James entered into his cabin, finding that Caitlin had fallen asleep just as Smee said. It seemed she hadn’t stirred even an inch since the doctor was here, his eyes narrowed at the possibility of her having been sedated again. The first time the doctor had done so without asking permission to give her such pharmaceuticals, he felt as if he could rip the mans guts out for performing such a deed. Why he felt a deep sense of territorialism where Caitlin was a mystery in itself, for he could not remember ever feeling the same about another female.
Aurora’s small head poked out of the Captain’s pocket looking around before looking up at him. She saw his gaze was cast away from her, and followed it to see what he was looking at. Her eyes narrowed to see that sleeping human woman capturing her Captain’s eye yet again. It simply wasn’t fair, why couldn’t he be hers and hers alone? Why did she have to be locked up and hidden away because this over grown china doll couldn’t understand the things that went on in Neverland.
Hook walked over looking down for a moment at Caitlin’s sleeping form. Reaching for her he scooped her up into his arms holding her firmly against his chest, as he walked towards their bed, thinking it would be much more comfortable for her there. Aurora was suddenly squished between the Captain’s chest and Caitlin’s arm, and she squeaked uncomfortably not wanting to me smashed into a memory. Her head was still out of the Captain’s pocket, and she growled before sinking her small teeth into the flesh of Caitlin’s wounded arm.
Cat’s cried out as her eyes flew open, gasping her arm. James frowned looking down at her, “Caitlin? What is it, what is wrong?” He questioned worriedly, moving faster and setting her down on the bed. Caitlin was still half asleep and rubbed at her arm just below her bandage. “I am sorry my love, I did not mean to move you so roughly.” He said reaching up placing his hands on hers.
Caitlin continued to rub her arm feeling as if something very sharp had pinched or stabbed her tender skin. James sighed as he watched her still having the guilt of his actions looming over him like a large black rain cloud. He turned his eyes away from her trying to find any word that he could say that would ease the tension he felt there was between them in the shadow of events that took place earlier. At once, he caught sight of a cloth wrapped packages that rested on the bedside table. Perfect! From the few times he bothered with the actual procedures of courtship in his younger years he learned quickly how women responded to gifts they were given.
“Caitlin, I have something I wish to give you.” He said reaching over with his hook catching the ties that bound the gift, brining it back to her lap. Cat looked at it curiously, wondering what it could be. “Before you open it Caitlin . . . I wish you to know something.” He began as he reached up placing his good hand over hers. “I have said many . . . cruel and unkind things to you in a fit of anger and rage that would have lost a man his life . . . had I heard the words pass his lips towards you.” Cat turned her eyes up to her Captain as she continued to list. She could see he was back once more to the caring and gentle man she had come to know. “I do not ask you to forgive me for the things I have done, nor can I promise they will not happen again. I have such rage and a manner of doing things that . . . . I may only pray and home that one day you can find it in your heart to . . .” James closed his eyes and shook his head. The words he had tried to find where not the ones he wanted and they sounded foolish to his own ears. “Open your gift my dear, I think it is something you will enjoy.”
Caitlin smiled a little, not completely understanding what he had attempted to tell her but was trying her best. Although it seemed he wished to push it aside and change the subject now. There was nothing she could do but let him escape. Reaching up she pulled one of the ties that fastened the cloth around the package. As it’s wrapping fell away, her eyes lit up seeing the design on the cover of the leather bound book. The pure gold lettering adorning the cover amidst the carved designs of flowers elegantly spelled out her new name.
Hook felt a deep sense of satisfaction at the joy that appeared in her eyes. It was curious to him that she took such pleasure in writing her thoughts and feelings, and anything else her imagination concocted down on paper. It was a simple enjoyment that he had no problems with encouraging and allowing. Slowly she opened the cover finding an inscription had been written on the first page of the album. James suddenly felt embarrassed forgetting that he had written on the first page. “I think it is about time to retire for the evening my dear.” Hook said giving her knee a pat and leaving her alone to read his words. Cat turned her eyes back to the page and began to read;
“A gift to my beautiful wife who brings light in to the darkness of my life. For the words and thoughts she wishes to keep safe and hidden from all the world. My this be a small token of my love, and some small happiness.”
