Author’s Note: I know I’m moving a bit fast, but I’m trying to get through Twilight (Because I only saw the movie I didn’t read the book [I didn’t read the book because I had left it on my gerbil’s cage and it got covered in mites {My gerbil died, we couldn’t save him}] so therefore I need to get through Twilight as soon as possible, however, I did read New Moon and Eclipse and I’m about to start on Breaking Dawn. Because I have these reference materials, the rest will go slower. Promise!

Chapter 3
The Effects of a Prom
“Auntie Alice, please don’t do this to me.”
I got cuffed in the back of the head by her hand and winced. My tie was adjusted and she brushed out my tux jacket. She seemed to get very emotional then.
“Rose. Rose come look.” Her voice was almost a whisper but I knew that my mother could hear. When she entered she seemed about to burst into tears if she could.
“Oh Andre, you’ve grown up so fast. It seems like just yesterday Carlisle put you in my arms. Now you’re off to prom.”
I deep blush covered my cheeks and I moved to hug my mother.
“Really mom, I’m only seventeen. I’m still a kid.”
“But soon you’ll be going off to college and then you’ll be becoming a vampire and then after the newborn faze you’ll probably leave us to start your own life somewhere.”
I frowned softly.
“How could I do that mother? This is my family and family is the most important thing to me, I’ll always be where you and dad are.”
She smiled softly and kissed my cheek.
“You promise you’ll dance with me at the prom sweetie?”
I blushed softly and nodded.
“Of course mother, I promise that I’ll dance with you at the prom.”
She smiled brightly and went back to finish getting ready. Aunt Alice shoved me down into a chair and started working on my hair. She made it straight for the night and tied it in the back with a piece of black ribbon before placing a white carnation into my lapel. I sighed softly. Leave it to Alice to go overboard. I didn’t even want to go but I had lost a bet to my father. Apparently I couldn’t eat seventeen hotdogs.
**********************
I frowned as I saw Bella sitting alone on a bench. I started heading towards her before hiding behind a tree as a Quileute boy came to stand beside her, speaking with her. My breath caught in my throat as I took in the boy’s features. He was beautiful.
I blushed softly, remembering how insistent my aunt had been that I come, how she said that if I came, I would find something that would become important to me.
Was this boy supposed to become important to me?
I watched as Edward came to take Bella in and I turned back to the cover of trees, following the boy at a small distance. I winced as I stepped on the only dry branch in all of Forks.
“Who’s there?”
I stepped out from the shadows of the trees and into his line of vision.
“Who the hell are you?”
“Quite rude, I’m surprised you don’t know who I am, but…then again you don’t come to Forks High so you probably wouldn’t.”
The boy growled lightly.
“Just tell me who the hell you are.”
“You’re not gonna like that answer.”
“Just say it.”
“Andre Cullen.”
My name caught him off guard; he blinked a few times before stepping closer.
“You don’t look like them.”
I did look like him though. I looked a lot like Jasper and my mother, but I knew what he meant. Though my skin was pail, it was obviously only pail from the fact that there was no sun in Forks, and my eyes where neither black nor golden, they where a violet blue.
“Yea well, the others looking alike is coincidence, we are all foster children after all.”
He snorted and I smiled.
“But you are right; I’m not like the others. They are too perfect. Me…you put a test in front of me and I completely freeze up.” I frowned, unsure why I had confessed my greatest flaw to the enemy.
“You too?”
I smiled softly and nodded.
“Carlisle says it is probably a stress disorder or something…but here you know so much about me and I don’t even know your name.”
“Oh…sorry about that. I guess I have been a bit rude. I’m Jacob Black.”
Black? So this was the descendent of Ephraim Black, the reason I couldn’t ever go to First Beach when invited. Not that I wanted to go to the beach anyway.
“It is nice to meet you Jacob Black.”
I held out my hand and he hesitantly reached out, taking my own, he seemed shocked.
“Your hand is…really warm.”
“Really? What were you expecting, cold as ice?”
He looked slightly ashamed.
A soft crunch came from the distance.
“Andre? Andre where are you?”
I hid behind Jacob quickly.
“Leave him alone Alice, it’s bad enough you got him dressed up, let’s just go dance.”
