By the time Jasper came inside, Alice was in the kitchen with the rest of the family laughing about something. She was perched up on the kitchen counter with one leg tucked under her. Jasper smiled at the sight. “So since you all can’t go out in the sunlight; what do you do on sunny days?” Alice asked everyone.

“Most of the time we go hunting.” Edward answered. “We just can’t be seen in town or anywhere other humans are. It’s honestly a little easy to avoid them though. We can all hear a human heart beat from a long distance away and we can smell them before they even get close enough to see us. Our speed also helps; we can get away before they even knew we were there.”

Alice nodded with understanding. Esme touched her cheek gently. “You are free to roam around here as long as one of us is with you if you go into the forest. There are a number of wild animals out there and we don’t want to see you get hurt. Feel free to roam around the house. If you like reading Carlisle has an extensive library and if you can’t find what you want there, we can buy you whatever you want.” Jasper and Edward both laughed and everyone else looked at them in confusion while Alice smirked.

Jasper told everyone what had happened. Rosalie looked shocked but the rest all laughed. “Why would you turn that down?” Rosalie asked in confusion; to her, it was impossible to not accept the wealth that the family possessed. “We have money and you are one of us now.”

“I know but I just don’t feel right accepting that. I haven’t done anything to contribute to the household.” Alice answered her.

“But you are in high school. What exactly do you expect to contribute?”

“Alice, honey,” Esme said gently, “I appreciate what you are feeling but believe me when I tell you that we have plenty. You buying one of every cd in the store wouldn’t make a dent. You are my daughter and a member of this family. Do you really think that we won’t provide for you?”

“Oh, no, Esme.” Alice stared, looking stricken. “I know you will and I don’t mean it as an insult. There is a big difference between a bed and clothes when I had nothing and fun stuff like movies and cds.”

“Very well, then you leave Carlisle and I no choice. We will have to give you an allowance to do with as you will. This is just fun money. Say two thousand a week or should it be three?” She asked herself aloud.

“Three thousand a week?” Alice asked in shock. “Ok, ok, you win. No allowance. I’ll just accept what I’m given.” Esme smiled at her and Alice realized that Esme had just tricked her. Suddenly Alice’s eyes went out of focus. The vampires in the room froze except Jasper who was instantly in front of her. “Carlisle is on his way home and he wants to have a family meeting. We will all be there and he is going to tell us something big.”

Edward watched with her and saw that Alice turned pale as Carlisle spoke and the rest looked stricken. Jasper looked ready to kill. He jumped up from the table and stormed out with Alice trying to go after him. When Alice’s eyes refocused, she immediately looked over Jasper’s shoulder to meet his eyes.

‘When he leaves will you please go with him? I don’t want anything to happen to him. I couldn’t bear it.’ She asked silently. He nodded. They all heard Carlisle pull up and waited for him to come in.

“Good afternoon.” Carlisle said. “Everyone in the living room please. We have something to discuss.”

The vampires and Alice went silently into the living room and took their seats. Jasper sat next to Alice on the couch and took her hand in his. Carlisle stood in the middle of the room and looked at his family. “We need to do some planning.” He started. “I’ve been making inquiries about Alice’s background and trying to figure out how to make her a legitimate Cullen. I have found out that the vampire who was hunting her is not giving up as easily as we thought. He has humans helping him look and they are looking everywhere. One of his associates is already in Washington. He is looking for Alice. He will stop at nothing to get her. I have also been looking into your family Alice, trying to find anything that will help. I’m sorry to tell you that he got there first. He was hoping to induce you to come back if he put your family in danger but then he realized that they had no contact with you. I’m so sorry, Alice, he killed them all.”

Alice went completely white and made a sound of horror in her throat. Jasper’s throat clenched tight. His eyes went black. A murderous rage stole over him and he wanted to kill the other vampire. To rip out his throat. To rip off his head. To burn him and make sure that the vampire could never hurt his Alice.

“Jasper…it’s ok.” Alice choked out. “They haven’t been my family for a long time and my years with them weren’t happy ones. It will be fine. I was just in shock.” She touched his face gently and then kissed him. His marble body relaxed slowly. Everyone felt the rage dissipate out of the room. “So what do we do, Carlisle?”

“We need to make you a legitimate member of this family and have it be able to withstand scrutiny. The vampire won’t come himself unless he is very sure that you are here. Does anyone have any ideas?”

“I have a contact.” Jasper choked out. “We can get her all the papers and licenses and such for as far back as we need to.”

“Good.” Carlisle answered. “How long will it take?”

“I can go tomorrow morning to Seattle and handle it then. It usually takes about a week or so to get the stuff back on rush. He does an excellent job. I’ll need to drive your Mercedes for the tinted windows though.”

“Good. Do it.” Carlisle answered.

“Will you all be able to keep Alice safe while I am gone?” Jasper asked.

“Jasper, there are 5 of us and only one of him.” Emmett said. “Bring him on. I could use a good fight.”

“Jasper, they can keep me safe. I’ll be fine. How long will you be gone?” Alice asked.

“It should only take a couple of hours. I will go first thing in the morning and be back by lunch.”

“Good. Any other ideas?” Carlisle asked.

“Alice has seen herself become one of us. Why not have it happen now?” Rosalie asked. Jasper growled at her.

“No!” He answered forcefully. “It’s not her time to turn.”

“I’m just thinking it might be for the best. As a human she can give us away any time.” Their blond sister added.

“No! Dammit. I refuse to have her turned like this.” Jasper growled and jumped up and stormed out of the room. Alice went to chase him but Edward got there first.

“I’ll get him.” He told his sister and immediately went after his brother. Emmett followed right behind him.

Alice stood staring after him and then turned slowly to meet the eyes of her family. “I have an idea.” She said to everyone and told them her idea.

“Brilliant.” Esme said.

“That just might work.” Carlisle added. “We can definitely give it a try. In the meantime, Alice stays with one of us at all times unless she is in the house and then at least one of us is always home with her. Edward and Emmett will bring back Jasper and he will be ok with this solution.” Those left nodded their assent too. “Good, then it’s solved. We will go with your idea, Alice. We need you to work on appearing like you have been with this family forever.” Alice nodded her assent.

The family meeting broke up and Alice went up to her room and curled up on her bed. She could smell Jasper on her pillow and she cried softly in remembrance of her family. She wished Jasper was with her right then and then prayed that Emmett and Edward would get to him before he did anything.
