Chapter 24 – The Anticipated Arrival
Christine was out with Lynette taking a walk in the evening when she felt the first sharp pains. She stopped walking and bent over, clutching her belly.
“Madame, are you all right?” asked the girl as she put her arms around her for support.
“I think it’s time,” she answered. “Just give me a minute and we can start heading back home.”
After a little while, the pain subsided, and she was able to stand up and walk again, though Lynette didn’t let go of her. Christine had been having contractions off and on for the past few months, and the doctor had told her that it was normal, but they had never hurt like this before. The two were almost back to the apartment when another pain hit that doubled her over. It was a good thing that they never ventured too far on their walks. Once inside, Lynette saw her safely to her bed.
“You need to send a note to the doctor, one to Madame Giry at the opera house, and another to Raoul,” Christine instructed. “The boy next door will be happy to deliver them for you. I have some money on my dresser for you to pay him.”
Lynette did as she was asked and returned to stay with Christine. The doctor was the first to arrive and then Raoul with Madame Giry. He had been at the Opera Populaire at the time. They met the doctor in the hall just as he was leaving Christine’s room.
“It will be a while yet,” he told them.
“Thank you, doctor,” said Raoul.
He and Anne came in the room quietly.
“I’m so glad you’re here. Raoul, Madame Giry can stay with me. Perhaps you can go and keep the doctor company while Lynette makes you both some tea,” she said just before another pain struck and she tensed.
“Of course,” he said and went over to kiss Christine’s forehead before leaving the room.
“Madame Giry, I’m scared,” she said once they were alone.
“Oh, it will be all right. You’ll see. I’m here with you,” she reassured her as she sat down beside her on the bed.
“Will you promise me something?” Christine asked with worry in her eyes.
“Of course, what is it?”
“If something happens to me…if I die...”
“Don’t talk like that, Christine,” Anne told her, taking her hand.
“Please, let me finish. It’s important. I need you to promise that if anything happens to me that you’ll look after my child.”
“Oh, Christine, I’m sure that Raoul would see that the baby is taken care of if that were to happen, which I don’t believe it will.”
“But he would need help, and I want to know that you would be there.” She sounded like she was pleading now. “Can you promise me that? I want to know that you’d love my child like you loved me.”
“Of course I would be there to help as long as Raoul allowed it,” she replied. “Now please, try to calm down. Don’t worry yourself. You need to save your strength.”
“Thank you, I feel better now.”
Christine’s labor lasted all night. The doctor came in at regular intervals to check on her. The sun was starting to come up when he announced that it wouldn’t be long.
“I can’t take anymore, Madame Giry,” Christine cried. Her pains were coming almost on top of each other now, and she was exhausted and in agony.
“Shhh, it will be over soon, and you’ll have your baby in your arms. Take deep breaths now…” she said, wiping her face with a cool, wet cloth.
“I need you to push when your pains come,” the doctor said.
Christine did as she was told, having felt the irrepressible urge to push anyway. Her screams were easily heard through the whole house, even though she felt she didn’t have the breath left to scream. The pain was just too much. She closed her eyes and pictured Erik’s face, trying to remember how his lips felt against hers and the warmth of his arms around her.
“Just a little bit more, now. I can see the head. Only a few more pushes and your child will be born,” the doctor encouraged her.
Holding on to Madame Giry’s hand, Christine put the last bit of her remaining strength into her efforts, wanting the torment to be over. She screamed as she gave her final push and the baby was delivered.
“You have a girl,” announced the doctor.
“I want to hold her,” she cried breathlessly, finally letting her head rest against the pillow.
“You will, my dear, you will,” Madame Giry said gently. She helped the doctor clean up the baby and wrapped her in a blanket. “She’s beautiful, Christine. Here, see for yourself.”
Christine eagerly reached out for her and she was flooded with relief as she looked down at her daughter. The child couldn’t have been more perfect.
“Have you thought of a name?” Madame Giry asked.
“Yes, I’m going to call her Elaine.”
The baby started to cry and Christine unbuttoned her gown to offer her breast, which her daughter accepted eagerly.
A little while later, after everything was clean and the doctor was satisfied that both mother and child were fine, Raoul was allowed back in the room.
“I’ll be back in a little bit to check on you,” Madame Giry said, and left them alone.
“The doctor tells me that it is a girl,” he began, “Is she well?”
“Yes,” she replied, unable to take her eyes off her beautiful baby.
Raoul came nearer to take a good look at her. The whole time that Christine had been pregnant, he’d wondered whether or not the child would share its father’s deformity, although he was careful not to bring up the subject. It pleased him to see that not only was she normal but absolutely adorable.
“She looks like you,” he said.
Christine only smiled, secretly hoping that she would grow to resemble her father more.
