The doctor sat next to Caitlin, sewing up her wound once again. Not a sound was made as her eyes were turned away from him lost in thought. The surgeon noticed this and sighed, “It was the drink Misses. It takes any mans wits, but it releases the demon inside of the Capt’n.” He said continuing on with his work. “I don’t believe that he would ever harm ye intentionally.”
Caitlin took a deep breath before turning her eyes towards her caregiver. Thinking it strange that he had become the voice in her head that quieted the storms that raged through her heart with these occurrences. It had been James voice that had comforted her since their wedding day. Lately however, it seemed like she was causing him more grief then happiness. “I don’t act as I should. Everything I have done up until now . . . seemed to capture his interest and in some cases, pride for having chosen me to be his wife.” Her eyes moved down to the open wound on her shoulder that he continued to close. He furrowed his brow seeing her watch his sewing the tear in her skin together. It was unusual to say the least.
“You shouldn’t look Misses. Ye’ll make yerself sick.” There was no desire to see her pass out at the sight of her own blood. Cat just closed her eyes wearily before opening them looking back at the surgeons talented work.
“I’ve seen much worse.” Half smiling she looked up at him, “I’ve seen inside myself more then once.” She whispered her small smile quickly fading. His eyes shifted up to hers for a moment trying to decide what she was remembering, and weather or not it was a true memory with the circumstances that surrounded it intact as well. Cat took an uneasy breath suddenly feeling as if she was falling into a black hole with no way to catch herself, and a shiver went up her spine. Shaking her head slightly she looked up at the Surgeon, “What is your name? Is there something else that I can call you rather then Surgeon or Doctor?”
“Liam is my given name misses.” He said tying the last stitch making sure that the knot was secure to hold it in place. She smiled a little thinking she had recognized his accent a little bit. Before she could inquire he looked up at her putting his needle down. “It’s Irish, as am I. My mother, told me once that it means ‘Unwavering Protector’.” He took out some clean bandages and started to wrap her arm.
“Liam. I like that name, it sounds Irish.” Giving him a soft smile, thinking herself silly for even telling him about her name. “My name Caitlin is Irish too. I looked it up once and it’s another form of Catherine, and it means ‘Pure’.” Her eyes looked back down at the cloth he was tying around her arm. “It’s silly what our parents will name us when we are born. They have no idea if we’ll be anything like the meaning.” Liam clipped the roll of cloth before tying it securely in place.
“I think ye’r mother and father named ye appropriately.” Liam turned and started packing his supplies back away in his kit. Cat looked at him a little caught off guard by the compliment he had paid her. Closing the bag he turned back and looked at her, “And the Capt’n, thinks the same without question. He’s shouted it at many a pirate aboard the ship, including Mr. Smee when they said belittling things about ye.” She couldn’t hide the smile that swept her face, as her eyes went downcast.
“You would never know it by what he said to me today. He wasn’t still drunk when the words passed his lips.” Her eyes shifted back up to the doctors, the hurt from what he had called her still there as a few tears started to well up in her eyes she had no intention of letting fall. There wasn’t anything that he could find to say about that, it was an argument between the two married persons that only they could sort out.
“Misses, forgive me if I’m asking to personal a question . . .” Liam began as if apologizing before committing a crime. But he leaned closer looking at her very seriously, “Do ye love him?” Caitlin just starred at him for a moment in silence before having to turn her eyes away.
“He is my husband.” She said solidly, as if it was a fact that was well known and he shouldn’t have to ask. Liam saw her reaction and recognized the conflict that was wrestling around in her heart, by the look in her face.
“Tis not an answer misses. Not a direct one at any rate.” Caitlin closed her eyes and sighed a bit as her head dropped slightly. Liam thought for a moment before choosing his words carefully, “Is it . . . that ye’re afraid . . . to love him?” Cat’s eyes opened suddenly as she looked up at him, feeling as if she had to speak to someone about it. At least Liam seemed kind and was wanting to help, and gave her no reason to suspect him of wanting to do her harm. She slid forward towards him, swallowing trying to loosen the tightness of her throat.
