Chapter 3
Conflict
“Mmm, smells so good.” The scent of chocolate chip muffins filled the kitchen and I grabbed one of the still warm muffins, chomping on it happily. In truth, I knew that Jasper cheated when it came to making me food, he had Edward and was always able to know what I wanted when I wanted it.
Jasper entered the kitchen with a bright smile on his face.
“Cheater.”
“All is fair in love and war.”
I finished my muffin and walked over to him, kissing his lips lightly before pulling away and stretching.
“So…what are the plans for today?”
Jasper’s arms were around me in an instant and he had lifted me up and rested me over his shoulder. I laughed lightly and bit his butt.
“Bella is coming over to meet the family today, so we all got cleaning to do.”
We arrived in my room a split second later and he sat me down on the bed. My nose was scrunched up. “This is gonna be awkward.” I stood and pulled on a t-shirt before going about cleaning my room and then heading to clean the kitchen.
Jasper and Alice went out to catch a quick bite (no pun intended…or was it…) while the rest of us cleaned and in Esme’s case, cooked. I was working on polishing the piano, making sure that it shined for when Bella arrived. I looked up when I heard the door open, a smile on my face.
“Hello Bella.”
“Hey Adrian. I didn’t think you would be here.”
I scrunched up my nose a bit. “This is my home now.” I saw that Edward’s eyes had widened. “What?”
“It’s shiny.” I looked down at the piano, able to see myself in it. “Yea..yea it is. It was getting kind of dusty so Esme asked me to polish it.”
I watched as the two walked off towards the kitchen and winced when I heard something break. class=GramE>That was my cue to head outside and get some fresh air before the cleaning products got me too lightheaded. I let out a soft purr when arms wrapped around me and lifted me up. I wrapped my legs around Jasper’s waist, my chest pressed firmly to his back as he headed up to the tree that headed to the balcony near the kitchen. Alice jumped down first, smiling at Bella. Jasper jumped down next but didn’t let me down.
I closed my eyes and curled closer to Jasper, causing him to laugh lightly, I fell asleep for the rest of the visit.

I lay on the cold ground, looking up at the dark sky. It was baseball day and Jasper seemed excited at that prospect. He was flipping his bat around and I couldn’t take my eyes off of him.
I watched the game from a distance, Bella was a bit closer, calling when someone was safe or out. I looked up when I heard screeching, a flock of birds had risen from the trees as if afraid of something. I stood slowly and ran closer, hearing other animals leaving the area as well. I turned, seeing that Alice had stopped, her eyes glazed over. My heart started pounding hard as I ran back.
“We’ve got company!”
As if on cue two men and a woman stepped out of the trees. I moved to stand behind Jasper while Bella stood behind Edward, the others surrounded us, all hissing. I looked at how close one of the men was standing to the woman, their hands almost touching, Jasper and I often walked like this at school as to not be too obvious. The two were a couple; that much was obvious to me. Edward looked at me, having heard my thoughts.
“I am Laurent and these two are James and Victoria. Do you have room for three more.”
“A few of us were leaving, you can have their spots.”
The wind blew, and I knew we were screwed; the scent of not only my blood, but also Bella’s was heading right to the three vampires.
“Oh, you brought some snacks.” James’ face changed, becoming more predatory. The others crowded around us, hissing and crouched, ready to spring should any of the three try and attack either Bella or myself.
My eyes grew dark and I knew I wouldn’t survive this, but I hid my thoughts, instead thinking only of protecting Bella.
Jasper grabbed me and Edward grabbed Bella, running us to one of the cars and getting us in before speeding off.
“James is a tracker.” I winced.
“And something tells me we just made this his favorite game.”
Edward nodded.
“He isn’t going to stop coming, he was too thrilled with the reactions that Jasper and I had.”
I nodded and leaned back. Edward left the car with Bella and Jasper and I moved to the front. A short while later we were behind Bella’s truck and Emmett was standing in the truck’s bed.
“How did you know we were going to have company?”
“Stampede. The birds all flew from the trees and it wasn’t hard to hear the deer taking off. Add that to the recent deaths in the area, it isn’t hard to figure out if you know what to look for.”
Jasper and I hopped out of the car and I headed inside of my new home, freezing when I saw Laurent. He had stood too far away from James and Victoria; I knew he wasn’t as close to them, that perhaps he was somewhat on our side. I ran upstairs and packed a few of the essentials that I would need. I ran back downstairs and looked into Jasper’s eyes before we headed into the garage.
“You will be going with Bella, Edward and I can’t be there. Alice and Carlisle will be going with you.”
“What?! No…I’m not leaving you Jazz.”
“You have to; we have to get James and Victoria before they can harm you. Adrian, you are my life, just as Bella is Edward’s. If we lost you…”
I kissed Jasper deeply, a tear slipping down my cheek. He brushed it away before forcing me into the back of the car that Carlisle was driving.

Bella wasn’t saying much on the phone, just yes and no. It had to be James, she would be speaking more in any other case.
Alice and Carlisle had headed down to the lobby to see if there were any messages, Bella came into the room I was in and looked at me.
“He has my mom. I…I have to go. Please…he’ll kill her unless we are both there.”
I knew I was destined to die. I stood and grabbed her hand, leading her class=GramE>past Alice and Carlisle and to a nearby Taxi.

