Edward’s POV
It was a warm day in early spring in Chicago. The sky was cloudy, like most days, as I had come to both accept and expect when I woke every morning. Today was different, however, than every other morning. Today I was going to start my residency at the Chicago Hospital. I was to be working under Dr. Carlisle Cullen and I didn’t want to be late on my first day.
Breathless, I opened the door to the main waiting room and approached the main desk.
“Good morning.” I said to the receptionist. “I’m Edward Mason, I’m starting today under Dr. Cullen…”
The receptionist smiled at me and stood up.
“Good morning, Dr. Mason. My name is Katherine. I’ll go get Dr. Cullen for you. Just a moment please.” The young girl, she could not have been much older than my own 21 years, left down the hall way.
Only a few minutes later I could see Katherine returning, and being followed by the most beautiful man that I had ever seen. He could not have been 30 with pale skin, blond hair, and as he came closer, I noticed the most breathtaking golden eyes. Not bronze or hazel but golden.
“Hello, you must be Dr. Mason. I’m Dr. Cullen but please call me Carlisle. Are you ready to start your first shift at Chicago?”
I smiled and nodded.
“Yes, thank you Doctor. And please, call me Edward.”
Carlisle smiled and I knew in that instant that I was damned. I knew in that instant that I loved him.

Carlisle’s POV
Katherine came to get me about an hour after I arrived for my shift.
“Dr. Cullen. The new resident doctor is here. He is supposed to working under you and is waiting up front.”
I smiled at the young girl and heard her heart beat pick up.
“Thank you, Katherine. If you can wait a moment, I will walk up with you.”
I set my clipboard down and followed her up to her receptionist desk. A bronze haired, emerald eyed, young man stood in a dark blue suit. I approached and greeted him and knew that if my heart could still beat it would have burst from my chest. It would take all my all well trained control while working with the amazingly beautiful Dr. Edward Mason.
***
The first months of Edward’s residency at Chicago hospital seemed to fly by. We often took our rounds together and I found that that despite his youth, he was extremely intelligent. An avid reader and fan of all things musical and extremely good at reading people, even when they thought they were being secretive.
I never knew I would be so grateful for this talent of his until one day. A young woman came into the hospital with her husband. She was pregnant and had fallen, causing a small hairline fracture in her leg.
Sitting on the examination table Esme Evenson was all to aware of her husband’s protective, and extremely possessive, stance behind her. She had her eyes fixed only on me, despite that it was making her husband only more furious, and it was making me extremely uncomfortable.
“Now, Mrs. Evenson…”
“Please call me Esme.”
I cleared me throat.
“Mrs. Evenson. Please tell me again what happened.”
Mr. Evenson tightened his hand on Esme’s shoulder and a wince crossed her face for the shortest fraction of a second before the smile replaced it again.
“I was preparing dinner, waiting for Charles to get home from work. He was coming up the stairs and I was so excited to see him that I became a little careless in my cooking. I tripped over my apron springs that had become loose and tripped into the stove and the hot food. I always was rather accident prone.”
I looked up at Mr. Evenson and the hard glare in his eye, fixed on his wife, made me nervous. Still, her story did match the slight hairline fracture in her leg. I set it and explained the proper care.
“Now, Mr. Evenson, sir. Due to your wife’s delicate condition I would also like to check the health of the young one. This procedure can be rather embarrassing so I was hoping to perform this in privacy with Mrs. Evenson, if you do not object.”
He grunted before grabbing his hat and storming out of the examination room, slamming the door behind him.
Once alone, I turned towards Esme Evenson.
“Mrs. Evenson, I know that you didn’t trip in the kitchen. How did you really hurt yourself?”
The fear in her eyes and the way her heart jumped told me I was correct in my assumption.
“Please don’t tell my husband, I should not have made him angry, it’s all my fault…”
“Shhh, Esme, I’m not going to tell him. I am concerned for you. You’re about to be a mother and it will not be healthy for you or the babe to be in a house of fear. Is there anything I can do for you?”
Esme jumped off the table and wrapped her arms around my torso. She hugged me as closely as her rounded stomach and weak human arms would allow. With her face buried into my shoulder, I tried as gently as I could to escape her grasp.
“Take me away from him. Save me from him. Don’t make me go back there. Please.”
“You know that I can’t do that. He’s your husband and I…”
“You have your own companion?”
“No, but I am not…available to you either. I’m sorry Mrs. Evenson, I cannot help you in the way you wish. Come, I’ll take you to your husband, your babe is fine.”
Edward’s POV
I watched as an angry man stormed out of the examination room that Carlisle was in with his patient. A few minutes later Carlisle exited as well, holding the door open for a very pregnant young woman. She looked up at Carlisle with hope and wish shining in her eyes. I did not hear the conversation in the room but the look of lust in her eyes was unmistakable.
Carlisle looked very uncomfortable. I couldn’t watch him suffer in silence. I knew the subject was very taboo but I believed Carlisle to be open minded enough to understand my ploy. And if my plan worked the way I wanted it to, then I was even surer that he would not object.
Walking over to them I placed me hand lightly on the small of Carlisle’s back.
“Good afternoon Ma’am, I hope you don’t mind the interruption, I promise I’ll be brief. Carlisle, I just wanted to confirm that we’re meeting up after our shifts. It has been a long day and I know I am looking forward to a warm meal and pleasant company.”
Carlisle looked at me in confusion before understanding my attentions.
“Of course Edward. I’m looking forward to our plans later. I’ll meet you when our shifts are finished. Please excuse me while I take Mrs. Evensaon to her husband.”
