Chapter 23 – Home Again
The day after Christine settled into her apartment in Paris, she’d sent word to invite Madame Giry and Meg to visit her. It seemed like forever since she’d seen them. Had they ever really forgiven her for leaving them so suddenly? Christine was practically shaking when she heard the knock at the door. The young woman Raoul had hired to stay with her came running.
“It’s all right, Lynette. I’ll answer,” she told her.
The girl nodded and smiled before leaving the room.
Christine took a deep breath and opened the door. All of the fears she’d had about their reactions to seeing her again were gone in an instant when she saw the smiles that appeared on both their faces.
“Christine, I missed you so much!” Meg said sweetly and immediately took her hand.
“It’s good to see you, too – both of you,” Christine answered. “Please, come in and make yourselves comfortable.”
“Doesn’t she look beautiful, Mother?” Meg asked as she stepped back to have a better look at her friend’s belly.
“Of course she does. Tell me, how have you been, Christine?” Madame Giry asked as she took a seat on the sofa.
“Other than waddling around like a fat duck, I’ve been fine, just fine,” she answered, sitting down beside her foster mother with Meg on her other side.
However, Madame Giry sensed that something was not as it should be. In spite of her smile and blossoming new figure, Christine didn’t look as happy as the last time she’d seen her. There was a hollowness about her gaze that made her look weary.
“I’m just so glad to have you back with us,” Meg said.
“It’s good to be back. Home just wasn’t home without the two of you.”
“So when are you supposed to have your baby?” Anne asked.
“The doctor said about another month,” she replied, placing her hand on her stomach.
“You and Raoul must be very proud.”
“Oh, we are, Madame Giry, but to be honest, I’m also just a little…”
“Scared?” the older woman asked kindly.
“Yes, I am.”
Madame Giry took Christine’s hand and patted it. “I’m sure that Raoul will have the best doctor taking care of you. And Meg and I will come by to check on you regularly.”
Christine was still afraid, but she did feel somewhat reassured by their presence. Just then, her belly moved.
“Oh, did you see that?” Meg asked.
Christine smiled. “Would you like to feel?”
“Yes, if it’s all right,” she answered.
Christine took her friend’s hand and placed it on her side where she’d just felt the movement. Just then, the baby kicked again.
“Does it hurt?”
