the book he had locked away in the bottom drawer of his desk. Caitlin sighed, “I’m writing a journal is what I meant to say.” She said softly as she continued to fight with the quill and ink trying to get coordinated enough to put the two together. Hook sighed trying to keep his relief from showing to much.
“I see.” Reaching for his hat and picking it up he walked over behind her looking over her shoulder to see her progress. “May I show you something that might help my dear?” He questioned. Caitlin gave a loud sigh of frustration and leaned back to let him know she would accept any help he had to offer. He chuckled a bit putting down his hat, leaning down beside her taking her hand with his good hand. James guided her hand over showing her how to dip the quill into the ink, and then brought it back to the page. “You shall find that if you write in script, rather then print you will get a lot more words . . .” he paused guiding her hand back to the pot of ink and dipping the quill again before returning it to the page, “. . . onto the parchment before having to get more ink.”
Caitlin watched him intently, until finally he released her hand to let her try it on her own. She sat up and did exactly as he’d instructed. Her eyes lit up and she grinned wide finding that he was right, now she was getting four or five words to her one she was writing before. It didn’t take her very long to get the full hang of it and the page was quickly filled with her words. James smiled seeing the light in her eyes and reached up with his hook brushing her hair back from her shoulder, kissing her neck affectionately. “We shall return at dusk. I am leaving two of my most trustworthy men to guard my most precious possession.” He kissed her neck again before standing and reaching for his hat, “I will have one of the men bind a book of blank parchment for your journal if you truly wish to keep one.” Reaching for his pistol he put it at his side walking to the door and opening it.
He started to go out but stopped and turned back to Caitlin, “And Caitlin,” She looked up at him stopping her writing for a moment. “It ‘tis a beautiful day outside today, be sure you do not spend all your time locked away and go out on deck to enjoy it.” She smiled and dipped the quill into the ink beginning to write again. Hook headed out of the Cabin closing the doors and joined the rest of the men, as they went ashore to continue with his plan to capture Peter Pan.
On another part of the island, there was another gathering in a underground hollow beneath one of the large trees. Peter sat at the head of his table looking at his lost boys, “It hasn’t been any fun around here lately. Hook hardly ever tries to capture or kill us anymore. Tink says one of the fairies told her it was because of that new lady aboard his ship. The mermaids say the same.” Peter got his devilish and mischievous look on his face. “I have the greatest idea for an adventure. The most exciting, game we’ve ever played before. Who’s with me?” All the boys shouted and cheered ready to break this endless chain of boredom.
He smiled and leaned forward, “Okay, now . . . . here’s the plan . . .” motioning to come closer so they could keep their activities secretive. A small flash of light joined the huddled heads.
An hour later, Caitlin took James’ advice and emerged from the Cabin blinking her eyes a few times at the bright light before her eyes would adjust. Moving out onto the second deck she could feel the cool sea breeze blowing over the ship. The Captain had been absolutely right it was a beautiful day. Turning, she quickly made her way down the stairs to the main deck looking about. That was odd; she didn’t see either of the guards that Hook had said he’d left behind. Perhaps they were below decks for the moment, or tending to some chore they wanted to get a jump on before the Captain returned to the ship.
Caitlin just shrugged and decided it was a good chance for her to look about the ship and see what all there was to see. She’d not really been able to look around very much, nor did anyone think to give her anymore of a tour then the brig and the Captain’s cabin. Looking around, she saw the stairs that she knew lead down to the brig but remembered that she saw other stairs that perhaps lead to another part of the ship. As if afraid she was going to get caught, she looked from left to right then hurried over to the door and pulled it open going inside.
“Hello?” She called out wondering if one of the two guards, if not both, where down below the deck. Pausing a moment, she had no reply to her call and decided it was safe to proceed. Moving down the stairs she found herself entering the armory. She paused looking about at all the different weapons and ammunitions that it held. “So this is where it was.” Smee wouldn’t let her go down with him to the armory when he retrieved the swords for their sparring contest like she had requested before. He’d decided that the Captain would not approve of that in the least bit.
She looked about for a few moments, before turning on her heel and heading back up the stairs wanting to see every deck of the ship before her husband returned and caught her snooping about.
On the island, Hook watched over his men as they worked hard carrying out the blue prints for his plan. Looking at his notes he looked at the work that had been done so far. Growling he began to shout, “SMEE!!! Have them put that over there, THERE. You mutton-headed dolts! What is the point of putting that there, it would defeat the entire purpose of the other devices!” Smee nodded and started shouting directions to the crewmembers as Hook moved to the next section inspecting the work. Looking up at the sun he sighed before growling, “IF this shrubbery is not cut and replaced by dusk, I shall do a little cutting of my own!!”
Giving a loud sigh of annoyance he walked up to a rock formation looking over the trees of Neverland. He could see the sails of his ship off in the distance, and narrowed his eyes. Hook had this nagging, very annoying feeling in the back of his mind as his gaze stayed towards the Jolly Rodger. Shaking his head he decided it was merely paranoia that pledged his thoughts. Of course Caitlin would be safe on his ship, he’d left two guards who had never had one strike against them. They were the bravest in battle, and always followed his rules. They wouldn’t dare harm her and would rather face whatever end would befall them, rather then their Captains wrath.
