The ride back to the Circus was the most awkward in history. Nobody seemed able to look at anybody else. Anita had tried twice to apologize to Jean-Claude, and he in turn had told her to shove her apology up her ass, or the French equivalent there of. Asher alternated between wanting to comfort Willow and wanting to shoot Spike again. Spike was very much wishing he was still drunk, and that he could do something to make Willow stop crying. Willow wished someone would just stop the world so she could get off. And poor Nathaniel was stuck in the middle of it all, not knowing how to make of of it br, ar, and wishing that the limo would hurry up and get to the Circus because he couldn’t stand being around their misery any longer.
When they did arrive, Jason met them at the door and ushered them past the main chamber where, from the sounds of it, a great party was taking place. After escorting them to their bedrooms, he instructed them to dress quickly and join the party. Jean-Claude arched an eyebrow at the young werewolf that he would presume to tell his master what to do, but Jason at least had the good grace to look embarrassed before rushing off again.
Everyone went to their separate rooms to get ready, not wanting to speak to each other. When they were finished dressing, they all met back up in the hall, so Jason could properly arrange them to make their entrance. They did all look pretty stunning in an assortment of leather, lace, and spandex, but Willow’s puffy eyes and the collective defeated posture didn’t help their image.
Jason sighed with frustration, moving people around like a parade coordinator, which was essentially what he was. In front was Jean-Claude with Anita on his right arm and Asher standing on his left. Behind them he placed Spike and Willow, who both looked a bit green when he locked their arms together. He and Nathaniel would bring up the rear like the good pets they were.
“Okay people, I know it’s a lot to ask, but could you try to look a bit less grim? I meean-ean-Claude, you lik like you just ate a bug and you’re supposed to be hosting this shin-dig.”
The dark-haired vampire frowned slightly. “Jason, you forget yourself,” he reprimanded, but his toas nas not harsh, more like a teacher with a favored pupil.
“Sorry, but I’ve managed to keep these people happy, which wasn’t easy. I just don’t want you going in there and bumming everyone out. If they stay happy then they won’t feel the need to entertain themselves at our expense.”
“Fuck that!” Anita blurted out, and then looked at Jean-Claude apologetically when she felt his arm go rigid beneath her hand. Trying to tone down her nature to argue she added, “I mean…we gave these people asylum when we didn’t have to. They have no right to make any demands on us.”
“Non, ma petite,” Jean-Claude answered her with less affection than he had used with Jason before. “We need the council to help us defeat the Dark Mother, or we are all lost. They know this and therefore Jason is right. It would serve us better to keep them happy.”
“But…”
“No but,” he heaved a heavy sigh. “I grow weary of constantly having to fight this fight with you, ‘Anita.’ The world is not fair; it is a cruel and hard place where people will hurt you if they can.” At this he gave her a pointed stare that made her flinch. “Sometimes a little finesse is required for survival. It is not a sign of weakness to make compromises; it is a sign of intelligence.”
Anita opened her mouth to ask if he was calling her stupid, but then thought better of it and closed it again. He only called her ‘Anita’ when he was either very angry or very serious, and at the moment he seemed to be both.
Jason looked back and forth between the two, shaking his head. “Again, too serious. At least try to smile, people. If we survive tonight, you can all go back to hating each other tomorrow. Oh, and Asher, they are going to try to mess with you the most, given your history with the Council. I think it would be best to just show them you’re healed from the get go. That way we can show off Willow and Spike a bit. They'llseenseen as powerful new allies, and that can only help our position.”
“I’m not parading about like some nancy-boy for anybody, mate. So forget that rot,” Spike said with disgust, starting to turn to go back to his room, but Willow’s hand on his arm stopped him.
“Spike, the sooner we get all this over with, assuming we don’t die before it’s done, the sooner I can find a way to get us home. Okay?” Willow said, not meeting Asher’s eyes.
“You think you can actually get us back?”
“Maybe, I think so. I have to try anyway. My powers here just keep growing and causing problems. They’ve already woken up the Mother of All Darkness. Thousands of people are dead now because of me. One way or another we can’t stay here, it’s too dangerous.”
Asher moved forward and lifted Willow’s chin so that he could meet her eyes, ignoring the warning growl from Spike. “You’re not the cause of those deaths, petite sorciere. You are a great source of strength bea beauty in the world. You have given me my life back. Even if you cannot give me your love as well, I will always be grateful to you.”
“Asher, I…”
“Non, say nothing. I was fooling myself to think I could keep you when your heart clearly lies elsewhere. I am not bitter, just a touch sad perhaps. But now you will share your gifts with others, you will help us defeat the Sweet Mother, and perhaps save us all.” He glanced at Spike briefly and then back at her. “Do not give up hope, cherie, you will find your proper place in the end.”
Jason hated to break up the intimate moment, but their ‘guests’ wouldn’t wait forever. “Okay, we should really go in now. Is everyone ready? I feel like there’s something I’m forgetting to tell you…mmm…shit, I can’t think of it…”
“Let us just go in,” Jean-Claude said, starting to move the group forward toward the large chamber. “We will deal with things as they come. Smile everyone. Let us pretend for this night that we are indeed united together.”
Heading into the giant room where parties were occasionally held, the sight that met their eyes was a bit overwhelming. The music was loud, but low enough to still allow conversation. Weres of every kind were in attendance, standing on tables, stripping, offering up blood, and the willing ones providing sexual entertainment. Three council members were somewhere in all this but it was impossible to spot them with everything that was happening. Then someone else spotted them.
Anita heard a warm familiar laugh that made a knot clench in her stomach, a second before a golden brown blur launched himself across the room and swept her and Jean-Claude up into a fierce bear hug. “Richard!” she managed to squeak out.
Jason looked at her and a very shocked Jean-Claude sheepishly. “Oh yeah, I knew there was something I was forgetting.”
