Chapter 3
“Your soul, you have to give her your soul?” Mia couldn’t believe it. This changed all that she thought she knew about life. How can someone live without a soul? “What happens if you die without your soul?” she questioned further.
Darius didn’t want to tell her but he knew she deserved the truth. He had a feeling she would know if he lied to her. “We become shades, noncorpeal beings. It is an eternity of torment.”
Mia was horrified. What if Darius was to die? This was payment for giving their lives to protect others. “How old are you? Can you get your soul back?”
“I’m just over 1500 years old, and yes there is a way for a Dark Hunter to get their soul back, but that is not an option for me. I don’t want to discuss it,” he said, turning to look away from her. Darius didn’t think he could ever find someone to love him that much let alone to trust that person with his soul, his life. His own brother, his flesh and blood, betrayed him.
Mia knew she needed time to think about all the things he told her and didn’t tell her. Betsy was right. He needed to talk to someone and for some reason she wanted to be that person he trusted. Wanting to lighten the mood and to spend time with him she asked if he would show her his house.
Darius sighed in relief. He was raw with the memories of his past and he wanted to try and forget about them. He led her out of the kitchen and thru the living room, down the hall to his game room. Pointing towards the pool table he asked, “Do you like pool or darts? I would like to take you horse back riding but we must wait until the sun sets.”
“Either one is fine,” Mia said as she looked around the room.
For the next hour they played darts, which Mia surprised him with how well she could hit the target. Mia smiled, “You should see me at archery. My martial arts teacher said I have a good eye when it comes to hitting targets. It just comes naturally to me.”
Putting up the darts Darius asked, “Are you ready to go riding?”
“Yes,” Mia said excitingly.
Taking her by the hand, Darius led Mia out of the house and thru the garden to the stables. Mia looked around her seeing the beautiful flowers as they past thru the garden. Walking up to the stable she could hear the horses.
“Oh you will have to excuse Goliath. He may be a little testy because I haven’t had the chance to ride him in the last few days,” Darius said over his shoulder.
Sure enough when they came into the stable, Goliath, a huge black Noric, was quite agitated. When Darius tried to touch him he swung his head and neighed in aggravation. “Fine, I guess I will take Shadow out for a run,” Darius said as he started to turn away.
Goliath reached out and grabbed Darius by the back of his shirt with his teeth and Mia laughed, “I think he’s changed his mind.”
“Okay, okay let me go you bloody animal,” Darius growled and Goliath let him go with a snort and bumped Darius’ shoulder.
After giving Goliath the apple, Darius introduced Mia to Shadow. He was a beautiful white Andalusian and was a bit smaller and milder tempered than Goliath. After giving an apple to Shadow Darius brought out Goliath and saddled him.
Darius motioned for Mia to come forward, “Come here Mia and let me introduce you to Goliath. Goliath this is Mia. Put your hand out for him.”
Mia put her hand out and smiled when Goliath nuzzled her hand and licked her fingers.
“He likes you,” Darius said with a smile.
Darius swung up into the saddle. Reaching down he took Mia’s hand and lifted her to sit behind him. Mia put her arms around Darius’ waist and pressed her cheek against his back, savoring the chance to be near him, to touch him.
Putting his hand on hers Darius looked at Mia over his shoulder, “Are you ready?”
Mia nodded, “Yes.” They cantered thru the garden and took a trail that went thru some trees and Mia asked, “How much property do you own?”
“A few acres. I bought this property long before there were houses around here. Thru the years I’ve had many offers to buy pieces of my land but I like my privacy.” Darius leaned over to pat Goliath’s neck, “Besides, Goliath needs room to roam, don’t you boy?”
“Yes he seems to be high spirited,” Mia said, unconsciously tightening her arms about Darius.
Darius lightly squeezed Mia’s arm then asked, “Are you ready to go faster?”
Mia smiled, “Yes, I would like to go faster.”
“Hold on tight,” and with that Darius urged Goliath to take flight and they raced down the trail.
Mia laughed with delight. She had always wanted to ride a horse. She raised her face to the wind and relished this experience. Darius made it all that more precious. All too soon they came to a halt in front of a pond. “Oh, it is beautiful Darius,” Mia said while looking around. The moon shined down making the water sparkle. The breeze passed thru the trees making a beautiful song that was accompanied by the insects of the night.
Swinging his leg over Goliath’s neck, Darius slid to the ground. Turning around he reached up and placed his hands on Mia’s waist and lifted her down, letting her body slide down his. The ride here had been sweet torture for him, to feel Mia pressed up against him. He was glad she wasn’t riding before him or she would have known how much he wanted her, but now it was like he was caught, ensnared by her scent, the feel of her. Looking down into her eyes he could see her desire.
Mia’s heart beat was racing, her blood on fire. She knew that this was crazy but she couldn’t help herself from putting her arms around his neck. She knew nothing could come of their relationship but she couldn’t deny herself a kiss from his lips.
Darius captured her lips and heard her sigh of pleasure. He fisted his hands against her back, pulling her as close as he could, deepening the kiss. He was drunk by her taste, his skin on fire. He growled when she ran her hands thru his hair.
Mia knew she needed to stop the kiss before it went any farther. Oh how she wanted him inside her but knew it would change her too much. She wouldn’t be able to walk away from him and they couldn’t have anything between them. Loving him would destroy her because she couldn’t keep him. She cared too much already. She knew she wouldn’t be able to handle losing someone else she loved.
Pulling away, “Darius we can’t… I can’t...” Mia stammered while trying to catch her breath.
“I know. I am…” Darius started to say, only to have Mia stop him.
Mia put her fingers on his lips to quiet him, “Don’t say sorry. I wanted you to kiss me. I want more but I know that we can’t have anything between us. I’m not strong enough. I can’t have you and then let you go.”
Kissing her finger tips Darius placed her hand over his racing heart, “Mia that is why I watched you from a distance. I came back here to find you had grown into a beautiful woman. I knew that it would be hard to not touch you.” Darius placed a kiss on her forehead and breathed her scent in, memorizing it. He knew that for both their sakes they couldn’t see each other again. “Come, let’s go back and I will take you home.”
Not able to help herself, Mia captured his lips once more to taste him and then moved away form him. They rode back in silence because they knew that this was goodbye. When they arrived at Mia’s house Darius walked her to the front door. Turning to look up at him, Mia said, “Darius, thank you for everything. You have given me some peace with my mother’s death. I hope you find some with whatever happened in your past, I really do.”
Caressing her cheek, Darius said, “Mia, you are so much stronger than you realize. And don’t worry about me. I’ve lived a long time and I will continue to do so.” Darius didn’t tell her that leaving her was the hardest thing he has ever had to do. In such a short time she has become so precious to him. Without saying goodbye, Darius just pressed his lips against hers briefly and was gone.
