Lucy was saddened greatly by everything that had occurred. She thought about many things while she lay there in Tumnus's bed. He was a gentleman and gave it up for her. She appreciated every thing he was doing for her too but she still felt so confused. Was she really doing the right thing by following her heart and her self? Her family? They were gone.
"Lucy... Pevensie." She sighed and re read the note over and over again that night. "Who am I?"
Lucy looked around the fauns home again. She hardly slept or ate. She watched Tumnus go drive himself to exhaustion trying to make her happy once again. What was she doing!? Her mind wanted her to snap out of this funk she had gotten herself into. She knew she made the right decision. She just had to search for the answer deep down. Narnia still needed her. Tumnus said it. She still needed Narnia.
Lucy sighed and finally decided to throw the letter into the fire. She had been at Tumnus's house for three days now. When the faun came in he gasped, nearly dropping fire wood. His eyes lit up with hope when he saw her standing there.
"My Lady?"
"Tumnus." She turned to look at him and smiled. "It is Lucy."
"Well I know you are feeling better now." He grinned. "You corrected me for once."
"I am so sorry, Tumnus." She looked at the fire. "I have been so foolish. I was questioning my own heart and my own self. I let myself forget the most important thing." She shook her head. "I have kept you so busy trying to care for me. The centaurs have not been able to go home because of me. I have been such a baby." Lucy looked away from the fire to him. "Can you ever forgive me?"
"You were there for me the whole time and I ..just..I was stupid. I let my self doubt get in the way of finding my self and..the right thing to do. I should of been happy that we found that note. You were right." She stepped closer to the silent faun. "They are okay. They are going to try and come back if they can. I am still here so there is hope that it can happen." Lucy bit her bottom lip. "You were right all the while and I didn't listen. Please...Tumnus. Can you...honestly forgive me?"
"There is nothing to forgive." He nodded and smiled to her in that special way. "I was doing my duty as your friend. I am also certain the centaurs do not mind. They have found that they needed the small rest. Kale was pushing them a bit." Tumnus extended a piece of bread that was on the table to her. "Now...what you can do for me is eat. Then I will make sure to forgive you for not eating."
"Thank you." She took the bread in her hand. "You silly faun."
He found himself in tight hug. Lucy wasn't crying. She was not upset. She was happy to be here amongst friends. She was happy that he was there for her when she needed him the most. She was happy that he was not angry with her and she was happy the centaurs weren't ready to strangle her. Tumnus was happy too. Lucy was smiling again.
"This is not eating but I think I can forgive it for a moment."
"I will eat. I am starving. I wonder if ..." She chuckled. "I wonder if I could have something else...also. Besides just bread?"
"Of course!" He pointed to a chair. "Go have a seat and I will bring you a meal that is fit..for a queen."
"I can help you, Tumnus."
"Sit." He barked the command to her. "I mean it. You need your strength. You are pale enough as it is."
"Okay, okay." She sat down in the chair, shaking her head. "I could have helped though."
"Nope." Tumnus busied himself in the kitchen. "I will get you some soup, bread, and your favorite." He pulled out the small pitcher. "Berry juice."
"You are trying to spoil me now." She played with the material of her dress. "I think...once I am stronger that..." Lucy sighed. "That I can ride well enough to go to the castle. Peter's crown deserves to be back home at Cair Paravel."
"I think we can do that. You need to eat and get a little color back. Your body is telling you that it is weakened and needs a little care." Tumnus walked over with a tray. He set it before her and smiled. "It is telling you that you neglected it for a little and it wants to get better now."
"I know." She nodded. "I let my emotions get the better of me."
"You are yourself again now." Tumnus placed the spoon in her hand. "Eat slowly. Let your body savor and take it in with ease. You have not eaten much in a few days so you could get sick if you eat too quickly."
"I will." She looked up at him. "If you sit down and eat with me. You have not rested much yourself."
"You are being naughty, but I will let it slide." He chuckled. "So eat, and I will go get myself something right now alright?"
"Okay." Lucy smiled again. "I...wonder if...you..wouldn't mind terribly..."
"Yes?" he glanced up from his kitchen area. "What is it, my Lady?"
"Tumnus..."
"Sorry." He put his hands up in the air. "Lucy."
