It was certainly a land full of adventure. A place where normal rules did not apply it seemed. Perhaps it should not have been such a shock that a band of orphaned boys would attack a ship and steal away the only woman aboard. It was unheard of. For normally a band of raiders would also take treasures and other prizes from the ship. The children did not, merely the Captain’s girl.
The same principle also applied to the pirates. Most would never even consider attacking or fighting a child, much less striking a killing blow to an adolescence. As it was, these young boys were not your average youngsters. These boys killed without remorse when the chance was given. To not defend ones self would make one a Victum and spell the death of anyone not prepared to defend themselves against the small unruly children.
Hook knew of all these facts far to well. It had been the thought that plagued his mind the night before when his good common sense was still in his grasp. If she were to get free, the boys could attack her with a murderous intent to kill her. Caitlin’s eyes, educated through an extremely high level of learning and her mind held by the rules of the real world, would see theme as children and perhaps not even see a death blow before it was struck. However, all of these thoughts had been pushed aside this morning.
The Captain came to a stop looking about the small clearing they stood before. “Well my pesky little pixie, it would seem you have been presented yet another chance to point me in the correct direction of your own will, rather then waiting for me to threaten you.” Aurora was to busy dealing with an inner struggle to answer the impatient Captain right away. James looked down at his pocket, “Well! Speak up before hypothermia sets in!” Aurora suddenly had a hope spring into her mind and flew up before the captains eyes.
She began to make signs with her small arms and hands, speaking as quickly as she could get the words to pass through her lips. Hook arched his brow at her words, “I beg your pardon!?” She had made him a proposition but she had been speaking so fast that her words ran together. Aurora told him she would lead him to the lost boys secret hideout, only if he gave her his word that she could stay with him and live aboard the ship in the open rather then in hiding for fear of being discovered.
James narrowed his eyes looking at the presumptuous little fair. He recognized her manner, weather by choice or by nature; she carried with her the mark of a trouble maker. Not to mention she carried the added danger of being female. One female aboard the ship had been interesting enough, where two were concerned might be more of a challenge then he wanted on his hands. Especially when one of them was suffering from an untold amount of jealousy where the Captain was concerned.
“Tell me something small creature. What could you possibly have to bargain with? The location of Pan’s hideout? Honestly you are not needed to find it. We have all the time in the world to search the island. We cannot grow older and we cannot leave. Immortality makes your proposition a bit superfluous.” Aurora knew he was right and thought for a moment before beginning to speak and sign again. She told him that if Caitlin wasn’t found quickly, the lost boys intended to do away with her as soon as they could possibly mange.
Hook just stared at her for a few long moments. She was quite the cleaver little vixen. Jerking on the cord he pulled her close to him, “Why had you not mentioned this before now? You would not be trying to bluff to save yourself and get what you want from me by making wild accusations, would you?” She smirked slightly growing quite bold and crossed her arms over her chest. Hook ran the possibilities around in his mind a few times. “Very well Miss Sun, However . . . .” he began having every intention of laying down a few conditions of his own. “If Caitlin is not found, alive and returned to my ship by nightfall, I’m afraid your fate will be sealed. No amount of chanting will bring you back from where I shall send you.”
Aurora listened to what he had to say, knowing full well that he was not a man who took this sort of agreement lightly. He would hold up his end, either the good or bad no matter what. She stayed there a moment, hovering before his eyes before she took a deep breath nodding her head. Reaching out her hand James held the tip of his hook out to her, and they shook on it. The Captain arched a brow seeing the small fairies face light up with pure happiness. “We have an accord, NOW take us to her immediately!!”
The small creatures wings fluttered quickly and she nodded, turning pointing towards the hidden and obscured entrance to Peter Pan’s secret hide away. Captain Hook’s eyes shifted back towards the fairy, feeling as though he’d just been extremely taken advantage of. They were perhaps 11 feet from the doorway and it was certainly a last minute angle Aurora had played. Shaking his head he decided he would deal with this later. “Smee, take some of the men and circle around to the back. Make sure they cannot escape with her or disappear.” His first mate nodded quickly and yelled for half of the pirates to follow him.
