Dr. Greene was able to squeeze us into her schedule one week later. I left work at lunchtime to pick up Ana at Grey Publishing. I parked outside and strode up to the reception desk.
“Hello, Mr. Grey,” the receptionist smiled up at me. “Can you let Mrs. Grey know I’m here?” “Of course.” She called up to Ana’s office, and a few minutes later, Ana made her way out the elevator. I took her hand and gave her a peck hello before leading her out to the car. We sat silently at first as I drove. She was trying to hide her excitement about being pregnant, and I was trying to hide my nerves about receiving bad news. “So, it was nice of Dr. Greene to fit us in so soon, huh?” I tried to break the silence. “Yes, very nice of her.” More silence followed before Ana spoke again. “I wonder how far along I am.” “Ana…” “No, I know, Christian, I might not be pregnant yet, and that’s okay. I’m prepared. But I’m also prepared to be really excited if I am!” she squealed out the last part, a big smile breaking across her face. “Me, too,” I sighed. We pulled up to the office building and walked in hand-in-hand. Ana checked in at reception, and I found us two seats in the waiting room. She came and sat down next to me, nervously flipping through a magazine, tapping her foot shakily against the floor. I remained tense, waiting to be called in. I had tried to sift through my feelings this past week, but hadn’t come up with much. It was still a bit of a mystery to me of what I wanted the outcome to be. If we found out we were already pregnant, would I be thrilled? Scared? If we found out we weren’t, would I be relieved? Disappointed? I hadn’t been able to come up with an answer. I figured it would end up being like the coin toss effect- as soon as that coin gets flipped in the air, you know whether you want it to be heads or tails. I would know what I wanted when we got into that room. “Anastasia Grey?” A nurse called out Ana’s name, and we rose. Ana was escorted to the bathroom, and I was brought to the sonogram room. I looked up as Ana was brought in. The nurse instructed her to undress and put on a gown. It was strange being back in the office- on one hand, it felt like Teddy had been here for years. I almost couldn’t remember life without him. On the other hand, it felt like just yesterday that Ana and I had made countless visits to this office for check-ups over the nine months of her pregnancy. The nurse shut the door behind her, and I couldn’t help myself from watching my beautiful wife undress. Ana reached her naked body out for the gown, catching my eyes taking her in. “Christian!” she giggled. It felt like it had been too long since I’d last heard my wife’s carefree laugh. “Sorry, baby, I can’t help it. You’re too damn beautiful.” I helped her slink on the paper gown, kissing her shoulder. She hopped up onto the chair, and we returned to more tense versions of ourselves, waiting for the doctor to come in. There was a knock on the door. “Come in!” Ana called. “Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Grey!” Dr. Greene gave us a warm smile. “Back again so soon?” Ana beamed back at her. “Not too soon! Teddy’s already almost 14 months!” “Wow, time flies. So, we’re here for a pregnancy test?” “Yes, we started trying around three months ago. I took one test, and it was positive, and I’ve been feeling a bit more tired than usual.” “Okay, well let’s confirm, then. I think it would probably be too soon to do a sonogram. I’ll do an internal exam and some blood work.” Dr. Greene got her probe ready, asking Ana to slide down the bed and put her feet in the stirrups. I rose to hold onto Ana’s hand, stroking it methodically. The probe was in, and Dr. Greene moved it around as she watched her screen. Ana was biting her lip so hard I thought she might make it bleed. I tried to squeeze her hand reassuringly. “Okay, well, I’m not seeing any babies just yet, guys,” Dr. Greene spoke. “I’ll take a look at the blood work we get back, but it doesn’t look like you’re pregnant yet.” There it was. My coin toss. And then and there, I knew- I was disappointed. “Well, but what about my positive pregnancy test?” As much as Ana had promised me she would prepare herself, I could see she was shocked to hear this news. “I’m sorry about that. It could have been a number of things- a false positive, a faulty test, taking it before a missed period, even a very early loss of pregnancy.” Ana’s lip began to quiver, and I knew she was trying to hold back her tears. Dr. Greene tried to back step. “More likely than not, it was just a false positive, nothing else.” I tried to speak for the two of us. “What should we do