Chapter 14

When Alice walked into her last class before lunch and met Jessica at the door she groaned. Jessica immediately gave her a look. “So, listen, Alice, um…I realize you said all of your brothers are off limits but Jasper and I were having a very nice conversation yesterday before you interrupted.”

“Really? Huh, I will have to watch that.” Alice lied smoothly and took her seat. She had timed it so that when she got there class would be starting. Jessica had to sit too and the teacher began. Alice grinned trying to figure out how they were gonna break it to Jessica, and when the teacher handed out the pop quiz, the idea came to her.

When class was over she slowly gathered her things so it would take her longer. Jessica picked up their conversation right where they left off. Alice just ignored her. When she finally had all her things in order she turned to head for the cafeteria and saw Jasper leaning against the wall waiting for her again. Before Jessica could even process that he was there; Alice launched herself at him and jumped. She wrapped her legs around his waist and kissed him. “I aced a pop quiz!” She said happily and then leapt back down. He laughed.

“Um, Jasper, could I talk to you for a minute?” Jessica asked quietly. Alice frowned. She thought she’d gotten the message across. Jasper put up his hand to calm her and asked with his eyes for Alice to move down the hall. Jessica felt triumphant at her leaving. Alice moved on and headed for the Cafeteria.

“Yes, Jessica?” Jasper said, trying to keep his cool considering the blatant rudeness this girl was showing his Alice.

“Well, your sister has told me you were off limits and she has been quite rude to me but I am persisting because I feel something and I think you feel it too. I’d really like to go out with you this weekend. Maybe catch a movie or something.” She looked hopeful.

“Jessica, I think there is something you are just not understanding. If you feel something for me it is only because you don’t know me…”

“I’m trying to get to know you.” She interrupted.

“You will never know the real me. When Alice told you all of us were off limits, she meant it.”

“I don’t understand what makes you off limits. You are taken, I know that much but long distance relationships never work out. Just give me a chance.”

“I am taken. Very taken. It’s not long distance either. Are you so blind you refuse to see it?”

“What, did Lauren get to you first?” Jessica pouted.

“No. I’m in love with Alice.” Jasper said flatly. “She is my soul mate.”

“A..alice?” Jessica asked in shock. “Your SISTER?”

“As I have told you repeatedly. She is not my sister. My only real sister is Rosalie.”

“But you live together as brother and sister.”

“No, we live together as a couple, just as Rosalie and Emmett do. I will marry Alice someday. No one will ever come between us. It’s time for you to give up this fantasy you have of us being together and leave Alice and I alone. My family is off limits, just as Alice told you. Now, we have been remarkably patient with you about this. I am not a patient man and if you should in any way take your disappointment out on Alice, I shall be very nicked off. I hope we understand each other.” With that he stormed off to the Cafeteria to find Alice. Jessica followed meekly behind.

He entered to find Alice sitting with the rest of the family but for once she wasn’t eating, she was instead pulling apart a roll and crumbling it to dust. She didn’t look up at his entrance. He noticed how many guys were still eyeing her like they wanted a taste. Jasper decided he was going to put a stop to that right away.

He stalked up to Alice knowing that many eyes were following him. By the time he was right in front of her and she had looked up at him, the eyes of the entire cafeteria were on them. She stood when she saw the murderous look on his face. Jasper came to a halt right in front of her. “Jasper?” She questioned. “What is it?”

“They won’t stop. None of them will. We have to give a public demonstration.” He bit out before pulling her to him and locking his lips to hers. Instantly, Alice’s arms wound around him and he held her close as he deepened the kiss. Alice turned to jelly and could feel herself melting against him. They finally stopped when the heard Edward clear his throat.

“I don’t think this is the proper place for those thoughts you are thinking, Jasper. But don’t worry, forecast says sun for tomorrow so you will have all day together.” Alice turned bright red and Jasper laughed. He sat in her chair and pulled her down into his lap before turning to his brother.

“Sunny huh? Good.” Then they turned to other topics of conversation. Much of the day went by in a blur. Alice heard the whispers behind her but never let it get to her. People tended to steer clear of them especially after the lunch display. When the day was finally over, Alice packed up her things and headed for the car.

“Jasper, can we stop by a music store on the way home?” She asked as Jasper met up with her at her locker.

“Sure, what did you want?”

“I just like to listen to music while I’m studying and radio just doesn’t cut it. I just wanted to get one or two cds.”

“Sure, but you know you can get as many as you want right?”

“I only have enough money for a couple.”

“You are family, Alice and our family has a bit of money. You can get whatever you want.”

“I only need a couple.” She answered firmly. Jasper sent Edward his thoughts and saw his brother nod. Edward would be listening while they were in the store and take note of everything she liked. Then he would come in after they were gone and pick up all the cds she wanted but did not get. They would surprise her with them. They got into the car.

“Jasper, what does it being sunny tomorrow have to do with us being able to spend all day together?”

“Oh, I forgot you didn’t know that yet. We can’t be seen in the sunlight. We kind of glitter or sparkle in the sunlight so anytime there are sunny days we can’t go to school. If we were seen people would know there was something different about us.”

“Oh. Okay. But I can still go to school.”

“No. You can’t. See Carlisle and Esme tell schools that when it’s sunny we go camping and hiking together as a family. You are family so you can’t go either. Then it would look like something was up.”

“Won’t I fall even more behind?”

“This coming from the girl who aced her pop quiz today? Baby, we won’t let you fall behind. We have all taken these classes numerous times. We will help you. Okay? No need to worry at all.”

Alice smiled at him and Jasper couldn’t help but feel desire for the tiny girl next to him. She had been through so much and yet she still had such a positive outlook on everything. He would have given up just as most people would have. They would be bitter and angry but not his Alice. She was all sunshine and light. He felt hope for the first time since becoming the monster he was. If Alice could love him regardless of him being a vampire then he could definitely live a normal life with her. He vowed silently to give her everything she could ever want and to make her life as happy as could be so that this angel would never want to leave him.

They continued talking all the way to the store and home. He could not believe that anyone could be so happy over picking up two cds. He drove slow and took back roads. He knew that Edward would beat them home. He could feel Alice’s suspicion and he knew that she knew something was going on but she couldn’t tell exactly what. At least he didn’t think so then he noticed a small smirk. When they pulled up at the house, Edward was waiting outside and leaning up against his car. Jasper looked at him curiously.

“Her gift is neat.” Edward said dryly. “She knew what you were going to do so she bought the first two cd’s she wanted and wouldn’t look at anything else but you.

“But…”Jasper sputtered looking at her.

“Sorry, honey, I always get my way.” Alice chirped before heading inside. Edward smiled at Jasper’s stunned expression and followed his fire bolt of a sister into the house leaving Jasper staring after them.
