“Morning, lazy bones,” Paul greeted Jacob as he came out of his bedroom and into the kitchen. “Since when did you start sleeping till two in the afternoon?”
Jacob shrugged and poured himself a bowl of cereal. “I’m tired, okay? Besides, I didn’t sleep the whole night.” He rubbed his lower belly gingerly before sitting down at the table. “Liam is a really good cook, but I think he fed me something bad last weekend.”
“Feeling sick?” Paul asked, sitting down beside him with a bag of chips.
“Sort of,” Jacob answered. “I’m not nauseous or anything, but I had bad stomach cramps last night.”
“Weird….” Paul shrugged off the information.
“Dad visiting Sue again?”
“Yep.”
Jacob sighed and started inhaling his breakfast. It amazed him how much Paul had mellowed after meeting and imprinting on Jacob’s sister Rachel. Over half the pack had now done something that was supposedly rare.
Jacob finished his cereal and washed the dish in the sink. “I’m gonna go to the beach and get some air.”
“Bye,” Paul said, and got up to move to the living room.
Jacob shook his head and walked down to the beach where Quil was playing with Claire, the cute three-year-old girl he’d imprinted on. “Heard you had a wild weekend,” Quil greeted him with a warm smile.
“Yeah….” Jacob chuckled. “I learned how to clean bloodstains off a carpet and fix furniture with superglue.”
Quil laughed and shook his head. “You know, Jake, sometimes I envy you.”
“Have you ever thought of dating until, you know, she’s old enough?” Jacob asked curiously.
Quil paused for a moment. “No, not really. None of the girls really interest me anymore.”
Jacob nodded. “I know what you mean. I only have eyes for my psychotic nymphomaniac.”
He plopped down in the sand and joined Quil and Claire in collecting colored stones from the sand. It wasn’t long before they heard a distinct howl in the distance. “I guess we’d better go,” Jacob said as he stood and dusted off his shorts.
Quil looked a little worried. “I don’t know where her mom is. What do I do?”
Jacob thought a moment. “You could take her to the Clearwaters’. My dad is there with Sue again. They can watch her. I’ll tell Sam you’re on your way.”
“Good idea.” Quil nodded and picked up Claire in his arms to carry her.
Jacob headed in the opposite direction to where Sam was waiting. He ran until he was well away from roads and people before taking off his shorts and rolling them up to tuck into a black leather cord around his ankle.
Phasing was second nature to him now. He didn’t have to think about it. But this time was different. Instead of turning into a huge red wolf, he fell flat on his face, the forest spinning around him. “What the—” he wondered out loud, and climbed to his feet. He shook his head, focused, and tried a second time, but the same thing happened.
Cursing under his breath he got up again put his shorts back on. Then he did the only thing he could think of: he headed to Sue Clearwater’s house at a run. There was no way he’d make it to where Sam was waiting in a reasonable amount of time in human form, and he wouldn’t be able to hear the pack in that case anyway.
Quil, on his way to Sam after dropping off Claire, met Jacob on the way and shifted back to human form. “What’s wrong?” he asked, concern written on his face. “Why haven’t you phased yet? And what happened to your face?”
Jacob reached up to feel his face and found a few bleeding scratches. He didn’t want to tell his friend what had really happened, but he figured Sam would need to know. “I can’t phase.”
“You what?” Quil’s eyes went wide. “Are you serious?”
“No, I’m making it all up,” Jacob replied sarcastically. Before he could say anything else his stomach cramped again and he doubled over in pain.
“Jake, are you okay?” Quil rushed to his side. Jacob tried to answer, but the world around him went blurry and then black.
When he opened his eyes again he was on Sue Clearwater’s couch, and Sue, Billy, and Quil were standing over him. “Oh, man, you scared me,” Quil said.
“Son, are you all right?” Billy asked.
“I…I think so,” Jacob answered tentatively. He tried to sit up but he was still a bit dizzy, so he leaned against the back of the couch. “I’m just not having a good day. What about Sam?”
“Don’t worry about that,” Quil assured him. “I let the pack know what was going on before I brought you back here.”
“What exactly happened?” Billy asked.
“I went to phase and face-planted instead,” Jacob said, frustrated all over again upon the re-telling. “I tried it a second time to be sure I hadn’t just done something wrong, but the same thing happened, so I gave up and headed back here. Then when I met Quil in the woods, the stomach cramps came back.”
Billy crossed his arms and sat back in his wheelchair. “I hate to say it, but maybe all that venom being pumped into you is starting to do some damage.”
“But why now?” Jacob asked. “It’s been almost a year, and everything was fine this morning. I even asked Carlisle to run a bunch of tests, and he said it wasn’t staying in my system or anything.”
“I don’t know, but something is definitely wrong. This is one of those times I wish I could take you to a doctor.”
Jacob nodded and sat up a little more. “I guess to be on the safe side I’ll tell Liam not to bite me any more when we—I’ll tell him not to bite me anymore.”
“You do that,” Billy nodded.
Sue brought Jacob some soup and they sat with him and watched TV until Sam came by to see Jacob. “Are you all right?” Sam asked, taking a seat on the couch beside Jacob.
Jacob groaned. He was growing tired of everyone asking him that. “I feel okay now. Why did you call us, anyway?”
“Edward and Bella are back. The official story is that Bella is sick with some South American illness. Edward won’t let Charlie see her.”
“Oh.” Jacob bit his lip. “I wonder why Liam didn’t call me. Have you decided anything?”
