“Christian! Christian, is that you?” I came through the garage door and heard Ana calling my name.
“Ana?” I headed into the living room. “Coming!” Ana came down the steps with Teddy in her arms. I kissed them both hello, and she put the baby down on the carpet to play. “Everything okay, babe?” I sunk into the couch, and Ana plopped herself onto my lap, her arms around my neck. “Everything’s wonderful, Christian.” She nuzzled her nose to mine. “I think I’m pregnant!” she squealed into my cheek. “What?! Really?” I looked at her with big eyes, surprised that it would happen so fast. “Yes! Well, I mean, I’m not positive. I have a really good feeling, you know, mother’s intuition.” She snuggled into me as I held her. “I’m just surprised, because your shot didn’t end that long ago.” “Well, yeah, but I mean, Teddy was conceived while I was on the shot, too.” “Yes, but you had missed your last shot, and what are the chances of that happening twice?” I was hesitant for Ana to get her hopes up. “What are the chances? What are the chances that we would meet? That you would fall in love with me? That you would turn out to be the best father in the world? Our entire relationship has been a game of chance.” “Okay, baby. Did you take a test?” “Yes. I only had one left. At first, only one line appeared, but then I checked back and could see the second line!” Ana kissed me, and I returned the kiss, but still wanted to be sure before we began celebrating. Teddy began to fuss on the carpet, pulling himself up on the couch and reaching his arms up to us. Ana hopped off my lap and lifted Ted. “Ana, I want us to go see Dr. Greene and get a real test done so we’re sure.” “Okay, I’ll call her, but I feel it in my bones, Christian! I’m already feeling more tired. I’m almost sure this is it!” My wife had the biggest smile on her face as she cuddled Teddy on her hip. “Maybe you’re just tired from lugging around a heavy one-year-old all day. Come here, Ted.” I took my son from her arms. “I’m going to get dinner ready.” Ana sauntered off to the kitchen, disappointed in my questioning reaction, I knew. I sat back down on the carpet with Teddy, guiding him as we played with a barn house toy. “Which one do you want Teddy? The doggy or the kitty?” “Oof oof!” Teddy replied. I handed him the little dog and watched him bang it on the barn door. “Oh, Ted. You have to help me take care of Mommy. I’m worried she might get her hopes up.” Teddy looked up at me, mirroring my serious attitude. He really was my mini-me. I laughed at his expression, grabbing the duck toy and making quacking noises against his cheek. He broke his serious streak with a giggle. I pulled him into my lap, kissing his copper hair. If Ana really was pregnant already, Teddy would be a brother before he was two years old. Maybe we should have waited a few months longer. I was confused, beginning to question everything, trying to protect my wife from potential disappointment, and not knowing what I really wanted after all. Ana came back into the living room. I felt her hands on my shoulders and welcomed her to join us in my lap. I cradled my family quietly, trying to untangle my thoughts. “Is dinner ready?” I asked my wife quietly. “Yes. Christian?” “Yes, love?” I stroked her hair, keeping my other arm around Teddy, who was looking up at us with a chubby-cheeked smile. “I’m going to wait until we go see Dr. Greene before I get too excited about this. I haven’t even had a missed period yet.” She laid her head back on my shoulder, and I rubbed my hand soothingly along her thigh. “That’s good, baby. And in return, I’ll try not to get cold feet about Blip Two.” Ana smiled. “I will be so thrilled if you are pregnant, but I just don’t want us to jump the gun on anything.” I kissed her cheek. “Let’s go eat.” Ana got off my lap, pulling Teddy up with her. I followed my family into the kitchen. My perfect little family, at least for today.Keep up the reviews!
