Chapter Two: The Order of Silk
It was one day during his evening work, Christopher was walking through the kitchen when his shirt caught on a nail and tore his shirt. His whole arm was exposed, revealing the tattoo he had gotten so long ago. The mere memory of Dantina and her trickery upon him made him feel sad, and that he could not give offerings to his Destiny the same as his he did for his Mistress. Before Christopher could take his shirt off to repair it, his Mistress called for him and Christopher went to see what she needed. “Christopher, what has happened to your shirt?” she asked in surprise upon seeing his clothing. “Forgive me ma’am, for I just caught it on a nail and hadn’t the time to replace it before you called,” he answered with a bow. “Well, go and change it and then I will call for you again,” she said. But before Christopher could leave, she noticed the tattoo on his arm. “A moment Christopher, what is that upon your arm, for I recognise the symbol?” she asked. “It is a reminder of the deal I made with my Destiny, Dantina,” Christopher said. He then explained everything that had happened from start to finish. “My poor boy,” his Mistress exclaimed. “Go and change and we shall talk.” So Christopher went off to his quarters and changed his shirt while his Mistress took a book form her shelves and began reading. In truth, his Mistress was a good witch, and she had helped many with their Destinies. Upon Christopher’s return, she sat him down. “Tomorrow you shall go to the mountains for me as usual, but instead of calling my Destiny to accept the offerings to appease her, ask her to present herself to you as your Mistress begs it. If she does not do so, you will need to take more bread with you the next day, and so on until she appears. When she does, ask her how to contact your Destiny. She will not go to the dais in the Mountains, for it is not built for her. Follow her instructions and go forth.” So the next day, Christopher took four loaves of bread as opposed to the usual three and headed into the mountains. At the dais, he laid them out and called out “Destine, Destiny of my lady, please come forth and show yourself to me as my mistress begs.” There was a gust of wind and a cloud of mist and there stood Destine. She was very similar to Dantina, but her hair was black and her dress was of an olive green. “What can I do for you, worker of my lady?” Destine asked. “I seek your help to contact my Destiny, Dantina,” Christopher answered. “Dantina rests in the next mountain under four rocks of onyx. When you find her home, call out to her and demand tribute for your fifty gold coins. Knowing my sister, she will deny knowledge of the coins, but she knows full well she took the gold coins that you left behind. Even if she did not take them immediately, she took them. Pester her until she relents and offers you something.” With that Destine disappeared. Following the words of his mistress and Destine, Christopher set off for the next mountain as quickly as he could. As night began to fall, he found the four stones of onyx and heard Dantina talking to herself. “Dantina, come forth to me, Christopher,” he called. The talking stopped for a moment. “What do you want?” Dantina asked politely but irritably. “I demand tribute for the fifty gold coins,” Christopher called to her. “I know not what you speak of. You have given me nothing but light humour over the years. Be gone Christopher, for I have nothing for you,” she answered. “Speak no lies to me Dantina, for I know of where my gold coins are. Give me tribute worthy of fifty gold pieces.” Christopher called again. “I have nothing for you, for there is nothing to aid you in your Destiny,” Dantina snapped. “I demand you give me tribute worthy of fifty gold pieces,” Christopher yelled. The argument went back and forth for much of the night, Christopher refusing to give up and Dantina growing ever more impatient. Finally she yielded. “Very well Christopher, if it would bring you peace of mind, take this ball of silk, for it will aid you in your Destiny. But do not sell it, no matter how desperate your life may become, for your youth is not quite over. Now do not bother me again lest you bring me offerings.” And with that Dantina fell silent and Christopher left. The following morning, tired and hungry, Christopher returned to his mistress, who looked at the ball of silk. “Fear not Christopher, for despite their ways, Destiny’s do not cheat. The silk will serve you one day.” Being as careful with the silk as he had been his fifty gold coins, Christopher put it away. A few years later, word spread that the king was to marry one of his sons to another man. While this caused much uncertainty amongst the people, it gave Christopher a sense of happiness that at least one man had found peace with his Destiny. Now the man the prince was marrying was a very noble man, and he had asked for the best suit to be made. The finest silks were used and the best weavers and seamstresses were called to make it. But as the due date came near and things were being prepared, the weavers came to the king in dismay, for they had no more silk to use. The king proclaimed that whosoever should bring silk of the right colour to the palace would be rewarded. But no matter how much silk was brought, none of them came close to the colour of the suit. “Christopher,” his mistress called after reading the proclamation. “Your silk is the right colour that the king seeks. Take it to the castle and present it to him and from there, your destiny will unfold anew.” With nothing else to do, Christopher retrieved the silk and took it to the castle. The king, the prince and his groom were happy to have the required silk, and wondered how to pay Christopher for his help. “Take the silk and put it on a scale,” the visor said. “Then give him its weight in gold.” So a set of scales was fetched and the silk placed upon it. Christopher looked up for a moment and saw, without a doubt in his mind, Dantina standing behind the king’s throne, her wheel turning in her hands. Looking around the room, Christopher noticed that no one else was able to see her, and prayed that Dantina had come to keep her promise. As a few gold coins were added to the other end of the scale, everyone waited for the scales to tip, but they did not. The king took a few bushels of gold and added them, but still the scales would not tip. So larger scales were fetched and more gold was added. Soon, more than a thousand gold pieces were on the scale, but it still would not balance out and the silk was heavier. The scales continued to remain unmoving as the whole treasury was placed upon the scale, but it still did not tip. Finally, seeing there was nothing else for it, the king removed his crown, the last gold in the castle, and added it to the scales. Finally, they moved to show the silk weighed the same. “Impossible,” the king cried. “This must be a trick,” the visor muttered. Before Christopher knew what was happening, the king stepped up to him and smiled. “Will you, now holder of my fortunes, marry one of my daughters?” the king asked. “I shall not, for they have no interest to me,” Christopher answered. “Will you marry my son, should he interest you?” The king offered. Christopher looked over at the prince. Prince Kai was an attractive man with fiery red hair and beard. His green eyes were sharp but still let on to something softer and caring. His strong features caught Christopher’s attention and he fell in love. He consented to the marriage and took the former groom’s place. A few days later, the marriage took place with Christopher’s old mistress invited to attend. As the ceremony concluded, Christopher and Kai went into the royal ballroom to begin the dance. Christopher’s mind went back to the days where he and his father would often go out to fancy evenings like this. It brought a tear to Christopher’s eye that his father might never know where he was now, and that he had brought about the repairs to the damage he had initially caused. As the evening went on, Christopher and Kai were interrupted by a lovely woman in a cyan dress with dark hair. Christopher took her in his arms and they began to dance. “You have done well Christopher,” Dantina said at length. “I have nothing more to do with you other than to grant your happiness.” she smiled. “Thank you Dantina. I just have to know one thing. How did you know to take the gold coins, or that I even had them?” “The fairy of the wishing throne and I had a bit of a talk the day you sat in it. She and I worked out your Destiny together. Well, at least until the coins were spent. You didn’t think I was going to follow you forever?” Dantina asked. “I thought you’d haunt me until I was sixty,” Christopher laughed. “Well, you are forty now, so I wouldn’t put too much thought to it. But you showed your respect to me with your tattoo, so I was a little lenient. Now, your husband is waiting for you and a woman named Catherine is about to meet with the same Destiny path as you. Good luck,” she said, and disappeared in a flash of light before Christopher could say another word. Kai came back over to him, and passed him a drink. “You two seemed awful friendly. Who was she?” he asked. “Dantina, my Destiny no more.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
