Chapter Three
Alice’s POV
“He’d told her that they couldn’t make a habit of it,” Jasper protested grumpily from beside me. We sat around the table with Emmett, Rosalie, Esme, and Carlisle. Jasper’s large hand lay in my lap, engulfing my own.
“Seems to me that he couldn’t take his own advice.” Emmett said with a shrug. A boyish grin spread across his face and I couldn’t help but chuckle at him. He was ecstatic that he had another reason to razz Edward. Everybody knew that he was waiting for the moment when he could lay into him.
“You think, Emmett? I couldn’t tell when they proceeded to do it in the shower last night, again before the sun even rose, and then once more before getting dressed at noon.” Jasper snapped agitatedly. The emotions coming from Bella and Edward were practically torturing him. Their lust played through his body and I was left to deal with his embittered attitude. I couldn’t blame him and more than once I offered the chance for an escape.
Emmett chuckled, “You forgot about the two other times they’ve escaped up to his room since we’ve been home. I’d say he’s enjoying himself to the fullest.”
“I don’t know, you’d think that Bella would be a little sore.” Rosalie commented awkwardly. She’d still not completely accepted the addition of Bella into our family, but I did need to giver her credit for trying.
“Now kids, they’re young and in love. Don’t you remember when you found your mates?” Esme questioned, her brow rose, waiting for answers.
I looked into Jasper’s face and smiled at him brightly. Yes I remembered what it had been like to finally find him. Things clicked into place and I’d have willingly gave him my heart and soul, if I had one. We had stayed within each other arms, inseparable. He’d shown me many things of love and passion that I had only dreamt of.
Emmett and Rosalie looked at each other for long moments. A silly grin played on Emmett’s chiseled features and if Rosalie could have blushed I was almost certain that she would have been bright red.
Carlisle cleared his throat ever so slightly, “I would have thought that Bella would be feeling some sort of discomfort after six bouts of intercourse. I might have to go and speak with Edward.”
“Honey, I’m not sure about that. How would Edward feel if you went up there and suggested that they take it easy?” Esme asked in a motherly fashion. She only wanted what was best for us. I doubted Edward would get embarrassed, but one never knew with him. He was always changing how he thought about things.
“Esme, I wouldn’t talk to him in front of Bella if he didn’t want me to. I’d take him aside, man to man, and explain that Bella’s body is human and he needs to take it easy.” Carlisle smiled at his wife in an assuring manner.
I leaned over and placed my head against Jasper’s shoulder. We’d had a lovely conversation throughout the evening about Bella and Edward. There had been a tension between them that everybody could see but themselves. I wanted nothing more than for them to seal their relationship in all ways possible at the time. Jasper and I had thought of different ways to make it possible but it seemed that our brainstorming was pointless. I’d had a vision while we were in the car. We’d finished watching the horror movie and were on our way home when I went blank behind the wheel. Jasper grabbed the steering wheel once he’d realized that I wasn’t really paying attention and drove us to safety from the passenger’s seat.
My vision had been of Edward and Bella cuddling beneath the blankets. They talked about a hole in the wall that Esme and Carlisle wouldn’t be happy about. The thought reminded me that they still didn’t know.
“We’re going to need some paint and some spackle for Edward’s room.” I spoke softly. A smiled played across my face and laughter bubbled out of my mouth when everybody turned to look at me. Jasper planted a kiss on top of my head and chuckled. He knew about the bed frame and the wall.
Esme lifted her brow again. She’d been through many years of tough times trying to take care of everybody within the house. Emmett, Edward, and Jasper had caused more trouble than necessary with all of their rough housing. Many times things had gotten broken, walls had gotten holes, and it all needed to be repaired. Esme’s love for home modification and do-it-your-self attitude had saved many house hold items and rooms.
“What’s happened now, Alice?” She persisted when I didn’t answer her right away.
“Edward sort of has a hole in his wall.”
Emmett burst out laugh when I said this. He’d almost knocked his chair over, which was leaning too far back on its hind legs, with the sudden rumbling of his body. “What’s he done? Sent the headboard through the wall?”
“Actually, yes…” I said brightly. I found it rather funny when I thought about the sad way the metal frame was embedded into the wall.
“I hope he didn’t hurt Bella,” Carlisle said, getting to his feet. His doctoring instincts kicked in and he was headed for the door.