“I do care for him . . . I worry about him when he is upset, and restless and each time he goes ashore on whatever escapade calls for his attention.” She had to stop for a moment, closing her eyes as the tears that had been held there finally escaped and slid down her cheeks as she whispered in a quivering emotion filled voice, “ . . . but I’m afraid of him.” Her eyes opened meeting Liam’s gaze for a moment. He could tell exactly what was wrong now just by seeing it in her eyes. Her fears and worries were holding her with an iron grip. It was a strange situation she had ended up in to be sure, with the loss of her memories the one person that held the keys and information to her past that she had to trust in, changed in waves. From kindness, to curiosity, to anger, to pure rage, to insane madness, to caring, to loving, and then back to hate again.
Liam took a breath reaching for his kit, picking it up. “I think ye’ll mend alright now. As long as ye stop wrestlin’ and jerkin yerself about.” Cat watched him stand knowing he was preparing to leave. She nodded quietly knowing that honestly there was nothing that anyone could do to help her with her situation.
“Thank you. Liam.” She whispered gratefully, wondering what she could possibly do to survive at least a year as Caitlin Wendy Hook. Liam wished there was more he could do but there was simply no power in his hands to do anything.
“Oh, and misses. It might be best if ye call me Doc like everyone else, when others are present.” He half smiled shaking his head, knowing just how unreasonable their Captain could be, as he tapped his own wound he had received the night before, “There already be a suspicion that ye might have more then a patients interest in me.” Caitlin frowned and nodded letting him know that she understood. “Good day to ye.” He said turning and leaving her alone. Cat lay back feeling tired, going back to her thoughts where she had been nestled for the past several days.
Down below decks, The Captain had entered the brig quietly watching the small-frightened child that sat on the floor clutching his knees tight to his chest. James Walked to the door of his cell looking down at him studying the small one for a few moments. “You know, stowaways have never been given better treatment then rats aboard any ship. Usually once they are found, they are flung over board to drown for stealing passage and food from the crew.”
James moved a few steps closer outside the bars of the child’s cell door. “Knowing how much Peter Pan and the rest of your . . . associates enjoy tales and stories of adventure, conquests, and glorious battles against the pirates that inhabit the waters of Neverland, I have no doubt you knew of such a penalty if you were caught and boarded my ship.” The young boys eyes watched the Captain as he spoke. He had indeed heard many stories about the Evil, heartless, cruel, and horrifying pirate Captain. The small one couldn’t help but shiver when his eyes came across the large Iron hook that replaced the hand Peter so often spoke of. His imagination ran wild with the things that might happen to him.
“So tell me then . . .what could possibly be on my ship you would risk losing your young and unlived life, or worse, thrown to the dark creatures of the sea, hmmm?” No answer, not one word or the smallest sound came from the child. Just his two wide starring orbs that were fixed on the extremely tall and fierce looking Pirate. Hook continued to gaze for a moment longer, it seemed as if he would get nothing from this boy. Either through deliberate insolence or fear, his tongue was fastened securely behind his teeth. “We shall see if you are in fact the lost boy we suspect you are. If you are identified to be that individual, you have quite a few things to answer for boy. I would not recommend utter silence.”
James watched the boy for another moment assessing him, before turning and making his way back onto the deck. “Smee, retrieve the fairy from my quarters. Be sure to keep her out of my wife’s sight, or I will stain the snow that has fallen on the deck red with your idiocy. Her behavior the past few days has been testament that she is not ready to fully grasp this world, and I shall not have her sent into another episode like she has suffered already.” Smee nodded, quickly heading up the stairs to the Captain’s Cabin. James walked to the railing looking out towards the horizon.
Smee knocked on the doors first taking off his hat, not wanting to be disrespectful or disturb Caitlin. There was no answer to invitation to enter. Smee carefully opened the door poking his head in looking about, “Miss Caitlin?” He called out not seeing her anywhere. Cautiously he stepped inside closing the door behind him, twisting his hat between his hands looking about again, slowly moving towards where he knew the empty lantern was kept. Pulling the cover back from the lantern he saw Aurora sitting boredly on her feather. Her wings fluttered and her eyes looked up hopefully, but she frowned seeing that it was not her Captain that let light into her small bedchamber.
“Come on, The Capt’n sent me to fetch you back to him.” Her eyes lit up and her wings started to flutter anxiously as she stood before the glass door clapping her hands. Once the first mate opened it she flew up hovering before his eyes wanting to be directed where she was to go. Just then he caught site of Caitlin asleep on the fainting couch not but a few feet away. Smee’s eyes went wide as he snagged the tiny purple glow into his hands looking about not sure where Caitlin was. Aurora squeaked at her captivity, giving a frown that she was still not allowed to roam free.
