Teddy, Ana, and I were on the way to my parents’ house for a family dinner. I unbuckled Teddy from his car seat and held his hand as he toddled into the house like a big boy.
“Mi-mi!” he squealed.
“Come here, Ted!” Mia called back to him as he raced into her arms.
I kissed my parents hello and went to sit down by my brother. Ana was yapping away with Kate. I was glad to see her spirits seemed to be up after last month’s disappointing doctor’s visit. At first, Ana wasn’t in the mood to try again, but after about a week we started back up, and we both were much happier for it. She had taken a handful of tests since then, but nothing had happened so far.
“Okay, everyone, let’s sit down. Dinner is ready!” my mom called out to her chatty family.
Ana came to sit near me, and Kate took her seat next to Elliot on the other side. Mia kept Teddy on her lap, giving him little nibbles she broke off from the breadbasket, and my mom and dad sat at either head of the table.
“Before everyone starts eating…” My brother rose from the table, taking Kate with him.
“We have a little announcement!” Kate squealed. Elliot wrapped his arms around his wife, and they both shrieked, “We’re pregnant!”
The entire family erupted in cheers and celebration. Fuck. I looked at my wife next to me, knowing she must be hurting inside, but she was such an amazing friend that she had already popped out of her seat with a big smile to go hug Kate.
“Congratulations, Kate!” Ana gave her a squeeze, and I watched their exchange taking place next to me.
“Now you just need to get pregnant, too!” Kate whispered into Ana’s ear, just loud enough for me to hear.
Ana managed a smile and nod, but my heart crumbled for her. Why wasn’t it happening for us this time?
Everyone managed to sit back down for dinner. The rest of the night was all a buzz of baby talk, questions about Kate’s due date, bets on if they would have a boy or a girl. Mia had put Teddy in his highchair between Ana and I, and we took turns feeding him little cut-up pieces of our dinners. He was such a good eater, which was a huge relief to me- I never wanted my son to feel hunger the way I had felt it when I was his age.
Every so often Ana and I would bump hands as we went to feed Ted, and I would get a glimpse of the pain behind her smile. All I wanted was to be done with this dinner and get my wife home where I could hold her close and tell her everything would be all right.
Dinner ended, and Ana started packing up the diaper bag. I pushed out my chair to get up and say my goodbyes, but Elliot leaned over to me before I stood up.
“Hey, man, can you stay and talk for a little while?”
I looked at my brother. It wasn’t often he asked favors of me. Shit. I knew I needed to stay.
“Of course, for a little while, Elliot.” I leaned over to Ana. “Baby, my brother needs to talk to me for a few minutes. Would it be okay if you took Teddy home? Elliot will drop me off in a little while.”
“Sure, baby.” Ana continued to clean up the high chair, distractedly.
“Ana.” I took my wife’s face in my hands. “I’m sorry, baby. I’ll get home as soon as I can.” We kissed, and I got up to pull Ted out of his chair.
Ana was going to drop Kate off on the way, and I walked them out to the car, getting Teddy buckled in the back. “Goodnight, Ted. Be good for Mommy.” I kissed my little boy, who responded with his sweet little, “Bye-bye!”
“Congratulations, Kate. Happy for you.” I kissed her cheek, and she got in the passenger seat.
“I’ll see you soon, baby.” I hugged Ana. “Be safe.”
I went back in the house. My parents were heading upstairs to bed.
“We’ll only be a few minutes,” Elliot assured them.
“Stay as long as you like, boys. Just turn on the alarm before you leave.”
We went into the family room and sat down.
“What’s up, big brother?”
“I’m scared shitless, man. You gotta help me.”
“Because Kate’s pregnant? You’ll be great!”
“Tell me what I’m in for, Christian. I have no idea what to expect. Do they really have crazy cravings? Is she going to love this kid more than me? Are we ever going to have sex again?”
“Elliot. I’m sure it’s different for everyone. Here’s all I know: you will both love your child more than life itself. Hopefully, you will love each other more because you made him together.”
“Or her! Shit, her…” Elliot groaned.