Aurora flew back into Hook’s pocket, eagerly watching all of the commotion waiting to see what would happen. James drew his weapon heading for the small entrance. It was incredibly quiet in the forest, he paused for a moment looking about. It was far to quiet.
The boys had scattered searching everywhere for their escaped hostage. In their quest to find her, they had strayed from their home a little over a mile. The other fact that had escaped their minds was that she was not only a prisoner, but she was taken from the pirates ship and they would certainly be looking for her wanting to take her back. It was the one fact they should not have forgotten about.
Caitlin was pacing faster now in the small hideaway the red headed youngster had helped her escape to. The moments seemed to drag on for decades as she found herself worrying about the small freckle faced boy, along with James, and even more so about being found by the upset and blood thirsty mob of young boys. It was as if one of her most terrifying and dark nightmares had come true. What was she to do?
The pirates back at the hollow beneath the trees had invaded the hide out and searched all about it. Smee returned to the Captain, “Capt’n, there ain’t no boys anywhere to be found. Not one blasted lost boy in the whole place.” Hook frowned, this was indeed odd, for he knew them to place guards when the rest of them were gone. Hook’s eyes shifted back to Smee.
“What of Caitlin, was there any sign or trace of her anywhere?” Smee shook his head, “No Capt’n. Not so much as a shred of lace.” Hook stood there for a moment thinking, “Spread the men out, have them get undercover and out of sight. Someone will return soon, I find it highly unlikely that the entire band of miscreants left Neverland together. Bring me those boys!” He turned to find a place of his own to hide in, “I will have my revenge, if not on Pan certainly on one of his companions!”
Caitlin’s new found friend was packing a bag inside of the hollow, he was so small and quiet it was easy for him to have been passed over in the pirates search. Once it was full he pulled the string on the bag closing it up and making it easier to carry. Turning he made his way to a small entrance only he could fit through and pushed the bag out through the opening first. Then he pulled himself through escaping it with a ‘pop!’. Reaching for the bag he pulled it to him and headed to the path that would lead him back to the woman he’d rescued.
Most of the pirates were paying attention as they were supposed to be doing. They were cold, tired and exceedingly hungry. They had been worked like dogs for the past three days and now they were made to shuffle through the cold, wind and snow to find a bunch of children.
Hook sat in his hiding place keeping a sharp eye. His brow furrowed slightly feeling something fluttering against his chest. He cast his eye to look down into his pocket, “What the devil are you doing?” Hook demanded. Aurora’s head popped out looking up at him as her wings fluttered again, instantly alerting James to what he had felt. “That is incredibly annoying. Cease!” Aurora’s wings stopped fluttering as she nodded submissively looking up at him with a small smile on her lips.
James sighed, “You should have rejoined your own kind when we returned to Neverland. Not stayed aboard my ship sneaking about in the dark hours of the night. Only the Lord knows how Caitlin would have reacted if she had seen you flying about the Cabin whilst she slept.” Looking down into his pocket he took the opportunity to explain a few things to her, “Caitlin is now the mistress of my ship, and she is my wife. I expect you to keep that in mind just as the crew is to remember that fact. She is to be treated with respect, and any requests she has are to be fulfilled without question.” Aurora sighed thinking this woman of his was incredibly spoiled. Her eyes shifted back up towards him as he continued, “If you truly desire to stay aboard my ship you will be treated like any other crew member. No special privileges are going to be given you, also . . .”
Hook stopped seeing movement among the snowdrifts. Silencing his words, he leaned forward watching with baited breath. The small red headed boys head popped up looking about making sure he wasn’t being followed before heaving a bag over his shoulder and starting off down a path. Hook stood and made his way from his hiding place moving to where the boy had ran from. He studied the foot prints made by the small ones so he could recognize them, “SMEE!” He called out to his first mate his eyes still in the direction the little one had taken off in.
