Isabella’s Obsession
Chapter Three: I wasn’t prepared for this
________________________________________
Somewhere in between my dream and reality there was a phone ringing. I was still very tired, so with my luck I figured that the evil ringing was in the realm of reality.
I groaned into my pillow, rolled over and blindly searched for my cell phone.
It was Phil.
“Hello?” My voice was groggy and I did little to hide the fact that he had just woke me up. As far as I was concerned… he could live with the guilt.
“Bella! Wakey-wakey little one, time to get up.” He was way too chipper this morning and not an ounce of guilt was obvious in his voice. It was mildly irritating but still amusing since Phil was just as much of a morning person that I was. I was barely an afternoon person.
“Victoria didn’t let you sleep in.”
Victoria was Phil’s agent/stylist. She was the kind of person that rarely slept and always seemed to have an abundant amount of energy. She was all business when it came to Phil, so Phil could never use his charm and good looks to win her over. That was among many of reasons why I like her.
“No sir re. I’ve been up since four.”
“Ouch. Well I’ll call you when I wake up. Have fun.”
I pulled the phone away from my ear, fully intending on hanging up the call when I hear Phil’s gruff voice laughing through the phone.
“If you hang up you can expect a morning wakeup call every morning.”
I sighed, bringing the phone back to my ear. “Besides,” he continued. “It’s six and I was going to swing by and take you to breakfast before I have to fly back out to Phoenix.”
“What happened to the little party you’re forcing me to go to this weekend?” I asked. I hoped to all deity that Phil leaving town was my way out of that disaster. The last thing I wanted to do was socialize with those people after yesterday, especially if their kids were any sample of what I could expect.
Well… Except for Vernon and his wife Jane, from the few times I meet them they were always very sweet. I had no clue what tree Tanya fell out of.
Phil snorted. “I’ll be back in three days. You’re not getting out of it that easy.” Great!
“Okay fine. But this will cost you. I expect omelets this morning.”
“Ugh, that is revolting.”
I smiled. Phil absolutely hated eggs; he couldn’t stand the smell of them. They weren’t entirely my favorite either but they worked whenever I was a little bit miffed at Phil.
“Just be ready. I’ll be there in a bit.”
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Thirty minutes later I was dressed and sitting on the stone wall in front of the school with my mind wondering back to yesterday.
A boarding school that housed a little less than three hundred students had to mean that everyone already knew about my little confrontation with the golden clique. And since first days of school were never very exciting, I was sure that I would be the most talked about girl in school tomorrow, which wasn’t a good thing.
The only thing I wanted to do at this new school was to blend in. No matter how much I detested leaving my home in Arizona to attend a school as pretentious as Ignatius Academy, there still was a small part of me, a very small part that was actually looking forward to starting over.
But since my mind runs a little slower than my mouth, a new start will never happen, considering how I basically made myself the social outcast before school even officially started.
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little intimidated about the possibility of running into Rosalie and Tanya around school. They just seemed like the kind of girls that have never lost an argument before and they probably wouldn’t like me being their first. And the last thing I needed was two childish, spoiled, super models on my case because I had the audacity to defend myself.
Besides, I still felt a little catty for the name drop I pulled yesterday. I had never done that before. I never felt I had to, but something about those girls brought out claws that I didn’t even know I had, much less knew how to use.
I just felt like a drowning cat yesterday morning. I had to deal with so many snobs and a plethora of bullies in
Arizona that I had actually became use to the idea of a new start, so when Tanya and Rosalie threatened the new secret life I had already started to create in my head, the claws came out, and like a drowning cat I sunk my claws into the closest life saver, which at the moment was Phil’s name.
Things just seemed like they were going to be difficult for me wherever I went.
Phil’s black service car pulled up, knocking me out of my thoughts. The driver he’d been using, James, shuffled out of the driver’s seat to open the passenger door for me.
I smiled my thanks as I got in the car.
“Morning Bella.” Phil grimaced, a massive pair of sunglasses covering the majority of his face. Phil wasn’t a morning person and he was vain to some degree. I knew that his glasses were hiding red and swollen eyes caused by his failure to get a good night’s sleep. I wanted to laugh at the ridiculously sized sunglasses he was wearing but decided against it, I was just as bad some mornings.
“Morning sunshine.” I murmured as the car lurched forward, pulling out of the schools colossal paved way.
