A/N: We will be a fly on the wall (a wolf in the woods actually!) at Amy’s for the first half of this chapter. FYI, chapters like this will not be a regular occurrence.
Seth
As we ran, Xandra was thinking about Rachel’s phone call to the house, the night Amy was still in the hospital. It went through her head a lot. Xandra was sitting in the hallway at the time, so in her memory I saw her staring at the wall, and listening to the whole conversation.
First things first, Rachel gave Jake and Nessie Amy’s address.
"Put me on speaker,” Rachel said after that. “I know you can both hear me, but I can’t hear both of you.”
“It’s on,” Nessie told her. “What else did you find out?”
“Well, she’s an Aquarius which is interesting because-”
Jake cut her off.
“Rachel! No, it isn’t. Get to the point,” he urged her.
“How bad is it?” Nessie said, a little more gently.
“Okay, okay. It’s pretty bad. I couldn’t write anything down so that I wouldn’t get busted, I just kinda scanned her records. The program I was in goes back five years. You can see exactly when it started, it was around four years ago. That first year, there was nothing. Then, boom! She’s had a broken jaw, that’s pretty common. A lot of facial contusions, and a couple neck contusions too."
“Did you just say neck contusions? He chokes her?” Nessie said.
“It seems that way,” Rachel answered.
“Holy crap,” Jake muttered.
“She’s had so many concussions, and that’s a big deal. That’s the thing that could really cause some lasting damage for her. A strange one that stuck out was three broken metatarsals at once.”
“What the Hell are those?” Jake asked.
“The bones on the tops of your feet,” Rachel answered.
“Oh. Sometimes I forget that you actually know a lot,” Jake said.
“What can I say? I’m a handy gal to keep around.
I think being at Amy’s was hardest on Xandra. Being a woman, and also being Anthony’s sister.
I’ll be just fine, she assured me. If we do have to bust in there, I’d looooooove to be the one to do it. Please let him try that shit while I’m there!
The basic instructions were, if he is hurting her, stop him. We hadn’t been told to kill him, but we hadn’t been told not to either. That was a fact that a few of us hadn’t missed.
Randy hadn’t laid a hand on her since we’d been watching, but he didn’t need to in order to terrorize her. We watched as he called Amy every name in the book. She had to do what he said, when he said it. Sometimes, it seemed like she was supposed to just know what he wanted, without him even telling her.
We’d gotten a pretty good idea of their routine. Randy worked during the day, but seemed to have a random schedule when it came to his days off.
Daisy went to pre-school in the mornings. Amy drove her, except for when Randy wasn’t working. We weren’t really sure why he bothered at first. On the fourth day, that kinda threw us off. One of us followed along the road as close as we could, the same as we did for Amy. We wanted Daisy to be safe, too. Once they got there, we figured out why he’d been so eager to be the one to take her. He really enjoyed chatting with one of the very attractive teachers, he enjoyed it a little too much. It was no surprise there, that he had the potential to be a cheater, if he wasn’t already.
There was one more weird thing he did that we had a little more trouble figuring out. Every day when he got home from work, or when Amy came back from the store, which seemed to be the only place she was allowed to go besides the school, he’d open the door to her car, and stick his head in. It looked like he was checking the milage. Nessie was the one who suggested he was probably making sure she’d gone where she said she had said, and no where else.
Amy was allowed to check her e-mail once a day, with him looking over her shoulder the whole time. She didn’t get many, but she had to answer to him for each of them. When she got one from an old friend he didn’t know, he made her delete it, then block the person. She got one that was an advertisement for some celebrity’s new fragrance, that pissed him off pretty good. He was positive she must have gotten it because she’d been buying perfume online. He demanded to know who it was that she needed to smell nice for. Apparently, she wasn’t allowed to use the credit card, not for shopping online, and not for anything besides groceries.