Alice sighed but gave in to her husband.
I took a deep breath and moved a bit away from Jacob before pulling the carnation out of my lapel and pushing it into his hair.
“Looks like you got me out of going to the stupid dance, a flower for your troubles then.”
I laughed softly and moved deeper into the forest as I stretched, feeling free from my wicked aunts evil plans.
“Hey! You can’t just go putting flowers in some strange guy’s hair!”
I blinked.
“But you aren’t strange, and I know your name, so what’s wrong with it?”
He pulled the flower out but didn’t let go of it, he seemed to be blushing a bit.
“Oh…I see you’ve heard the rumors then.”
“Which ones, the ones about you personally or about your family’s…otherness.”
I froze.
“The ones about me personally.”
“Everyone has, or almost everyone. I heard some guys talking from where I was waiting for Bella, I…are they true.”
“Well that depends? What are they saying about me now?”
“That…you’re gay.”
I smirked and took the tux jacket off before leaning against a tree. I looked up and closed my eyes.
“Well, are they true?” “You are so impatient. As for if they are true…what do you think?”
I watched as Jacob became a bit uncomfortable. I kicked the ground lightly and I smirked.
“Well, what do you think?”
“You put a flower in my hair man; I mean…that kinda says stuff.”
“So then you would have guessed correctly. Just don’t tell the others, let them ponder it on their own.”
“So then um…are you attracted to me or something?”
I burst out into laughter.
“And that is why everyone has to find out on their own, they would all assume that I’m attracted to them. I’m not the kind of guy that goes after looks. Though if you must know…I do like dark hair.”
He blushed brightly and I was over at his side in a few long strides, my arm over his shoulder.
“Relax. It isn’t easy to tease my family like this, and you are such an easy target. In truth, I’m more interested in a friendship with you than anything else.”
“A friendship? Why are you interested in a friendship with me?”
I blushed brightly now.
“Well…my family is a bit…intimidating, and I was homeschooled until freshman year. I’ve never had a chance…to make friends…but I mean…junior year is pretty much over, and then I’ll be a senior and I don’t want to leave Forks having never had a friend in my life.”
Jacob nodded softly.
“Come down to La Push tomorrow night then. We’re having a bonfire.”
“But…my family is not allowed.”
“Have someone drive you to the boundary line and I’ll come pick you up. You’re not like the others…more…human than they are.”
I smiled brightly before frowning.
“I’ll be there.”
“Go get back to your dance, your sister will probably rip your head off if you don’t show”
*****************************
My father’s hands where tight around the steering wheel of the jeep.
“Call when you are ready to get picked up.”
I nodded and got out of the car, seeing that Jacob was waiting for me in an old truck. I got out of the car and headed over to Jacob, hopping in and putting my seat belt on. My father drove off quickly and I rolled my eyes.
“I take it they don’t like us as much as we don’t like them.”
“I guess they do.”
“And why are you not against us?”
“I’m different.”
“Yes…yes you are.”
I was in a bit of a daze until I realized that I was sitting down in front of a roaring fire. I closed my eyes and took in the scent of burning wood. I smiled and looked to the fire before me, I felt alive, oddly alive, oddly indestructible.
The summer passed in a flash with my new friend Jacob. We more than often spent the nights in front of a fire, and the days we spent exploring the forest. And before either of us knew it, our time became less and less as school started up again.
It was September thirteenth, and I had avoided another one of Alice’s parties, I would apologize to Bella later for missing her birthday. But Jacob wanted to talk to class=GramE>me, he had said it was important.
I drove myself down to La Push, borrowing my father’s jeep to do so. I smiled as I hopped out just outside of Jacob’s house. I knocked once and Jacob answered the door before pushing a flashlight into my chest. I frowned softly as he pulled me towards the forest, his own flashlight lighting his way. I followed him wordlessly and let him push me to a sitting position on a log.
“Jacob…are you okay?”
Jacob was taller than he had been before; he seemed to grow just a bit every day. He was now taller than I was.
“Are you…attracted to me Andre?” I froze.
“Why do you ask?”
“I…I’ve been having dreams lately.”
“What kind of dreams?”