“Capt’n!” Smee’s voice cried interrupting Hook’s thoughts and pulled him back into the forest with the rest of his crew. Turning he looked at his first mate in complete irritation.
“What is it.” He said in a tone that made sure Smee knew he was not happy with the interruption.
“We got some problems Capt’n. Them bloody fairies are everywhere. They keep trying to stop us from doin our work.” Hook rolled his eyes smacking Smee with his plans, handing them to him.
“You know the phrase that will rid them of such an obstacle, have the men utter the words a few times and they shall flee and not return until they are sure we have gone.” He ordered giving his first mate a dark look.
“Yes Capt’n, right away.” Smee turned and hurried off to go do as he’d been instructed. Hook turned back taking one more look in the direction of the Jolly Rodger. Something wasn’t right, he could feel it.
“What are you up to this time Pan?” He spoke allowed as his eyes moved upwards towards the pastel colored clouds against the blue sky. He hated this place, he hated that boy, he hated everything about the world he’d been imprisoned in so long ago. Caitlin had begun to ease some of the day to day agony he was forced to endure, he was thankful the idea entered his mind to search out one that would be his defense against the insolent youth’s taunting chants.
Back on the ship Caitlin at managed to visit and explore each and every deck of the Jolly Rodger. IT was much larger when seen from the inside the it looked on the outside. She began making her way back up the stairs to the main deck eating a large green apple she’d retrieved from an apple barrel in the galley. She loved apples, it was quite the nice surprise to find them there as if they had just been waiting for her to go exploring.
She continued to wonder about with large, awe filled eyes at everything about her new home, she couldn’t remember ever seeing something quite like it. It all made her feel like she was in some sort of fairy tale. Caitlin was to incredibly swept up with her venture to stop and notice there was no sign of the guards James had said he was going to leave behind. Making her way back up from below, she wondered out onto the deck of the ship as she paused a moment. A strange yet familiar feeling having suffered from it so many times before, returned to haunt her once again. Her eyes wondered about the deck, “Hello? . . . . pirates?” She questioned loudly taking a few more steps out onto the deck expecting to see someone pop out in sight and ask her what she wanted.
A chill went up her spine when no answer came. Thinking back quickly to when she was down below, she couldn’t remember hearing anyone come along side the ship to board. The men always made such a huge ruckus when they returned after a venture out to the island, there was usually no way to mistake them before they even pulled along side. “James?” She said in a quiet yet hopeful whisper, not being able to get any louder.
A shadow passed over her blocking the sun for a split second. It was much like the one that she had seen on their wedding day as she slowly marched up the isle. Her body jumped causing her to drop her apple. She quickly turned her eyes upward scanning to see what had made the shadow, yet she saw nothing. Her heart raced in her chest as she found it almost impossible to breathe.
Caitlin closed her eyes shaking her head, suddenly feeling very foolish. “Your being such a paranoid scaredy Cat.” She said out loud scolding herself. “Stop it right now. James just went a shore for a little while. He and the rest of the pirates will be back at dusk just as he said. Who on earth could possibly get out here to the ship.” Caitlin made her self fell a little better with her reassurances, and reached up running her fingers through her hair a few times. Shaking her head at herself again she headed across the deck to the stairs intending to go back to the Cabin.
However halfway up the steps, she heard and felt something go right by her. When she looked up to see what it was, once again she saw nothing. Now she knew someone or something was there with her. There was no mistaking it this time. Caitlin quickly reached down gathering her skirts and pulled them up enough so she could move without tripping and falling. She ran up the stairs as fast as her feet could carry her, running inside and slamming the cabin doors shut. That feeling she’d felt outside carried over even stronger here, she stopped her movements almost feeling the eyes boring into her back. “Enjoy your outing my beautiful flower?”
Caitlin gave a huge sigh of relief recognizing the voice to belong to James. Reaching up she placed her hand over her heart feeling like she could breathe again still facing the cabin doors. “Oh James, I’m so glad your back . . . I kept having the strangest . . .” She had turned around as she spoke to walk towards him but she stopped cold in her tracks. There in James’ chair sat the boy called Peter Pan. He put his feet up and wore one of James’ hats pulled low over his eyes. The youth had made himself quite at home including stretching his feet up on the Captains desk. He gave Caitlin a very mischievous grin that spanned from ear to ear. She frowned feeling incredibly annoyed seeing him burrowed in James things and took a step towards him her fists clinched tight at her side. “What do you think you’re doing in here? If you get caught in our cabin James will . . . .”
Peter Pan jumped up suddenly brandishing his sword, “Silence! You are my prisoner!” He put his fingers to his mouth and gave a loud whistle. Suddenly at least half a dozen young boys jumped from hiding places in the cabin with a loud yell swinging weapons and daggers of there own, that stopped Caitlin’s heart. There we’re more children here? The Cabin doors behind her burst open as many more young boys flooded the room surrounding her.
