The sun was so brilliant it hurt their eyes, and the water was such a pure cold blue that it beckoned to them to stop and have a drink. Jean-Claude had not tasted sweet water in hundreds of years, but the body he now wore was real and not an animated corpse. He knelt by the water’s edge and allowed the crystal clear water to slip between his fingers like liquid diamonds, and it amazed him to no ends. Tentatively he scooped up a palm full and held it to his lips. He tasted it with his tongue, lightly at first, and then he poured the liquid into his mouth and down his throat.
An almost divine thrill raced through his body and settled in the pit of his stomach. Gazing up at Asher with awe and wonder on his face, he gasped, “We can do this! We can drink water.”
Asher’s eyes grew wide with astonishment. Falling to his knees beside Jean-Claude, he scooped up handfuls of water and drank deep. The sheer ecstasy of being able to drink water again shut his eyes.
“Mon ami,” Asher sighed, “I did not think this would ever happen again.”
Jason, watching the vampires celebrate an act as simple as drinking water, caught Niamh’s eyes and said, “They may not want to go back.”
Niamh’s incredible green eyes softened for a moment, and then she said, “I won’t let them be hurt if I can help it.”
“Then why bring them here?” Jason persisted. “Why make them mortal again and then take it away?”
“Only people from your world can take the dragon. If we did, it would mean war for our people.”
“So we get the war instead?”
Enyo, overhearing their conversation, left Wicked’s side walked back up the shoreline to where they stood. “Not war for your people,” she assured Jason and the other werewolves. “Domnu has not crossed over in thousands of years, and we suspect she isn’t interested in humanity anymore.”
“But you’re not sure,” Clay spoke up. “You don’t know that she won’t become interested again.”
Shang-Da had been raised to believe that dragons were benevolent creatures. How was it that this one was so evil? He asked Enyo this and received the answer, “Because it’s not a real dragon. Not like your cloud dragons.”
“We have another name for it,” Niamh explained, “but dragon was the best we could come up with so you would understand.”
“But just in case you’re interested, it’s a uilebheist,” Enyo answered the unspoken question. “A two headed water serpent that can travel anywhere there’s water. He could appear in that lake if he wanted to.”
“Which means we need to get Richard into the rath,” Niamh suggested.
Only now did anyone notice the great stone fort sitting on the hill behind them with a mountain range on either side of it. Dracula’s castle in Transylvania had nothing on this. A road wound from the lake up hill for several miles. Jamil and Shang-Da, shouldering Richard’s nearly limp body between them, studied the incline and then gave each other a thoughtful glance. Richard’s weight meant nothing to them at the moment, but a long walk would be telling.
“Maybe we can make a litter,” Clay suggested and looked around. Fir trees were in abundance but no slender saplings to cut down and make litter poles out of.
Niamh watched the werewolves a moment with a gentle smile on her lovely face. After a minute had passed she walked to the water’s edge and clapped her hands together. Everyone watched in awe and amazement as the water started foaming and churning. Jean-Claude and Asher took involuntary steps backward as things started materializing in the tortured water. Each-uisges, waterhorses or kelpies, a hundred different names in a hundred different languages, began to take shape in the foam.
Pure white, they stepped on the surface of the lake with silver sheets of water pouring off their sides. Tossing of their sea foam manes, they broke into a trot and headed towards the shore.
Niamh next turned her attention to a stand of rocks and boulders and whispered the phrase that would transform them into harnesses and a wagon. The vampires and werewolves stared with open mouths as everything they needed to safely move Richard up the steep path to the rath was readied for them.
Wicked and Truth wasted no time harnessing the magical waterhorses to the wagon. Jean-Claude climbed in first and helped them load Richard into the wagon bed. Asher climbed in next and sat beside Jean-Claude. They were sitting with their backs to the wagon seat. Jean-Claude wanted to make sure Richard did not suffer anymore harm. The werewolves climbed in last and cradled Richard between them. Truth waited until everyone was settled before hopping on the wagon bed with his feet dangling over the side. Wicked was elected to drive the wagon and helped the women sit beside him.
He and his brother had once traveled an entire month on mules to help relieve a city from an enemy attack. Sitting behind a four horse team with the sun in his face and the wind in his hair was nice. And Enyo’s hand squeezing his thigh was even nicer. They had a lot of catching up to do. He smiled at her. Yes, a lot of catching up to do.
Jason, sitting closest to Jean-Claude, thought ‘so this is Never-Never Land in Once Upon a Time.’ Who could have imagined that it was real? Smiling at Jean-Claude, who was sitting with his eyes closed and his face lifted towards the sun, the young werewolf wondered if his master had retained any of his powers? In St. Louis Jean-Claude was powerful, but the only power Jason had witnessed so far was coming from a lovely lady in a green gown.
The wagon rocked gently back and forth, the creaking wheels creating the only manmade noise. Birds dashed overhead from one tree to another, their blue plumage almost sparkling in the sunlight. Jean-Claude opened his eyes and saw them. A smile softened the cold perfection of his face. “Was it ever like this when we were alive?” he softly asked Asher.
“I am certain there were moments,” Asher answered with an affectionate smile and squeezed Jean-Claude’s hand. Anita wasn’t here. Would Jean-Claude come to his bed now? Would Jean-Claude accept him as his only lover while they were here? Did he dare dream such things?
As the wagon slowly came upon the gate, the heavy double doors slowly opened. Wicked drove the team into the fortress and was curious to find that their welcoming committee consisted of only two beings, one male and one female. They greeted Niamh and helped everyone out of the wagon.
“I’ll unharness the horses,” Wicked offered as everyone started towards the main building.
“Then I’ll stay too,” Enyo said and smiled at him. “If Truth and I help, it will go quicker.”
Wicked returned her smile as he attacked the lead horse’s harness and unbuckled the breast strap. Truth moved to free the wheel horse, while Enyo took the right lead. The moment all four horses were freed, they vanished in a splash of water, and the wagon and harness turned back into rocks.
“Saves on feed bills, I suppose,” Wicked mused as he turned to follow the others.
“Niamh’s father has the power to control coastal waters and lakes,” Enyo explained and fell in step beside him. “Being able to create waterhorses was his present to her.”
Truth, walking on her right, smiled and said, “It is a convenient gift.”
Enyo gazed up at his strong handsome face and smiled. She and Truth had not been friends in the old days. He had feared her ‘strangeness’, and she had disliked his Christianity. Funny how things turned out.
“Were you a goddess back then?” he asked curiously.
“Oh yes, I was,” she admitted.
“That explains the good sex,” Wicked laughed. “That certainly explains it.”
