Chapter 3
"This task will not be easy." Said the Storyteller, leading Alice thorough his home. He hadn't been lying, there were books everywhere. Piles of them on shelves, creaking under the weight, larger piles on the floor making progress down the halls difficult. "The journey to the eastern woods alone is perilous. You will need to be well prepared." He opened a door and entered a small room.
Inside, on a small table was a pile of clothes which Alice recognised, her own. There was also a large black box. The story keeper handed the clothes to Alice. She smiled and gripped them tightly, almost afraid that they would be gone again if she even blinked.
She stared in curiosity as he opened the box and pulled out items one at a time.
"Juice from the Mushroom of size. The blue bottle will make you grow taller, the red shorter. Remember which is which and always keep track of how much you have left. You don't want to be stuck two inches tall." He handed her two small bottles the size of her thumb. The story keeper plunged back into the box and pulled out a golden key.
"This key opens all doors. But only those with locks the right size." He said enigmatically. He handed the key over to her and went into the box again. He pulled out a small ball, which looked like it was filled with a glowing blue light.
"A bead of logic. Rare in these parts. It can only be used once. When things are at their most confusing, use this for clarity." He dived into the chest again. Alice began to wonder just how many toys she was getting for this journey. The story keeper pulled out a red stick, thirty centimetres long with a red heart on top.
"The sceptre of hearts. Without it, you will never be able to convince the maid of heats to retake the throne. It is her symbol of power and she will not have the confidence to try unless it's in her hands."
Alice took the stick carefully and rested it on top of her clothes along with her other trinkets. The story keeper closed the chest and headed for the door.
"That's it?" Exclaimed Alice. "Don't I get a weapon or something?" He turned to face her with a knowing smile on his face.
"These aids will help make your quest easier. You will probably be able to pick up more on your journey, these are all I can provide. But the only weapon you can have is the one I cannot give you, you need to use your wits, and cunning to overcome all obstacles."
"We're doomed." Muttered Alice, remembering how much trouble her curiosity and lack of commonsense had caused her when she had last visited wonderland.
The storyteller smiled and approached the door. Just before leaving he hesitated and turned back to face her.
"I almost forgot." He dived a hand into his pocket and pulled out a small silver compass. "This compass will guide you to the location of the maid of hearts. It's been modified to find her instead of north." He threw it over and it landed onto the table near Alice. "I'm going to leave the room now, so you can get dressed. There is a small bag in the chest you can put you items in. When your ready, your journey will begin." He closed the door and left Alice alone.
She dumped her clothes and items back onto the table and pulled off her nightdress. Shivering with the coldness of the room she decided to get dressed before packing her bag.
She quickly pulled on the white shirt and men's trousers. No underwear, just like before. Yanking on her boots in a hurry she turned to her items. Alice tossed her things into the bag, which was in the box like the Storyteller had said, and slung it over her shoulder.
She stepped through the door, eager to say goodbye to the storyteller and begin her adventure. The second she stepped through she sensed something was different. The house felt colder, there were no piles of books on the floor or shelves. The shelves themselves still remained, but were empty and covered in a thick layer of dust. Her footsteps echoed through the halls loudly and gave her the impression that several invisible people were following her. In wonderland, there might be.
The house was empty. The shelves in the library were empty and covered in thick dust. The chairs and table where Alice had sat and heard of her mission were still there, but were also filthy from lack of use. Alice knew that if she looked around the building, she would find no evidence of anyone having lived here for years.
Alice sighed. It looked like her adventure would have to start alone. In the dust of the table she wrote GOODBYE and went out of the front door.
The midday sun shone through the trees, casting a lilac light onto the forest floor. Alice listened to the birdsong for several minutes, allowing the peace to keep her calm. Only through her calm mind and common sense would she be able to succeed in this task.
Alice delved into the bag and took out the compass. The metal spike was pointing to the northeast. The storytellers' words remained in her head. 'The journey to the eastern woods alone will be perilous.' She patted the bag positively, whatever would come, she was confident that she had something that would deal with it.
Turning in the direction the compass was pointing, Alice put her best foot forward and begen her quest to find the maid of hearts and restore the balance to wonderland once more.
To be continued.
Authors note- I know this has been a short one. Blame writers block. Plus I want to milk this story for all its worth to keep it going as long as possible. There will definitely…possibly…maybe be sex in the next chapter. I think.