I could see James everywhere, but the stupid mirrors were messing with my head, keeping me from knowing where he was until I was thrown into a wall…hard. I fell to the floor just as hard but pulled myself up and ran forward, intent on getting James away from Bella.
I ended up with my arm twisted at a very awkward angle, the bones snapping before I was thrown away. I could tell he wanted Bella more, but I wasn’t about to let her get killed, if I could just hold him off long enough for Alice and Carlisle.
“What’s the matter, not man enough to kill me? Gotta go for the defenseless girl first?”
Bella lay on the ground with a broken leg, I had to get James away from her.
“It’s okay though, I understand, you must have been too weak to take on any of the guys when you were human, so you started picking on little girls.”
That did it. My eyes widened as his teeth dug into my neck. It was the most painful thing I had ever experienced in my life. He let me drop, barely taking any blood, but I couldn’t move, there was too much pain.
I would have cussed, he was heading for Bella. I turned onto my stomach and started crawling forward using my good arm. It hurt so much to move, I felt like I was burning. Glass rained down as Edward arrived. I watched as Bella was thrown, and then bitten on the wrist. I forced myself closer to her and forced myself to remove my belt, wrapping it tightly around the top of her leg, using it to stop the blood. My vision was getting darker, and the burning was only getting stronger.
“Don’t die Bells. Don’t die.”
The last thing I saw was the face of my angel before the burning overpowered me completely and I could see nothing but red.

Jasper’s POV

Edward was far ahead of me, I knew he would get their first, I could only hope that Adrian was unharmed. I pushed myself faster and faster, leaving the rest of my family behind, my mind focused on only one thing, Adrian.
Faster. Faster. Faster! I jumped through the broken window and my heart would have stopped if it had been beating in the first place. Bella was on the ground, Adrian’s belt tied tightly around her leg. She was bleeding a lot, and she had been bitten. But Adrian’s wound was worse, a large bite on his neck, and by the look of him, the poison had been coursing through him a lot longer, already filling his system, but he had pushed past the pain to keep Bella alive.
“Adrian!” I couldn’t help the cry of pain that left my lips as I raced to him, my eyes wide as he looked up at me. He smiled before his eyes fell closed.
Alice, Rosalie, Esme, and Emmett were taking care of James. Edward was beside Bella.
“C…Carlisle, what do we do?”
Carlisle’s heart was breaking, I could feel that much.
“There is nothing we can do to help Adrian, he is too far gone, in three days he will awaken as one of us.”
I didn’t hear the rest of what he said. I had taken to resetting Adrian’s broken arm so it didn’t heal wrong. I pulled him against my chest, hoping that my cold skin would help with the burning pain.
“I’m so sorry Adrian. I failed you. I’m so sorry.”

Adrian

The family curse had stolen me away from my angel. I guess I was in hell now, the pain, the fire in my very veins…it had to be hell because it sure as hell wasn’t heaven.
The curse…it had been placed on my great great great grandfather. Everyone in my family had been dying by a certain aged since then. None made it past age fifty. And me…the last of the family…why not take me before I was eighteen?
No…
I was eighteen now, I had been eighteen the day I died.
Some birthday present. A one way trip to hell.
“Adrian…”
That voice…the voice of my angel. Had he followed me here? Had he followed me to this place of fire and pain?
“He should be awake soon. The venom has almost finished changing him.”
Venom? Changing? Could it be that this fire was the vampire venom and that I was becoming like my angel?
I fought to get closer to the voices, but they stayed far away. I tried to move, but I couldn’t.
“He’s already become so beautiful from the change; by the time it’s done you’ll have to beat his admirers off with a stick.”
“He was always beautiful.”
“Yes…he was. He is. I got what you wanted me to get. He can hear us now so you know, talk to him, it may help him push the pain away.”
What had Alice gotten? Why did Jasper want something? Was it…? Hmm…
“Adrian, it’s me, Jasper. Can you hear me?”
I couldn’t move, so I fought to move anything. My index finger moved slightly and I could hear Jasper sigh in relief.
“When you wake up you and I will leave here, we can’t stay, not with this change. We’ll go someplace that doesn’t have many people so that you aren’t tempted to kill, does that sound good.”
I moved my finger again and I knew he had to be smiling.
He told me I had been out for two days and that soon the pain would be over. Alice had been right, Jasper’s voice helped through the pain.
When the pain fully left I was reluctant to move, afraid that the pain would come back if I did. My eyes opened slowly and I saw Jasper perfectly. He looked so different, he was covered in scars. I had seen them, barely, seeing them in bright light. I brushed one lightly before sitting up and kissing the one over his eyebrow.
Jasper’s arms wrapped around me, and his skin no longer felt cold to me. I curled up against him, felling very content. I looked around at everything, seeing it all in a new light, seeing it all truly perfectly; I could hear the silent footsteps of my family as they came up the stairs. I smiled at them softly, hugging each of them.
I was a true Cullen now, but I didn’t care, all I cared about was that I could spend forever with Jasper.

One Month Later
Jasper and I sat underneath the full moon on a beautiful secluded beach. The waves were lapping against our bare feet. It was…perfect.
Jasper turned to me and kissed my lips softly before moving to kneel in front of me. He removed something from his pocket and smiled.
“Adrian…I love you so much, you are my other half. Will you marry me?”
