Chapter 27: Unexpected gift

It was late morning before Catti-brie awoke again. Yawning, she moved closer to the drow, and suddenly realised that he was still asleep – it had long been Drizzt’s custom to lay and watch her rest until she, too, woke up. She settled in his arms again, determined to not stir him, as she knew he had been extremely exhausted by the last night.

However, a frown suddenly passed her features, and she carefully lifted the blanket, glancing down on the mattress to see if her suspicions had been confirmed. Seeing they had not been, she changed her mind and carefully slipped out of the elf’s embrace. Yet, mere seconds passed after she had left his arms, before his eyelids slid back.

“Where are you going?” he asked, sitting up with a slight yawn, while Catti-brie pulled on shirt and leggings.

“I’ve just gotta see Stumpet fer a moment,” she said, then moved over to give him a light peck on the lips. “Won’t be long. Ye’d better get some more sleep.”

Before the drow could say anything, she was out of the door, walking down the hallways in the direction of the Healer’s hall. Her mind was a jumble of mixed feelings, but her heart was silently leaping with hope, and she prayed that her hope was true.

Stumpet looked up as Catti-brie entered, and a smile crossed the dwarf’s face.

“Somethin’ wrong, lass?” she asked, putting down her book to step over to the woman who sat down in one of the chairs.

“Aye. ‘Tis me period. ‘Tis five weeks since me last one, but I still haven’t gotten t’again…,” Catti-brie silently replied, looking up at the dwarf, who nodded in understanding.

“That can only mean two things, Catti. Either ye’re havin’ an abdominal decease, or ye’re pregnant. An’, most likely, ‘tis the latter, Stumpet said, her smile widening. “’T’ll only take a few minutes fer me ta determine, so ye just make yerself comfortable…”

Drizzt rubbed a hand over his eyes, then yawned and stretched. He was still tired, but oddly enough felt more alive than he had for days.

After a quick bath, he dressed and then changed the bedsheets – it seemed that they had made quite a mess the previous night.

But, as he pulled the cover off the mattress, he saw the corner of a book stick out from beneath the bed. Curious, he pulled the book out and sat down on the edge of the bed, running his hands over the blank leather cover. There was neither title, nor any other markings outstanding the book, though it seemed surprisingly well used.

Opening the book at the centre pages, he found a light blush creeping onto his cheeks. The illustration that met him was, to say the least, detailed and very vivid. His eyes drifted over the forms on the paper, then slipped to the text beside it, and he found that it was a detailed explanation of how the position shown could bring most pleasure to both participants.
And as he quickly flipped through the worn book’s pages, he found that it was, in lack of a better word, a detailed guide to pleasuring both males and females.

“No wonder Catti-brie seems to know so much..,” he muttered to himself, then found himself submerged in a meticulous description of where a woman’s most sensitive areas on the lower back were located.

Browsing through the pages, pausing every now and then to study one of the explanations or illustrations, he made a few mental notes of what he read for the next night, determined to return Catti-brie what she had shown him. At end, though, he snapped out of his reading and replaced the book, then proceeded to finish the bed. He had barely managed to place the last pillow on the mattress, before his lover returned, wearing a broader smile than he had seen in a long time.

“What has happened?” he asked in curiosity, turning to fully face the woman.

She leaped at him, and he, surprised, caught her in his arms as she wrapped both her own around him in a hug that would make a bear jealous.

“I’m pregnant..,” she replied, looking up at him with such joy shining in her eyes that none of the stars could outshine her.

Wulfgar and Bruenor both paused as they heard to howl of joy echo through the hallway. Surprised, they pushed open the door from which it came and saw both Drizzt and Catti-brie in there, hugging each other and both laughing happily as they almost danced around the room.

“You think it’s infectious..?” Wulfgar asked, looking at the dwarf, who merely shrugged.