Sam shook his head. “It looks bad, but we don’t have any official proof. That, and it’s not exactly as if Bella is an innocent victim in this. I’m not really sure what I want to do.”
Jacob nodded in understanding. “I can find out.” Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his cell phone and dialed Liam’s number. “Hey, can I come over for a bit?” he asked when Liam answered. “Okay, see you in a few.”
He closed the phone and put it back in his pocket. “He said I could come over. Maybe that’s a good sign. If Bella was a bloodthirsty monster they wouldn’t want me around her.”
“Let’s hope you’re right. But are you well enough to go over?”
“I think so,” Jacob answered, doing a quick check of himself. “I feel fine now.”
“All right. Let me know what you find out,” Sam said, and he too got up to leave.
Since Jacob couldn’t phase, he had to walk home and get his car; he didn’t quite trust himself to ride his bike that far after everything that had happened. He wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but the thought that Bella could be a vampire now sat like a massive stone in the pit of his stomach. And worse yet, why hadn’t Liam called him?
Everything seemed quiet and normal when he pulled into the Cullens’ driveway. Liam was waiting on the porch. “Hi there, sexy,” the blond vampire grinned.
Jacob frowned at him. “It’s been four days. Why didn’t you call me? You could have at least let me know Edward and Bella were back.”
Liam glanced back toward the interior of the house. “You looked exhausted when you left. I wanted to give you some time to recover. That, and I’ve been a little distracted with family stuff. I’m sorry, I should have called.”
“She did it, didn’t she?”
“No.” Liam shook his head. “It’s exactly as I thought—well, sort of….”
Jacob studied his mate for a moment. Liam wasn’t lying, so what was the major complication? “Then why can’t Charlie see her?”
Liam bit his lip. “I guess you might as well know. She’s pregnant, Jake.”
“What?” Of all the possible scenarios that had been running through his head, this hadn’t been one of them.
“I know, it was a shock for us too. No one ever really thought about it because there have only been like two cases of this in the past four hundred years. But of course, leave it to Bella….” He chuckled ruefully and shook his head.
“Where is she? I want to see her,” Jacob demanded.
Liam motioned for Jacob to follow him inside. The whole family was gathered around a couch where Bella was curled up under a blanket. Edward was beside her, stoic and unreadable.
“Jacob!” Bella smiled up at him, but it wasn’t the smile he remembered. She was thinner, her face sallow-looking.
Jacob’s whole body went numb. “So it’s true?”
Bella nodded and pulled down the blanket to reveal a noticeable bulge in her belly. “Isn’t it weird?”
“You have no idea.” Jacob swallowed hard. “Bells, it’s only been three weeks. How—?”
“It’s growing fast,” Edward explained in a flat tone. He was clearly upset, and Jacob almost felt sorry for him.
“Edward, please,” Bella huffed. They’d apparently already argued about this many times. She turned her attention back to Jacob. “He is growing really fast, but I can handle it.”
“Are you sure?” Looking at her, Jacob could understand why Edward was so worried. It seemed like the thing growing inside her was sucking the life out of her. There was a reason normal pregnancies took a long time.
“Of course I’m sure. It’s going to be difficult, but Liam is taking really good care of me.”
“Which reminds me,” Liam said as he headed toward the door, “I need to go check the mail.” He was only gone for a second and returned with a large package. “Good, they came.”
“How are you taking care of her?” Jacob asked distractedly. “And what’s in the box?”
“The answer to both questions is ‘druid medicine’,” Liam replied as he set the box on the coffee table and briskly went about opening it. “As much as he would like to, my brother can’t help her.” Liam turned to Jacob and tilled his head. “The better question would be, why is your color off? Werewolves don’t get sick.”
“Oh, that.” Jacob ran a hand through his shaggy hair and turned to Carlisle. “I can see you already have your hands full, and I really don’t want to be a bother, but could you run a few more tests on me?”
Carlisle gave him a soft smile. “It’s really not a bother. Is something wrong?”
Jacob switched his gaze back and forth between Bella and Liam. He didn’t want to worry either of them, but he wouldn’t know what was wrong with him if he didn’t say something. “I’ve been feeling a little…off. I’ve been having stomach cramps and a little dizziness. My dad is worried it might be the venom. I told him it probably wasn’t, but he’ll worry anyway until I get a clean bill of health from you.”
“Jake, what’s really going on?” Liam confronted him. “You’re hiding something.”
Jacob let out a heavy sigh. “Okay, fine: I can’t phase either. When I tried, the cramps came back and I passed out.”
“That sounds serious.” Bella frowned. Edward looked like he was trying not to smile.
“I doubt it’s anything serious,” Jacob tried to assure Bella. The last thing she needed was to worry about him. “You just worry about your own health. I mean it, Bells. You probably shouldn’t even be going through with this.”
He could tell right away he’d upset her. She wrapped her arms protectively around her belly and looked him straight in the eye. “What would you do?”
He wanted to tell her he’d get rid of it, but the words wouldn’t come out of his mouth. “I don’t know” was all he could say. “But I should be getting back. The others will want to know.”
“Just come by the hospital tomorrow morning,” Carlisle instructed. “I’ll draw some blood and take a look at it.”
“Okay.” Jacob nodded. “See you then.” He kissed Liam’s cheek and headed back out to his car. He had to sit for a minute and digest everything he’d just learned. Bella was pregnant, with who knew what growing inside her. He trusted the Cullens, but there was no telling how Sam was going to take this news.