I snuggled into my seat, getting comfortable enough for a quick nap.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
It felt like only five minutes had passed when Phil woke me up. I blinked my eyes, clearing my vision enough to see that we had stopped in front of a café.
James scurried out of the car and opened my door. I got out, immediately feeling the crisp cool air against my face, effectively knocking any remnants of sleep from me.
The café’s curtains were pulled and there was a small sign hanging in the door that read closed. “Looks like I won’t be getting those eggs today.” I sighed, wondering if Phil would just let me go back to the car and sleep until classes started.
He snorted, arching his eyebrow as the café’s door swung open revealing an older woman standing in the doorway.
“You’re really underestimating me today Bells.”
It was my turn to arch an eyebrow, “And there goes ego man.” I mumbled.
“The rest of your guests are here Mr. Dwyer.”
“Very well then,” Phil replied.
I stopped, turning curiously to face Phil. “Guests?”
He smiled sheepishly. “Well, yeah... I ran into Lizzy, an old friend, yesterday evening and she mentioned this ‘first breakfast’ thing she does with her family and after Victoria told me I had to return to Phoenix for a few days… I figured that it’ll be a good idea for us to go out and to invite them to have their ‘first breakfast’ with us,” he said. “Plus you’ll get a chance to meet some knew people. That’s always good, right?”
I gritted my teeth. Phil was only trying to help me transition my life here. He was only trying to help. I have to remember that. He was only trying to help.
I plastered a smile on my face and nodded my head, watching as the nervousness visibly trickled out of Phil.
“Great.” He beamed. “Shall we?”
The curtains were drawn, the place was dark and there were huge hurricane candles lining the entryway. It was pretty obvious that this place catered to a selective scale of people and this place had Phil written all over it.
As I drew near to what I assumed was the main dining area I could hear whispers and laughter. I fumbled, tripping over the long rug running from the door down the hall. Phil reached out instinctively preventing my fall.
I huffed, slightly annoyed at myself. At least I wasn’t already in front of Phil’s guest, I guess. That would have been pretty embarrassing.
People already looked at me as if I was some foreign object from space whenever Phil introduced me to his friends. Phil never noticed, and the few times I had the nerve to bring it up to him, he waved me away laughing.
He always told me that I was so beautiful that people were just ‘entranced’ with me.
After I regained my breath from laughing, I held my hand against Phil’s forehead checking for a fever.
Though Phil didn’t want to believe it, there was no doubt in my mind that they questioned my presence with Phil.
He was everything I was not: abnormally good looking, charming and funny. He always just seemed to be the center of attention. Phil fitted in wherever he went.
I on the other hand was the complete opposite: average looking, clumsy and shy. All qualities that would normally help me blend in and just barely survive any social interaction. But in Phil’s world, those qualities had me sticking out like a sore thumb.
The long hallway came to an end and I was met with a table full of Phil’s guest.
Apparently the Cullen’s were very good friends of Phil’s.
Great.
The light laughter quieted and six pairs of eyes turned towards me.
It was silent. The only noise that could be heard was the slight ticking of a clock and the light traffic outside. I could feel the tension in the room growing, filling the room and suffocating me. The adults looked confused, watching the silent interaction back and forth between their kids and me, and I could feel Phil’s penetrating gaze burning holes into the back of my head.
“You invited them?” I whispered. The words tumbled out of my mouth before I could stop them. It was laughable really. I hadn’t known the Cullen’s would become eternal fixtures in my new life.
I mean, I really didn’t know them, other than the catty confrontation that took place with their children yesterday at school. But they had to be nice people if Phil deemed them worthy of such a personal interaction…..
Well their parents were probably good people.
A woman with light brown hair and kind eyes got out of her chair and approached us, a nervous smile playing across her lips.
“Hello Isabella. Phil ‘s told me so much about you.” She said.
Her tone and the way she approached me had me wondering if it was obvious that I was approaching my breaking point. Her movements were gentle and her voice held a soothing quality. I couldn’t help the slight irritation creeping up on me because of the kiddy gloves she wore as she handled me.
I might have been breaching my breaking point but god, I wasn’t crazy!
I heard a snort coming from the table and my eyes shot up and met Emmet’s amused expression. He shook his head and rolled his eyes towards the lady standing in from of me.
