Chapter 2 Friend
Keeping his mind off the pain coursing through his entire body was becoming more of a task thanks to the continued bump and jolt of the cart as it passed down the road towards town. Watching the trees pass by Kodi started to think about what life would be like now that Lile was leaving for good.
No more being up in till dawn and at times not getting any sleep because of the unsatiable appitite his brother contained, no matter what Lile never seemed to be satisfied always demanding another round on his younger brothers very pained backside. His throat still hurt from last nights viscious attack at the back of his neck.
Nothing was ever good enough.
Of course now that Lile was leaving Mother Dearest and her temper will probably be taken to even further acts of torment and much more often since, Lile wouldn't need at least some life in him for whatever it was that he chose to do to Akodian at night.
'The Creator forsaken worman'll probably kill me within the week!'
Not even noticing as their horse drawn cart passed through the gates leading into Borsted, one of the most western towns on the borders of Cairhien and Andor close enough so that there was a mixture of Adorans and regular folk about the now prosperous town with even a few Aiel here and there. The tall men and women in warriors garb that allowed them to blend in almost anywhere, none seemed to mind passing thourgh the crowed on some bussiness of their own. Some even stopping to have a half hearted and familiarized jest with a couple townsfolk at their stands and purchasing a few vegetables or even some partially ripened fruits.
To Akodian this all seemd to be the new order of things due to the Dragon and his rule of these lands. 'Rand Al'thor is a great man. He has overcome everything that has stood in his way to becoming the Hero that he now is. I wish I could be like that! If only I could get away from this wretched woman.'
The cart was slowing as it drew nearer to the Inn that his mother so often frequented whenever they were in town.
"Lile sweatheart, come with me. Your father has told me he has some order of bussiness with the blacksmith and we will be awhile in here. You may go with your father Akodian." with that she stepped down from the cart and made her way towards the building.
Lile on the other hand stood and grabbed the few possessions he had taken, turned to Kodi. They just sat there motionless for some time staring each other right in the eye. Then Lile winked and jumped out of the cart belongings and all landing greacefully beside it.
"Goodbye father." he said mock repectfully and made his way inside at a brisk walk.
Akodian smiled at the angered mumbling coming from the direction his father who was watching the door that his brother just entered for minutes cursing to himself all the while and a few particularly gaining looks of astonishment from a passerby who stopped face turning white then hurried away not looking for fear of some wrath the angry man had.
Clearing his voice from lack of use "Um father." he didn't know what to say "Mother said-" his father jumped at that "Your Mother said!! yeah I know know what she said no need to rush me." whipping the horses with more force than was strictly needed his father continued to mumble.
Akodian on the other hand had to latch himself to the seat with his arms to keep from being bounced out of the cart. Men and woman alike jumped out of the way of the cart as much as the furious look on the drivers face. None complained, and not even the Aiel that swiftly moved off the road spared a second to holler some obscenities his way once they saw the man.
Too scared of his fathers anger to even try and calm the man into slowing down Kodi just held on for dear life while the cart jolted and jumped gritting his teeth the whole way.
Suddenly he was no longer moving.
He peered up at his father who let out a puff of air and at last grumbled "THAT woman!" and reverted to his calm self once more.
"Alright thats that then. Kodi it will take some time do get these orders and the like finished with the blacksmith and he is an old friend besides so while I catch up with Carter you have some time to yourself. Here take this-" handing Kodi five coppers. More than he had seen in one place during his whole lifetime. "- and meet me back here no later than evening. Your mother will be occupied until a little after then but we shant make her wait." he shuddered at the memory of the one time he HAD made her wait.
Repressing a shiver of his own he jumped out of the cart to land on wobbling legs and barely stopped the yelp of pain that attacked his sore muscles.
"Yes father I understand. I will be back."
Then he was off walking as briskly as he could without trotting or out right running. Passing by some cheerful farmers talking loudly together about the beautiful weather after the seemingly neverending winter. "Its the Dragon I tell ya 'e is a miracle worker that man!" gaining some nods of agreement then another "An' wha' abou' them Aes Sedai maybe thays a did it, I 'ear that one or two of them are even chil' hood friends of the Lord Dragon!. I 'eared many things from this old innkeeper I use ta' see inside Caemelyn. He sayd many thing tho even tha' the Lord Dragon imself even stayed in his inn this onetime that HIS Inn housed the Dragon Reborn!" the others roared with laughter at that one. Mocking the man all the while for spreading such rabble about the Dragon. As if Rand Al 'thor would stay in a meager Inn!
