Hook kicked his doors open after fighting his way across the deck through the snowstorm that had become considerably worse in just a short amount of time. This was perhaps one of the worst winters they had to endure. James grumbled and growled as he shook off the snow and ice that covered him. Perhaps the boy would wait until tomorrow, he didn’t particularly want to brave that storm again. He had a roaring fire, a heated cabin, and a beautiful warm woman to lie next to.
He returned to his desk taking out yet another bottle of spirits and pouring a glass. It was a habit he had formed each time he came in from cold conditions, regardless of how much he had already had during the course of the long night. The surgeon entered into the cabin next pushing the doors closed behind him carrying his kit. He paused a moment looking about the cabin not seeing Caitlin anywhere. “She is there.” He said waving his hand towards the drawn curtains that led to his bed.
The surgeon nodded and disappeared behind the curtains. James closed up the bottle and walked around to where he had left Aurora before he and Caitlin dined earlier in the night. Putting down his glass he hooked the cloth with his artificial appendage pulling it from the lantern. Inside she had pulled the quill down across the candle making sort of a hammock to rest in. He raised a brow at how incredibly loud the tiny creature snored. Hook did not think it was possible for such a loud noise to come out of such a small form.
Reaching up he tapped his metal hook against the glass window causing Aurora’s eyes to pop open startled as she fell from her feather bed. She looked about before looking up seeing her Captain standing there starring down at her. Standing quickly she walked to the glass door looking up at him with a smile on her face, letting her wings flutter a few times. Apparently he was the most wonderful thing she could imagine to wake up to.
“I had intended for you to identify a stowaway tonight, but I would rather wait until morning. Waiting until in between storms to do so.” She nodded anxiously wanting to help him however he wanted her too. Hook picked up his glass taking a large drink looking down at her again, “You shall be spending quite a while in your glass quarters Miss Sun. I suggest you become accustomed to it. I do not want you roaming about the cabin. Caitlin has had quite enough shocks in the past few weeks, she does not need a close encounter with a demonic Pixie.” Aurora frowned, she didn’t mind being locked in this cage if it was what he wanted, but not because of that . . . human woman.
Caitlin had changed for bed, and the doctor had her sit on the bed while he changed her dressings checking the stitches to make sure everything was healing alright and there was no infection. Cat just watched him in silence, no words and no questions. He did find this a bit odd, but finished attending to her shoulder wound first. Once he was finished, he put his tools and supplies back in his kit, before kneeling beside her looking into her eyes. Feeling her forehead to make sure there was no fever, another sign of weather or not her wound held an infection but there was none there. She felt fine.
“Miss Cat, how are ye feeling?” He inquired wanting to hear her speak. Her eyes just looked into his, as she remained silent. There was no doubt that she had heard him, and she was completely responsive to everything that was going on around her. Yet it was as if she had been struck dumb since they had returned to the ship. “Ye must tell me, I can’t help ye if you do not tell me what’s wrong.” He said with a kind smile trying to make her feel more at ease. He was one of the more educated crewmembers, obviously since he was the ship doctor and surgeon.
Thinking for a moment he tried to think of something that might get a response out of her. “Cat, do ye remember the battle? Do ye remember the Captain finding ye in the cave?” She sat still for a moment just starring into his face, before slowly she nodded once. He had a feeling that he knew what was causing her silence, and decided to push her a little more. “Do ye remember the boy who died and fell at ye’re feet and it’s stopping the battle.” Her eyes suddenly moved down cast a moment, not being able to look at him. He waited a moment giving her a few moments time to think about it. “Do ye?” Slowly her tear filled eyes moved back up to his, giving him his answer.