I nodded my head and bid good-bye to *Mrs.* Evenson. I smiled as I turned around and waited for Carlisle to find me.
Carlisle’s POV
I couldn’t believe what Edward was doing. His hand was scalding hot on the small of my back and I could feel Esme’s eyes drawn to where Edward’s fingers were rubbing circles into my cold skin.
Edward bid us good-bye and I shifted uncomfortably as I walked Esme up to the front of the hospital.
I would make sure to talk to you him later. First I would tell him my full opinion of his little stunt, and then I would be forever thankful for getting the energetic and imaginative Mrs. Evenson off my back.
I could feel Esme’s emotions as we walked to the front. She was embarrassed by her forwardness, uncomfortable by my display in personal tastes, and a small feeling that I could not identify but I had a feeling that I had not seen the last of Esme Evenson.
Edward’s POV
A few days after the encounter with Mr. and Mrs. Evenson, I was performing my rounds, and couldn’t help but think back to dinner that evening. Carlisle did meet me after our work and we did go out for a meal together. Carlisle claimed he wasn’t hungry but did enjoy a glass of wine while I ate.
Carlisle had also given me a thorough lecture on how I had acted very unprofessionally and that while the times where changing I needed to remember that the hospital was run by conservative religious men and the behavior I displayed would not be tolerated on a long term basis. He then showed me a smile that stretched from ear to ear and said that he would forever by in my debt as he just didn’t know what to do when Mrs. Evenson had thrown herself onto him in such a lusty and wonton manner.
The way he looked at me as we shared dinner and drinks that night was different as well. Even though he believed my actions and motives to be fictional, to assist him in a unfortunate event, it had still changed the way we reacted to each other. I could only wonder where this would lead.
***
Carlisle stormed into the doctor’s lounge. I could tell that he had just had an argument with another physician. His shoulders were tense and his eyes were black. I tried not to be obvious in the attention I was giving him. He paced the length of the room for a bit before reaching up to loosen his tie and unbutton the first two buttons of his collared shirt.
It was at that point that I noticed the harsh scars on the side of Carlisle’s neck. Raised and red and twisted, they looked painful and violent. I couldn’t help the gasp of shock that escaped me lips. Carlisle looked over to me, his eyes widening as he finally realized my presence in the room – having thought he was alone up until that moment. He locked his gaze with mine for a moment until his hand flew to his neck and blocked my sight. Turning his back to me Carlisle quickly buttoned his shirt and fixed his tie again before exiting the room.
I watched the door for a long time after he left, hoping he would return. But he never did and then my lunch was over and I returned to my shift as well.
***
I did not have a chance to speak with Carlisle again for several days. Whether it was our shifts that kept us apart or his avoiding me, I would never know, but it was nearly a week later before I was able to talk to him again. Cornered in the doctor’s lounge I put myself between him and the door, forcing him to listen to me.
“We all have demons in our past, Carlisle. Whatever secrets you have, they are yours to keep. I do not judge you.”
The look in his eyes made me think my heart would stop. The desperation in his golden orbs was horrible. I knew that he knew what I was referring to. In a voice hardly above a whisper he answered me.
“It’s more than just my neck.”
“You do not have to tell me unless you wish but I haven’t changed my good opinion of you. You’re my friend, Carlisle, and the pains of your past won’t alter that.”
He smiled at me and nodded.
“I need to make my rounds but I will tell you when I can. It might not be today or even tomorrow, but I will tell you.”
With that Carlisle slipped around me and out the door. I smiled to myself. Little by little I was chipping away at the wall he had around himself. He may not be aware of its existence, but I was, and I was going to tear it down, no matter what it took.
Carlisle’s POV
It was a few days later that Edward cornered me. I had been avoiding him but after he saw the monster that I was, I couldn’t look him in the eyes any more. But he cornered me and what he said, how he still considered me a friend to him… That changed everything. Granted he didn’t know the real truth, and I would only tell him a highly edited version, but I would tell him.
I walked outside into the hot June air and saw Edward sitting in the shade of the building. Spanish Influenza had struck the city and the sick were coming in by the thousands. It was hard to catch a spare minute and when you could the only quiet one could find was outside the hospital walls. I sat down next to Edward and place my hands on my knees.
He looked over at me and nodded but didn’t say anything. I think he knew I was getting ready to tell him my story.
“My family owns a large estate in rural England. It’s a very small town, just over 100 residents, and the nearest doctor is hours away. It was many years ago when I was younger, and couldn’t sleep, and out late one evening. An animal attacked me. I don’t have a good memory of the event and to this day no one has caught the beast. Its claws ripped my side, from rib cage to hip, and it bit into my neck, tearing it open.
“I was unconscious for three days; my family thought I would surely die. I didn’t. Since there was no doctor to care for me the cook at the local tea house cleaned my wounds and the town’s local seamstress put the stitches in – nearly a thousand in total. Because of the crude job the wound has never fully healed – it never will. I’ve extremely self conscious of my scars, it is one of the reasons that I always wear a collar and tie, regardless of how hot the building becomes. I don’t like the stares people give me and avoid prying eyes as much as possible.”
Edward placed a welcome hand on my arm.
“Carlisle, what you have told me only makes your braver and stronger in my eyes. I told that we all have scars. To recover from such an attack and be determined to help other people, to try to make it so no one else has to suffer needlessly the way you did, is truly selfless and heroic. You are a good man Carlisle Cullen.”
Edward’s hand remained resting on my shoulder as he settled back against the side of the building again. I didn’t move from his contact as I too leaned back to relax in the shade of the hospital walls. Once again our relationship had changed and no one knew where it was headed.