The nervous little old man turned heading for the door, escaping as quietly as possible trying not to wake the sleeping woman and get caught doing his task. He scurried down the stairs and over to his commander standing behind him. “ ‘ere she is Capt’n.” He said opening his hands releasing the small creature, who instantly flew into the Captain’s pocket peeking up at him curious as to what he had summoned her for.
“How is Caitlin.” Hook said still looking off into the distance. Aurora stuck out her lip pouting as he didn’t even seem to acknowledge her. Smee stepped forward smiling as cheerfully as possible.
“She’s asleep Capt’n, as soundly as can be. Lookin’ much better then she did a few days ago, if you don’t mind me sayin.” Hook rolled his eyes not wanting to hear his idiot first mates ‘opinion’ on anything at the moment. He had more important matters below decks to attend to for now. Smee followed his Captain taking a few other men with them as well, making their way down into the brig to see if they could find out what the Captain wished to know from the small lad.
Hook walked to the iron door, looking at the child huddled tightly in the corner. “Miss Sun” He said calling the small creature from his pocket as she hovered in front of his eyes. “Does this freckle faced offspring seem familiar to you in any way?” Aurora turned flying through the bars as she looked over the human she was supposed to identify. She recognized him instantly as the one who had been huddled up in Caitlin’s arms in the cave. Flitting back to the Captain’s ear she whispered confirmation into his ear before hurrying back to the warmth of his pocket not wanting to freeze to death in the winter weather.
“I see. Apparently you have taken some interest in the woman that your pompous young leader stole away from this ship.” Smee unlocked the door and pulled it open allowing the Captain himself entrance into the holding cell. Hook could feel himself being a bit territorial were Caitlin was concerned. He hated that anyone would approach or go near her without coming through him first.
“I do believe your fellow lost boys call you Red. No doubt for that gleaming tuff of hair that adorns your head.” He took a few steps closer looking down at the boy. Red looked up with wide eyes as the Captain that loomed over him like a large monster from one of Peter’s stories. His eyes moving back to his hook before looking up at his face again. James came down more to the child’s level crouching next to him. “You came here looking for her. Did you not?” Red still staring up at his captor with eyes as big as watermelons nodded slowly.
The Captain was much different when dealing with all other manner of life then he was with Caitlin. He was clever and quick witted, and always looked for an advantage. He saw one here in this boy and had every intention of pursuing it. “You do not speak very often do you.” He said noting that not a sound had come from this child since he was captured. Red just sat there starring up at him as quiet as could be. Hook’s teeth clinched together in annoyance for a moment before he regained his charming smile. “Well, I am certain that your band of rebel friends trade quite often. Therefore you know the rules of exchanging items or services. I have something that you want, you . . . my dear boy . . . have something that I want.”
Hook’s eyes shifted upwards, “Upstairs this very minute is the woman that you seek, sleeping and resting comfortably.” His eyes shifted back to the boy, “Perhaps she is even dreaming of you, wondering how you are, wishing she could see you again . . . in fact there is no doubt in my mind that she would be overflowing with pure joy at your presents.” The small boy forgot his fear for a moment as his eyes began to shine at the Captain’s words, and a small hopeful smile creased his lips. “Visitations could be arranged so that you would be free to spend time with her aboard the ship, when ever you would like. You could come and go as you pleased without fear of being caught or the need to hide from us.”
The boy started to uncurl looking excited at the possibility of him doing so, looking up with hopeful eyes. A knowing smile tugged at the corner of James mouth, now he was primed to hear the Captains proposition. “As you are the one that spirited that kindhearted woman away to a secret place none of your associates even thought to look in, I am under the distinct impression that you know of several more, secret hideaways on the island? Perhaps some even used by the lost boys and Peter Pan himself?” The boy looked down for a moment not sure of how he should answer, nor having any idea of where this was going. Slowly he nodded before looking up again.
“I would think that the locations of those special secret places, would be a small service indeed in exchange for my generous offer.” Red looked extremely hesitant about the offer made, it was clear that he could jump either way in his answer. He was going to need a little more incentive to see things the Captain’s way. “Have I mentioned, that she has this wonderful way of entertaining her guests? She has an extraordinary talent, to make sure there is not a dull or boring moment during the entire visit. Also, she has a certain taste for sweets. Therefore I have the ships cook make sure she has access to such treats at all times. I have no doubt she would anxiously share them with you.”