~Jas. Hook~
Cat smiled a bit running her hand over the page. It was the first gift he had ever given her, and she couldn’t think of a more wonderful gift he could have given. Carefully she closed the cover, and ran her fingers over the smooth leather once more.
James moved towards the empty glass lantern. Reaching into his pocket he retrieved the small fairy between two fingers, putting the creature in her quarters locking the latch securely. Hook narrowed his eyes at her, finding her small fairy face beaming up at him. There was a nagging thought in the back of his mind that she had been up to something. “We have an early day ahead of us tomorrow Miss Sun. I would suggest you make use of the few hours you have before morning.” He snapped before pulling the cloth back over the glass that hid her from view. As he walked away from her, he found the familiar sound of his mumbling to himself had returned once more, “I grow ever weary of your constant presence in my quarters. I can feel your eyes upon me, I can hear your fluttering during the night, and your smile. . . irritates me. It tis a wonder Caitlin has not yet discovered you with all the racket you make.”
Caitlin had gotten up from their bed and made her way to James desk, in his office area of the cabin. Carefully she placed her new journal in a safe place, not wanting it to get lost are harmed in anyway. She couldn’t resist sitting down in his chair and looking over the beautiful craft work once more and touching the raised letters that spelled her name.
James saw her and stopped, watching for a moment. Even in the torn dress she wore, and the new white bandage that kept her wound clean and dry, she was a goddess to his eyes. “Caitlin, you need your rest darling.” He said softly walking to her taking her hand. Cat looked up at him and smiled softly submitting to his entreaties going with him. They had been together long enough that she was well accustomed to the routine that preceded their retiring. Letting go of his hand she went into her own closet closing the door behind. Finding a nightgown she changed hanging up her dress that would have to be repaired now that the sleeve had been ruined. She took her hair down and brushed it out letting it drape about her shoulders.
While she was looking in the mirror she noticed a small red mark on her arm where she had felt the pinch or poke earlier. She sighed on closer inspection as it seemed to be a bite of some sort. A small bug must have decided it wanted to see what she tasted like and took it’s chance. There were so many feelings and thoughts she had to sort out going through her mind. Finally she put down her brush and blew out the light. Taking a deep breath she left the closet. Looking about she caught sight of James. He looked upset and frustrated with whatever thoughts plagued his mind as he worked to disrobe.
Caitlin watched him for a moment in silence before silently closing the door behind her. Quietly she moved to where she could see him better. He looked exhausted, worn, and weary enough that he could sleep for the better part of a month were he not disturbed. He started to struggle slightly with his vest, his fingers missing the buttons that he intended to release becoming more and more frustrated with the unusual difficulty he was having tonight. Caitlin appeared beside him looking up at him for a moment. James turned suddenly slightly surprised to see her there when he hadn’t heard her enter, halting his movements.
A moment in time seemed to freeze as she reached up slowly putting her hand on his arm as she walked around to face him. Carefully she began to unclasp the buttons that he’d been struggling with, pushing the cloth back off of his shoulders, and catching it to fold it before she put it aside. The Captain just watched her in silence, not fully understanding why she was still willing to do this for him after all that he had done and she had witnessed today.
Cat continued on with her task, removing his sash and putting it with the rest of his clothing, returning to him as she pulled the ties of his undershirt and gently removed that as well. She was beautiful, so beautiful. Mysterious in her ways, and generous with her kindness that she seemed willing to share with every living creature. James suddenly felt very awkward about letting her do this, and reached up with his good hand placing it over one of hers against his chest. “Caitlin . . .” he said softly, “You do not have to . . .”
