When they had finished dinner, Charlie drove Bella to the Cullens’ for the party. Bella actually wondered if anyone would be able to find the place because of how far back in the woods it was. But, of course, that had been taken care of. The two trees at the end of the driveway had been decorated with Christmas lights. In fact, the whole driveway was lit up. “I helped,” Jacob boasted.
Billy turned to his son when the car stopped. “Maybe you shouldn’t go to this party,” he said quietly. He wouldn’t say the real reason in front of Charlie, but Jacob knew his dad was still upset about earlier.
“Dad, I was invited,” Jacob protested. “And besides, the house is gonna be crowded, so the whip and shackles will be safely tucked away.”
Billy’s jaw clenched but he said nothing more as Jacob got out of the car with Bella. “Does he really have a whip and shackles?” Bella whispered as they walked up to the front door.
“Wouldn’t you like to know,” Jacob smirked.
Alice opened the door to greet them, wearing a stunning red dress. “What do you think?” she asked, motioning to the living room. The furniture had been moved, and along the walls were tables full of delicious-smelling food. Edward and Liam were messing with a laptop computer and speakers.
Bella sighed. “I have no words…. How many people do you think will actually show up to this thing, anyway?”
“Probably all of them,” Alice smiled. “If nothing else, they’ll come to see the inside of our house.”
Liam started playing music and danced in the corner with Jacob. The first guests to arrive were Bella’s friends Angela, Eric, Jessica, and Mike. Angela gave Bella a hug, then froze, her gaze fixed on Liam. “Who is that?” she asked.
“That’s my Uncle Liam,” Edward answered. “He’s our DJ for the night. He’s also dating Bella’s friend Jacob Black.”
Both girls seemed rather disappointed, but Angela seemed intrigued. “So that means he’s…?”
“Yep, he’s fruity, in more ways than one.”
Jessica huffed. “Why are all the really hot guys always taken or gay?” Mike glared at her, but said nothing.
Over the next hour a steady stream of people came through the doors. There was lots of gawking and whispering among them, not knowing the Cullens could hear every word. Liam stayed by the laptop, pumping loud music through the speakers. Jacob remained glued to his side, occasionally glancing at the door.
His face lit up when Quil and Embry came in, and he rushed over to greet them. “Is it just you two then?” he asked.
Quil nodded. “Yeah, the others decided not to come but we figured it would be rude if your two best friends didn’t at least show up.”
“I’m glad you did.” Jacob smiled and led them back over to Liam. He’d been hoping they would all come, but this was at least a little progress. They even talked to Liam and tried to get to know him. Jacob could only hope the rest of the pack would come around, too.
When the party started breaking up they all noticed Jasper pulling Carlisle into the kitchen, with Alice close behind. Liam told Jacob to watch the laptop as he followed, but Jacob wasn’t going to stay behind this time. All eyes turned to him when he entered the kitchen. “I don’t want to be left in the dark anymore,” he stated. “Whatever is going on, it affects us, too.”
“He’s right,” Carlisle said, to everyone’s surprise. “Alice, tell us what you saw.”
“A decision has been made. They’re coming here.”
“How many?” Bella asked from the kitchen doorway. Apparently both she and Edward had also noticed something was going on.
“More than we can handle by ourselves,” Alice answered with a frown.
“Then we need to leave,” Bella insisted. “They’ll see I’m not here and they’ll leave.”
“But how many people will get hurt while they search for you?” Liam pointed out. “They certainly aren’t shy or squeamish.” He turned to look at Jacob. “But maybe with a little help....”
“No!” Bella shouted. “I’m not letting them get dragged into this, too.”
“It isn’t up to you,” Jacob argued. “I’ll have to talk to Sam about getting the pack involved, but I’ll help any way I can.”
“Good,” Jasper nodded. “Meet us in the clearing tomorrow, then. We’re going to have to sharpen our fighting skills and come up with tactics.”
They’d chosen the clearing where they played baseball, and they met as the sun peaked over the horizon. Edward and Bella were the last to arrive; Bella looked like she hadn’t slept all night. “Think they’ll show?” Edward asked Liam.
“Sam is a practical man,” Liam answered. He was fairly certain the wolves would cooperate for this. After all, they took pride in protecting their land. The business with him and Jacob would have to wait.