“Carlisle, be vigilant with what you say.” Esme called behind him. I wanted so badly to follow after him as he left. I hadn’t seen Bella all day long and I had many questions to ask. When they left the room it was only to sneak down and grab Bella a bite to eat before going back to the escape of Edward’s room. I was practically bouncing off of my seat with anticipation! And just as I began to wonder about what I would ask first, my focus suddenly clouded and I was swept into another vision of things to come.
Bella’s POV
Rain slashed angrily down from the dark afternoon sky causing rippling waves of water to trail down the large windows. After making the bed for the last time I had sprawled myself across it, a pillow under my head, and closed my eyes. The morning and previous night’s activities had worn me out and my body was pleading with me to sleep. It felt as if I had only been asleep for minutes instead of hours when I heard a knock at Edward’s door. I didn’t want to move but Carlisle’s voice pulled me completely out of unconsciousness and my interest spiked.
“Edward, can I have a word with you?” Carlisle asked, he glanced over at me and smiled.
“I can leave,” I said, starting to sit up. But Edward hurried over to me and pushed my body back down against the bed softly.
He smiled at me before turning back to his father, “You can speak with me here if that’s alright.”
“Alright, I came to speak with you about Bella.”
“What about her?” Edward questioned suspiciously.
I rose up so that I could focus my attention on him now. He smiled down at me apologetically and continued, “I suppose it’s a good thing that you’re both together. Then I won’t have to explain it twice. I wanted to speak with you about Bella’s safety.”
“I’m perfectly safe Carlisle…” I started slowly, but his voice was talking over mine abruptly.
“I mean your safety during sexual intercourse.” He stated, again giving me that apologetic smile. I looked into his handsome face and didn’t know whether I should be embarrassed or not.
“I think we’re old enough not to need a sex talk.” Edward interjected quickly. He looked at me as if trying to assess my emotional status.
I held my hand out to him and pulled him onto the bed beside me, “Please continue, Carlisle.”
“As I was saying, I came to speak with you, well Edward really, but to both of you all the same. I wanted to make sure that you’re both being safe about the fact that you’re human.” He explained as he went and sat on the couch across from us. “Edward needs to know that your body is only human and such vigorous…love making…might cause your body more harm than intended.”
Edward’s expression hardened as his father explained the reasoning for his speech, “I know perfectly well that Bella is human, Carlisle.”
“I think you might be putting to much strain on certain parts of Bella’s anatomy,” he looked at the metal bed frame and the denting within wall. “Have you considered that your extra strength could cause serious problems for Bella? You might accidentally push to hard and cause internal tearing or unintentionally harm her cervix. Her body is like glass compared to yours. You’ve obviously let things get a little heated.” As he said the last he pointed toward the wall.
Edward’s expression softened and he looked at me uncertainly. I hadn’t wanted to admit that I was a little sore from our love making. I just wanted to embrace his body and show him how much I needed him. It was slightly uncomfortable, but it was nothing that I thought would be too serious.
“Bella, are you experiencing any discomfort?” Carlisle asked worriedly. I looked into his topaz eyes and saw the anxiousness practically dance across his pupils.
“A little,” I admitted weakly. I suddenly couldn’t meet Edward’s gaze. I feared that he might be furious with me.
“Bella, love, why didn’t you tell me?” His hand snaked under my chin and turned my head so that I was looking into his hurt pale face. I could see the regret playing over his features.
“It didn’t hurt while we were…together and it’s only a slight ache right now. I’m not going to die, Edward.”
“You’ve got to be careful with things like this. It’s easy to lose control and push beyond the limits of what’s pleasure and what’s pain.” Edward grumbled out a sting of profanities that would make anybody blush in embarrassment. I scowled at him disapprovingly.
Just then the door was thrown open and Alice came bouncing into the room. Carlisle glanced at her momentarily and then turned back to Edward, “Please just proceed with caution. Let her body rest before you decide to go at it again.”
“Is anyone up for a game of ball?” Alice asked vibrantly as she skipped to the bed and flopped gracefully down beside me. “The storm should hold out for the majority of the night. It’ll be a little wet, but Bella can bundle up and we’ll set up the yard umbrella to keep the rain off of her.”
“Sounds like fun Alice, we’ll leave just after dark.” Carlisle stated with a grin. He stood up and patted Edward on the shoulder before leaving the three of us alone.
