I awoke to blaring music and raised my head slowly. I threw my legs over the bed and stood and listened to the song for a moment before I recognized it. It was “When you were young,” by The Killers.
I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth and washed my face. I ran a brush through my curls and then had to dampen them to bring them back from frizz land. I smelled bacon cooking as I went down the stairs. The song changed to another one by them “Can you read my mind” and I realized that it was my IPOD in the stationing dock on the little table that held the living room Bose. Maybe they were trying to please me? Alcide was making a huge omelet when I came into the kitchen. He turned with a small smile and went over to the cupboard and poured some coffee into a mug and handed it to me. “Do you take cream or sugar? He looked so politely helpful that I laughed under my breath. “No, black,” I said sitting at the kitchen table. Outside the barred kitchen windows the sky was cerulean, an aching blue, a blue so distant because I was going to be a slave for the rest of my life until they murdered me or my new owner did. “Eric said were going to Disney Land today,” Alcide turned after taking the gargantuan omelet out of the pan. He cut it in half and put one half on a plate before me. My mouth watered at the prospect. I may have despised him but my body loved his cooking. “Disney World actually and we’re going this afternoon, Eric has court this morning,” he corrected sitting across from me. So that’s why I’d awoken alone. “Why are we going?” Alcide chewed a bite of his half and wiped his mouth after swallowing. “Uh because Disney World is a magical place and we want to share it with you,” he said with a little smile while he rolled his eyes playfully. “Are we flying?” Alcide shook his head. “No, driving.” I knew they wouldn’t risk having me at an airport. I took my first bite and groaned when I tasted it. It was sharp cheddar with sausage and cheese with bits of bacon. It was delicious and you know how most people can’t make an omelet without browning the bottom? Well his was perfectly yellow all over. “I expect you to eat all of that,” Alcide said sternly. Another one of my songs came on. “Look at the stars how they shine for you and everything you do,” Alcide got a strange expression as he ate listening to it. “Most of the songs on your IPOD blow,” he told me with a little grin. I frowned and took another bite. I had no comment or comeback because really I had never heard them play a single song I didn’t like. “I did like that one shit kicker song “Strawberry Fields,” he admitted looking a tiny bit ashamed. I finished the omelet and carried my plate to the sink to wash it. “You don’t have to do that, ever,” he said softly from behind me. Shrugging I turned to him with the rag in hand. “It’s how I was raised.” “Well it’s time to put away childish things as Ozzy said once,” he paused and looked as if he wanted to touch me. “For as long as you are ours we will see to your every whim, your every need.” His face was perfectly serious. My favorite song on my IPOD started playing and he froze and looked wounded. We stood listening to it for a minute. “I’m so lonely I wish I was the moon tonight, God bless me I’m a free man with no free place to go. Collared tight and no pills for what I fear,” A Neko Case sang. “Then why don’t you let me go?” my voice was huskier than usual and I peered up at him hopefully. He forced himself to smirk. “Because then we would go to prison dumb shit.” Just as the song was ending he wandered over to the docking station and looked at the screen. “That is the saddest song I’ve ever heard,” he said quietly. He turned to me “You know I’m playing all your songs to get to know you better,” he nearly whispered as I came into the living room. “I want Anton to come with us,” I said firmly ignoring his statement and the vulnerable expression he’d had when he’d uttered it. Alcide scowled and looked jealous. “No.” “Yes,” I answered. His hands went to his curls and tousled them till one trailed near his eyes. “Why?” “I like him,” I said simply. He reached into his jeans and pulled his phone out. “It’s me, get over here, we’re going to Disney World,” he listened to Anton and then added, “Yeah Sookie is coming with us, alright see ya.” He pushed a button and hung up. “Are you in pain?” I nodded and he handed me the vial that Miguel had given me which I’d thought had been under my pillow. I went to the coffee table and laid out a line using Eric’s straight razor to make it. “My father was a heroin addict,” Alcide said softly. “Be careful, it eats you alive.” I looked up at him and gazed deep into his gorgeous eyes. He looked like he was fighting his memories so much. “I need a straw,” I said instead of saying something stupid like I was sorry for him, because I wasn’t for the most part and if I’d had a gun I would have blown his perfect head right the fuck off. He crouched down and opened a drawer that was situated on the bottom of the coffee table and brought out the shorn striped straw and handed it to me. “Thanks,” I muttered bending my head to the white powder. As soon as I did it