Chapter 28 – The Confrontation
On the way back home from the opera house, Christine didn’t speak to Raoul. She was so shocked and angry that she simply couldn’t find the words to express herself. All she could do was look out the window blankly while he talked about his business dealings.
“So did you enjoy seeing the Opera Populaire again?” he asked, hoping to get her to speak to him. He couldn’t help but notice that she’d been unusually quiet.
She didn’t answer, still looking out the window.
“Christine, didn’t you hear me?”
This time she did turn to look at him, but with a far away expression.
“What did you say?” she asked, still obviously distracted.
“I asked if you enjoyed your visit,” Raoul answered.
She only nodded and turned away again, unable to stand looking at him for more than a few seconds. It wasn’t easy trying to come to grips with what she’d just discovered, after believing something else for a year – a year that was lost to her now. All that time, she could have been happy with Erik, if Raoul had not interfered. There was no way that she could ever forgive him for that. They had been friends since childhood. It sickened Christine that he would hurt her in such a manner. The person she’d thought him to be would have never done anything so selfish and cruel. She remained silent until they reached her apartment.
When they were inside, Raoul walked with Christine when she went to put Elaine in her crib.
As they made their way to the sitting room, she decided to speak. Lynette wasn’t home at the moment.
“Did you know that the opera needs a new leading lady?” she asked casually.
“Yes, the managers told me.”
“I think I might try to get my old job back,” she said. “I want to make my own living.”
“Oh really?” This did strike him as odd.
“Yes, I’m completely serious about it. Do you think that they’d take me?”
“Well, I don’t know. I suppose that you could try. Why this sudden change? You were in such a hurry to leave the place before, and with good reason, after Erik treated you like he did…”
He didn’t get a chance to say another word. Christine rounded on him and slapped him hard across the face.
“Don’t you ever say his name again! I know what happened now, Raoul. I know everything! Erik didn’t write me that note. The only person that would have had reason to do it was you!” she yelled with angry tears forming in her eyes.
“Why would you say that?” he asked, his voice a bit shaky. Clearly, he was nervous.
“Oh, you want to know, do you? Well, I’ll tell you then! I saw Erik, and he was deeply hurt that I had left him. Now, can you tell me why that would be if he had not wanted to see me again?”
“I should have known that you’d go looking for that bastard,” he said, his voice suddenly so cold that Christine shuddered before slapping his cheek again.
This time she felt that she’d gone too far. His anger had risen, and his face was flushed. Raoul grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her violently.
“So, you’ve missed bedding that freak, have you? Let me tell you something, Christine. You can leave here and go back to work at the opera house, but if I ever find out that you have gotten back together with him, I will hunt him down and kill him. Do you understand? All this time I’d hoped that you would forget your Opera Ghost and want to make a life with me. I’m the one who could offer you more, but clearly you have no more sense now than you did back then!” He angrily threw her onto the couch.
She just sat there looking at him for a moment. “You wouldn’t really kill him, would you?”
“And why wouldn’t I? If you want, go ahead and try running back into his arms,” he said with a smug expression and left her alone.
