Jacob opened his eyes in the morning and found Liam right beside him, watching him. “Morning.” Jacob yawned and stretched. Liam leaned over and planted a tender kiss on the werewolf’s lips. Jacob’s body reacted and pressed itself against cold velvet skin. “Keep that up and we’ll be late picking up Bella’s mom.”
Liam pulled back. “I guess we can’t have that, can we?”
Jacob chuckled. “She’d never forgive us.”
“Sure she would, especially if we told her why.” Liam smirked evilly.
Jacob shook his head and swung his legs over the edge of the bed. “As much as I’d love to ravish you about ten more times, I’d rather not take the chance.”
Liam pouted as he watched Jacob pull his discarded clothes back on before getting dressed himself. They gathered their things and headed out to the airport, arriving just in time to greet Renee and Phil at the gate. “Oh, my, when Bella told me Edward’s uncle was picking us up I pictured someone older and not so handsome,” Renee gushed when Liam greeted her.
Liam flashed a friendly smile. “Well, I am Carlisle’s baby brother. But you, you don’t look old enough to have a daughter Bella’s age.”
Renee blushed. Jacob held out his hand. “And I’m Bella’s friend Jake.”
Renee took his hand while looking him up and down. “Yes, I’ve heard a lot about you, and she didn’t exaggerate.”
It was Jacob’s turn to blush a little. He was very aware that his size made him stick out in public like a sore thumb. “Shall we go?” Liam suggested, picking up their bags and heading out to Jacob’s car.
When they pulled into the driveway at the Cullens’ house, guests were already starting to arrive. Charlie was waiting for them on the porch. He exchanged a few pleasantries with Renee before going with her to see their daughter. Liam showed Phil to his seat while shaking his head at the decorations. There were flowers everywhere, and the scent was nearly overpowering. Leave it to Alice to go overboard, as usual.
Liam and Jacob took their seats in the second row and waited for the ceremony to begin. After a moment Liam heard Alice calling for him, and he rose to go see what the problem was. He found Bella standing in the bathroom looking as pale as the rest of the family, and she was shaking like a leaf. “Don’t tell me you’ve changed your mind,” he mused.
“I—I—" Bella stuttered, gripping the edge of the sink so tightly her knuckles were white.
Liam put a hand on her shoulder and her body relaxed instantly. “I know you have a fear of attention, but you’ll be fine, I promise.”
Bella gave him a weak smile. “Suddenly you’re being all nice and supportive?”
Liam shrugged. “I figured it wouldn’t kill me.”
“Oh, you’re a riot,” Bella said sarcastically.
Liam let out a dramatic sigh. “Everyone’s a critic. Are you all right now?”
“I think so.” Bella swallowed hard. “This is just a little much.”
“Just take deep breaths and remember what this day is about,” Liam said as he led her to the top of the stairs where Charlie was waiting. “Oh, and try not to trip.” Bella shot him a dirty look and, chuckling, he returned to his seat.
“Everything okay?” Jacob asked.
“Yeah, she just has cold feet.”
Jacob took Liam’s hand in his and pulled his mate a little closer. The music started and Charlie walked down the aisle with Bella on his arm. She still looked nervous, but in control of herself. They sat leaning against each other and listened to the preacher speak. It seemed rather ironic that a vampire was being married by a holy man.
Looking around the room, Jacob couldn’t help but wonder how everyone could seem so content. Quite a few of the guests hated the thought of Bella becoming a vampire as much as he did. This wedding was just one more step toward defeat. And yet, everyone looked on with smiles.
The werewolf relaxed against Liam’s cold form and tried not to think about it too much. He trusted his mate, and Liam didn’t seem worried. Once Jacob finally relaxed, he started getting lost in the spirit of things along with everyone else. The way Edward looked at Bella...even though he was a vampire who was going to damn her to the depths of hell, there was love in his eyes. In that moment they weren’t a human and a vampire. They were two people pledging their love to one another, and it was actually rather romantic.
A small smile appeared on Jacob’s lips. Maybe that was why no one seemed upset about this. They were enjoying the moment. The battle for Bella’s soul could wait until tomorrow. For now, their love was all that mattered.