Meanwhile, the boys gathered out of breath getting a bit tired and cold themselves. “Even if she did get that far, she would have frozen to death by now, lets go home!” Several of the boys shouted in agreement with this idea. Even the ones that Aurora had cast her spell over where exhausted from running about in the snow for so long.
“We can find her later! Come on lets go back!” They all nodded and turned wanting to go back to eat and get warm. Although there were times they acted as adults in their battles and behaviors, they were still very much children. One paused a moment looking around, “HEY!” he called out to the rest of the group that stopped and looked at them. “Where’s Red?” They all looked about at each other, “Has anyone seen Red?” They all shook their heads.
“He’s little, he probley went back to the hide out and went to sleep.”
“Well we’d better go back and make sure, we can’t leave him out here to freeze to death. Peter would never forgive us!” Picking up their things they started on their way once again.
Caitlin sat back down on the pallet giving a frustrated sigh. She was about ready just to leave the cave on her own and try to find her way home. It was growing colder by the moment that even with a blanket wrapped about her tightly her teeth where chattering uncontrollably. With nothing else to do but wait, Caitlin’s mind began to roam. “I wonder if James will ever want children.” She whispered out loud to herself. It seemed like the thought had come out of nowhere. Perhaps the youngsters she had been surrounded with lately had prompted it. It wasn’t something they had talked over yet, but what other reason was there for getting married if not children? There was just so much about their marital situation that was confusing.
Just then, the bush the little boy had used to cover the inner entrance of the hideaway began to move and rattle jerking Caitlin from her train of thoughts. She immediately stood wrapping the blanket tighter about her waiting to see who or what would enter. It didn’t push away immediately as she expected it to do. It just rattled in place for a few moments, shoving Caitlin’s heart up into her throat as she watched. Her imagination ran wild with all the different things that were trying to claw it’s way in from the outside. Finally a small white rabbit pushed it’s way through into the cave, hopping over to a corner that was packed with leafs laying down.
Caitlin just stood there her eyes wide at the small creature. “You are losing your mind Caitlin.” She said out loud to herself with a sigh. Moving a little closer she studied the Rabbit. He had large pink eyes and soft white fur, and pink ears. Something about it’s presence calmed her a bit, as it had been sometime since she’d seen an animal of this nature. It sensed it was being looked at and turned towards Caitlin, sitting up on it’s back haunches sniffing the air about him and giving her a once over as well. Deciding she wasn’t any sort of a threat, it went back to eating a green leaf it had scavenged for its dinner. “If anyone else comes in you should probley run for your life little one. I get the feeling they wouldn’t see a pet when they look at you, they’d see supper.”
Standing up she moved back to the pallet sitting down pulling the blankets back over her. Settling down to try and get warm again, listening to the ‘crunch crunch crunch’ of her new companion in the corner. Closing her eyes she took a deep breath before letting it out again trying to relax. All she was able to do was wait, she might as well rest while she could.
The little red-headed boy was making his way back to the secret hiding place keeping his ears open and his eyes sharp trying to make sure he didn’t run into any of his fellow lost boys. If they would look into his sack they would immediately want to know where he was headed with the things he’d taken. He was small, and he was young but he was smart. When he was certain he was home free, he began to run for the cave wanting to get back to the one he’d saved wanting to see her again. Pulling the bush away he slipped through the tunnel into the room, pulling the bag behind him. Once he stood he brushed himself off looking around, Caitlin had dozed off under the warmth of the blankets. Reaching for the bag he picked it up and walked to Caitlin sitting down next to her.
Although the little boy had been careful and sharp to hide from the lost boys, there was no way to know that the pirates had been following him quietly hidden from view. Upon seeing him disappear through the wall of shrubbery, Hook ordered the men that had come with him to circle around to guard the paths about this place. Smee quickly made his way to the Captain, breathing hard after running all the way from his post. “Capt’n . . . those bloody lost boys where all over the island. We heard the little brats talkin’ about how she escaped them, not being able to find her. . . .and that one of their own was missin as well. Some . . . . child called ‘red’, or somethin’ like that.” Hook’s eyes narrowed before moving back to the wall of shrubbery. The boy that had led them here had bright red hair and pale skin. No doubt his nickname would have to do with the most attention grabbing part of the child.
