The storm started dying out toward morning, and the sun was shining again by the time Bella opened her eyes. She was very aware of Jacob’s large, hot body still pressed against her, and the sweat dripping down her neck. Jacob was still snoring softly, with a wide grin on his face, so she didn’t want to disturb him despite feeling like she was in a sauna.
Edward, on the other hand, didn’t look nearly so cheerful. “What’s wrong?” Bella asked.
“Nothing,” Edward mumbled.
From the look on his face, something was clearly bothering him. He was no better at lying to her than she was at lying, period. “No, something’s wrong. Is it because of the sleeping arrangements? Because you know I’d rather have you.”
“Really?” was all Edward said, and his tone sounded like he didn’t believe her.
Bella huffed. “You’re impossible.”
“And you talk a lot in your sleep.”
Bella turned bright red. She couldn’t remember her dreams, so she had no idea what she could possibly have said to upset Edward like this. But before she could think about it too much, Edward’s gaze snapped up to the tent door. “Seth’s here.”
Bella nodded. “Could you help me out of this, then? We should probably wake Jake anyway.”
With an evil grin Edward reached over and unzipped the sleeping bag. Jacob rolled over onto the cold floor and woke with a start. “Hey!” he protested. “This isn’t Egypt….”
“No, we’re in a tent in the middle of nowhere.” Bella gave him a funny look. “And it’s morning.”
“Oh, okay,” Jacob said with a yawn. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and sat up. “How much longer?”
“Alice told Sam about an hour or so,” Edward answered. “And Seth is here now.”
“Then I should go,” Jacob said, and he started to crawl out of the tent. Before he got very far Bella caught up to him.
“Wait!” she cried. Jacob turned to face her, ready to try and calm her fears again. “Is there any way I can convince you to stay here with us?”
Jacob chuckled softly. “No. I wouldn’t miss this for anythi—”
Before he could finish speaking Bella wrapped her arms around him and pulled him into a kiss. He was too surprised to react at first, but then he found himself kissing her back. “What was that?” he asked when she pulled back.
The look on Bella’s face suggested she’d surprised herself. “Something I should have done a long time ago, I guess. Jake, look, I know you’re taken now, but I want you to know that I love you. I just…” She glanced back at the tent, where Edward was waiting and probably listening.
“I love you, too, Bells. I always have. And I understand completely.”
“Come back to me,” she pleaded. “I don’t think I could stand losing a best friend.”
“I’ll be here as long as you and Liam need me,” Jacob assured her before turning and heading into the woods.
The Cullen family waited patiently in the clearing while the wolves hid in the woods. A thin fog rolling through the trees created the perfect scene. “They’ve caught the scent,” Alice informed the others.
Liam watched the tree line intently with a wild look in his eyes. His head cocked to the side when the pack of newborns emerged. “That’s it?” He sighed in disappointment. “And here I thought I was actually going to be given a challenge.”
Carlisle chuckled and put a hand on his brother’s shoulder. “Just save some for the rest us.”
“No promises,” Liam mumbled, and he charged. The rest of the Cullens followed and met their attackers head-on. Jasper and Liam’s plan worked like a charm. A few of the newborns stopped to sniff the air, distracted by the scent of all the dried blood. Emmett and Liam grabbed one at the same time and ripped him in half.
Meanwhile, Sam and the wolves stalked a smaller group that were supposed to sneak around and ambush the Cullens. The newborns never noticed the pack until it was too late. They too, were chased out into the clearing, and the wolves spread out to help their new allies.
Liam let out a ferocious roar as he snatched two newborns and smashed their skulls together. It seemed the wolves had listened to everything Jasper had taught them, and the newborns were being slaughtered. Even Carlisle, the incurable pacifist, was in rare form, slashing his way through the mob.
The only thing that bothered Liam was Victoria’s absence. They were pretty sure she was behind this, but Liam couldn’t sense her anywhere in the immediate area. Why go to such trouble and not even at least watch?
And then he knew. His family and the wolves had things well in hand, so he took off up the mountain to hunt a redhead.
Bella sat and listened to Edward tell her, from Seth, everything that was happening. Seth made it very clear he wasn’t happy about being kept out of the fight just because he was the youngest, but Bella was glad he was there.
She tensed when Edward suddenly went quiet. She was afraid her worst fear had come true and someone was badly hurt. But before she could ask him what had happened, Edward snatched her and ran for the cliff wall, putting her behind him and scanning the area.
Suddenly Victoria emerged, her intense gaze fixed on Bella. “You’ll never get her,” Edward growled. Bella looked around for Seth and found him right beside her, his teeth bared in a snarl. “No, he won’t turn on me,” Edward said in answer to her unspoken question. “The enemy of my enemy is my ally, and you’re our common enemy.”