“Are we going to run to the field?” I questioned.
Edward looked down into my upturned face and shook his head, “We’ll take the jeep. It might be more comfortable for you and it’ll keep you out of the rain as much as possible.”
I nodded and glanced at Alice. She was practically bouncing off the edge of the bed with excitement. My face must have shown my suspicion because Alice simply smiled and jerked her head from side to side, “We’ll talk about it later, Bella.”
“No you won’t, Alice. I won’t have you asking Bella personal questions to satisfy your curiosity. It’s out of the question.” Edward declared firmly.
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Alice protested innocently.
Edward reached over and shoved her roughly off the end of the bed. She caught herself before she hit the ground and glared at him. Edward growled under his breath, “Get out of my room, Alice.” She stuck out her tiny pink tongue and then skipped from the room, flashing a smile at us over her shoulder.
Emmett’s Jeep was already warmed up thanks to Edward. He’d snuck away from me long enough to turn the heater on a few minutes before we climbed in. I smiled at his thoughtfulness. Emmett had walked us out to the car, and before we left he made a point to instruct Edward to use safety. Edward glowered at him and slammed the vehicle into reverse. As we pulled away I saw Emmett chuckling to himself.
“What’s wrong, Edward?”
He drove the Jeep down the drive faster than I would have liked. His eyes never left the road, “Nothing, I just can’t believe how careless I’ve been and Emmett is driving me nuts. He’s being inconsiderate of your feelings and rude.”
I furrowed my brow and stared at him from the opposite side of the car. What on earth was he talking about, “I don’t understand. What do you mean? He’s only been joking around with us.”
“Emmett’s just being an over confident ass. I don’t like that he’s teasing us about our intimacy. He can tease me all he wants, but not you. And then, Bella, I could have seriously injured you last night or today. Don’t you understand that? My body doesn’t wear the way a human's would and I didn’t even consider that I might be hurting you. No, instead I had my way with you the way I wanted to and didn’t even consider you.” He ground out bitterly.
“Don’t do this again. We’ve already talked about this. You didn’t hurt me and I’m alright. It was a good thing that Carlisle came and spoke with us because now we know not to go over the top with this. It could have easily gotten out of control and it didn’t,” I bite out sarcastically. We’d spent the better half of the evening talking about the fact that something could have gone wrong. I’d wanted to stop listening to the nonsense but Edward made sure that he held my attention. I really didn’t want to go through that all over again.
“I don’t trust myself, I wanted to let go of my pent up needs. I wanted to sink my teeth into your beautiful neck. Am I a monster now?” He yelled the last. I jumped from the fierceness of his voice.
“You’re not a monster, Edward, you just have needs. Soon enough we’ll be able to let go and not hold back. We’ll be together to the fullest extent. Until then we can take it easy. It’s natural, what you’re feeling; that’s natural to you. You might have felt like you were going to lose it, but you didn’t lose it any of the times we were together.” I preached looking out the window. Edward was driving quickly toward the trail we were going to have to take up to the field.
“Bella, sometimes I think you like to ignore the things in life that you don’t agree with. I sit here and tell you I want to bite you and you simply argue that I didn’t. As if I should move on and leave it be.”
“Maybe it would be better if you thought that way too. Things happen in life that we cannot control. We just have to accept them and learn how to use them to our advantage.” I cringed as he swung the jeep around from the main road to bounce up the trail. The headlights flashed over the trees and the slippery path.
“No, Bella, I won’t just accept the fact that I might not be strong enough. Weakness is unacceptable when it comes to your health.” He must have seen that his driving was making me nervous. Slowly the Jeep began to decelerate and bounce almost normally along the path.
I thought for a moment and then blushed at what I was going to say next, “We’ve had sex six times and I’m still alive.”
“But you’re hurt,” He protested angrily.
“I am not, this is absolutely ridiculous. I’m a little sore. I’ve been through much worse than over sexed organs, if you remember properly; James almost killed me.”
His face fell in the darkness. We’d reached the end of the path and he’d switched off the ignition. Like a shadow he sat perfectly still for long moments, unsure of what to say. Sadly he murmured, “You don’t have to remind me, Bella. I’m well aware that that was my fault as well.”