Hook turned to Smee, “Trap them in the hollow. I shall teach all of Neverland what happens to those who steal from me.” Smee nodded still trying to catch his breath. “NOW!!” James shouted at his first mate who wasn’t moving fast enough to suit his liking. Smee turned rolling his eyes, sure today would be the death of him running through the cold snow more then once.
Hook turned back towards their target, but his brow furrowed upon hearing a faint snoring sound emanating from his pocket. Aurora certainly seemed quite comfortable and at home while every other person of the pirate crew was freezing clear through to the bone. Reaching up he flicked his pocket resulting in a loud squeak replacing the snore. Aurora quickly flew from James pocket, once again rubbing her small behind. “I have a mission for you. This would be a chance to prove yourself to me and earn your warm and cozy accommodations you’ve throughout this day.” Aurora reached up rubbing her eyes and stretching waiting for his order. “There is an entrance obscured by that wall of frozen shrubbery near the large mass of boulders. Fly in there, then returned to me to report what you see.” Aurora turned looking towards the place he’d spoken of.
The wheels where turning in her small mind, wondering if she really wanted to help him find the over grown china doll. Hook watched her closely reading the look on her face, his eyes narrowed at this. He jerked the cord attached to her small makeshift collar, making her face him again. “Oh and Miss Sun, one more thing that you would do well to remember.” Aurora listened to him closely, “If you fail to deliver accurate and true information to me, you will be severely punished, as any other member of my crew would be for reporting false information.” Her little wings flitted as she nodded, letting him know she understood. Hook reached up removing the collar from her neck releasing her to do her task.
Once she disappeared into the tunnel, Hook looked to the smallest member of his crew. The disgusting little man nodded and headed for the opening as well. James was testing out several theories with Aurora. If she continued to lie to him where Caitlin was concerned, it would explain how strange things continued to happen to his wife. Fairy magic was a powerful thing. Their dust, when one sprinkles themselves with it, can cause one to fly with whatever thoughts make them the happiest. He’d seen them also use magic to heal someone on the edge of death, to shape dreams on a sleeping person, and even make riches appear out of thin air. They were a mysterious creature, but crafty and cleaver. Normally, their purposes where meant for a good or playful nature. But most fairies where nothing like Aurora. Hook recognized the difference from her mere appearance and knew there was some strange force at work.
Once inside, Aurora landed on the ground and walked the rest of the way on foot. She did not want her glow to call attention to her small form and alert whoever was hidden away to her presence. She tiptoed quietly all the way inside, and darted behind a rock when she heard a noise coming from a dark corner of the rock room. After a moment, she leaned up peering over the rock trying to see what she was sent to see.
The small boy took a few things out of his sack, before reaching up and tugging on Caitlin’s blouse. Cat jumped suddenly, not having realized she’d dozed off. When her eyes cleared and adjusted to the darkness, she saw her young rescuer had returned unharmed. Closing her eyes she breathed a deep sigh of relief. The boy took out some food and put it into her hands. Then reached into the bag again taking out a container that held water, putting it where she could reach it as well.
Caitlin was starved. She had not eaten since morning of the day before, and her stomach complained loudly of it’s being neglected. Closing her eyes she smelled the food before hungrily taking a bite. Chewing it up and swallowing quickly, before taking another bite. The boy watched her eat curiously, never quite seeing anyone eat the way she did. After eating enough to calm her stomach, Caitlin opened her eyes looking at her companion. She suddenly felt very rude and broke a piece of the food off handing it to him. He grinned and accepted it taking a bite. He wasn’t hungry though it seemed, but he would eat with her anyway. Caitlin smiled gently, before taking another bite.
Aurora watched for a while before heading back to the tunnel. Once safely out of sight she flitted her wings and zipped out of the cave heading back to her Captain and his warm pocket.