"After I eat...I would like to ...bathe. I imagine I do not look my best right now."
"You have seen better days." He walked over with a sardine sandwich. He liked his sardines. "And yes, I am sure that can be arranged. I will boil the water shortly so you can have a hot bath."
"You don't have to go through that trouble for me. I can wash in a stream."
"No." He shook his head at her. "I have a tub here. It just needs the water boiled and poured in. While you are bathing...I can wash your dress for you."
"Oh..." She looked at her self. "I suppose it is a bit ...worn but ..." Lucy chuckled. "What would I wear?"
"I have taken care of that already, my dear Queen. I knew you would snap out of it, so I went to Mrs. Beaver and asked her to sew you up a little dress. She happily obliged." Tumnus grinned. "It is not as fancy as the one you have on, but it is clean."
"You know I do not care about fancy."
Lucy sighed and leaned back in the chair eating her food. It felt good to be up and alive again. She could have continued to mentally scold her self for being stupid but where would that have got her? Tumnus looked at her as she leaned back. He was glad to see her smile when she went into her thoughts. These past few days were not easy for anyone. He didn't blame her for being upset in the least.
"This is really good." She sipped at the soup. "It tastes like Spiced root and I can't quite guess the other."
"Just an old faun recipe. Some berries, some nuts and a little bit of this and that. It is very good for you when you are sick. I made sure to have that brewed for you special." He placed his empty plate aside as he stood. "Now I am going to go prepare the bath."
"Are you sure you don't want me to.."
"No!" She was interrupted . "Eat." Tumnus knew she would try and argue, but he wasn't going to let her. "Eat it all, too."
"You have eyes that can see through walls." She chuckled. "Or can you see around corners and I just don't know about it?"
"I just know you." He was in the bathroom area. The tub was connected to the stream and had a small pipe that brought in water. He let the plug go and let it fill while lighting the fire underneath it. It was an ingenious way to get a hot bath when there was no hot spring around.
"Thank you." Lucy whispered it and continued to eat. "I know...you all...understand."
Her thoughts drifted to Peter, Susan and Edmund. They understood her better than anyone. She knew that in her heart the whole time but she tried to argue. This was her mistake. Her brain tried to pit logic against the spirit of love and what she knew.
"Tumnus?"
"Yes?" He came from the little room and was drying his hands off. "Good. You finished." He noticed her soup was gone. "Your bath will be heated soon."
"I just wanted to say thank you again. I feel much better already." She stood slowly. "See?"
Lucy chuckled and started to carry the tray over to his sink but Tumnus stopped her. He made her sit down again and she sighed. He was more protective than a mother hen!
"Don't go wasting your energy on cleaning. I'll do this. You concentrate on getting better." Tumnus smiled. "Oh, and I put the dress that Mrs. Beaver made on the side of the table. It is just beside the tub."
"So how...are you heating it?"
"Well." He cleared his and her plates as he talked. "It is large enough for you." He hmmd. "It is a thick stone. I placed heated rocks from a fire under it and that heats the stone. The stone doesn't get too hot but it gets hot enough to heat the water. The water is piped in from the stream outside so no carrying buckets either."
"How..do you..drain the water?" She blinked. "Or do you have to bucket it away."
"I open the small pipe end on the other side. The water drains away into the land outside." He walked over and around the corner again. "Speaking of which. This is ready."
"You really are spoiling me Tumnus."
"Isn't that what friends do?" He laughed. "Go on now. I will wait out here so you have your privacy."
"You're really going to let me stand up?"
"Lucy Pevensie." He gave her a quick look. "Get your royal self in there."
"Okay!" She chuckled and stood once again. "I'm going."
"I know you're feeling much better now." Tumnus shook his head. "Know how?"
"How?" Lucy walked over to the bath area but poked her head out. "Because I...look better?"
"Because you're being difficult. Now get cleaned up and be sure and toss that dress out here so I can wash it for you."
"Like I said. You are spoiling me."
Lucy undressed with the cloth flap closed. Her dress was tossed out with a quick hand before it disappeared back behind the curtain. Tumnus chuckled and walked over picking the dress up. He nodded in approval when he heard the relaxed sigh that came from the tub room. She needed to relax. All of this stress probably aged her a few hundred years!