To be completely honest, the young one just wanted to be near her. To be able to sit in her lap and cuddle with her and have her hug him all she could. Like she did in the cave when they where hiding from the others. She was a friend of course, but she was so much more then that as well. He sat quietly turning over Hook’s offer in his mind. James narrowed his eyes slightly, “She is quite lovely is she not? Absolute happiness can be found just in being near her, as I am certain you noticed.”
That was the tiebreaker for the child. He nodded quickly letting the Captain know that he would tell him whatever he knew just as long as he could see the lady he had grown so fond of. Hook smiled at this, “Wonderful! Tomorrow we shall go ashore and you can show me the hidden keeps that you and your friends hide in, then we can make arrangements for your first visit with the lovely mistress of this ship.” Reaching his hand out, Red looked at it for a moment. This was the same agreement that the lost boys used when they made a trade and it was final. He spit into the palm of his hand and held it out. James winced slightly, how disgusting were these little Cretans that were supposed to be human children? Removing his glove he gave a slight smile before spitting in his own hand, offering it to the boy. Red grinned from ear to ear and smacked his hand into the Captain’s. Hook closed his eyes feeling the moisture between their two hands, feeling as if his skin would never be clean again. He could only imagine the germs and filth this child carried with him.
He gave a friendly smile as he opened his eyes, “Then we are agreed.” Hook removed his hand from the child’s spit laced paw. “Well, until tomorrow then.” The boy gave a nod and a satisfied smile as he crawled up into the bunk under the blanket to keep warm. The Captain stood finding himself feeling like his dignity was very much tainted, and desiring a bath more then anything. He and the other pirates left the brig going back up to the deck.
Smee had a very confused look on his face as he followed after his commander. “Uh Capt’n? Do you think the misses is gonna mind us takin the lad to shore like that?” James pulled his handkerchief from his pocket with his hook using it to clean his hand of the boys saliva.
“Caitlin is never going to know of any of this. I think that once the boy has guided us to all of Pan’s hideaways and secret passages that allow them to disappear before our eyes when we are in pursuit, he will have outlived his usefulness.” James tossed the handkerchief at his first mate, “Have that burned.” He said looking at his hand as perhaps Lady Macbeth did when the stains of blood would not come off her hands. “Disgusting” He muttered.
“But didn’t you just say . . .” Smee began but quickly quieted his words for fear of the Captain’s wrath for being questioned.
“I know what I said you putrid sack of useless and pathetic entrails. I have no intention of giving that youth a moment with my wife, when every minute of her life belongs to me. Did you honestly think I would let that filthy little beast into my cabin to take Caitlin’s attention, and perhaps even her affections? I should think not. He is one of them and he is an enemy. He will give us what we want, and I will assure him a proper burial and nothing more.” He smirked slightly the green-eyed jealousy monster leaping from his inner being. “If we have time unless of course, we are late for supper.”
His eyes shifted to his first mate, “Pick out our best sailors. Have them ready to go ashore first thing in the morning.” Smee nodded and gave acknowledgement he understood his orders before leaving the Captain to his thoughts. Hook smirked; finally back to his usual routine in this constant game of cat and mouse with Pan. With him and his pesky little firefly away from Neverland, he would have no problems with marking each place and plotting traps for when he returned.
“IF you do not stop that rather irritating fluttering I shall leave you tied to the mast during the next snow storm miss sun, and we shall have a fairy ice cycle to decorate the deck.” He growled breaking the silence. Looking down into his pocket for a moment as he saw the small little face pop out and look up at him smiling brightly he addressed her. “You my dear are going to accompany us ashore. You will be very useful in alerting us if any of your kin are about. We do not want them running back to Pan when he returns and spoiling our surprise.”
Aurora nodded quickly ready to do what ever he wished, and go where ever he beckoned her to. James gave a sigh as he turned looking towards his Cabin. He would have to return, there was nothing else to do and it was the absolute warmest place on the ship besides the galley. As the Captain of the Jolly Rodger he had no intentions of sleeping on their food supply during the night. It would simply not do at all. Shaking his head he started up the stairs, not anxious to face her after what had occurred between them.