“But I want to James.” Cat’s eyes gazed into his a moment, “I want to.” She said softly, reaching for the hem of his shirt and removing it, putting it with his other clothes. Most women he had come into contact with, the ones who were not paid escorts or were familiar with his reputation and quivering with fear, were easily turned away. They would stop speaking, avoid having to see him if they could, and just in general turn into very unpleasant human beings to be near. Caitlin was so much different, so much more kind and gentle then any other he had known. Perhaps because she didn’t always think of herself first, and most times held other in a much higher regard.
When she had finished removing his hook and the harness that bound it in place, he placed his hand to her cheek, gently caressing her warm soft flesh with his thumb. Hook slowly began to draw her closer but Caitlin pulled away from his hand picking up his articles of clothing, and disappearing for a moment to put them in their proper place. This was something that was a complete shock to him, she hadn’t reacted in such a way to his advances for quite sometime. It felt as if they were back to square one.
Caitlin returned a few moments later, walking to him again as she gently moved him to sit down on the bed, pulling off each of his boots and setting them aside. James just watched her in silence, as if he was witnessing some horrible nightmare that he had no control over. The brief vision he had suffered when Smee fetched him to the galley seemed to become real, as she looked and acted in the same manner a maid did. Honestly, he had no desire to yell at or scold her about it this time.
She stood again and turned to leave him once again but he caught her arm gently bringing her back to him. He said nothing, just wrapped his arms around her pulling her close looking up at her. A definite questioning and regret in his eyes to see her behave towards him in such a way. Caitlin looked down at him and tenderly placed her hands on either side of his face, running her fingers back through his hair. James closed his eyes the feel of her touch still sending him into a state of bliss and peace that he could never reach before he brought her back from the mortal world.
Reaching up he wrapped his hand about her wrist careful not to hurt her or frighten her, “Caitlin please do not pull away from me. Please.” He said in a half pleading voice, turning his face into the palm of her hand holding it to his cheek. “Please my love.” Cat looked down at him for a few moments, she was very apprehensive about being near him right now. Slowly she turned his face back up to look at hers.
“You have an early morning tomorrow James, you need your rest.” She whispered softly continuing to run her fingers through his hair. Hook opened his eyes looking up at her, not sure how on earth she knew that and worried slightly about how much information she had on their venture. Cat whispered softly, “I heard you talking to one of your crewmen, telling them to get rest after you gave me my present.” Hooks brow furrowed slightly at this. It had been no crewmen he spoke to but the little imp he kept locked away in her glass chamber. He recalled referring to her by name as well, but Caitlin didn’t seem to question that, if she had heard it at all.
“Why do you have an early day tomorrow, James? Are you going to shore?” She continued to speak softly as she looked down into his eyes, her fingers tracing and caressing through his locks of hair.
“Why do you ask my love.” He said softly, not really anxious to go into the details surrounding his venture that was planned. Caitlin looked down a moment as if a little bit nervous about what she was about to say.
“I . . . would like to go with you, and the men . . . if you are going back to the island.” She whispered. James eyes narrowed for a moment, as there were countless reasons he could not allow her to return to shore with them. The guide he had come across being the main one.
“Why on earth would you want to do such a thing? The few visits that you have had to the island have ended up in disaster, and misfortune. There is nothing there for you.” Caitlin looked down staying quiet for a moment before letting her hands rest on his shoulders choosing her words carefully.
“When I was captured by Peter Pan and his gang of lost boys, they were all out for my blood. They would have liked nothing better then to have tried out different methods of torture until one of them was successful. All of them, except one.” James continued to listen even though he dreaded to hear her stories conclusion. “This small boy with light skin like mine with countless freckles, red hair, and green eyes cut my binds and helped me to escape to the cave that you found me in. Seeing the way those boys acted and the value they placed on each others lives or anyone else’s, that boy risked a lot to help me and to save me from his brothers.” Taking a breath she whispered gently, “I want to see him again James, I want to make sure that he was alright and find a way to repay him for saving my life.”