"Don't worry about the water cooling. It will stay warm for hours with as thick as the stone basin is."
Tumnus went about his work again. He would pause every once in a while to look at the curtain flap. He heard the water splash sometimes or he heard her sigh. Lucy was bathing in his house. This was a first. He shook off his thoughts when they started to wonder about other things. He scolded himself for it, too. She was lady and she deserved a gentleman, not a mere faun. This thought made him pause. What if he were Tumnus the human? Could he do such a thing for her?
He sat down in the large chair, in which Lucy usually sat. He scooted back and pondered his new idea. She could not love a faun because she was human. What if he changed somehow for her? He was mentally slapped by other ideas. How could he think so little of Lucy? She wasn't a shallow person! The two things argued with in his mind.
"My Lady?" Tumnus tore himself away from his thoughts. "Are you alright?"
"Yes." She called from the tub area. "This feels wonderful. Thank you for drawing the bath for me."
"It was nothing. I am stepping out to go wash your gown. This way you have the fine garment to wear back to Cair Paravel." He plucked the dress up into his hands. "Okay?"
"You, of all people, know I am not worried about that." She chuckled. "And hold on. I want to go. I could use the fresh air."
"Very well. You must promise not to wear yourself out."
She stepped out from the room in her beaver made dress. It was a simple cloth, sewn and made to cover. There was no frill or lace. It was a plain dress. Lucy loved it even more because she knew the care and thoughts that went into making it. He blinked when he saw her. She looked ravishing as usual, even if her hair was wet and pulled back.
"I won't." Lucy shifted slightly. "I may ask if you want a little help though. I can help you. I am not totally helpless."
"I know you're not, my Lady. I just choose to have you relax."
"Tumnus." She chuckled. "Please call me Lucy."
"It is not proper." He sighed. "I...you do know you are a queen, right?" He picked her crown up. She had left it on the table beside the bed. "See?"
"I don't care if I am a queen." She smiled and took the crown gently from him. "I care that you are my friend and I want you to call me Lucy. I call you Tumnus, so I feel it is only fair." She smirked. "Unless you want me to call you Mr. Tumnus again."
"Alright." He smiled and shook his head. "You win for now." He motioned to the door with a slight turn of his head. "Anyways, shall we go?"
"Yes." Nodding, Lucy nudged him forward. Her hands were on his back and she pushed playfully. "We shall."
"Hey!" He chuckled as she pushed him to the door. "You're supposed too be saving your strength."
"I feel great. In fact!" She managed to push him through the door. "I feel that we can ride tomorrow."
"You mean back to Cair Paravel?" He grinned. "You do need to return there. It would be much safer for you there."
"Narnia has been peaceful for years. Why do you feel something would happen?"
"It is always best to be cautious when strange things happen here." He grasped her arm in escort. "You know what I mean, right?"
"Of course." She walked up beside him. "I...can only hope you aren't correct. I do not...think I would like Narnia to..." She looked worried. "Not since I...am...without the others."
"You will always have help."
He led her to the small stream that was just beside his home. They could see a few of the centaurs in the distance. They were sun bathing, resting and some were in the stream getting a drink. Kale smiled when he saw them approaching. Lucy waved to them all.
"My Lady. You look much better." Kale grinned. "I see Mr. Tumnus has been taking excellent care of you."
"He has." She nodded. Lucy placed her crown on her head though. "I forgot that I carried this out with me."
"How are you doing, Kale?" Tumnus looked at all of the centaurs. "Everything okay?"
"Everything is fine." Kale bowed, as did the others. "We were just resting a little."
"Please, don't let us disturb you." Lucy moved to the streams side and sat down. "Tumnus wished to come and wash my dress and I felt I could use some fresh air." She sighed though. "I also..." she nodded. "I would like to apologize since you're here. I have acted very foolish these past few days."
"Nonsense." Kale smiled. "You were upset. We can all understand. I am sure that each one of us has been upset. We all have our moments where we need to break down and cry."
"Yes." Tumnus nodded. "He is right, my Lady." Tumnus stepped into the small stream and smiled. "So you see? I told you that no one would be upset."