The doctor sighed thinking for a few moments, he was at times considered a councilor to most of the men at different times. Normally when they had been wounded, and lost a limb or a body part. “Do ye know why that boy died? . . . He was going to kill ye, he was going to throw a large rock down on top of ye’re head while ye were fighting those other lost boys. Had he not been stopped, ye would not be sitting here now.” It was in her eyes that she didn’t completely understand what he was telling her, but it was opening a few doors in her mind that had been slammed shut since she saw the corpse. “Cat, the children here. . . appear to be little boys, but they aren’t. They kill as freely as any pirate aboard this ship. Do ye remember ever hearing the sayin’, “Those who live by the sword, die by the sword?” . . . if we don’t defend ourselves we die. If they don’t defend themselves they die. . . .as ye are the Captain’s bride, you must get used to this and try to understand the way things are here.” Her eyes went down cast again as she was able to turn things over in her mind now, rather then just pushing them back.
The doctor sighed reaching up brushing a few strains of hair from her face, “Can ye understand that?” She nodded a little letting him know she would think on his words. He nodded giving her a kind smile putting his hand over hers that rested on her thigh, giving her a comforting touch.
“Perhaps you would like to return to your quarters, now that her wound has been tended to.” The doctor quickly took his hand back from Caitlin’s as he stood to his feet turning towards the curtain opening. There stood the Captain, a dark displeased look gracing his face. He was not at all happy at the tender touches of his surgeon he had just witnessed, on his wife. The surgeon just nodded quickly gathering up his kit before slipping out of the curtains into the main part of the Cabin. Hook’s gaze moved to Caitlin trying to see if she had been encouraging the surgeon in anyway. Narrowing his eyes he left her alone, following after the doctor.
A short while later, James returned slipping into the drawn curtains. The light had not been extinguished yet and Caitlin had not retired. In fact, Caitlin was not in the cabin at all. Since he was quite intoxicated, he didn’t think to look for her and went strait to his bed collapsing onto it just in time to pass out. Luckily he missed falling on his Hook as it lay by his head.
Late the next morning, he stirred to yet another pounding at the door. His brow furrowed and he rolled over, expecting to wrap his arm around Caitlin. However he found she was not there. His eyes opened finding the space next to him empty. Sitting up quickly he looked about, “Caitlin?” He called out waiting for a response finding none came. He rolled out of bed getting to his feet throwing open the heavy curtains that closed off his bed from the rest of the Cabin, “Caitlin? Where the devil are you?” He searched about the cabin finding he was alone yet again. It annoyed him that he continued to wake finding her missing.
The pounding came at the door again, and he turned roaring at the door, “ENTER!” Smee opened the door and poked his head in, looking about. He saw the state the Captain was in and swallowed the lump in his throat knowing that he was not going to be in the best of spirits. “Smee, Caitlin has gone missing yet AGAIN and I want to know why she was not here when I awoke . . . . if she has been kidnapped again I sware every last living thing on that blasted island is going to pay!!! . . .”
Smee cleared his throat before speaking nervously, “She hasn’t been kidnapped Capt’n.”
Hook turned and looked at him before walking towards him, “What? Where is she?” Smee had to clear his throat yet again finding it difficult to speak.
“Uh . . . I’m afraid this is one of those things you’re going to have to see Capt’n.” The Captain narrowed his eyes at this. There was no possible way that this could be a good thing awaiting him.
“Oh for the love of GOD, what on earth can it be this time.” Grasping his coat he pulled it on following after Smee. This was getting quite monotonous, could he not find just one solid day of peace with things going as they should, gracefully and normally.
Once again they made their way down below decks, and once again they entered into the Galley. Both Smee and the Captain stood at the steps in awe of the sight. “She’s been ‘ere all night Capt’n. The Cook came to me this mornin’ and wanted to know what he should do.” The Galley had been cleaned from the inside out. The floor, walls and even the ceiling had been scrubbed, the pots and dishes and everything had been thoroughly washed perhaps a few times. James eyes went wide as he saw Caitlin on her hands and knees, a bucket of soapy water and a brush in her hands as she scrubbed on the floor. She had her hair up, and wrapped tightly in a handkerchief.
