Charlie usually enjoyed spending time with Billy, but on that particular day Billy seemed rather distracted. It unnerved Charlie, and so did all the howling and the eerie roar they’d heard earlier while they were fishing. As soon as they’d heard it Billy had rushed him to the house. It was like Billy knew something he didn’t.
Charlie jumped when the door flew open, and some boys carried in a seriously hurt-looking Jacob. Liam was right behind them, carrying a large black bag. “What happened?” Charlie asked. This was getting too weird.
“Bike accident,” Liam explained. “Some kind of animal ran out in front of him.”
“Why in the hell didn’t you take him to the hospital, then?” Charlie questioned while the boys carried Jacob back to his room.
“I called my brother. He said they’re on their way back, and we should bring Jake here. He’ll be here as soon as he can.”
“That’s probably best,” Billy nodded, looking worried.
Charlie gave Billy a funny look, but sat down and said nothing more. This was all surreal, but he knew Billy would never do anything to endanger his son.
Sam ordered everyone else to stay in the living room while he followed Liam into the bedroom. Jacob was on the bed writhing in pain and cussing like a sailor. “You know what you’re doing, right?” Sam asked.
Liam let out an exasperated sigh while he dug through the bag. “I haven’t practiced medicine since the Civil War.”
“Comforting . . .” Sam mumbled sarcastically and took a seat at the foot of the bed.
“Oh, it gets better,” Liam said as he pulled out various items and set them on the dresser. “Because of his metabolism, neither Carlisle nor I know how much painkiller to give him.” He grabbed Jacob’s good arm and straightened it out. “Sweetheart, I’m going to set up an IV, okay? It’ll make it much easier to give you the painkillers.”
Jacob nodded in understanding. “Did your brother really have so little faith in us?” Sam asked when he saw all the equipment Liam had taken out.
“Oh, no, that’s not it. He just likes being prepared for the worst. I’d say this time it was a good thing.” It only took Liam a few seconds to get the IV established. The he grabbed a syringe and the bottle of morphine.
“You’re pretty good at that,” Sam complimented him.
“Thanks, but finding a vein is pretty easy for someone like me,” Liam said as he filled the syringe with twice the normal dose for someone Jacob’s size and injected it into him. The drug worked quickly and Jacob’s body began to relax. Liam sat beside him and gently took his hand. “Go to sleep,” he said softly.
“You won’t leave me?” Jacob asked, his eyelids drooping.
“A pack of wild dogs couldn’t drag me away,” Liam cracked a smile and leaned down to kiss Jacob’s forehead.
“I love you,” Jacob whispered.
“I love you, too,” Liam answered as he ran his cold fingers through Jacob’s hair.
Carlisle arrived with Edward a few minutes later. He examined the werewolf again and frowned. “He’s healing, but the bones are crooked now. Liam, I’m going to need your help. You break while I reset.”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “You’re serious? You want me to break his bones all over again?”
“Do you know of a better way? I can’t do it myself; he heals too quickly.”
“Fine,” Liam huffed. “Let’s just get this over with quickly.
Sam slipped out and gave everyone an update. The next half-hour was nearly as agonizing for those waiting in the living room, from where they could clearly hear every loud crack and scream of agony from Jacob’s room, as it was for him to experience them. When the cracking had stopped and Jacob’s cries of pain had quieted, Carlisle emerged. “He’s going to be fine,” he assured everyone. “He had quite a few broken bones, but no major internal injuries as far as I can tell. He’s heavily sedated, so he’ll probably be out cold for quite a while.”
“Thank you.” Billy reached out for Carlisle’s hand.
Carlisle shook it and smiled. “You’re quite welcome. I’ll come back every so often to check on him, of course. Liam is staying here, so he’ll let me know if anything changes.”
Carlisle and Edward left. Sam told the pack to go home too, though he pulled Leah aside to give her a stern talking-to. Charlie decided to stay with Billy for a while, though he also left around dinner time so he would be home when Bella returned from her sleepover with Alice.
For the next week Liam only left Jacob’s side to help Billy when he needed something. Only Carlisle could get him to go hunt, and even that took three hours of arguing. Jacob was in and out of consciousness because of the morphine. The only way they could figure out the correct dosage was through trial and error.