Bella silently pleaded with Seth to run away, but he couldn’t hear her. It was just Seth and Edward against Victoria and whoever she’d brought with her. Everyone else was occupied, and Victoria looked rather smug considering she was outnumbered two to one. She had to have something up her sleeve.
Her smugness disappeared though, when she turned to look behind her and found no one there. “Looking for this?” Liam laughed as he stepped out of the trees holding a blond boy tightly in his grip. “Gee, with him being your new mate and all, I would have thought you’d notice when he wasn’t behind you anymore.” Victoria screamed in fury and slowly began backing away.
“Victoria!” the boy cried out. “Please, help me!”
“Poor, stupid Riley,” Liam said in a condescending tone. “You just can’t win today, can you? Because, you see, even if she wasn’t just using you to avenge her mate James, she’s too much of a chicken shit to help you. Why else do you think she needed a whole army to feed to the wolves? Oh, yes, she knew about them.”
“Don’t listen to them, Riley,” Victoria said in a soft, sweet tone. “Break free and help me kill them.”
Riley just whimpered in response. Liam shifted his position to reveal that Riley was already missing an arm and a large chunk out of his side. “Yeah, I don’t think that’s happening,” Liam smirked. “He put up quite a fight, though.”
Victoria knew all was lost, and she turned and fled. Edward immediately gave chase. Liam finished off Riley by ripping off his head, then turned to Seth. “Stay here and guard her,” he ordered before taking off after Victoria himself.
She didn’t get away this time. It took mere seconds for Edward and Liam to trap her between them and move in for the kill. Liam stunned her and watched as Edward violently tore her apart. It was done. The threat was over. They gathered up the pieces and headed back to the campsite to burn what was left of Victoria and Riley.
No one spoke as they watched the thick black smoke rise. “It will soon be over,” Edward assured Bella.
“Yeah,” Liam laughed. “There weren’t many still standing when I left.” Suddenly he tensed and his eyes turned toward the direction of the clearing. “Jacob…” he whispered, and was gone in a flash.
They thought the newborns had been dealt with, but they were wrong. While the Cullens were gathering up pieces to throw into the fire, one who had been hiding leapt out at Alice. She dodged the attack effortlessly, but before anyone else could react Leah jumped into the fight. She wasn’t experienced enough to take on a newborn on her own however, and quickly found herself on the losing end of the fight.
Jacob ran to her rescue, shoving her out of the way. It took only that split second of distraction for the newborn to get his arms around the red wolf. A sickening crunch echoed through the clearing. Jasper and Carlisle sprang into action at the same moment and were able to pry the attacker off Jacob before they killed it. “Someone get my bag,” Carlisle ordered as he knelt down to examine Jacob.
Esme returned seconds later with the medical bag Carlisle had stashed nearby just in case. Jacob whimpered at every touch, but he stayed still. “Looks like his whole right side was crushed,” Carlisle said as he pulled out bandages and tape.
Seconds later a blur flew across the clearing and dirt sprayed into the air as Liam skidded to a halt. He grabbed onto a tree to steady himself before rushing over to Jacob’s side. “He’ll be all right,” Carlisle assured him. Jared and Quil helped Carlisle set the bones in place and bandage Jacob up. “That’s the best I can do since I’m not a vet. Sam, try and get him to change back, and I’ll check on him later.”
“The Volturi are coming,” Alice warned.
Carlisle turned to Liam. “Go with Jacob and tend to him.” He tossed his bag and Liam caught it. Then Liam followed the pack back to La Push.”
Edward and Bella arrived right after the others were out of sight. “Jacob was hurt, but he’ll be fine,” Carlisle explained to her. “Right now we have more important things to worry about.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Jane appeared through the pall of smoke. The shadows of a few other Volturi could be seen behind her. She eyed the scene with both disappointment and awe. “We had come to intervene, but it looks like you’ve already beaten us to it,” she said calmly.
Edward gently shoved Bella behind him. “Yes, such a shame. If only you had gotten here half an hour earlier. You could have helped us then.”
Jane glared at him. “Yes, it’s such a shame. Though I must say I’m quite impressed. I’ve never seen a clan take on such an attack and come through it unscathed before.”
“And you’ve never seen my brother fight before,” Carlisle said with a fake smile.
“No, I’ve never had that pleasure. But why isn’t he still here?”
“He had other matters that needed attending to,” Carlisle answered. “But since you are no longer needed here, be sure to give both our regards to Aro and Marcus.”
“I will, but I’m sure you’ll be seeing them again soon.” Her gaze fell upon Bella for a brief moment before she turned and left.
