A/N: I know zebras probably aren’t known in Icewind Dale.. But Bruenor’s comment seemed to fit ctlyctlyctly that I decided to keep it.
I’m sorry about the late update, but plotbunnies decided to go and get some milk. Last thing I heard from them was a postcard saying “greetings from Jupiter”…
Chapter 28: When things don''t go the way you wanted them to
Drizzt’s fingers fiddled nervously with the box in his pocket. It had been almost a week since they all had found out about Catti-brie’s pregnancy – Bruenor had, of course, yelled and cursed for a while, claiming that the child would come out looking like a zebra with pink hair, but they all knew the dwarf was overjoyed with the thought of seeing Catti-brie with her own family.
And therefore, Drizzt had finally managed to get himself worked up for asking her the one question he knew would change his life for eternity. And since it was practically impossible to find anywhere suitable within the mines, he had asked her to meet him here, at Bruenor’s Climb. And, of course, she was late…
His nervousness did not decrease the least when he realised she should have met him thirty minutes ago. Though it was night, the stars were out as well as the full moon, and both lit the Dale enough for anyone to find their way. And, the human woman had been raised in the Dale, and should not have any problems finding her way to this spot. Unless she had encountered trouble, that was…
Cursing whatever goddess of luck looking at him at the moment, he started running down the high hill, forcing his eyes into the infrared spectrum as his feet found the familiar footholds on the rocks. The world immediately exploded into a multitude of colours, ranging from a cool white to a warm, almost black red. And, off to the side of the hill, he spotted an all-too-familiar shape. Not truly thinking, he leaped off the path, fell the fifteen feet to the ground to land in a run, and rushed over to his beloved’s side.
“I be okay, Drizzt. Just a sprained ankle,” Catti-brie said, smiling at him as she held around the wounded limb with her hands. “Ye be all right yerself? Looked like a mighty bad jump ye made.. Ain’t workin’ if ye be hurtin’ yerself too.”
A relieved sigh escaped the drow, and only then did he realise his feet and legs were hurting from his landing, and suddenly found himself laughing at the absurdity of the situation.
“Come on, dear. We’d better get yock,”ck,” he said, once he regained his breath, and lifted Catti-brie up in his arms.
His request had to wait, he knew, even though he wondered if he would manage to work up the nerve again within any near future. Despite his love for the woman, despite his knowledge that all within the mine greatly supported the wedding – as would many other of his friends, he knew – he still lay under old habits concerning which type of elf he originated from. And even if that had not been a question, he knew deep in his heart that he was concerned about attaching himself too closely with his beloved – and be forced to watch her grow old and die while he remained young.
“Luv? Somethin’ be botherin’ ye?” Catti-brie asked, looking up at him from where her head rested against his chest.
“Just.. thinking,” he replied, trying his best to hide his thoughts beneath his smile.
Catti-brie knew him all too well.
“Ye ain’t just thinkin’, Drizzt. If ye were, ye wouldn’t be lookin’ like the world’d collapse any second. What’s on yer mind?”
“Just.. Have you ever given any thought to live with an elf..?”
”Ye mean watchin’ me husband stay young while I be growin’ old? Aye, I have. An’ I’ve been wonderin’ ‘bout how it’d be iffen it be th’other way ‘round…” She looked up at him with a smile. “An’ I be knowin’ what really be on yer mind. An’ aye, I will..”
Drizzt stopped dead in his tracks, looking down at the woman he held in his arms.
Her smirk seemed to reach her ears.
“Ain’t be thinking I’d be able ta guess? Ye know I be lovin’ ya, ye fool.. So there could only be one other reason fer ya ta ask that question. But, like me be sayin’, I will.”
For a few, long seconds, the dark elf found himself staring at Catti-brie, not believing what his ears were telling him. Then, with a joyful yell, spun around while clutching her close to him.
“You have no idea of how happy that makes me!” he said, not giving her time to answer before capturing her lips in a caring kiss.
“Methinks me be havin’ a good idea,” she laughed, when the lack of air finally forced them to break apart again, and hugged him tightly, pressing their cheeks together.
Drizzt shivered with a slight moan as he suddenly felt just the tip of a tongue travel up the length of his ear.
“If you continue like that, I can’t be held responsible for the consequences,” he gasped, feeling her shift in his arm get get into a morefortfortable position.
“An’ ye be thinkin’ that ain’t be me idea? Me foot be hurtin’ me, an’ methinks I’ll be needin’ a bit diversion..,” she purred, and renewed her efforts.
“You’re insatiable,” he groaned. “Please, have patience, at least until we get indoors again…”
With a pout, Catti-brie stopped her ministrations of his ear, and instead settled with snuggling in close to him. However, that peace did not last long, as her hands started wandering, gently slipping under clothing and touching skin which suddenly seemed to grow warmer under her touch.
“I ain’t never been told the meanin’ o’ the word ‘patience’,” Catti-brie smirked, stretching up to press a kiss against his lips. “Burrow?”
“Burrow,” Drizzt confirmed, referring to the small cave near the entrance to the mines where they so often had spend the nights before their friendship had done a step further than either had expected.
Luckily, the pathway up the steep cliffs lay near, and they made it to the cave without being seen. Though they had not slept in the Burrow for a long time, they had still maintained it – in case they came across the desire to sleep in the open again – and Catti-brie did not fail to notice the freshly dried grass as Drizzt gently lowered her upon it.

Stumpet only took little time to tend to Catti-brie’s sprained ankle – compared with the amount of time she spend on instructing Drizzt to not let his soon-to-be wife do any attempt on standing on the injured foot in the next two weeks – and soon went on to check on Catti-brie’s health. To Drizzt’s surprise, however, he was asked to stay when the dwarven cleric was done with the human, and soon found himself getting a health-check as well.
The dwarven cleric did not, however, tell him of why she found it necessary, and instead send him, quite confused, back to Catti-brie.
A/N: Again, SORRY!!! Please stop throwing cans at my house while shouting at me to continue…
But, I’m in my final exams at the moment (Greek and Latin as the two primary classes), meaning that I have QUITE a lot of other things on my mind.
The next update will be there soon, I pray. It’ll be here faster than this update, at least…