They lived in one of the nicer parts of Forks, most of the houses were pretty new. The house had been easy to find that first time, it was the only brick one in that part of the neighborhood. The houses weren’t that close together, and since it was Forks it was surrounded by a lot of trees. I assumed that those two reasons were why they never really bothered to close the curtains, lucky for us. We could usually see what was going on in there. It was spring, so the flowers in the yard were in full bloom. They had everything but the white picket fence.
Xandra, Adam and I took our places in the woods, each on a different side of the house. As long as one of us could see into one of the windows, we could all see as well as they could, in the pack mind. I was relieved that Randy still wasn’t home when we got there. Amy was up to some hard core cleaning, like normal.
How can that place not be clean yet? Adam wondered.
After she’d deemed the kitchen to be spotless, she spent the afternoon playing with Daisy. She seemed like a gentle, and patient mom. Even if the poor kid had gotten stuck with a shitty dad, at least she had a sweet mom. It looked like Amy was trying to get her to talk more, but Daisy was a quiet one.
When the garage door went up, signaling that Randy was home, Daisy dropped what she was doing, and ran to her room.
“Daisy, no!” Amy whispered, running back the hall. “You have to put away your toys!”
Little blondie was already outta there.
We thought Randy had been at work, but maybe not. We could smell the alcohol on him from where we were as he checked the milage on Amy’s car, parked on the side of the driveway.
He wore his reddish brown hair in a kind of military style crew cut, and I figured he was about six feet tall. Amy was tall herself, so he really didn’t have that much height on her, three or four inches I’d guess.
Inside, Amy was rushing to clean up. She wasn’t quite fast enough.
“Hey,” she said casually when Randy walked in, even though she was out of breath. “Where were you?”
“None of your fucking business. Why are you putting away her toys for her?” he demanded.
“She did clean them up, she just didn’t put a few things away in the right spots,” Amy lied. “So I’m straightening them up.”
“Daisy!” he hollered. “Get your ass out here!”
She came from her room and stood in front of him, shoulders slumped and looking down.
“You better make sure you put your toys away in the right place,” he scolded her. “That’s your job, not Mommy’s.”
She was silent.
“What the Hell you are just standing there for?!”
Daisy hopped around nervously in front of her small toy shelf. Amy watched, just as nervous.
“Um...um...um,” Daisy said. She moved a couple things around, then looked to him for approval.
“That’s better. If you can’t take care of your toys, you must not like them very much,” he said.
“I do!” she said.
“If you can’t put them away, I’ll have to give them all away to good girls,” he warned. “Bad girls don’t get to have all these nice toys Daddy buys for you.”
Daisy burst into tears.
“No, Daddy! I good!” she wailed.
“No more messes tonight, right?” he said.
“No messes!” she promised.
“That’s what Daddy likes to hear. Go play in your room,” he told her.
I could see Xandra, slowly shaking her head.
Things were calmer after that, mostly because Randy had retired to the computer room in the back of the house. They ate a quiet dinner together, then he went right back in. After cleaning up the kitchen, Amy stayed in Daisy’s room with her. In there, we could see as they whispered and giggled together about some imaginary place that was inhabited by unicorns and fairies, and had what seemed like a pretty nice pool. The water was rainbow colored.
“Do you think after we ride them, the unicorns would like to swim with us?” Amy asked.
Daisy jumped up and down, and nodded.
“How about the fairies?”
Daisy should her head.
“Why not?”
“Wings get all wet!” Daisy explained, throwing her arms up in the air.
“Ah, and then they wouldn’t be able to fly! You are so smart, I didn’t even think of that,” Amy said.
They pretended to be fairies, and flew around the room until bedtime.
By the time Amy came out, Randy had settled on the couch, and was watching TV in the living room.
“Come watch with me,” he said to her.
On a commercial break, Randy touched the slightly yellow bruise underneath Amy’s eye.
“It’s just about gone, see? You’re fine,” he said to her.
She said nothing, just scowled.
“Aw, come on. Don’t be a baby. Come here,” he said pulling her closer to him.
“What?” she complained.
“Daisy’s probably asleep by now,” he pointed out.
“And?” she asked, immediately wary of him.