As Edward leaned in to kiss his new bride, Jacob moved to whisper in Liam’s ear, “Marry me?”
“Huh?” Liam turned his head toward Jacob with a stunned expression.
Bella and Edward were making their way back down the aisle now, with eyes for no one but each other (even so, Bella managed the whole thing without tripping once). Friends and family rose and went to join them and offer their congratulations. Liam and Jacob, who got up automatically when everyone else did, were left for a moment in their own little world.
Jacob gently turned Liam toward the newlyweds and continued persuasively as they slowly made their way toward the rest of the group. “We could get one of the elders to do it. Sure, it would only be legal on Quileute land, but still, you’d be mine.”
Liam started laughing and Jacob looked like he was about to cry. “Oh, no, sweetheart.” Liam contained himself long enough to stroke Jacob’s chin lightly. “It’s just that you may be able to convince an elder to marry you to another man, but what about to a vampire?”
“Oh.” Jacob hung his head. “I’m sorry, I didn’t think about that. I guess I just got caught up in the moment.”
Liam brushed his hands through Jacob’s hair. “And that’s one of the many things I love about you. Tell you what: if you can get an elder to agree to officiate, I’ll marry you.” Jacob wrapped his arms around Liam and pulled him into a crushing bear-hug.
A few feet away Carlisle stumbled and fell. “Are you all right?” Charlie stopped and offered him a hand up.
“Yes, I’m fine,” Carlisle assured his new in-law as he got to his feet and smoothed out his clothes. “I guess it’s just all the excitement.” His eyes darted to Liam and Jacob. “I’ll be fine.”
The guests were ushered outside, where a dance floor was set up on the lawn. Alice had reused the Christmas lights she’d gotten for the graduation party to give the yard a nice dim glow. “Leave it to you to nearly give me a heart attack when I don’t even have a pulse,” Carlisle mumbled to Liam on the way out.
“He did it.” Liam pointed to Jacob.
“But you said yes to a proposal. I thought hell would freeze over first.”
Liam chuckled. “Didn’t you hear? Hell froze over last week in a freak snowstorm.”
“I must have missed that report.”
“You’re forgiven.”
Soft music began to play from speakers that had been set up on the side of the house. Edward pulled Bella close and they began their first dance as husband and wife. Liam took Jacob’s hand minutes later and led him out on the dance floor. They received quite a few stares, but neither of them cared.
The whole evening was pleasant and fairly uneventful, for which everyone was grateful. Bella had been worried that something would go wrong, courtesy of her usual wonderful luck. One of her biggest concerns was the presence of the Denali clan. There had been quite a bit of recent unpleasantness; not only was Irina upset because of Laurent, but Alex had caused trouble by trying to win Liam back.
Fortunately, neither Irina nor Alex had come, and the rest of the clan seemed friendly and gracious. They were even being nice to Jacob and Seth, the only werewolves to attend. Billy and Sue Clearwater were also there, and while they seemed wary, they too were on their best behavior.
Liam beamed every time someone complimented the food. He was really proud of the cake; he’d spent hours on it, making sure it was perfect. Eventually the newlyweds cut the cake, Edward playing his part and licking the drizzle of icing off Bella’s finger. Then it was time for them to leave for their honeymoon.
“Will you tell me where we’re going now?” Bella asked after she changed and was being escorted to the car.
“All I’m saying is that I’m jealous,” Liam said as he neatly packed their bags in the trunk.
Jacob pulled his friend into another hug. “Have a good time, and be safe.” He wished her well and kissed the top of her head.
When the car was out of sight, Jacob turned to Liam. “I don’t know why you’re jealous of them. I’m not. I consider wherever you are to be heaven.”
“So cheesy,” Liam shook his head, “but sweet.”
Carlisle spoiled the moment by placing a hand on each of their shoulders. “Before you two sneak off, you’re helping us clean up.”
“Aww, but Daddy . . .” Liam protested.
“Don’t daddy me. I’m not letting you two weasel out of this.”
“Fine,” Liam sighed. “Let’s get this over and done with so we can finish what we started this morning.”