There was a look of confusion and absolute outrage in his eyes. In an instant he moved to Caitlin and jerked her up off the floor, “What in this godforsaken world do you think you are doing!!!” He yelled at her, not really looking for an answer. James took the brush from her hands and flung it across the room before grabbing her shoulder roughly as he threw her towards the stairs. Smee stepped aside quickly not wanting to get in the middle of this argument. Hook walked after her grasping the back of her dress pulling her up the stairs after him with very little effort.
He drug her through the snow and the wind across the deck returning up the stairs that led to his cabin. Kicking the doors open he threw her into the room, before entering himself and closing the doors pulling the locks across the door. Cat hurried to her feet stumbling slight as her legs had gotten tangled in her skirts. Hook pulled her too her feet pushing her back a few more feet his anger taking away all rational thought. “It has been one headache after another with you as of late my young bride. As if it wasn’t challenging enough to retrieve you from your adolescent captors on the island in the middle of a blizzard, I awake to find you making a complete spectacle of yourself below decks in front of the ENTIRE crew!!”
Reaching up he grasped the scarf that had wrapped around her hair and jerked it off, “EXPLAIN YOURSELF!!!” He shouted at her. Caitlin shivered slightly but took the stance of courage that she had always taken before when she found herself in trouble.
“I needed time to think James! . . . I couldn’t do it here, so I left the cabin and found something else to do!” It was obvious that Caitlin was doing better today, back to her normal self. She had managed to sort out the things that had been happening lately and get them strait in her mind with the held of the doctors words the night before. James eye started to twitch, it seemed as if she had manage to do something that was completely unthinkable.
“I did NOT marry a blasted SCULLERY MAID! You do not belong on your hands and knees scrubbing the decks! That is the crewmen’s job NOT yours!” He took a deep breath before continuing, “You are my wife, the Captain’s wife and as such there are certain behaviors that accompany your station. Doing chores that belong to the miscreant misfits aboard this ship is NOT one of them!”
“James, I honestly needed to find something to do. I thought I was going to go mad just sitting up here sitting idley! I wrote page after page until there was nothing left in me to write trying to sort out everything and my mind was still raging with everything that had happened, I couldn’t understand any of it, and honestly . . . I still don’t understand most of it. But I can try to understand now, if someone takes the time to explain things to me!” She said her voice in a slightly shaky tone as she spoke. James face did not change or soften at her words and Caitlin felt sick to her stomach.
She turned her face away unable to look at him and breathe at the same time. James was to enraged to let her turn away from him and reached up grasping her jaw forcing her to look at him, “If on your knees is where you have to be to quite your thoughts, I have a far better use for you mouth then you could ever find with your hands like any common whore!!” He shouted at her, his rage to great to control what he said. Hook winced on the inside at what he had just said, but was too angry with her to apologize or take it back. It was the most vile and vulgar comment he just made to her.
Caitlin was ignorant about quite a few things, but she was far from stupid or unintelligent knowing exactly what he had just called her. Tears filled her eyes and she clinched her teeth tight. Before she could stop herself or even imagine the consequences she brought her face hard across his cheek, knocking his face to one side. Hook paused there his eyes closed a mark from where she had smacked him. Cat’s eyes went wide as she couldn’t believe what she had just done, and whom she had just done it to as her hand cupped her mouth shocked at herself. James eye was twitching again, as it seemed she had tried his patients to the absolute last.
He turned looking at her with pure malice, a small yet dark evil smile creasing his lips. There was absolutely no caring, concern, or love he normally looked at her with. She had never seen him look at her like that before and her blood ran cold with his gaze. Cat could feel her heart stop in her chest at the look and quickly took a few steps back, seeing him beginning to move towards her. Turning on her heel she tried to run from him, but the doors were locked and there was no place to go. He followed after her letting her run to and fro like a terrified rabbit.
Finding herself in a corner she turned finding James standing just a few feet from her, the same demonic look on his face. Taking a deep breath she tried to run past him but he caught her arm and threw her against the wall. The force with which she it the wall, knocked out her wind and she gasped for air her eyes quickly moving back to her husband. She had had every right in the world to smack him for such inappropriate words, and James knew this. She had never been the kind to stand still and quietly while someone disparaged her. But James had already been quite displeased and angry with her when she had invoked the rite of any Lady who was spoken to in such a manner.
