Chapter 3
They sat at a booth in a darkened corner. Esme sat beside her blocking her in and Jasper slid in across from her with Edward in front of Esme. Alice took her time in looking over the menu, mainly so she wouldn’t have to look at Jasper. When the waitress came by she ordered a steak, fries and a salad with tea to drink. The Cullen’s all asked for water and the waitress disappeared. “So what did you mean about staying human?” She asked finally looking up but looking to Edward for the answer.
“The man who was tracking you was not human. You knew that.” Edward stated and she nodded. “Neither was Richard.”
“I knew he wasn’t but he wouldn’t tell me what he was.”
“We are all the same.” Esme told her quietly.
“What are you?” Alice asked. There was only curiosity but no fear.
“We have been called many names.” Jasper answered. “We are immortal and we are perfect hunters. We survive off a different diet.” He added with a grin.
Alice caught a glimpse of the truth behind the words. She saw the family running through the forest and hunting animals. She saw them feeding off the blood of the animals. She saw them working as a pack and living among humans with the latter totally unaware of the danger living so close.
“She sees.” Edward said. “She just saw what we are.”
“We are not allowed to say it. You have to say it for us.” Jasper said watching her intently.
“Vampires.” Alice said softly. “You are vampires. But you don’t drink from humans. You drink from animals.” Jasper nodded in response. “But not all are like you. The one hunting me; he wanted to kill me and drink my blood. But Richard was like you.” She guessed. “He didn’t attack humans either.”
“Yes.” Esme answered. “Richard knew of us. He wanted to protect you. He said you were important to us all. He said that somehow, you would save our family. He told us you would be an asset to the Cullen family. He told us of your family and that you wouldn’t be missed. He asked us to take you in and care for you as a daughter. You don’t know us but you do know that we are good. Would you be willing to join our family?” She watched as the girl’s brow furrowed in concentration.
Edward let her have her vision without him telling the others. He felt the weight of the decision. If she went with them, she would be an equal of their family. But eventually, eventually she would be turned. A few years from now. If she chose not to join them, he saw her destitute and dead within a year. James would find her quickly. Again if she went with them, she and Jasper would be destined to be together for eternity. He would do anything to protect her. Her choice was simple. To become as they are or to be killed by another of their kind.
“It doesn’t have to be like that.” Edward said softly. “We wouldn’t turn you unless you wanted us too. Carlisle usually doesn’t turn people unless he has no other choice.”
Alice smiled slightly. “I die either way.” She said simply. “One is just much faster than the other. In one way I die alone and in the other I am surrounded by friends and love and am reborn. I don’t really think I have much of a choice here.” She smiled wryly. “I guess I have to pick family over alone.”
“Well then, Alice. Welcome to the Cullen family. Carlisle and I are the parents of this group. Emmet and Rosalie are our two other children. For intents and purposes we say that Rosalie and Jasper are twins and their last name is Hale. We do this because they look so much alike people assume it anyway. Plus it helps explain why Emmet and Rosalie are mates. They have been together for almost 50 years. When they start out at a new school every ten years or so; it is easier to say why they can date. We have a beautiful home in Forks Washington. It’s in the forest and isolated but lovely. You will have your own room there and when the others start high school there, we will enroll you as well. How old are you dear?”
“Sixteen.” Alice answered softly. She wondered how old the others were. But that was kind of an impolite question.
“We are 16 as well.” Edward answered for them. “At least right now. Emmett and Rosalie are 17 and Esme and Carlisle are 33. We can only stay in a town so long.”
“After awhile, us not aging becomes noticeable.” Jasper added. He watched as she took a bite of her steak. She looked like a version of a pixie or fairy. She was so tiny but stunningly beautiful. Her black hair was cropped very short and her blue eyes sparkled. She looked so fragile yet she had such strength to have withstood as much as James had dished out.
As soon as Esme had welcomed her to the family he felt her overwhelming happiness. She belonged somewhere. She looked over at Jasper and remembered her vision. This man was going to be with her. She felt a burst of attraction go through her.
They could all smell her arousal. Their heightened sense of smell made it easy but it hit Jasper harder than the other two. His eyes got huge and even blacker than they were previously. His nostrils flared as he tasted the air. Her arousal was the most intoxicating scent he’d ever tasted.