I felt sick. I ran to the bathroom upstairs and vomited up the omelet. Then I just kept dry heaving. I wondered why I hadn’t been sick last night when I’d first done it. I brushed my teeth again and avoided my reflection but at the last second my eyes met my eyes in my reflection. “Don’t do drugs kids,” then I left that girl there trapped in the mirror. When I came downstairs Alcide was working on the puzzle intently. The doorbell rang and he glanced up with an annoyed expression. “Who is it?” “Thomas and John,” a voice called back. He went to it and opened the door and let them in. Their eyes went to me immediately and one short guy whistled lowly. “Wow she is smoking!” Alcide smirked. “I just started dating her,” he said smugly. “What can I do for you this time?” “The usual, two grams since I’m a little light on cash,” the taller one said. Alcide nodded and took my hand and led me upstairs with him. Of course he wouldn’t take the chance that I would say something to them, something like “Please call the cops, I’m being raped and beaten.” He took me into a room that I’d never seen, an attic and he went up a an antique looking ladder and opened a panel in the vaulted ceiling and I watched as he weighed shards and put them in baggies before sealing them into a soup can. The can was convincing, it looked exactly like a Campbell’s one. “I don’t usually do small time shit like this,” he said almost defensively. “But he’s a friend.” We went back downstairs and he handed them a can. “Go through Simon from now on,” he said before they left. “Why?” “Because I’m not doing small amounts anymore.” The door closed and we were alone. I was so high that I felt sick again and ran to the bathroom knowing there was nothing in my stomach. I was on my knees just feeling acutely how little there was left of me. I finally stood up and went back downstairs. Alcide was finishing the left side of the puzzle. “Why did your guy pick that one?” Alcide looked up surprised at my question. “Because he’s a professor of history, he has a thing for the Civil War.” “Why did you guys stop seeing him?” He looked down at the puzzle and sighed. “Because it was getting complicated,” he paused as he put in a piece. I sat next to him and felt my eyes closing. We came to the end of my songs and I felt relieved because those songs had reminded me of who I used to be, who I could never be again. Someone knocked and Alcide unlocked the three locks and let them in. It was Anton and I gave him a drugged genuine smile. He wore a black cable knit sweater with dress pants and he was carrying an overnight bag. He frowned back at me. “Why does she look so fucked up?” “Miguel gave her some dope last night, she just did some,” Alcide informed him. Anton looked furious. “You know how I feel about that shit,” a dark look encased his face and I could see he was remembering their childhood. Alcide nodded “I feel the same way but she’s in pain from her little adventure.” His cousin said nothing to that and sat next to me. “Hi Sookie,” he smiled sadly over at me. The other man in the room went over to the station and switched out IPOD’s. A sexy heavy metal song came on and I found myself bobbing my head to it. I had never known until my time with them how much different styles of music I enjoyed. “Who is this?” I asked from my fog. “The Def Tones,” Anton replied. I heard a key enter the locks one by one and Eric entered. He looked giddy almost. “You won?” Eric smiled “Yeah he got away with everything and I even got him a settlement for wrongful slander and mental suffering.” It was disgusting that he was out there in the world helping evil people get away with murder and probably rape. I had to admit reluctantly that I had never seen a man rock a suit as well as he did. It was dark gray, nearly black and he wore a black shirt under it with a red tie. He took his tie off and went into the kitchen. He came back holding a bottle of scotch and three tumblers on a tray. He seemed to notice Alcide’s cousin for the first time. “What are you doing here?” his tone wasn’t hostile just curious. “Apparently I’m coming with you to Disney World.” Eric didn’t look nearly as annoyed by this as his boyfriend had when I’d made him invite him. “Cool,” he murmured handing the tumblers all around. I took mine and winced at the taste. My daddy loved scotch but I had never liked it when he’d let me try it. I set mine down and Anton saw my dislike and drank it for me. Eric went into the kitchen and grabbed a kitchen chair and I went cold all over as he turned it and sat backwards to face me. This was his pose he had used the day of my escape. “Sookie there is something that you need to know before we go on vacation.” “I called Miguel last night and arranged something,” he paused and lit a smoke. He hit it and his eyes were so cold through the smoke. “There is now a contract out on your entire family and if you so much as look at anyone as if you’re not with us willingly they will be executed within the hour,” he spoke slowly and quietly, carefully so that I wouldn’t misunderstand him. “Got it?” I just looked at him for a minute and felt dead inside. “Yeah I got it,” I whispered.