I smiled faintly at him, happy to know that I wasn’t the only person who felt this way.
“Uh, okay?” I squeaked at, after having noticed I still hadn’t replied to her greeting. I felt my cheeks flushed. ‘Uh, okay?’ Really Bella? Gosh.
“Hopefully nothing to bad,” I quickly recovered. “Nice to meet you….”
“Elizabeth,” she cut in. “Elizabeth Cullen.”
I smiled and Elizabeth’s look of nervousness faded, immediately replaced by a look of confusion as she looked over my shoulder.
I looked at Phil and saw that he had a brief flash of panic pass over his face, before it was quickly replaced with his normal bored look.
I arched a brow. Something wasn’t quite right here.
A throat cleared from the table and Elizabeth faltered before returning her gaze back to mine, a soft smile on her face.
“Where have my manners gone. Let me make introductions.” She hesitated, before grabbing my arm and walking me towards the table.
“Isabella I want you to meet Carlisle and Esme, their kids Emmett and Alice, and my son Edward.” She said.
“Pleased to meet you,” Carlisle said as Esme offered me a warm grin. “It’s nice to see you too Phil. Have you finally decided to come back after all these years?” Carlisle added with a look of distaste on his face as he threw his linen napkin onto the table.
“This is as good a time as any,” Phil said. His voice was clipped and his posture straight. I had never seen him this tense before or this curt with anybody. “I didn’t know you were coming Carlisle. I would have made better preparations if I had known.”
“I’m sure you would have.” He replied.
I chanced a quick glance at the other occupants of the table, and they too seemed shocked by the interaction between the pair. It made sense to be shocked, Phil was friendly and easy going, I’ve never seen him in any sort of altercation before, and Carlisle didn’t necessary look as if his personality was much different from Phil’s.
“Bella, it’s so nice to see you again. I tried catching up with you yesterday evening but I guess you weren’t in your room.” Alice said.
“No, I turned in early. I was really tired you know. What with the time change you know.” Lie. I heard the door but I chose to ignore it. Alice was the only person I met yesterday who I didn’t have a real problem with, I figured it was her. I knew it was wrong but I really didn’t want to be bothered. After all, a girl should be allowed her time to wallow in self pity without disruptions.
“Um, did you want something yesterday?”
“I wanted to invite you to the lake with us. Just a few friends of mine, Jessica and Kate were going, along with Garret - the guy you met yesterday - Jasper and Laurent. You would’ve had fun if you had come too.” She said as
I struggled to keep from rolling my eyes. Sure, fun… about as much fun as I had the last time she introduced me to one of her friends.
“Oh, that did sound fun. How about a rain check?” I said, trying to be polite.
She beamed up at me, “Sure!”
Edward pulled the chair next to him out, once again, barely glancing up at me from behind yet another newspaper.
I sat down, not bothering to offer him my thanks if he was going to be polite and then rude. After the way he acted during our slight altercation yesterday, I was content with his rudeness. Edward being rude meant I didn’t have to say thank you. It meant I didn’t have to say anything to him at all.
Phil sat quietly beside me, perusing his menu. He looked like he wanted to be anywhere but here and it took every ounce of self-control to stop myself from asking him ‘why the hell did we come here if you don’t want to be here.’ After all they weren’t my friends; I wasn’t the one who had invited them. In fact, I think I could actually manage a perfectly content life without ever knowing these people. It didn’t matter one way or the other to me.
Esme sighed, her voice cutting into the deafening silence. I wanted to ask her if she was forced to be here as well, until I saw her pinching her husband’s arm. Apparently her frustration was directed towards Carlisle not us.
“So Phil, Elizabeth mentioned you picked up a career in pro-baseball. How is that going for you?” Esme politely asked.
Carlisle snorted and I felt Phil tense up beside me. “It’s going.” Phil replied.
Esme’s smile tightened as she turned back to me. “And you Bella? How do you like the school thus far?” I wanted to reply ‘its going’ just as Phil had, but Esme was attempting to ease the tension, which is more than I could say anyone for anyone else. At least she was trying.
“It’s pretty nice actually. It’s a very stunning school.” It really was beautiful. It was huge, the décor might have been a bit haughty but the school overall was lovely.
“Stunningly pretentious.” Emmett mumbled under his breath and I smiled. I knew that Emmett and I would be friends, or if nothing else, at least cordial to one another.