“Or her. Which will be fine, too. Kate might be more irritable than usual. Kind of like she has her period for nine months or something. She might feel self-conscious about her body changing. You have to strike a balance between telling her she’s beautiful and letting her have her feelings.”
“And sex?”
“Some months are better than others. I quite enjoyed pregnancy sex.”
“That’s kinky, Christian.”
“Maybe a little, brother.” I smiled. “You’re going to be a great dad, Elliot. You’re a great uncle to Teddy.”
“Thanks, man. Can we have more dad-meetings like this before the baby comes?”
“Of course, Elliot. Any time.”
“K.” He got up from the couch, reaching a hand out to me. I rose, and he pulled me in for a hug. This was a rarity. We had both come a long way.
We turned the alarm on and went out to his car.
He dropped me off at home, and I waved goodnight and went in the house. I made my way upstairs. Teddy’s room was quiet so I headed to our bedroom.
Ana was already under the covers, but she was awake.
“Hi, baby.” I quickly undressed to my boxers and slid in next to her, kissing her nose.
“Hi. How’s Elliot?”
“He’s nervous, but I think he’s excited. I tried to give him some tips.”
Ana smiled, but her eyes revealed her sadness.
“How are you doing, baby?” I cradled her head and looked deeply into her eyes, gray to blue.
“I’m fine.”
“Come on, Ana. This can’t be easy for you. Let me be here for you. Talk to me.” I pleaded with my wife to let me in, stroking her cheek with my thumb.
Ana closed her eyes tight, then opened them, staring into mine.
“Kate and I wanted to have our babies together. We were supposed to be pregnant together. We wanted them to be the same age.” Of course, I already knew of this little plan, but Ana didn’t know that.
“That can still happen, baby. It is going to happen. We’re not going to stop trying.”
Ana sighed, discouraged.
“Ana, I bet you a few weeks from now, we’ll be getting some great news.”
“I guess.”
I laid a hand across her stomach under the covers. “We’re going to make another baby, I promise.”
“Christian, don’t.” Ana removed my hand sadly. Fuck, she was really taking this hard. All I wanted was to take her pain away.
I slid out of the covers and off the bed.
“Where are you going?”
“I’m going to make you some tea to cheer you up.”
I went downstairs and prepared her drink, hoping it would comfort her. I felt like I was at a loss, unable to fix this problem I didn’t even know we really had. Was I making promises I couldn’t keep? Had we taken for granted how easy it was for us to conceive Teddy?
I came back to the room and found Ana sitting up in bed cross-legged. I gave her the tea, and she whispered a thank you. I took my seat next to her, wrapping an arm around her.
“Listen to me, Ana. I really believe that we are going to get pregnant. I really do. I think it’s going to happen for us soon. But I want you to know, that if for some reason it’s just the three of us, I will be the happiest man alive every day of my life.”
“I never wanted Teddy to be an only child. I want him to have a little Mia or Elliot like you had! I don’t want him to be alone like I was!” Ana was getting worked up, worried for our little boy.
“Well, if it comes to it, maybe we could adopt.” I was a bit surprised at my own words.
“A little troublemaker like you?” Ana smiled.
“Maybe,” I nodded. It was a thought I’d had long ago, before Ana had gotten pregnant. Maybe even before I had even met Ana. I’d pushed it to the back of my mind when we found out Teddy was on his way. “Yes, a child who could use all the extra love we have to give. But again, as long as I have you and Teddy, I have everything I could ever need and want, and then some.”
Ana snuggled up into my lap, and I squeezed her tight.
“Please believe me, Ana.”
“I believe you, baby. And at least Teddy will have a cousin close in age, I guess.”
“Yes, that’s true. And we’re going to be an aunt and uncle, which will be fun.”
“I’m happy for Kate.” Ana leaned her head against my chest.
“I know you are, baby. You are the best friend a person could have. I know, because you’re my best friend.” I kissed my wife deeply, cradling her close.
“I don’t do that with my other best friends, Mr. Grey.” Ah, my Anastasia was back.
“Well, I’m the best friend you’ll ever have, Mrs. Grey.” I smiled and kissed her neck. “I love you, sweet girl.”
“Love you, best friend.” We slid under the covers and made love before falling asleep in each other’s arms.