Hook’s eyes narrowed slightly as he looked up at her, wanting to go to shore to consort with lost boys? “Absolutely under no circumstances are you going ashore. I absolutely forbid it!” He said sternly making it crystal clear. “I will not have you on that spit of land for any amount of time, by yourself or with any other! The few times you have gone ashore I was lucky to get you back to the safety of the Jolly Rodger! You must be mad to think I would allow you to venture off to shore again!” Caitlin frowned not expecting such an enormous rejection of her request. Removing his hands from his shoulders taking a step back.
“But . . . James it’s just for one day and he’s such a small boy. Please, you must let me go ashore and find him, he saved my life. He might be endanger himself if he was found out.” James shook his head smacking his hand against his thigh in annoyance as he stood.
“But NOTHING! I forbid you to go! A small boy or not their numbers tend to make up for their lack of size. Or do you not remember your captivity of just last week!” He paced a few steps not believing his ears as he turned back to her, “It is freezing outside! This is one of the worst winters we have had to endure and it will not let up until Peter Pan returns from whatever flight of fancy he decided to take off on. Do you want to catch your death!?! A little practicality is in order my young wife, and it seems to me that you do not have an ounce of it!”
Caitlin took another step back, afraid that another episode of their argument was imminent. Hook saw the look of fear in her eyes and took a deep breath before walking over to her reaching out and taking her hand. He wrapped his bad arm around her and guided her back to the bed feeling her apprehension making her body ridged and unwilling to move. He sat her down and sat beside her looking into her eyes speaking as gently as possible. “I have work to do ashore Caitlin, I have to go. You have an injury that needs time to heal and your body needs that chance to build up its strength. Going out in the cold for any reason is simply, not wise. If you wish I can call the surgeon up here and he can explain it to you.” His last words he said unconsciously through his teeth, as it seemed he still held ill will against the ships doctor for what he had seen.
“But James, what about that child. What if he’s in trouble?” she whispered softly looking into Hook’s eyes. He shook his head, knowing that this was bound to happen. She held an attachment to the boy, like the attachment a child would have to a puppy that followed them home. It was better that they would be done with the boy and he would no longer be a worry after tomorrow.
“He has many bothers Caitlin, they will look after him. I’m certain he’s quite safe. Even they would not stoop so low as to mame one so young as he.” Caitlin nodded a moment before pausing looking up at him.
“How did you know he was so young?” She whispered looking into his eyes. James paused a moment looking up at her, unsure of what he had just said and afraid it would give away that he had seen the boy and in fact held him in the cell’s below.
“You said he was a young boy, did you not?” He questioned trying to make his excuse to escape the bind he had put himself in. Caitlin shook her head looking up at him.
“No, I said he was small.” She said softly looking at him. “I just meant small in his stature.”
“Well my dear it is an honest mistake. When one says small, one automatically thinks it applies to age as well as size. Forgive me, he is an older boy then?” He said trying to keep a look of oblivion on the situation in his eyes. What ever hope had sparked in Caitlin’s chest at his words quickly died away as her eyes moved downcast and she shook her head slowly.
There was a great sense of relief deep in James chest at his successful escape from the truth, but he dare not show it. “It is well past time to retire Caitlin, come.” He said moving to lay down in the bed, as she moved to lay with him and he pulled the blankets up over them. Resting her head on his chest and closing her eyes, James ran his fingers through her strawberry blonde golden curls. He had lied to her once again, and he could not escape the guilt that came with lying to her.
Tomorrow he would take the boy ashore and he would point out every last one of Pan’s little hideaways, then they would leave him somewhere he could not escape where he would meet his doom. That way if the subject ever came up again, he could honestly tell Caitlin he did not kill the boy. The elements brought on by Pan’s absence were responsible.
However, he was completely oblivious that Caitlin had been thinking long and hard and had come to a decision as well. It seemed that his denying her permission to leave the ship and go ashore only cemented her intentions.