When Bella heard Jacob was finally awake she headed straight to La Push to visit him. She arrived just as Jacob was finishing lunch. “Hey there.” Jacob gave her a dopey smile. “I was wondering when you’d come.”
Bella sat on the foot of the bed. “I would have come sooner, but I had to keep up pretenses with Charlie. And you weren’t awake, anyway. Please tell me you’re not in pain.”
“Nope.” Jacob laughed. “The Doc and the cute blond keep me good and doped. Being stuck in this bed kinda sucks, though. Carlisle said I can’t even phase until he clears me. Can you believe that? He’s afraid my bones will go all crooked again.”
Bella shook her head. “You don’t want them re-broken again, do you?”
“No . . . .” Jacob shivered at the thought.
Bella scooted a little closer and grabbed his good hand. “I’m sorry you got hurt.” Bella stared at her lap.
“Why are you apologizing?”
“Because this is all my fault.”
Jacob pulled her closer so she was lying next to him. “Stop that. We wanted to fight. I really wish you’d quit blaming yourself.”
“And I really wish you and Edward would let me feel guilty.”
Jacob reached to brush a stray hair out of her face. “Now, why would we do that?”
“I don’t know, I just . . . .” She was so frustrated she didn’t know what to say. “I nearly had a heart attack when I found out you were hurt.”
“Hey, I promised you I’d come back, didn’t I? Since when have I ever broken a promise to you?”
“You did when you said you’d wait for me.”
Jacob was quiet for several moments. “Bells, I didn’t have much choice. Besides, you made it pretty clear you didn’t want me.”
Bella frowned and wiped away a tear. “But I do, that’s the problem. I just didn’t realize it until I saw you so happy with Liam. I was even in denial about being jealous, right up until I kissed you.”
“Yeah, I liked that. Too bad your realization came a little too late.”
Bella turned to face him. “What do you mean a little too late?”
“Well, I’m with Liam, and you’re with Edward. Though I think if vampires didn’t exist, you and I would have eventually gotten together. That’s the way things were going before Edward came back.”
Bella could only nod. “You made the pain go away.”
Jacob gave her a crooked smile. “It’s what I do, Bells. I’m doomed to spend eternity playing a supportive role. But I don’t mind.”
Bella was quiet for a minute. “So, even if I were to change my mind? I mean, I wouldn’t, but . . . .”
Jacob reached out to softly brush her cheek. “I don’t know what to tell you. I’m with who I’m supposed to be with. But if you have doubts . . . .”
“No!” Bella quickly protested. “A girl just likes to know she has options. But I guess I don’t anymore.”
“You always have options, just not with me. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t you start,” Bella said as she turned away from him. She didn’t want him to see the tears that were threatening to spill. “Maybe I should go home.”
“Okay.” Jacob nodded. “Just don’t be a stranger. I can’t say anything anymore lest I become a huge hypocrite.”
Bella kissed Jacob’s forehead and headed out to her truck, mumbling a goodbye to Billy and Liam on her way past. Edward was waiting for her and she fell into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably. He held her close and looked to Liam, who had come out on the porch, for an explanation. “She’s in mourning for what could have been,” Liam explained telepathically. “So don’t worry. She doesn’t regret her decision; she’s just missing what she can no longer have.”
Edward nodded and helped her into the passenger side of the truck since Bella was clearly in no shape to drive. Liam returned to Jacob’s side. “Are you okay?” he asked, taking the space Bella had occupied earlier.
“I think so,” Jacob answered. “Things would have been so much simpler if it could have been Bella for me, but it’s always been you. I’ve been having these dreams lately. I’m always a different person in a different time, and I’m with someone I know is you. I can tell because of the eyes. I’ve never met anyone else with that spark. The night before the fight; you were an Egyptian pharaoh, and I was your slave. We were together on this little patio thing on the bank of the Nile. I didn’t feel like a slave. You made me feel loved and cherished.”
“I hope I still do.”
“Of course you do. It was just really cruel of the fates to put Bella and me together first. It caused us both so much pain.”
Liam gently rubbed the back of Jacob’s hand. “You were there for her when she needed someone to pick up the pieces. And now, I’m here to do the same for you.”