Hook watched the purple glow as it flew to him and flitted next to his ear as she spoke of what she saw, completely unaware that he had already been told what the cave held. Luckily, Aurora saw no opportunity for a story that would keep him from finding his wife and told him the truth about what she saw. This shot down James theory, however right he had been. “Very good Miss Sun. You have done your job quite well.” Putting the collar back on her he shoved her into his pocket, keeping her there until their work was completely, not trusting her one bit.
James walked up to the entrance kicking the boulder aside opening the tunnel up wider. “CAITLIN!!” He shouted into the rock. Both the boy and Caitlin jumped as his loud voice rang echoed through the cavern.
“James?” She questioned a moment, before picking up the boy and putting him aside. Cat crawled on her hands and knees to the tunnel trying to see out. Was it that boy imitating her husbands voice again as a trick to get her out?
“Yes JAMES, come out of there at once!” Caitlin wasn’t sure about this, her eyes shifted back towards the little one that was still in the cave with her. If it was James, she was almost certain that he would be safe, but if it was Pan he might be punished for being found with her and helping her. “Caitlin? Do you hear me?”
“How do I know you are who you say you are!!” Hook couldn’t believe what he had just heard from her mouth. He kneeled down looking through the dark tunnel unable to see through to her.
“Do you not recognize my voice? Come out of there and see for yourself! We must return to the ship before we all freeze to death!” Caitlin still wasn’t sure of this, she looked at the little one who looked as apprehensive and worried as she did. However she suddenly heard a voice that she was sure was real, it was the first mate Smee talking to the Captain.
“CAPT’N!! The boys escaped! They’re headed this way.” James sighed growing weary of such an incompetent bunch of grown men being outdone by mere children.
“Get the rest of the men on their guard immediately!” Smee nodded and started shouting towards the rest of the crew that had gone with Hook, James leaned down and shouted into the Cave, “Caitlin come out here this instant! There is no time for these silly games!” Cat knew it was James now, and she looked back towards the boy who had risked a lot to help her.
“Stay here and hidden until it’s safe. No one has seen you with me, you should be able to go back once we have gotten away from here.” She whispered to him not wanting to alert anyone to his presence. Swallowing he nodded. Cat turned to crawl out of the tunnel but was stopped feeling a small hand tugging at her again. She paused and turned looking into his sad blue eyes. It was more then obvious that he did not want her to leave, he wanted her to stay here with him. Caitlin suddenly felt as if her heart was being stretched in two directions. She pulled him to her and hugged him tight, “I must go little one, . . . . I have no choice.” Looking into his eyes once more, “You’ll be safe don’t worry.”
He nodded his small jaw quivering. Cat wished she could take him with her, but she didn’t know how James would react to such a proposal. “CAITLIN!!” He roared into the tunnel his patients completely gone. She hugged the little one once more, before turning and crawling out of the tunnel. Hook reached down as soon as he saw her emerge he roughly grasped her and pulled her out of the tunnel to her feet.
Caitlin couldn’t stop herself from rambling off as fast as her tongue could form the words about what had happened, “James, a band of boys was on your ship, they attacked me and carried me to the island and tied me up in their hideout, they had weapons, daggers and swords and were fighting each other without care for their safety . . .” Hook turned her around quickly, putting her cloak over her shoulders and turning her again as she spoke. Caitlin reached up locking the clasp that held it at her neck. Shaking his head he stopped her in mid sentence.
“Yes yes, I am more in tune and acquainted with the entire situation then you could possibly imagine. We shall discuss it later, we have other matters to attend to now.” A large shout came through the trees causing them both to turn in the direction it came from. The young boys where definitely on the warpath. “DAMNATION!” James cursed, taking the extra sword they had brought and handing it to her. “Defend yourself Caitlin, do not be fooled by the appearance of innocents.”
Caitlin blinked a moment not quiet understanding, “What?” Without explaining himself, he turned drawing his own sword. “James?” She asked in a quiet whisper growing worried. “What do you mean? Defend myself against what?” He didn’t answer her and just stood at the ready. Suddenly the clashing of swords and daggers filled the silence as pirates fighting children came into Caitlin’s view. Her eyes went wide at the sight.