Chuckling to himself at that Kodi continued on walking with no specific direction in mind. He began whistling to himself some old nonsense his father would whistle doing chores it was a catchy tune reminding him of a tavern and some rowdy drinking.
Now realizing he could use a drink he turned a corner to make his way to the only other Inn far accross town from the one his mother was staying at. Kodi, now walking faster turned to look up at the sky only to see that he had plenty of time and--walked into a brick wall. Not even stumbling he fell backwards and stopped in midair, gazing up into the bluest sky he had ever seen.
Hanging there for minutes before realizing that those weren't blue skies and that wasn't the rope he tripped over wrapped around his waist.
"I I I aam so so- sorry." and he almost tried to apologize more but the pure smile on the others face made him stop.
"Its my fault actually. I should not have just stopped like that. I am the one who should be saying sorry." ever so gently he was set on his feet only to have to steady himself on the brick wall that had the calm voice of a clear cool lake.
Realizing he was acting foolish he quickly let go and stood back a pace, trying not to look the whelp that he felt. Smiling cheerfully "well then I guess its both our fault. I am still sorry though and this festering headache should teach me to not walk into brick walls like yourself." grinning even wider he chuckled. The other only reddened sorely embarrassed and put his eyes down. "I uh am very sorry too ..I feel terrible for hurting your head...uhh if I could buy you a meal and a mug to make up for it .." those eyes looked up pleading and almost watering like a rock thrown into a pond. The ripples were intoxicating.
Now breathless Akodian quickly tried to right the wrong he had just done. "It was a jest! I was merely trying to say that you are strong it was a compliment, I am fine, in fact I have gotten worse this morning already that bump right there was barely a jolt in fact you probably nocked some sense into me." he tried to smile and noticed he only made things worse. "and yes I would like to accept your offer of food and drink, to show that I am fine and that you didnt hurt me. My name is Akodian, but I would like it if you called me Kodi. My mother calls me Akodian." he shifted uncomfortably at the mention of his mother and tried to ignore the chill that came with the womans face.
"I am Donvaine, and I am happy that you have accepted my offer. Now I am staying at an Inn that is not too far down this street. The food is good and the prices fair. Master Burris is a good man and he will not question a meal and drink."
Akodian grinned. "Yes I know Burris Marley well he is a comical fellow with many tales. I like him much." Akodian forbore telling Donvaine that he had been heading there when all this happened.
In short order they made there way to the Inn, talking cheerfully to one another. Once they were seated at one of the many empty tables in the clean and well kept common room the innkeeper a bustling greay haired man with a cheery smile always on his friendly face came and greeted them with pleasure in his brown eyes. "Well Kodi I don't see you in here very often. I am surprised your mother let you leave her, and you seem to be well. I am happy about that." He turned to Donvaine, and spoke less cheerully. "Doesn't come in here much this lad, his parents are not too apt to let him out of their sight when they come into town, but I don reckon that is my bussiness. However I am always happy to see him, quick minded and always pleasant whenever he do come around. A good boy! Now what can I get you two lads and mind you it is on me, like I said I am always happy to see Kodian."
In short they gave there order for two of the days specials and soon had heaping plates of steaming beef covered in very tasty gravey along side some potatoes and sliced carrots. With two large mugs of delicious mead. Trying to shovel the food and not choke was a challenge, but worth it for the food was more delectable than it looked, the mead almost as enticing.
They talked a bit as they ate nonsense speak of things they liked to do and of the types of things they enjoyed. Even a little of their hopes for the future. They found they had much in common. Akodian for one was more than happy to have met this man, they were quickly becoming good friends and he had never had one before.
Once talk of fun was done Donvaine was quiet for some time before conversing again and when he did speak it was in a quiet and serious voice, like he was innocently curious about the answer.
"What did Burris mean when he spoke about your parents as if he didn't care too much for them Kodi? I saw you shift your feet earlier when you mentioned your mother." Asked as solemn as Akodian had yet heard from the slightly older man.