“And you should give me a blow job,” he said bluntly.
“No way!” she said, wiggling out of his arms. “Daisy might wake up!”
“You are such a prude!” he shouted jumping up off the couch. “You’re awful at it anyway. Maybe if you did it more often, and actually tried it wouldn’t take you so fucking long to get me off. Then you wouldn’t bitch about your jaw getting sore!”
“Just leave me alone!” she cried, sinking into the corner of the couch and hugging her legs.
“I’m gonna go take a piss, and you’re gonna go heat up those leftovers,” he said, and walked down the hall.
Amy jumped up, and stomped off to the kitchen. Now, I was the one that could see her directly through the window. She threw something in the microwave, and slammed it’s door shut.
“Quit slamming shit around out there,” Randy yelled from the bathroom. “And don’t eat any more of that. You had plenty at dinner!”
I could see Amy’s profile perfectly through the window as tears rolled down her face, and she defiantly shoved a French fry in her mouth. She ran to the fridge then, and took a few gulps of bottled water.
Daisy, still in her room, started to cry.
As soon as the food in the microwave was done, Amy gave it to him, then rushed towards her daughter’s room.
“Where do you think you’re going? We’re watching TV, get back here and sit down!” he ordered her.
Daisy kept on crying, but Amy took her place on the couch.
“Daisy!” he roared. “Quit being whiney like your mom and go to sleep!”
The crying got louder.
“You know, if you let me go in there she’ll stop,” Amy pointed out.
“Fine, but I’m not pausing it,” he said, gesturing to the TV with the remote control.
“I could give a shit about the stupid show,” Amy muttered, popping up from her seat.
None of us could see into Daisy’s room, the curtains were closed now, but we could hear Amy quietly comforting her. She offered Daisy several stuffed animals. Eventually, she decided on one named Mr. Fuzzy, and went to sleep.
While Amy was out of the room, asshole of the century had lit a cigarette.
*Uh, oh. Here it goes,* Adam thought.
We’d all seen this fight before. Amy confronted him as soon as she came back into the room.
“I thought you were only gonna smoke in here when the weather was bad?” she said, standing in front of where he sat.
He ignored her.
“It’s called a compromise, Randy. I’m really trying here!”
“Just because you quit when you were pregnant, doesn’t mean I have to,” he said dismissively.
“You said you would smoke outside!”
“Speaking of when you were pregnant, you said you were gonna loose that thirty pounds of baby weight. How’s that going?” he asked with a sneer.
“It was not thirty,” she mumbled sitting back down on the other end of the couch.
“Oh, really? How much was it?” he said.
Now, she ignored him.
“How much?” he said again, getting right in her face. “How much?!”
Xandra let out a snarl, and took a few quick steps forward. Adam and I followed her lead, and did the same.
“Twenty seven,” Amy whispered.
“What was that? I didn’t quite hear you?”
“Twenty seven!” she shouted.
“That’s what I thought. Go downstairs and finish the laundry. You don’t want to run out of mumus to wear.”
“Fuck you! They’re called night shirts!” she shot back.
The three of us started howling like crazy. We’d figured out that when we did that, it was a good distraction. Randy always went to a window to see where it was coming from, or it made their dog join us. Better he be yelling at the dog, than Amy. He hadn’t hit Lucky, at least not that we knew of.
They eventually went to bed. Xandra wondered how she could sleep next to him after that.
I was really, really happy when Quil, Brady, and Matt popped in as they were leaving Jake’s place to come relieve us.
I couldn’t get away from there fast enough. That had been even worse than the last time.
My Mollie had waited up for me. Thank God, because she was the only one who could make me feel good after a night like that. Even better, she was in the kitchen with Nessie, frying up chicken. Adam couldn’t resist staying for a little while after getting a whiff of that.
“Eat up!” Nessie encouraged us all.
Jake went in the backyard to phase, and check in on things from there one more time before he went to sleep.