I unsnapped my belt and got to my knees on the leather seat. I leaned over and grasped his hard face in my hands. He was looking at me with an expression I couldn’t quite read. “Edward, please don’t make this into something that it isn’t. The reason I didn’t tell you that I was feeling a little discomfort is because I couldn’t resist you. I wanted you time and time again. I still want you, but I know our family is waiting for us or else I might try tempting you. I want, no need, you to realize that I don’t regret anything; moving here, meeting you, none of it. I wouldn’t change a thing. I know being with you might not always keep me safe. But when I’m with you I know I will be. You never let anything bad happen to me on purpose. Do you remember the morning when you told me that if you could you would dream of me and that you weren’t ashamed?” My hands moved along his skin caressing the cheeks of his cold face.
“Yes, I remember that,” he answered. His expression told me that he wasn’t quite sure about where I was going with the conversation.
“If I could I wouldn’t trade away the pain. I wouldn’t trade away the danger I get into. I would do it all over again if I could and for that I am not ashamed.” The last was whispered above his mouth. As I finished I planted the softest of kisses on his lips.
“Bella, do you know why I love you?”
“Because you know that no matter what I will always love you too?” I brushed my lips along his jaw line to emphasize each word.
“Well yes, but not only that, you’re sweet and understanding. You try to see things from every angle before you pass judgment and most of the time you judge too fairly. You don’t see me as the monster that I am. You see me as if I were just another human being.”
“You are a human being, Edward. You just have special needs is all. And you forgot the part about how I am more than just brains and witty repartee. Oh, and how you simply cannot resist my scent. I’m just too tempting for you to let alone.” I joked lightly. I never liked arguing with Edward. I sometimes worried that he would decide that leaving me was best for my safety again. I couldn’t bear it if he left me again.
“I shan’t forget about that, love,” He replied with a grin. Before I knew it he’d pulled out of my grasp and was opening my door to help me out. Holding out his hand he bowed ever so slight and beckoned me toward him, “M’lady?”
Snorting with laughter I pulled my hood over my head and grasped his hand. I slipped out into the rain and Edward’s waiting arms. He made quick work of placing me gently on his back and once I was secure we were off. Trees rushed by us in dark shadowy blurs. I tried to focus on the path he was running but every time I thought I knew where he was going to end up he changed directions. My pelvic bone bumped lightly against his back causing slight pains to soar through my body. They were joyful memories of our love making and I was glad for their reminder.
By the time we’d gotten to the field Edward’s family had gotten everything prepared. The bases were marked and Esme sat beneath the large umbrella waiting for me to join her. Emmett jogged over to us as Edward let me down beside the rocks that we’d be using for chairs. I scrambled up beside Esme and wrapped up in a thick blanket she’d brought for me.
“How was the ride?” She asked with a soft smile.
I grinned at her question, “It was perfectly fine. Sometimes it amazes me how quickly he can move.”
“He’s always been that way.” Esme said and hugged me against her.
“Think you took long enough? My car better not smell like anything unpleasant.” Emmett said, a silly grin acrossehis handsome face. The dark curls upon his head were plastered to his face from the rain.
“Bella and I needed to talk.” Edward said simply. He leaned over where I huddled and placed a gentle kiss on top of my head.
“Is that what they’re calling it nowadays?” Emmett questioned with a chuckle. He was too preoccupied with his joke to see that Edward had righted himself and was throwing a punch at him. The fist smashed into the side of Emmett’s face sending him reeling backwards. Quicker than a flash he had straightened up and was coming toward his brother.
“Boys, play nicely. Emmett, give it a rest will you? And Edward, lighten up a bit. I won’t have any fighting.” Esme hadn’t even needed to move in order to stop the fighting. She still sat beside me with a frown on her face. I watched as both boys backed away from each other.
“He needs to learn some manners.” Edward spat out furiously.
“Who’s going to teach me. Eddie, are you?” Emmett growled out.
I sat beside Esme hoping that things wouldn’t turn for the worst. Edward brushed roughly past his brother, “We’ll settle this on the field.”
Emmett turned around with a scowl on his face and though he didn’t need to, he shouted after Edward, “Yeah, and I’ll be kicking your ass!”
“We’ll see about that.” Edward called back confidently.
“Great, here we go…” Alice mumbled. She and Jasper were waiting for Edward to join them by the batters square.
Esme, clearly defeated, shook her head and called, “Play ball!”