He smirked back, before returning to his menu.
“That’s exactly the same thing I thought when I first saw the school. I was amazed by the story that the décor seemed to tell.” Elizabeth breathed while a distant look came over her features.
“Of course everybody didn’t share my exact thoughts. Phil here thought the school was atrocious. What did you say it was, Phil? Oh yes, I remember, ‘A well designed prison’.” She laughed.
Everyone laughed, including me. That sounded like Phil, a deviant to rules placed by society. I figured that was what drew him and my mother together. Phil might have had rules and a carefully constructed plan for his life, which was the complete opposite of Renee, but Phil hated following rules. He was outspoken and questioned almost everything, which was a very similar to traits that Renee had.
“I would have figured you would have felt more welcomed.” Carlisle said. Esme groaned from beside him, her hands briefly coming up to her face.
I watched as Phil’s grin faded from his face. His jaw was ticking and I was sure he would reach over and hit Carlisle. I would be lying if I said I wished that he wouldn’t. My inner self was totally rooting for Phil to hit him.
I heard a soft ‘thwack’ from the side of me and I turned to notice Edward’s emergence from behind the menu. He had been so quiet I had forgotten that he was even there.
I chanced a quick glance at his features and I noticed his face registered shock.
The lady that showed us in came and asked if we were ready to order. Another thing I had forgotten, was that this was an actual restaurant.
We ordered and I watched as the lucky lady shot of the room as if fire was nipping at her heels. I guess she felt the tension too.
Our food hadn’t even arrived before the next bout of tension tore through the room. Phil jumped, Esme grimaced and a growl ripped from Carlisle’s throat. Carlisle gave Phil one last heated glare before he tore out of the room, Esme on her heels.
I looked to Phil and he was just as shocked as everyone else was, and perhaps maybe even a little guilty.
“Kids!” Carlisle shouted as he reached the doors. Alice and Emmet sprinted from the room after their very upset father.
Edward hesitated before standing up, “I’ll guess I’ll see you at the party mother. I think I should ride with Carlisle.” He said before turning to walk away.
I sat there dazed, wondering what in the hell just happened. I heard Phil whispering right before Elizabeth stood up and left.
“This was fun.” I said. Phil sat dazed, looking at the opposite wall, his head nodding up and down slowly in agreement to my comment.

Okay guys, sorry for the wait between chapters. I hadn’t forgotten about Isabella’s Obsession….. I’ve just had a bout of writer’s block for this story. Thank you guys for the awesome reviews on the last chapter! Thanks again to AnUnborkenHorse also known as RushtonElf for being a kick ass beta! She seriously rocked this chapter into coherent shape within a matter of hours!
And also, I know that this chapter will leave a plethora of questions but trust me all will be revealed soon. As to one of the questions I received, so far this story will be strictly from Bella’s point of view, I actually toiled with the idea of switching POV’s but after rewriting this chapter three times, one from Edward’s, one from Alice’s, and then Bella’s, I finally decided that Bella had the best view of everything.
I’m thinking about posting an outtake from Carlisle’s POV on his take of the whole breakfast fiasco and one of Edward’s…. Depends on the response from this chapter….
Next chapter is already started and we get to see Bella’s first day of school….
Here’s a preview: She stood awkwardly in the middle of the room while I stood just as awkward by the door. The silence was deafening.
“Look, Bella…. I’m sorry for the confrontation between you and Rosalie the other day. If I knew she was going to be that much of a bitch, I would have never introduced her to you.”
I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from saying, “Well you didn’t actually try to stop her did you?” That, however, probably wouldn’t have stopped Rosalie from saying what she did or acting the way she did, and though I would have appreciated Alice running interference a little more than she had done, I had to accept that even her trying at all was more than what most people in her position would have done, especially seeing as how I had only just met her and Rosalie was actually her friend.
I sighed, my shoulders slumping in defeat. “Don’t worry about it.” I sighed. It wasn’t really Alice’s fault and the fact that she took the time coming here to apologize spoke volumes of her character. I decided that I would judge her on her actions instead of her flock.
She smiled and walked over to place something on my desk, “An offering of peace.”
I arched a brow. “What exactly is it?”
She grinned, a mischievous smirk gracing her features. “Just in case they get out of hand today.”