I was more than a little surprised when Anthony came down to join us for our midnight meal. The only thing he had on was the pair of black sweat pants he’d been wearing the last time I’d seen him. We all got quiet, not knowing what to say around him. He looked haggard to say the least, as he walked to the table like a zombie. His eyes, barely visible with the way his lids were drooping, were bloodshot and swollen. He had some pretty impressive dark bags under them too.
He loudly plopped down in the open chair next to me. He reached to the middle of the table, not bothering to get a plate, and grabbed a chicken thigh.
Nessie was the first to speak.
“Hey, sweetie,” she said.
“Hey,” he croaked, without looking at her.
He was apparently more interested in talking to me.
“How is she?” he asked with his mouth full.
At least I had a little bit of a good news to tell him.
“She played pretend with Daisy. They were in some crazy world where they went swimming with unicorns and pretended to be fairies. It was pretty cute,” I said.
He offered a weak smile, and took another bite of chicken.
Nessie got up and poured everyone a glass of milk. Anthony ignored his at first, but then when I looked over, he was drinking the last of it. Nessie nonchalantly placed the milk carton, and the serving bowl of buttery mashed potatoes within his reach. He finished them both off.
When Jake came back inside through the kitchen’s sliding glass door, Anthony stood up so suddenly that it made Ness and Mollie jump.
“I want to see her,” he announced to his dad.
For the time being, Anthony could only phase if he had the okay from Jake. It was too hard to trust him right now. Otherwise, he’d have stayed a wolf this entire time. Since a few of the pack were always there, basically, Anthony always would be too. He’d be in worse shape than he was now.
Jake and Nessie looked at each other.
“I think the morning might be better,” Jake suggested.
“Is she awake?” he asked.
“Yeah.”
“Alone?”
“Yeah, now just isn’t the best time,” Jake said.
“Dad, it’s been more than a day,” Anthony reminded him, sounding desperate.
Jake looked at Nessie again, and sighed.
“You really wanna see her crying at the kitchen table?” Jake asked him.
“Yes,” he replied, without hesitation.
“Be my guest then,” Jake said, and opened the door for him.
Anthony ran through it, jumped off the porch and was a wolf by the time he hit the ground. He was still for a minute, then started to howl. He dropped onto his stomach, I wasn’t sure if he did it on purpose, or if he collapsed. He rested his head on his paws, and even though Amy didn’t know it, Anthony cried right along with her.
“Maybe if he just stays wolf, he’ll go to sleep when she does,” Jake said to Nessie.
“Maybe. I dunno,” she answered, her voice breaking.
She put a fresh pair of pants on the porch for him as he whimpered in the grass, and then went straight to her bedroom.
I hadn’t even noticed Mollie leave my side, until she came back wearing her pajamas.
She grabbed my hand, and took me upstairs to her room. In her bed, we faced each other and shared her pillow. She threw her leg over my hip, and I let her touch calm me as she ran her fingers through my short hair.
“How was it, really?” she asked, now that we were alone.
“Pretty bad. I just don’t get how he can be that cruel to somebody he’s supposed to love,” I said. “I have no idea how she can stand it.”
Mollie frowned and cradled my face with her little hand.
“Mom said it’s probably normal to her by now. A.J. offered her a way out, hopefully soon she’ll take it.”
We just had to wait for her to grab that life preserver.
I didn’t even feel like having any fun at that point. There was some kissing and touching, sure, but Mollie was tired and was soon asleep on my chest.
I wasn’t able to fall asleep just yet, I could still hear Anthony outside. When he became quiet, I thought maybe he’d fallen asleep out there in the yard.
Good, that’s just what he needs.
I heard the door open though, just a minute later.
“Mom?” he called.
Almost immediately, I heard Nessie’s feet moving quickly across the bottom floor of the house.
“What’s the matter?” she asked him.
“I just wanted to...I think I’d like to read one of those books now.”
That sounded a lot more like the Anthony we all knew and loved.
I kissed the top of Mollie’s head, and with the house finally quiet, I held her close to me and drifted off to sleep.
