Worth Fighting For
By Kassandra Ramsey
A/N: Thanks so much for the reviews. I am glad that so many are enjoying my story. There is only one chapter left after this one, and I hope to have it up by Wednesday at the latest.
Special thanks to my beta, Pixie Fairy. And to Lynette for looking it over.
Chapter 3: Plans
Lucy awoke to the feel of warm sunshine on her check. Sighing, she rolled over and gave a quiet gasp at the realization that she was not alone in her bed.
Tumnus was curled on his side facing her, fast asleep. Lucy smiled at the sight and gently ran her fingers through his hair. She took a moment to study him closer than she ever had before. With the lower half of his body covered by the blanket, he looked even more human than usual. He was a little hairier than her brothers, and his ears were definitely different, but other than that…
She sighed and sat up, scooting closer to him. He muttered something at her movement then let out a soft snore. Lucy clamped a hand over her mouth to quiet her giggle. Apparently he was not ready to wake up just yet.
Lucy determinedly pushed aside all thoughts of what the future might hold, and raised a hand to stroke his face.
His nose twitched, but he didn’t wake. She allowed her fingers to drift over his nose and lips. She continued down his chin and neck then followed his collar bone to his right shoulder. Lucy couldn’t help but wonder if he would end up getting hurt in the tournament. In all the years she’d known him, she had never seen him fight. Surely as long as he had lived he would have had some kind of weapon training.
“Good morning,” he said, his voice breaking her out of her thoughts.
“Good morning, sleepy,” she teased, moving her hand back up to stroke his hair again.
He gave her a huge yawn.
“I can’t help it, My Queen. It’s all the crying I’ve been doing. I didn’t cry near this much before I met you.”
Lucy snatched her hand away, her eyes filling with tears.
“Well, if I make you so miserable, then what are you doing here?” She asked, hurt.
He quickly sat up and grabbed her hand pressing it to his chest.
“No, Lucy, that came out wrong. I meant that my emotions are much more intense since I’ve met you. For years I didn’t feel anything, not really. I was like a block of ice that you melted with one smile. I do cry more, but I also laugh and smile more. I guess it is what being in love does to me. And I do love you, very much,” he said quickly.
Lucy suddenly found herself wanting to cry for an entirely different reason as she flung herself at him. Her mouth found his and suddenly all thoughts of the future vanished without any effort on her part at all.
Tumnus lowered her to the bed; not breaking the kiss, then began stroking her sides through her dress. Feeling bold, Lucy grabbed one of his hands and placed it on her breast. The faun froze, and then broke the kiss looking down at her in surprise.
“A-are you…, I mean, I don’t know…um...” he stammered and blushed, but did not remove his hand.
She raised a hand to caress his cheek.
“It is okay, Tumnus. I love you,” she said and wrapped her hand around the back of his neck to pull him down for another kiss.
Her words gave him courage, and soon both his hands were filled with her soft breasts. Just when Lucy had decided to take her gown off, there was a knock at the door.
The two jumped apart and out of bed quickly, each breathing very hard.
“Who is it?” Lucy called as soon as she could catch her breath.
“Edmund.”
She sighed in relief and hurried to let her brother in.
He looked exhausted, and there were a couple of bruises and cuts on his face and hands.
“Edmund, what happened to you?” She asked in concern.
He was obviously fighting sleep and had to give himself a slight shake to keep from falling.
“I trained all night. Peter said that humans would be allowed to participate in the tournament too. I’m going to do my best, Lu,” he promised with a yawn.
Lucy gave him an uncertain look.
“Edmund, you are my brother and I love you dearly, but I don’t want to date you,” she said, bluntly.
Edmund snorted.
“No, Lucy. If I win, I will insist on letting you choose whomever you wish,” he explained sleepily.
“Oh, will that be allowed?” she asked.
He shrugged.
“It is worth a try though isn’t it? Sorry, Lu, that’s just the best I can do right now,” he said and swayed slightly.
Lucy blinked and then shook her head.
“Go to bed, Ed. I’ll wake you in a few hours with something to eat alright?”
He nodded and turned to leave, but not before Lucy hugged him and placed a quick kiss on his cheek.
As soon as the door shut behind him, Lucy turned toward Tumnus with the brightest and most mischievous smile she’d had in weeks.
“I have a plan!”

Peter and Susan were pleasantly surprised when Mr. Tumnus entered the dinning room with Lucy for breakfast that morning.
“Lucy! You’ve finally come out of your room!” Susan cried, embracing her sister.
Lucy hugged her back then turned and gave Peter a hug as well.
“I’m so sorry I’ve caused you so much grief. I just needed time to process everything. And though I haven’t exactly solved anything yet, I do want you to know that I am okay. And that whatever happens, I will be okay,” she said, solemnly.
More hugs were exchanged and then the four set down to breakfast.
“Where is Ed?” Peter asked.
Lucy frowned.
“He was up all night training. He told me that he was going to participate in the tournament.”
Peter nodded thoughtfully.
“Maybe I should to…”
“But you can’t, Peter. As High King you have to oversee the competition,” Susan reminded him.
“Please don’t fret too much over this. Everything will work itself out, you’ll see,” Lucy said, quoting her sister with a smile.
Susan smiled back and nodded in agreement.
“You are right, Lucy. Besides, when all is said and done, we will have other options,” Susan said.
Lucy eyes went wide.
“You don’t mean to leave Narnia?” She demanded in a hoarse whisper.
Susan sighed.
“Well, that is an option, but we’ll save it for a last resort.”
Tumnus, who had listened quietly the whole time, finally spoke up.
“I have another theory about this tournament, King Peter,” he said thoughtfully.
“Oh?”
“Well, it has been almost ten years since Narnia was at war. You have a bunch of fauns and centaurs that have been highly trained in weapons and fighting with no real purpose. I bet most are for this tournament more to show off their skill than to be with Lucy. Not that any of them mind that prize,” Tumnus explained, looking rather jealous at thought of someone else being with his Lucy.
“That’s true! We should set up an annual tournament or something,” Susan said.
“Yes, and we could have the dwarves make some trophies. That way we won’t have to worry about this happening again,” Lucy added.
“So, we let the tournament play out, and have a trophy for the winner. Then I’ll announce that we’ll have an annual tournament and not even mention Lucy,” Peter said, happily.
“But surely the winner will demand…” Susan began.
“Then I’ll put my foot down. I am High King, and Lucy is their Queen. I will simply inform them that she has chosen Tumnus, and no amount of tournament winners will change her mind,” Peter said, confidently.
“And if they still aren’t happy?” Susan asked.
“We’ll just cross that bridge when we get to it,” Peter replied.
“Don’t worry Susan, I have a back-up plan,” Lucy informed her.
Peter and Susan exchanged a glance and looked at her questioningly.
“Would you care to inform us of this plan?” Susan asked.
“Nope. Just know that it will take more than some silly tournament to get the best of Lucy Pevensie, Queen of Narnia!” She declared.
“And suddenly I’m nervous again,” Susan groaned.