now, Doctor?” “Just keep doing what you’re doing. You two had no problems conceiving your first child, and I don’t anticipate any problems this time around. I bet you’ll be back soon enough for some good news.” “Thank you, Dr. Greene.” Ana mumbled a thanks, too. “Call if you need anything!” Greene headed out of the room. I looked at Ana. She was still doing her best to hold everything in. “Come, let’s get you dressed, and then I think they wanted to take some blood.” Big, glossy blue eyes looked up at me for help. “Please, don’t let them draw any blood. I don’t want to confirm what we already know,” my wife whispered shakily. I looked at her, and my heart ached. This was exactly what I didn’t want to happen. “I won’t let them touch you, Ana. Let’s go home.” I helped her dress, and we headed out front. I gave the co-pay and let them know we wouldn’t be doing any blood work today. We got back home, and Ana practically ran up the stairs. “Everything okay, Mr. Grey?” Gail looked up worriedly. “Yes, Gail, thanks. I think she just needed the restroom or something. How’s the baby?” “He’s taking his afternoon nap, sir.” “Great. Maybe Ana went up to check on him.” I knew differently, but we still weren’t telling people we were trying. Good thing, too, because it would have made this day ten times harder if we had our families breathing down our necks, waiting to hear. I went upstairs to my bedroom, but Ana wasn’t inside. I checked our bathroom, but it was empty. I opened the door to the nursery, and found Ana in the rocking chair, Teddy in her arms. As I tiptoed closer, I found my wife silently sobbing as she rocked. She looked up at me and quickly tried to wipe away her tears. “I’m sorry. I promised you I wouldn’t do this.” Her voice quivered as she spoke. “No, baby. You didn’t promise me anything. You can cry.” What had I done to her? I had really fucked this up along the way. I took Teddy from her arms, put him back in his crib, and led her into our bedroom. I shut the door behind us so that Gail wouldn’t overhear. I held Ana on the bed as she cried into my shoulder. “I really thought I was pregnant.” Ana sniffed between each word. “I know, baby. I did, too.” “No, you didn’t! You warned me I would just get my hopes up, and you were right. You’re always right.” “Now, now, we both know that’s not true,” I replied, hoping to get a little smile from my wife. Ana just buried her head into my shoulder, and I felt her tear-stained lashes at my neck. I rubbed circles on her back and rocked her. “This is going to happen for us, baby. It just didn’t happen yet, but it will. We won’t stop trying.” I held my lips to her cheek. When her sobs finally began to subside, I moved her from my lap to the bed, tucking her in under the covers. “Take a little nap, baby girl. It will help you feel better.” She snuggled up to the pillow, and I saw her chest begin to rise and fall rhythmically. “Gail?” I called as quietly as I could from the top of the stairs. Gail came to the bottom of the steps. “Have you already started dinner?” I asked. “I was just about to, Mr. Grey.” “Ana isn’t feeling that well. She just laid down for a nap. I think I’ll just order food later when she wakes up.” “Okay, Mr. Grey. Would you like me to make soup or anything?” “No, that’s alright. Thanks, Gail. I’ll grab Teddy when he wakes up. You can leave a little early today.” “Thank you, Mr. Grey. I hope Mrs. Grey feels better.” “Have a good night, Gail.” I heard Gail shut the front door, and went into the nursery. Teddy was standing in his crib, bouncing happily. His shirt was wet from his mother’s tears. I changed his diaper and wriggled him into a fresh outfit before heading to my bedroom. “Mama!” Teddy squealed as he found his mother in the bed. I lifted him up and he crawled over to her. “Shh, Teddy! Mommy’s sleeping,” I whispered, climbing on after him. Ana popped one eye open, smiling when she saw Ted. “Come to Mommy,” she whispered. “Sorry, we didn’t mean to wake you.” I felt like I was doing everything wrong. Ana lifted the covers and helped Teddy slide in. I slid in, too, sandwiching our son in the middle of us and throwing an arm across my family to pull Ana close. “It’s okay, baby. I love that my two boys are here with me. Is Gail downstairs?” “No, I sent her home so we could have some family time. I figured we could order in tonight.” “Good idea.” “Rest a little while longer. Teddy will be a good boy and rest with Mommy, won’t you, Ted?” “Mama!” Ana smiled and closed her eyes, leaving her lips pressed to Ted’s soft copper hair. I rubbed her back, and we all succumbed to sleep.Couldn't leave you guys hanging :)
