Again sorry for the italics issues!
Completing her errands did not take Sarah long even with her extra stop at the farmer’s market for some fresh produce.
Those strawberries were calling my name she thought.
The only delay in her afternoon had been trying to get a membership at the local video store with an out of state driver’s license. But eventually that had turned out successful as well and Sarah happily glanced at her Saturday night plans, rented copies of Labyrinth and Heathers sitting in the passenger seat.
Now if that’s not an exciting evening for someone…old movies, some popcorn, a cold beer and a pair of comfy boxers and t-shirt. What a change from LA.
The old brick building housing "Annette’s Antiques" came into view as Sarah took the next left. Sarah wasn’t surprised to see Mrs. Annette’s same late model Buick parked in the front as she pulled into the open space beside it. Sarah glanced in the back seat at some of her groceries, mentally timing how long she could spend in the store before losing her ice cream.
The creaking door was better at announcing her arrival than the small chimes hanging above it. The store’s items crowded almost all the available space with a small path cutting through the showroom.
"Hello?" Sarah voice seemed loud to herself. "Mrs. Annette?"
"Yes child, just a minute." The voice came from the back room. "Just finishing packing something."
Sarah occupied her time browsing around, past a set of carved end tables, admiring a beautiful chaise lounge. She was looking in one of the many curio displays when she heard Mrs. Annette walk up.
"That’s the newest crystal set I got in…need any?"
"Sorry," Sarah chuckled. "Didn’t plan on entertaining any high society while I’m here."
"Oh well…my job to try and sell stuff. But come on over here, I want to show you the items from the auction."
They walked over to another area while Mrs. Annette explained how her contacts had found out about this auction of items in New York. Sarah tried to pay attention but was still mentally timing her car versus the pint of Rocky Road.
"Some of the stuff came from old French manor homes and one had actually been in the Opera Garnier in Paris until the last renovation or redecoration…whatever they call it nowadays."
"Really?" Sarah remembered her trip to Paris with her high school French club. None of the others had been gung ho about visiting the Opera, so she toured it herself, enjoying the design and opulence of the place.
"Right here." Mrs. Annette motioned Sarah forward. "This painting is some aristocrat who didn’t fare too well in the Revolution…at least they painted him with his head attached."
She smiled as an unladylike snort came from Sarah. "Well anyway this piece," she pointed to a small bureau. "It’s from a home in the Loire valley. But here is what I wanted you to see." They turned the corner and the large mirror came into view. The carved frame surrounding it so polished the light from the lamps and windows reflected from it as much as the glass.
"How beautiful." Sarah reached out to touch the piece. "Where is this from?"
"It’s one of the items from the opera house. Was originally in some diva’s dressing room, but they took it out when they remodeled the wing. Decided something smaller would work better and so off to auction it went."
Sarah couldn’t break away from it and her own voice sounded strange as she asked, "How much do you want for it?"
Mrs. Annette looked surprised. "Well! I didn’t know you were interested in antiques."
"They’re usually not my thing, but this is beautiful. And besides if I set it up right, it will reflect light and make the living room seem bigger than it is. Oh…" Sarah stopped as the thought popped into her mind. "I’m sorry. Maybe you hadn’t planned to sell it."
"Child you know me better than that. If it’s not nailed down, I will try to sell it. So make me an offer."
A few minutes of friendly haggling followed before they settled on a price. Sarah figured her ice cream was a goner but for some unknown reason she had to buy that mirror. She quickly took her wallet and wrote a check.
"Do you still have someone that delivers? There’s no way that will fit in my car."
"No problem child. David can run it up there when he gets back from an errand I sent him on."
They headed to the door, walking onto the sidewalk and Sarah gave the woman another hug.
"Now I meant what I said: no hiding up in that cabin alone all the time. Get yourself to town and visit, maybe you can catch Meghan next time she’s in."
"It would be great to see her whole crew." Sarah opened her car door and looked up at the lady. "I promise I’ll pop by soon. David remember how to get to the house?"
"I’ll remind him. Thanks for coming by."
Sarah hopped in and started the car, waving her goodbyes as she did so. Heading out of town she hunted for a decent radio station, finally settling on KLCH.
"Thanks for listening to Lake Hits 95."The dj continued on. "We’ll start our next set of commercial free music in just a minute, but first the weather. There’s a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m. tonight." Sarah turned the volume up to listen to the report.
Well that definitely makes for a good reason to stay in tonight, she thought as the usual precautionary statements were given. Pulling onto the gravel drive leading home, Sarah sighed contentedly at the thought of a relaxing evening.
***********
"Thanks again David." Sarah walked out on the front porch with the deliveryman. "I appreciate you getting it here and helping anchor it."
"No problem."
"You sure I can’t get you a cold drink or something? That thing was surely not light to carry."
David shook his head as he looked up at the darkening sky. "Thanks for the offer, Sarah, but I think I’m gonna go ahead and head on back before it gets to raining." He started down the steps to his truck. "But it was good seeing you again. I know Mrs. Claire would be happy knowing that you had fixed the place up so nice."
Sarah smiled. "Yeah, Nana and I had a lot of fun here. It’s been good to get back."
A drop of rain popped on Sarah’s nose. "I think the rain beat you." She waved as David hopped in the truck to avoid the increasing precipitation.
"Have a safe trip! Thanks again." David returned her wave and then paid attention to the task of turning the big truck around.
Sarah sat on the front porch rocking chair, watching the truck depart, and enjoying the sound of the rain on the roof. A few minutes later, she regained her motivation and went inside to practice for a bit.
The new mirror was set up across from the fireplace, and the reflection really did seem to enlarge the room. The top of the thing almost touched the low corner ceiling. Sarah walked over and ran her hand over the glass, smiling. Maybe I should have come back here and measured before I brought this huge thing here. She shrugged. Oh well, a little late for that idea now.
She turned and headed over to the piano, grabbing her folio of piano favorites. She thumbed through several before deciding on Chopin’s Prelude in A minor. Sarah was about to start playing when she got the strange sensation that someone was watching her.
Glancing around the room, she rubbed her arms to try and get rid of the sudden attack of goose bumps.
Stop being silly, girl. It’s probably the weather…or something.
She took a deep breath to calm her nerves and turned her focus back on the music.
On the other side of the mirror, a pair of haunted green eyes watched appreciatively as the music poured from her.
