I got nothing, so enjoy the story!
We arrived at school in record time. Homeroom had just started.
“Mr. Hale, Mr. Hill… You’re late,” the teacher said.
“Sorry, sir,” I quipped, “but Jasper here was my ride, and he ran late this morning.” Jasper glared at me, hands on his hips and eyebrow raised. I bit my lip to keep from laughing at the hilarity of this particular look, but my classmates didn’t have the same discretion. There were giggles from the girls…and a few sighs.
“He looks so cute,” one of them whispered.
“I know. And Jasper doesn’t look bad, either,” another muttered. To say I was surprised would be an understatement.
“Place the blame on me, huh?” Jasper asked, a small smile lifting the corner of his mouth.
“Yep,” I popped the p.
He folded his arms across his chest. “I’m not the one who took so long in the shower.” My skin crawled with embarrassment as every eye turned on me. I think I heard a shocked gasp or two.
“I was out when you arrived. And I didn’t take that long…” I didn’t know how many people knew we were staying in the same house, but I wasn’t going to just blurt it.
Our teacher cleared his throat.
“You two weren’t very late, so take your seats quickly.”
“Thank you, sir,” we said simultaneously. I laughed and swung myself into my seat.
I sat quietly for the short class time and contemplated the past day.
It didn’t feel like it had only been one day. I ran the events through my head: Jasper’s distance, Mike’s kiss, the fight with Edward, the clearing—I had to calm my body’s reaction as certain ‘events’ ran across my mind—the talk with Edward, about Edward, and this morning. A lot of drama for one day, if you ask me.
Someone was tapping my arm. I shook my head to clear it and looked around for the culprit. Mike was standing beside me, staring at his feet.
The bell had rung, so everyone was filing out. Jasper stood nearby, watching Mike with an angry glint in his eyes.
“I’m sorry about yesterday,” Mike mumbled.
“It’s all right,” I relented. “Just don’t do it again.”
He nodded, but he seemed to want to say something else.
“And I won’t tell anyone what happened, if that makes you feel better.”
He looked up and gave me a small smile and a tentative, “Thanks.”
I nodded, not smiling, and left the room with Jasper.
“Were you late for the reason I think you were late?” Bella questioned when I took my seat beside her.
“What reason would that be?” I replied. She blushed and I held my breath until it dissipated. “No, actually, I was just…teasing.”
“Oh.”
“We almost skipped, but…” I paused because my throat was burning badly. I held my breath; it abated slightly, but it still hurt.
“But what?”
“Don’t breathe,” Edward whispered, lips barely moving as he spoke. “Try and focus on something else.”
I thought of Jasper and how the morning could have gone. The burning ceased, but now I had a hard-on. I leaned over the table, propping my elbows to hide it.
“Could you think of something else?” Edward sounded pained.
“Sorry,” I murmured, embarrassed. If I could blush, I’d be beet red. As soon as I thought of something besides Jasper, the scorching thirst returned.
I was left with a decision: Would I rather deal with a hard-on all day or literally feel the burn?
I caught a glimpse of Edward’s expression. Burn it is. I didn’t feel like upsetting Edward, not when he and Jasper still need to talk.
Still, I focused away from the pain that threatened to close my throat and force me to attack.
I must not have been hiding it, because the teacher stopped the lecture.
“Mr. Hill, are you all right?”
“I feel like I’m going to be sick,” I lied faintly. I had to get out of there.
“Then, by all means, you may leave. Mr. Cullen, would you escort him, please?”
Edward nodded and led me from the room with a hand on my shoulder.
We went to the restroom, which was thankfully empty. I locked the door and leaned against it.
The burning cooled, but it didn’t disappear.
Edward scrutinized my appearance.
Sighing, he said, “The first weeks are the hardest here. It gets a little easier, but you can go home if you need to.”
I nodded. “Thanks. I’m going to try to stay.”
“You can go home.”
“I know.”
He shuffled his feet and shifted his gaze from me to the floor. “What does Jasper want to talk about?” he asked quietly.
“Yesterday.”
“We already talked.”
“But it’s not resolved.” He almost spoke, but I held up a hand to stop him. “And that’s all I’m saying on the matter. It’s not my problem to solve. You and Jasper can talk at my house. I’ll leave to give you some privacy.”
He looked at me, then, with eyes widened in shock. “Why are you—”
“I don’t like seeing Jasper in pain. Talking this through should help.” I intentionally hardened my gaze to let him know my sincerity. “Unless Jasper tells me he doesn’t want me anymore, I will be the only one to take him. Understand?”
He gulped, but nodded solemnly.
“I could never separate true mates,” he said quietly.
Not knowing what else to say, I turned to go. “I’m going back to class. I think I’ll be fine.”
“You need some kind of distraction. It helps.”
“I have one. The burn leaves when I think about Jasper.”
“What do you mean ‘it leaves’?”
“It’s gone, like it was never there.” I flipped the lock on the door. “You may want to ignore my thoughts from now on.”
:) Not much going on in this chapter... Sorry.
elvinwitch--Not exactly...
Anonia--Thank you! I'll try. :)
Song of Time--Yeah, but robots can't bleed and blood is needed for the change, so... No. But thanks for the input. :)
Gaps of Misery--Yeah, me too, but a little frustration makes the next time all that much better. ;) And I think the jellyfish is a great idea, too, but...um...that would make Whitaker a jellyfish, and...well...have you ever seen a vampire jellyfish?
