Yay! I was worried you guys wouldn't like the last chapter. :)
I changed the sheets and put the dirty ones into wash before Carlisle came over that night. I was limping, but it needed to be done.
Carlisle checked me over and said no permanent damage had been done, and nothing needed stitches. It was strange to have him checking me up. I could tell he was disappointed in Jasper.
He told me I would be sore for a few days, but it should heal quickly, if my previous injuries were any indication.
“Carlisle… How is Jasper?” I asked when he was finished.
“Well, Whitaker, he’s very angry and disgusted with himself. We could all feel it when he got home.”
“Will you tell him something for me?”
“Most certainly.”
“Tell him I love him. Tell him it’s not his fault; I made my choice and I knew what the consequences would be. He gave me chances to get away, but I didn’t take them. He needed me, so I gave what I had. It wasn’t his fault.” Carlisle was utterly surprised.
“I will tell him. But, Whitaker… May I ask you something?”
“Go ahead, doc.”
“You aren’t mad at him at all? Not even a little?”
“No. I made my choice.”
“He could have been gentler.”
“No, he wasn’t in control of himself.”
“Remarkable… You truly love him.”
“Yes, sir. He’s been there for me, so I was there for him.”
“I’m assuming he told you about us?”
“Yes, sir, right before Tucker attacked.”
“Tucker?”
“The nomadic vampire that caused Jasper to be so angry and started all this.”
“Well, that changes things…”
“How so?”
“I thought he was hungry when it happened. He didn’t tell me the story, only that you needed me.”
“Don’t go home feeling disappointed, please. It will only make him feel worse.” Carlisle nodded, gave me some pain medication, and told me to sleep.
I did, and I dreamt of Jasper…
I sat on the bench in Jasper’s clearing. In front of me stood Jasper. He was in the shadows of the trees, so I couldn’t see him clearly.
“Jasper?” I called. He stepped forward a little. “Come sit with me.” He shook his head.
“Goodbye, Whitaker,” he said.
“No!” He turned to leave. “Don’t leave!”
I shot up in bed, wincing when the pain hit me.
“Jasper,” I whispered forlornly, my head in my hands.
“I’m here.” I looked up and saw Jasper standing in the corner of my room. A wide grin split my face.
“It was just a dream… You’re not leaving! You’re here!” He didn’t answer. “Are you better?” I stood carefully and grabbed a clean set of clothes. He watched me sadly as I changed, controlling my features to hide any pain I was in.
When I had finished dressing, Jasper was holding out a glass of water and some Tylenol for me. I took them gratefully.
“I am sorry,” he whispered. “I am so very, very sorry.”
“As I told you last night, I’m fine.” He shook his head. I sighed and looked at my feet. Then, I felt his lips on my hair.
“Goodbye, love.” My head shot up.
“No! Don’t leave! Please! I don’t want my dream to come true!”
But he was already gone.
“No!” I sobbed, racing out of the house. I didn’t see him, but I took off into the woods anyway.
I heard a vicious snarling to my left, so I took off in that direction.
I saw a giant gray wolf attacking Jasper, clawing his sides and biting his shoulder, yet Jasper just lay there.
“Stop it, you brute! Stop!” The wolf looked up in surprise; its face was very expressive. It backed up a step, so I stood between it and Jasper. “Don’t you touch him again! Can’t you see he wasn’t fighting back?” The wolf’s ears lay back slightly and it growled a low warning. “I’m not scared of you. Leave him alone, you big bully.” The wolf seemed utterly shocked at my defiance. I turned my back and leaned down to help Jasper. “Where’s the treaty line?” Carlisle had explained to me about the Quileutes and the treaty.
The wolf didn’t move.
“Just show me where the line is so I can move him.”
The gray giant walked about twenty feet past us and stopped.
“Thank you.” I slid one arm across Jasper’s chest and the other under his arm. I pulled him backward towards the invisible line. It hurt, and it took all of my effort not to show it. “Will you help me please?” I asked the wolf.
It snorted at me, like a disbelieving laugh.
“Look, I want him off your territory as much as you do.”
It looked away, past me, and into the trees beyond.
“Fine, be that way.”
Its ears drooped slightly and its head lowered. I turned to see what had it in a submissive pose.
There was a larger, russet colored wolf stalking our way. He was obviously the leader. He sniffed at me and cocked his head.
“I’m trying to get him across the line, but that brute over there,” I pointed my thumb towards the gray wolf; “won’t do anything. Will you help me get Jasper over there so I can call the others for help?”
The russet wolf turned a glare on the gray. They seemed to have a silent conversation before the gray lay down in defeat. The russet snorted and turned to me. He gently picked up Jasper with his teeth and set him over the line before retreating.
“Thank you.” The russet wolf bowed his head and barked at the gray. They both bounded away into the forest. I sat behind Jasper and held him up. I almost choked when I finally took in the damage done to him.
There were four, two-inch deep, gashes from the middle of his neck to just above his hip, gashes that would’ve killed a human. His right leg seemed to be barely hanging on. His left arm had the same deep gashes across it, like he had held up his arm in defense. I touched his face, the seemingly only undamaged area of his body. His eyes were closed, but I could read the pain he was in.
“Jasper…” I whispered. I had my arm wrapped under his chin to cradle his head. He moved ever so slightly, and I felt something slice deeply into my inner elbow. I bit my tongue to hold in my scream when I saw Jasper had bitten me. There was a slight suction on my arm as he drank my blood. It felt strange. I pulled my arm away; rather, he allowed me to pull it away. “That’s enough.” I felt dizzy from blood loss, but I shook it off and retrieved Jasper’s phone from his pocket. I scrolled through contacts and found Carlisle, but he didn’t answer his phone. Ignoring the flaming pain in my right arm, hard as it was, I called Edward next.
“Hello?” he answered.
“Edward, it’s Whitaker. How quickly do you think you could make it to the treaty line behind my house?”
“Very. What is it?”
“There’s been an…accident. You may need to bring Emmett with you.” I hissed through my teeth as the pain spread. “Oh, and you might want to hold your breath.”
“We’re on our way.” He hung up and I slipped the phone into my pocket.
It was maybe two minutes before Edward and Emmett showed up. Silently, Emmett picked up Jasper and Edward lifted me. They weren’t breathing, as I had advised. I felt a rush of air and we were at the Cullen household.
Carlisle carefully took me from Edward. The fire was spreading through my body.
“Jasper sucked most of the venom out, but it’s too late to get the rest,” I heard Carlisle say.
“I’m changing, aren’t I?” I asked.
“Yes. I am sorry.”
“Don’t be. Give Jasper…” It was becoming hard to speak. Edward leaned over and whispered my wishes to Carlisle.
“Whitaker, you don’t have to do that.”
“It will help him, won’t it?”
“Yes.”
“And the change doesn’t need all of my blood.”
“No.”
“So just…give it to him.” I closed my eyes.
“Very well.”
I felt a needle at my arm and I succumbed to unconsciousness.