Edward looked between the two of them and then over at Esme who had her eyebrow cocked. “I don’t think it’s going to be too long before they become mates. I don’t even think he’ll make it until she changes. She’ll still be human.”
“Umm…” Alice said flushing a bright red. “Could you get out of my head please? That’s very distracting that you know everything I am thinking.”
“I may know your thoughts,” Edward said with a smirk, “But Jasper can feel everything you are feeling.”
Alice looked over at Jasper in shock. “Seriously?” She asked anxiously.
“And we can all smell your reaction to him.” Edward added.
“Edward! Leave her alone.” Jasper said in a low voice as his nostrils again flared. He sent a wave of calm at her. He felt her respond immediately. “Please excuse my brother. He feels loneliness more than the rest of us. He longs to find love.”
Alice’s gaze centered on Edward and her eyes went out of focus. “He will find the one for him. In Forks. Not too soon but not too far away either. She will take him by surprise and his reaction to her will be strong. He will be unable to be away from her. She will become part of this family. She will become very good friends with me.”
Esme let out a tinkling laugh. “Well, Edward, it seems being in Forks will be very good for you this time.” It snapped Alice out of her trance. She finished her food in silence. She was just taking all of it in. They refused to let her pay the bill and she followed them back out to the car deep in thought. When they got back to the car Esme suggested that Jasper sit in the back with Alice so he could help her sleep. It was going to be a couple more hours before they got to the house. Edward stifled a laugh at the look of panic on Jasper’s face but he moved to the seat behind Edward.
Alice sat as far across the backseat as she could from Jasper. Her thoughts were in turmoil. She never seemed to fit in anywhere. Would this family actually accept her and love her? It seemed like a dream come true. She had never felt loved and protected. Even from her own family. They found out she was having visions and instead of finding it a gift; they considered it a curse. Her mother hadn’t even looked at her when she’d put her in that place. The doctors were free to do as they wanted with her because she was awarded to them with custody. Her parents had signed away the rights to her. She’d seen an obituary in the paper that one of the orderlies cruelly cut out and gave to her. They had pretended she had died.
It was easier for them to pretend she was dead then to admit they had a freak for a daughter. The hospital was horrible. The orderly had raped her repeatedly. If she had a vision in front of any of them; they gave her electric shock therapy. Richard was the first person who had been kind to her in years. He looked after her; trying to make sure she ate enough and that she have normal food as often as he could arrange it. He’d broken her out a week before just telling her that she was safer away from the asylum. Slowly he told her that a psychotic man was after her. He had broken her out to save her.
She stayed in his apartment for almost a week before he came home frantic the day before. He said that the man was almost to them. He wasn’t sure he would be able to protect her but he knew a family who could. He handed her a fistful of cash and told her to go seek out the Cullen family. He pushed her out the door. She didn’t want to leave the first place she’d ever felt comfortable but he made her. As the door closed behind her, she heard him on the phone. Then she just ran.
“Jasper, help her sleep.” Edward said softly. Alice looked at him in confusion before feeling Jasper’s cold hand touch hers. She felt a spark of electricity and could see in his eyes that he did too.
“Just relax, Alice.” He told her. She smiled at how her name had sounded coming out of his mouth. “I’m going to put you to sleep now. Don’t worry, you are safe.” She felt the intense sleepiness settle over her and just before she fell asleep she put her head down on his chest and her arms wrapped around him. “She feels safe!” He said in surprise.
“It’s little wonder.” Edward said. He told them the thoughts that had been in her head of the asylum and her escape. “Richard told her to trust us and so she does.”
“They gave her electric shocks when she had visions?” Esme asked with her heart breaking for what the fragile little girl behind her had been through. Humans could be so cruel to each other.
“He raped her?” Jasper said angrily, his whole body tensing. He would love to meet the man who had done that to her. “And her parents left her in that place and pretended she was dead?” He wanted to kill. He wanted to drink from humans again. Anyone who had hurt the little pixie curled up against him. He felt some emotion he wasn’t used to and couldn’t place.
“Protective, Jazz. You feel protective of her.” Edward filled in. Jasper just nodded and stroaked the sleeping girls hair gently. Esme looked on with a smile.
“I’m so happy for you Jasper.” She said softly and silence settled over the car.