The family waited quietly for several minutes. Just when they were about to give up hope, eleven wolves emerged from the trees at the other side of the clearing. “You didn’t tell us your numbers had grown so much,” Edward frowned.
“And it’ll work to our advantage,” Liam said, motioning to Jasper to begin.
Jasper stepped forward into the clearing, the sun dazzling as it shone on his skin. He looked a little nervous, but that was understandable considering this was new territory for all of them. “Very well. First things first. Newborns aren’t quite what you’re used to. They still have human blood in their tissues, and that makes them faster and stronger than the rest of us.”
“But not very bright,” Liam added.
“Exactly.” Jasper nodded. “They go for the obvious kill, and they’ll expect you to do the same. That’s what you want to avoid. And whatever you do, don’t let them get your arms around you. They’ll crush you.”
Liam moved forward and motioned to Emmett to follow him. “Let’s do a demonstration. Emmett, hit me as hard as you can. Don’t hold back.”
Emmett shrugged and moved to slug Liam. In the blink of an eye Liam caught his hand and pushed it back, twisting it behind Emmett’s back. “Ow! Uncle!” Emmett cried.
“Yes, I’m your uncle, what’s your point?” Liam smirked. He finally let go when Carlisle glared at him.
“No, he’s not a newborn, he’s a freak,” Edward laughed, answering Sam’s question.
“Hey!” Liam protested. “I’m not a freak, I’m unique.”
“No, you’re a freak,” Carlisle teased. “You always have been, and you always will be.”
“Thanks, dear brother,” Liam responded sarcastically.
“You’re welcome,” Carlisle shot back. “But let’s get back to the business at hand. Jasper, Liam, take your places. Everyone else, form a line.”
Each vampire took a turn sparring with Liam and Jasper while the wolves watched. The red wolf that kept toward the tree line watched Liam with particular interest and barked every time the blond vampire finished off his opponent.
The most interesting fight was between Liam and Edward. Liam purposely didn’t block his thoughts just to make things interesting. The fight lasted several minutes and ended with Liam whirling around to elbow Edward right between his shoulderblades.
Edward hit the ground and didn’t move for several seconds. Then he rolled over with a groan. “Grapes?” he said, looking confused.
Liam laughed. “Didn’t you know? I name all my favorite finishing moves.” Bella rushed to Edward’s side to help him up. “Oh, yeah…” Liam mumbled, and turned to the wolves. “Sweetness, come here.”
The red wolf disappeared into the tree line for a moment, then Jacob emerged wearing only his cut-offs. “What do you need?”
Liam motioned to Bella. “Last night Carlisle and I were discussing what to do with Bella during the fight. They have her scent, and I’m sure you can understand why that’s a problem. If we tried to hide her, well, they’d just follow our scents. But we were thinking maybe if you carried her somewhere….”
“No!” Bella shouted. “I’m not going to go hide somewhere while all of you risk your lives!”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “You act as if you have a choice in this. Anyway, let’s test this theory.”
Bella tried to protest further, but Jacob was able to pick her up with little trouble and carried her away, kicking and loudly protesting. Edward didn’t look happy about the way they were treating Bella, but after fuming about it briefly he headed in the direction Jacob had gone.
Jacob returned to the clearing first, gently setting down a much calmer Bella. Edward was right behind him. “All I could smell was dog,” he reported, confirming their theory.
“Awesome!” Liam smiled. “Now we just have to pick a safe location.”
“No!” Edward yelled, growling at Jasper. Bella looked at him with a confused expression.
Liam sighed. “You are correct, but wouldn’t that be a bit dangerous?”
“What?” Bella asked, not liking being left out of the conversation.
“Jasper thinks it would be better if we used you as a distraction,” Edward explained. “But for once I agree with Liam. It’s too dangerous.”
“There may be a better way,” Liam pointed out. “I’ll just have to think about it. Jacob, tell Sam we’re going to have another practice session tomorrow morning, if you’d like to come again. Then we’re going hunting.”
“Joining me for lunch on the beach?” Jacob asked hopefully.
“Of course,” Liam smiled and leaned up to kiss his lover while giving his ass a good hard squeeze.
