All I want to say is...I'm liking writing this. :) I hope you all are enjoying it as much as I am.
All I could feel was fire. I was in a sea of it, drowning; but I had to hang on. For Jasper, I had to survive.
The waves of liquid fire burned from my toes to my fingertips to my nose. I kept my eyes closed, afraid of what I might see, trying not to scream in agony because of who it could hurt. And still, I thought of Jasper.
The waves began to cool in my extremities, but the fire burned hotter in my chest. It seemed to be burning my heart, trying to stop its beating. Indeed, my heart was slowing.
I don’t know what amount of time passed, but finally it was over. The fire had centered in my heart and stopped it cold, yet I was…alive…in some fantastical way.
I opened my eyes. Everything was different, more colorful, more defined. I didn’t recognize the room I was in at first, but I realized it was the Cullens’ living room.
“Jasper!” I exclaimed, jumping up so quickly I should have been dizzy.
“Calm down, Whitaker,” a soft voice said. Carlisle.
“I am calm. Where’s Jasper?”
“In his room.”
“Is he okay?”
“Well…” I was at Jasper’s door in a flash. I had to pause to realize just how quickly I had arrived. A second, at most. Slowing myself, I opened the door.
Jasper was lying on the bed with his eyes closed. His wounds had barely healed, though the smaller ones were gone.
I felt Carlisle appear behind me.
“How long did the change take?” I questioned.
“Three days,” he replied.
“And he hasn’t healed?”
“No. And he seems to be…unconscious.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
“Could it be because of the wolves?”
“Maybe. Or he might not want to heal. He may be punishing himself by not stopping his own pain.”
“Because he bit me?”
“Possibly. Or he thinks you hate him. Or he believes he killed you.” I stepped towards the bed at a human pace. “Be careful. You’re strong, as a newborn.”
“I will be.” I held Jasper’s hand gently. His skin no longer felt cold against mine; it was…warm. “Jasper? I’m here. It’s Whitaker.” His fingers flexed around my hand in a tight grip.
“Lies,” he growled. “My Whitaker isn’t a vampire.” I heard Carlisle gasp.
“He hasn’t spoken before now,” he breathed, though I still heard him.
“Jasper,” I admonished. “Why would I say I’m someone I’m not?” He shook his head and said nothing. His hand released mine and I knew he was unconscious again.
Weeks passed. Edward brought mine and Jasper’s work home. I did both so Jasper wouldn’t fall behind. Since we only had one or two classes together, it was easy to make it look like he had done it.
My eyes were still in the process of changing from scarlet to gold, so they looked almost bronze or copper. I had been taken on plenty of hunts, but I still couldn’t be around humans for long. That’s weird… Considering everyone else a ‘human’ when I used to be… it feels strange.
I sat with Jasper all day, every day, only leaving to go on a hunting trip. There was little change in his demeanor, though the gashes slowly healed.
Christmas came and went with no change.
New Year’s Eve arrived and I was once again by Jasper’s side. His wounds had pretty much healed, but he still seemed to be unconscious. I had brought him to my house after Carlisle agreed that it should be fine.
I held his hand tighter than I had before and I lay at his side. I felt desperate and in despair, but I still loved him; I couldn’t leave.
A tearless, dry sob wracked my chest.
“Jasper, please get up. I need you,” I sobbed. I sound pathetic… Do I care? Not if it gets through. I felt movement and then Jasper was standing across the room. “Jasper!” He ran to the living room.
“Who are you?” he retorted when I followed. The wide smile fell from my face.
“I’m Whitaker.”
He snorted. “No, you’re not.”
“Why do you say that?”
“He’s not a vampire.”
“I would be if I got bitten.”
He shook his head. “No one would—”
“Look at me, Jasper. Look closely.”
He met my gaze.
“Look past my red-gold eyes and my now pale skin. It’s still me.”
His eyes widened and he looked down, ashamed of his actions.
“What am I doing here?” he asked, still surprised it was actually me. I knew I looked different, but I didn’t think I was that different.
“You’ve come to live with me,” I replied simply. His golden eyes widened again.
“Why would I do something like that?”
“…Because I love you.”
“I’m a monster. I hurt you. How could you love me?”
“You’ve had an injury. You’re not yourself. Come lie down.” He backed away slowly, intent on escaping, but I was by his side in an instant.
“What happened?”
“To you or to me?” His golden gaze left my own, his golden hair falling to hide it.
“Both,” he murmured.
“Well, you were in an accident. You crossed the treaty line, and one of the more temperamental wolves got you.”
“Which one?”
“Paul.”
“What happened to you?”
“I followed you and got in the middle of the fight.”
“But what happened?”
“You bit me while I was trying to save you. My blood seemed to help, so I didn’t mind.”
“So…I did this to you? I condemned you to this life?”
“You didn’t condemn me. I love you, Jasper.”
“Don’t say that,” he growled.
“Why?”
“I don’t deserve love.”
“That way of thinking is exactly why you need it.”
“Everyone I love leaves me. Why would you be any different?”
“Because I am, and I’m not going anywhere.”
“I don’t believe you.”
I shrugged in feigned indifference, even though he could feel my emotions anyway. “You don’t have to believe me. Just go lie down.”
“I don’t need rest.”
“After that injury, you do. I don’t care what you think. Go lay down. Now.” There was a hint of threat in my voice. He frowned, but complied.
“Why do you say I didn’t condemn you?” he asked from the bed.
“As long as you’re here, I’ll be fine.” I could practically feel his anger and disbelief at my words, but I didn’t let it bother me.
He would see. Oh, yes, he would see, because I was going to show him.
Hmm...And how will Whitaker show him? Any ideas?
Gaps of Misery--Haven't you heard? I'm psychic! -lol- But, yeah, I kinda noticed. :) I'm glad you liked the chapter.
Song of Time--Seriously? You didn't like Whitaker? :( That makes me a little sad... But it's good that he's growing on you. :)
elvinwitch--I'd say he didn't, but there wasn't much anyone could do to stop the change.