All appititte lost at the change in his new found friend and the mention of his mother. Akodian forbore answering as long as he could.
"Well I can't really say, nobody in town really likes my mother she doesn't try to be friendly to anybody excepting Lile. He is my older brother." wincing at the throb in his nether regions at the thought of Lile he continued on. " She is very harsh and unloving. Though I try to hide it when we come into town and I am allowed to go off on my own. Burris can tell though I try to hide the evidence and it backs up his dislike."
Donvaine also having stopped eating looked at him with something new in his eyes, concern, fear for Kodi, caring. "Kodi I am so very sorry for the pain you have had to go through. I know we just met but I would like to offer that if you need anything night or day I will do whatever in my power to help you. I will be staying longer than I expected and if you ever need anything. I am here for you." Kodi meant to thank Donvaine for his offer and tell him if he did need anything then he would ask, but at that precise moment he looked out the window into the sky noticing that the sun was well passed its zenith and he had very few moments to get back with his father in time. He jumped up and with a hurried thanks and a quick farewell hurried out of the Inn up the street and around the corner ignoring the curious stares and questioning looks from the crowd.

Donvaine continued to stare at the spot in the street where Kodi had just run off to and wondered whether he should follow him, but realized too late that he couldn't know where brown haired mop had dissapeared to.
Returning his eyes to the seat that the boy had just left, he thought through the last few hours with the coal eyed youth he had come to know.
"That poor boy. He is such a good lad too, it is a shame he has such horrid parents." Surprised at the echo of his thoughts he looked up at the innkeeper. "Do you think he will be alright, Burris?"
The older man looked suddenly haggard and weary dropped unceremoniously into the chair previously occupied by the conversations topic.
"That lad would be fine if a tree fell on him, such a spirit he has but with his older brother going off to learn how to channel I fear it won't be long before that woman kills the boy or worse breaks him, she is so close to either as it is. With Lile gone there is no telling what she will do to him now."
Donvaine realized then what it was he must do "Master Burris I have a boon to ask of you...." as the young lad revealed what he wanted to do Burris Marley inwardly smiled, he had hoped this stout Donvaine would do this. Akodian made a lifelong loyal friend in this boy and none to soon either. All would be well after all.

Kodi now in much higher spirits took the ride back with much more ease than he should have the jumping and jolting barely reaching his euphoric state. His mind was only on one thing.
Donvaine.
His friend. He had actually made a friend.
'Brick walls indeed!'
In all his life this was the first time he was every actually happy he had gotten hurt the now lumpy bruise hidden beneath his bangs on his forehead was a reminder that it wasn't just a dream.
The cart lurched and tossed him like a rag doll. He didn't mind but he shifted uncomfortably anyway and his arm brushed against the letter in his waistband under his shirt. Hopefully carefully hidden like he hoped.
Now his mind changed topics.
His father had acted strange on the way back to the Inn to get his mother. Lile was gone. Thankfully without a dramatic goodbye behind a bush or in a loft of some sort that would have made the ride back painful and fresh. Thankfully his mother never noticed the letter hidden about his person.
Turning his thoughts away from his mother he pondered the strangeness of his fathers actions. His mind occasionally returning to Donvaine for a moment before jumping back to his father.
As the sun began to set Kodi still didn't know what his fathers words meant. Whatever happens? What did his father mean?

During the dwindling hours left of light the men were unsaddling and brushing down the horses after their long day the animals were covered in sweat, they fed the animals put them inside the barn then set about gathering firewood.
Watching them from the far side of the house the woman in black told the Tall man cloaked in shadows that she would kill her husband and son. After which she would make her way to Caemelyn. "I hear that Elayne is now Queen and every ruler needs their Aes Sedai advisor." her shoulders shaking with quiet mirth.
The Myrdraal replied. "Good and I shall go home and tell the master that he need not worry about this runt of yours." That with a pointed look to emphasize that failure meant much worse than death.
He was giving this woman something she dearly wanted something she had been waiting for a long for. The ending of the farm life, and the renewal of her old one in service to the Master.
It is said that the eyeless never smile but while the two creatures of the Dark Lord took some time to say goodbye the Myrdraal let his grimace fall and a small grin appeared as he reached his climax.