“Odd ones.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Thank you oh so much for elaborating Jacob.”
“Are you attracted to me?”
I sighed.
“Yes, you are attractive Jacob, so sue me. What does it matter?”
“I’m…attracted to you too.”
My heart stilled in my chest as Jacob moved closer to me on the log. He took my hand and I couldn’t only hear his breathing. I closed my eyes as his fingers laced with mine and my heart started beating again with a vengeance. We sat there for a long time, eventually leaning on one another before the sounds of Disturbed filled the forest. I growled lightly and picked up the phone.
“Hello?”
“There’s been an accident.”
My heart stopped again.
“Bella cut herself. Jasper’s a bit…out of it right now. It’s best if you stay out tonight, just in case.”
I nodded softly and closed my eyes, realizing that my father couldn’t see me nod my head.
“I’ll stay here, I’m sure Jacob won’t mind me spending the night.”
I closed the phone and looked over at Jacob who had stiffened.
“Are you…okay with me spending the night?” I don’t know why he wouldn’t be, I had spent the night many times before.
“Yea, I just…don’t want to end up…kissing you before…you’re ready.”
I snorted softly.
“You can kiss me anytime you would like.”
I shouldn’t have said it because I soon found myself pinned to a tree, my heart pounding. Jacob looked at me with intense eyes and I found my legs growing weak. I gasped as his lips met mine and I clung to him, never wanting to let go of him, never wanting to leave his arms.
*************************
“NO! Why can’t Edward leave on his own!? Why do I have to leave to! class=GramE>Just when things are working out for me!”
I hadn’t told them yet, and I had kept my mind shielded from Edward to hide it.
“Andre…sweetie, I’m sure that Jacob will be fine with a long distance friendship.”
I pulled away from my arm.
“Just because Edward is leaving his girlfriend is no reason that I should be forced to leave MY boyfriend!”
My eyes widened and I gulped. Alice hadn’t seen me getting together with Jacob, or if she had, she kept it quiet, because my father’s eyes where bugging out and my mother’s mouth was opened in shock.
“Since when?” “Bella’s birthday?”
“You haven’t….yet have you?”
“Of course not mom. But please, you can’t take me away. I love him you can’t just…”
Edward sat in the corner, looking down at his feet. He hadn’t broken it to Bella yet. Tears where stinging my eyes.
“Edward…please…speak them out of this…I’ll be eighteen soon, please make them let me stay.”
Edward looked away, his eyes closed.
“It’s not safe. And we can’t let Bella have any contact, if you are here than I can never really be forgotten by her.”
I closed my eyes tightly.
“At least…let me stay until Edward leaves…so that…I can say good bye.”
My parents looked to one another and sighed. They loaded everything into the car and left me alone with my uncle. It was hard to breath, but Edward let me take his car to La Push. I parked outside of Jacob’s house and got out, knocking softly on the door. class=GramE>Tears where still falling.
Jacob opened the door and frowned as he shut it behind him.
“I…I can’t stay long…Can we talk in the car?”
Jacob nodded and we got back into the car. I rested my head on the steering wheel and closed my eyes as more tears fell. class=GramE>Jacob’s arms wrapped around me, trying to comfort me.
“What is it?”
“These few months have been the best of my life. Since I met you…I’ve been truly happy. But…”
“But?”
“I have to leave.”
“You’re…breaking up with me.”
I shook my head, more tears falling.
“No, never Jacob. I…I love you. But something happened and now the entire family is leaving…they’ve already left, only Edward and I stayed behind…But I’ll find a way to get back to you, I promise. I’ll be eighteen soon and I can get back to you, and I promise I will, just six more months Jake…please…wait for me.”
Warm lips met my own as my tears continued to fall. He nuzzled his cheek against mine after a moment.
“I’ll wait. class=GramE>But…six months?”
“You have my phone number…call me, every night…”
He nodded softly and kissed me again before my phone rang and more tears fell.
“I…I have to go now.”
He nodded softly and left the car. I drove just outside of the La Push limits and got into the passenger side of the car. I curled up, feeling dead. I don’t know when Edward got in the car, I don’t know when I got to the new place my parents were staying. I didn’t know much of anything and it stayed like that for a very long time.