"You did say something similar." Lucy leaned back in the grass and sighed. The breeze felt good. "I can't help that I feel bad though. I hate to put people out."
"You aren't putting anyone out." Kale motioned to the others. "We should be going. I want to do one more patrol around before the sun starts to set."
"Please, be careful out there." Lucy glanced over them. "Oh?"
"My Lady?" Kale stopped in mid step. "Is something the matter?"
"No, No. I just forgot to ask you something." She nodded. "I was thinking that If Tumnus agrees and I feel well enough tomorrow morning, that we could begin our journey back to Cair Paravel tomorrow."
"Of course my lady." Kale smiled. "We would be happy to escort you."
"We will see how she is feeling in the morning." Tumnus interjected. "She has had a rough few days."
"He worries too much." Lucy whispered it playfully to Kale. "I feel fine."
"One can never worry enough." Kale chuckled. "I will see you both later. I must catch up to the others."
"Be well." Lucy waved to Kale as he galloped off. The others were waiting just inside the trail for him. "Tumnus?" Lucy turned to look at him now. He was washing her dress in the water. "Do you... really think I need the escort back?"
"I think you do." He placed the dress over a boulder so the warm sun could dry it now. "There is just something that... feels odd in the air. It is hard to explain."
"I suppose I know what you mean. It feels very quiet, doesn't it?"
"Yes." He sat down on the shore and sighed. "Like a calm before a storm. I could just be antsy, but I think it best of go as cautiously as possible. Besides, I think Kale and his herd feel honored to escort you."
"I feel very honored to have such friends." She smiled. "I know I am not alone but sometimes I can not help thinking about my sister and brothers." Lucy sighed and laid back in te grass. She had her hands behind her head and looked up at the sky. "I wonder ...if they are doing okay there. I can't possibly imagine being thrust back into a young age like that in a world you have not been to in years."
"They are Kings and a Queen of Narnia. They know how to handle themselves." He spoke reassuringly. "If anything, they will keep trying to get back here so they can be with you again."
"I hope so. I can vaguely remember things about the land Spare Oom. I remember it being scary, and I remember war. I can also remember not liking it very much." Lucy shook her head. "It was so hard."
"I can't imagine what you must have been through there. War is never easy no matter where you are."
"Yeah. I think...it was worse because we were taken away from something we loved." She closed her eyes. "Then I found Narnia and I ...was warm again. It was like that insecurity that I had in my heart was covered in the arms of someone warm and loving."
"That is how I felt when...you...helped me." Tumnus sighed. "I said something...I can't remember to who, but...it was..no matter what happens to me, that you made me feel warmer than I have in a long time."
"That was to me." Lucy sat up slowly. "When I .." She gasped. "W..when I was leaving for the first time after you said you said you were kidnapping me." She did remember. "You said that to me at the lamp post."
"I did.." Tumnus's cheeks turned a very soft shade of red. "I meant it and I still do."
"Tumnus."
Lucy reached and held his hand. Tumnus nodded to her and placed his other hand over hers. The two looked into each others eyes. Her heart fluttered when she saw his moistened eyes adoring her so. Tumnus was lost in her eyes.
"You mean the world to me, Tumnus. You are my truest and best friend."
"I always will be, Lucy Pevensie." He brought her hand up and kissed the top of her knuckle softly. "Forever and always, until the end of time."
Lucy pulled him over towards her and she smiled. He lost his breath when he saw her scooting closer to him. Lucy chuckled and she kissed his cheek softly. Tumnus's heart grew wings and it soared.
"Yes, and I think so much more. You are my family. You are my friend. You are someone I care about." She pulled away and grinned. "Forever, always and longer."
"I...y...you..." Tumnus gulped. "Y...you care...about me?"
"Yes, I do. Just like I know you care about me or else you wouldn't have taken care of me as you did."
"O...oh! Yes! Of course." He felt his heart fall a little. He was confused at what she meant by 'care' but it did not discourage his hopes. "F...Forgive me for ...being so silly."
"No need. I like you just as you are." She chuckled and leaned against him. Her head rested on his shoulder as she sighed. "I think I would like to sit here and watch the sunset, together."
"I think I would like that very much." Tumnus wrapped his arm around her. His hand lightly caressed her arm as he held her. "Together."
