Chapter 30
RPOV
“So what did you have the taste for?” Adrian asked me as we started to leave the courtroom.“I don’t know. Surprise me.” I told him.“Well then I know the perfect place to take you. It’s not typically what you like to eat but the food is delicious and I promise it isn’t like the other ‘rich people’ food.” He told me with a smirk.“I trust you to know what I will and will not eat.” I told him as Priscilla Voda hurried over to Lissa.“The queen would like to meet with you before you leave. In private.”I glanced over the raised chair where the queen sat. Her gaze was fixed on the four of us, and I wondered what this could be about.“Sure,” Lissa said as confused as I was. To me, through the bound I know you and Adrian have plans but can you listen in again, please?I gave her a quick nod before Priscilla spirited off.“Rain check?” Adrian asked me already knowing Lissa’s request.“Thank you.” I said to him as I reached up to kiss him.We quickly made our way back to the apartment. I sat down on the couch tuning in to Lissa while Adrian went to pack up our bags. It took a while for Tatiana to finish a few of the courtroom formalities, but she arrived to the same room as yesterday. Lissa and Priscilla bowed as she entered and waited for the queen to sit.Tatiana made herself comfortable. "Vasilisa, you need to be in the air soon, so I'll make this brief. I would like to make an offer to you.""What kind of an offer, Your Majesty?""You'll need to go to college soon." She spoke like it was a done deal. And yeah, Lissa did plan on going to college, but I didn't like the presumption. "I understand you're dissatisfied with your choices.""Well...it's not that I'm dissatisfied, exactly. It's just, all the places Moroi are supposed to go are small. I mean, I understand it's for safety, but I don't know. I'd like to go somewhere bigger. Somewhere prestigious." Guardians monitored a handful of select colleges in the country so that Moroi could safely attend them. As Lissa had noted, though, they tended to be smaller schools.Tatiana nodded impatiently, like she already knew this. "I'm going to give you an opportunity that no one else has ever been given, to my knowledge. After graduation, I would like you to come live here, at the Royal Court. You have no family, and I think you'd benefit from learning politics right in the heart of our government. Along with this, we would make arrangements for you to attend Lehigh University. It's less than an hour from here. Have you heard of it?"Lissa nodded. I'd never heard of it, but she was enough of a nerd to have researched every college in the U.S. "It's a good school, Your Majesty. But... still small.""It's bigger than the ones Moroi usually attend," she pointed out."True." In her mind, Lissa was trying to puzzle out what was going on here. Why was Tatiana making this offer? Especially considering how she'd seemed to disagree with Lissa earlier. There was something weird going on here, and she decided to see how far she could push it. "The University of Pennsylvania isn't that far either, Your Majesty.""That school is enormous, Vasilisa. We couldn't ensure your safety there."Lissa shrugged. "Well, then it probably doesn't matter if I go to Lehigh or one of the others."The queen looked shocked. So did Priscilla. They couldn't believe Lissa seemed indifferent to the offer. Truthfully, Lissa wasn't indifferent. Lehigh was a step up from what she'd expected, and she wanted to go. But she also wanted to see how badly the queen wanted her to go.Tatiana frowned and appeared to be weighing matters. "Depending on your grades and experiences at Lehigh, we could possibly arrange for you to transfer in a couple years. Again, the safety logistics would be very difficult."Wow. The queen did want her around. But why? Lissa decided to simply ask."I'm very flattered, Your Majesty. And grateful. But why are you offering me this?"