Their proud leader walked forwards looking up at her holding the top of his blade to her throat, much in the same fashion she had held her sword to his throat just a few days before. Even though Peter remember it quite well, Caitlin did not, nor did she have any sort of clue of the grudge he held against her. Closing her eyes feeling very rattled by all this, she swallowed the knot that found it’s way to her through, and grit her teeth hard together, “I thought . . . you hated pirates.” Opening her eyes she looked at him squarely, “Have you turned pirate yourself already?” She’d decided when he gloated at her about cutting Hook’s hand off and feeding it to a crocodile she didn’t like this kid very much. “Or is it that secretly you admire Captain Hook and you want to be just like him?”
His smile faded at her words, she’d said that in front of his lost boys and he actually heard some of them giggle. He gave them a sharp look that made them instantly silence their laughter. He looked back at Caitlin and his eye twitched not liking how she seemed to always find the right words to say to insult him. Suddenly he found his mischievous smile and stepped back to steps, lowering his sword. Instantly, the large gang of adolescent boys attacked Caitlin pulling her to the floor and holding her down as they tied her hands and feet making sure she couldn’t hardly move much less get free. They tied a gag in her mouth, and a blindfold around her eyes and wrapped a sheet around her to make her easier to carry.
Peter flew up into the air still wearing Hooks hat, having every intention of keeping it. He spun his sword about several times throwing it up in the air and catching it showing off to the full extent of his talent with a blade. “Back to the hide out men! Bring the prisoner, and we shall ransom her for her safe return to the ship. Unless she tries to escape and we have to kill her.” He laughed loudly very pleased with himself for the first part of his plan to have gone so smoothly, and flew up into the air. His little glowing friend flew up to join him and the band of boys hustled Caitlin off the ship.
Aurora had watched the entire occurrence with great curiosity and her wings fluttered as her eyes lit up when they took her away from the ship. It was more then she could have ever hoped for or dreamed of. They’d come and taken her away and now the Captain would be hers, all hers! She danced about on one of the rafters clapping her hands joyously. She stopped and her eyes went wide hearing Peter’s words. He would kill her if she tried to escape him. Oh joys of joys! Could this get any better? She watched happily giving a slight salute of gratitude as the boys left the ship with their ‘prisoner’, and Peter fly away.
A few hours later, the pirates where packing up their tools and gear for the day as Hook oversaw everything. One of his men rushed up to him with a book holding it up to him, “’ere ye go Capt’n, I just finished up not but a few minutes ago.” James snatched the book out of his hands looking over it.
“You kept everything to my exact specifications, correct?” He said looking over the black leather binding around at least a hundred or more blank parchment papers. Carved into the cover were beautiful designs of flowers, and in the middle carved into the leather was her name, ‘Caitlin Wendy Hook’. The letters were raised with pure gold. It was perfect in every way and he couldn’t be more pleased. He handed it back to the man, “I want this wrapped and bound in cloth before we get back to the Jolly Rodger.” He quickly bowed taking the book back and hurrying off to see it was done.
As they headed back to the ship, silently James couldn’t wait to give his wife the gift he’d had made for her. Knowing how much she loved to write, he was sure to see that beautiful smile and excitement that made her face light up in such a way he felt he could be blinded by her radiance. It was certain she would want to sit down immediately and write something in her new treasure. A small smirk was the only sign that could be seen of the thoughts he held in his mind.
Standing on deck he waited impatiently for the rest of the men to exit the boats. When the craftsmen finally got up onto the deck, Hook walked over to him and snatched the package away from him. “You move slower then molasses in the dead of winter.” He growled turning as he started to head for his Cabin.
“Capt’n! We have a problem!” Smee’s voice called trying to gain the Captain’s attention. Hook stopped in his tracks and rolled his eyes, not wanting to be stopped he had something he’d wanted to do from the first time the idea sprung to his mind that morning. He turned and looked at his first mate with a look that let him know his displeasure. Smee pointed upwards, where most of the men were looking. Hook looked up to see his two guards he’d left behind to keep Caitlin safe tied back to back with gags in their mouths, hidden from most of the deck by the sail they were hung from. His eyes grew wide as it only took him a second to think and he cast his eyes in the direction of his cabin doors, “ . . . Caitlin . . .” He breathed.
The Captain bolted up to the double doors dropping the gift he’d brought back for her and threw them open, “Caitlin!” He called out as his eyes scanned the room seeing nothing but a few things thrown about. He moved to her closet opening it and going inside, finding no trace of her he moved to the small room he’d had added in for her, “Caitlin?” She was neither there nor anywhere else. He looked about unable to form a rational thought not knowing where she could have gone.
He stopped as his mind suddenly cleared completely once his eyes caught a glimpse of his desk. Walking over he looked down, seeing a piece of the dress Caitlin had been wearing that morning, with a piece of Pan’s vines he wore as clothing. Picking it up his eyes grew wide as his teeth started to grind, his hand crushing the vines as his eyes began to glow bright crimson. “How DARE you.” There was no mistaking who had taken his bride captive, and he would pay dearly for such a sin as this.