However the ill-tempered Captain had never allowed anyone to assault him without consequence either. Certainly not any woman that he had taken before Harlot, prisoner, or whore got away with such insolents, any words he shouted at them he meant with every fiber of his being. As it had always been, his feeling was quite different with Caitlin, and he held her in higher regard then any other, and held an unfathomable respect for his wife. It was a reaction from the pride she held deep within that allowed her to stand on her own two feet since she had to fend for herself after the death of her parents. He would no doubt regret his actions later when had had a chance to calm down and let his rage subside.
In a fit of anger he slashed his Hook at her chest, missing just barely as Caitlin’s eyes went wide and she jerked back out of the way just in time. Finding her back against the wall she wouldn’t be able to dodge the sharp claw if he struck at her again. Coughing and gasping still she saw his hook preparing to come at her again. Cat did the only thing she could think of to do and lunged forward wrapping her arms tight around the forearm that was without a hand and held the deadly weapon in it’s place.
It was quite unexpected and James moved his arm intending to throw her off but she held on tight, unwilling to let loose of the murderous steel he wielded that had taken lives before. She did not want to be added to it’s score. He moved again and was almost successful, but she caught his hook and pulled back up to his arm clutching on for dear life again. She cried out loudly pleading with him to stop, “JAMES please!!! STOP . . . STOP IT!!” Taking his good hand he tried to push her off, to no avail her fear made her amazingly strong as she felt the only way she could save herself was to not release his arm. All of the jerking and pulling that was being done tore the delicate stitches of the wound in her shoulder. Tears filled her eyes looking up at him, just in time to catch his knuckles across the cheek he had struck in the same manner before.
This caught her off guard and she lost her grip on his arm crying out as she fell to the floor, covering her face with her hand. He stood over her breathing hard, as she coughed again and started to push away from him on the floor looking up at him with terror. “PLEASE forgive me! I didn’t know! I swear to you I didn’t!” Tears flowing down her face as she found herself backed against the wall yet again. James walked over to her the same insane look in his eyes as he looked down at her. He grit his teeth as he raised his hook ready to strike and tear her flesh open. Cat closed her eyes tight more tears escaping waiting for it to drop on her.
His eyes caught the crimson that was quickly darkening the white of her sleeve on her shoulder, and running down her arm dripping from her fingers onto the floor and the skirts of her dress. Something about seeing this, from Caitlin of all people seemed to snap him back into his senses as he realized what he had been doing. It seemed like an eternity passed as his face literally changed back into the face that Cat had known from the quiet gentle times they spent together. His breath held deep in his chest as his eyes shifted to his hook, not believing what he had almost done to her. His eyes shifted back to the terrified woman that lay on the floor before him. He lowered it seeing the stain of blood growing on her sleeve.
“Caitlin . . .” He breathed quickly kneeling on the floor next to her, never knowing how she could forgive him for his actions towards her. “Oh God forgive me.” Looking over her still in shock of himself, feeling completely unworthy of touching her in anyway. However if he just left her and did nothing her wound would continue to drain and she had lost blood that had not been restored already. Reaching up he tore the bloodstained sleeve from her dress and wrapped it around her shoulder tight to control the bleeding, not able to look at her face.
Once the makeshift bandage was in place he moved scooping her up into his arms carrying her over to the fainting couch laying her down. He turned from her and left the Cabin, sending the surgeon who was mending wounds of his own he had sustained from the iron hook for touching Cat in the captain’s sight, to tend to her.
James couldn’t bring himself to return to the Cabin right away, in fact he couldn’t see himself able to do so anytime in the near future. He had to find something else to do to occupy his time. It didn’t take him long to remember that there was a ‘guest’ aboard the ship he had questions to ask. There was no better time then now to find out what he wanted to know.