"As the last Dragomir, you're a precious commodity. I'd like to make sure your future is secure. And I do so hate to see bright minds wasted. Besides..." She paused, hesitant to speak her next words. "You were right to a certain extent. The Moroi do have trouble changing. It could be useful to have a dissenting voice around here."Lissa didn't answer right away. She was still analyzing this offer from every possible angle. She wished I was there to advise her, but I wasn't sure I'd have much of an opinion."All right," she said at last. "I accept. Thank you, Your Majesty.""Excellent," said Tatiana. "We'll see that the arrangements are made. You may go now."The queen made no signs of moving, so Lissa bowed again and scurried to the door, still reeling with this news. Tatiana suddenly called out to her."Vasilisa? Will you send your friend here to talk to me? The Hathaway girl?""Rose?" she asked in astonishment. "Why do you-? Yes, of course. I'll get her."Pulling myself from Lissa’s head I stood up from the couch to prepare myself to leave.“All done?” Adrian as he came back into the room holding some of our bags that he had packed while I was in Lissa’s head.“Not quite. Your aunt would like to talk to me.” I told him nervously.“Really? Why?” Adrian said with a frown as he moved towards me.“I don’t know. She just told Lissa to tell me to come to her.”“Do you want me to go with you?” he asked a frown still marring his face.“No, I am a big girl I can handle this.”“If you say so.”Adrian pulled me into his arms before he allowed me to go and kissed me hard enough to bruise my lips and leave them swollen. Damn this man always would drive me crazy. If I wasn’t still out of commission I would take him right now, the queen be damned. “Okay little dhampir get out of here before I make a repeat of last nights performance.” He said pulling away from me and leaving me boneless and breathless. If it wasn’t for his arm around my waist I think I would have collapsed on to the floor.“Be back soon.” I told him giving him a quick peck when I recovered myself then removing myself from his arms. “Love you.”“Love you to my sweet rose.” He told me with a gentle smile.I met Lissa halfway between Adrian’s apartment and the queen’s residents.“What’s going on?” I asked her.“I have no idea.” Lissa said to me. “Did you hear what she said?”“Yup. Maybe she wants to tell me how I am to take extra care of you at that school.” I said with a roll of my eyes.“Maybe. I don’t know.” Lissa gave me a quick hug. “Good luck. I’ll see you soon.”I went to the same room and found Tatiana standing with her hands clasped, posture stiff and impatient. She was dressed like a corporate businesswoman again, with a sleek brown blazer and skirt set. That color I wouldn’t have been my first choice to go with her dark gray hair, but that was her style adviser’s problem, not mine.I bowed just as Lissa had and glanced around the room. Priscilla was gone; only a couple of guardians remained. I expected Tatiana to tell me sit, but instead, walked right over to me her face did not look happy.“Miss Hathaway,” she said sharply, “I am going to keep this brief. You are going to stop this atrocious affair you’re having with my great-nephew. Immediately.”Of all the things I expected her to talk about this was not it.“Excuse me?” I asked flabbergasted. Yes this woman was the queen but she wasn’t the dictator of my life or of Adrian’s."You heard me. I don't know how far things have gone, and honestly, I really don't want to know the details. That's not the point. The point is that it's going to go no farther."The queen was looking down on me, hands on her hips, clearly waiting for me to swear I'd do whatever she wanted.“Quite frankly it is none of your damn business even if you were to inquire about the extent of my relationship with Adrian. However far Adrian wants our relationship to go then that is where it is going. You may be the queen but you have no right to tell me who I can and cannot date.”“You insolent little girl.” She spat at me. “I have every right. I am the queen. I've heard all the illicit details about what's going on, and it is going to stop right here, right now. Adrian Ivashkov is not going to run off with some cheap dhampir whore, so you might as well rid yourself of that delusion right now."“I am under no delusion. Your nephew loves me just as much as I love him. And I very much plan on marrying him one day just as he does to me. I believe it is you that is under some delusion, thinking you have a say in who Adrian ends up with.” I spat at her.“You hold your tongue little girl,” She practically growled at me. “I know all about you. All anyone talks about are your recent reward and accolades. But I have not forgotten that it was you that took Vasilisa away. I also know about the trouble you used to get into- I know about the drinking, about the men. If it were up to me, I’d pack you up and send you off to some blood whore commune. You’d probably fit in well.”If she were any other woman I would beat the ever-loving shit out her. Even still I was tempted to do so. The drinking and the men? I have only been with one man in my life and that is her nephew. Sure I’ve partied some and had some drinks but I was never a roaring black out drunk to the point it become the focus of a conversation. And how dare she call me a bloodwhore! If this woman weren’t queen, I would be putting her in her grave. Before I could cut into her she spoke again, “Your recent achievements make sending you away impossible. Everyone believes you have some glorious future ahead of you. Maybe you do. Regardless if I can’t stop you being a guardian, I can affect whose guardian you are.”“Are you threatening me?” I asked her as I stiffened. I had no plan on being a guardian and no one besides those closes to me know that but the idea that she could use this over me and try to threaten me had me seeing more red than I was earlier. “You may be queen, but do not believe that just because I am young that I would take lightly your threats and inserting yourself into my love life with you nephew.” I told her with so much venom in my voice that I could see her guardians start to twitch in anticipation of taking me down before I could harm her. “There is nothing you can say or do to me that would make me leave your nephew. And for you to stoop so low as to threaten my career as guardian makes me think of you even less as a person and as a leader of our people. Take a good look at me Tatiana because this is the only face you will ever see sitting next to your nephew at every family dinner and in every holiday photo. This is the face that you will see smiling and shining happily next to his when you look at his wedding pictures. This is the face that you will see every time you look at one of his children. Because I’ll be damn if I let some old spiteful harpy dare dictate whom I will spend the rest of my life with. Take a long hard look because you will be seeing my face till you are rotting in your grave.”We were both glaring harshly at each other after my little speech. I could see she wanted nothing more than to strangle me to death but she wouldn’t stoop so low as to touch a dhampir whore, as she called me earlier.“If you will excuse me, your majesty,” I said the last part with much venom. “I believe you have delayed me long enough with this waste of time meeting.” I said leaving the room before she even had the chance to dismiss me.That woman could try as hard as she like but nothing she says or do is going to get in between Adrian and me.
