CHAPTER THREE
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Struggling to carry all the bags through the front door without dropping them seemed like a much harder thing to do than I originally thought. I manage somehow, luck on my side for once. I let the bags fall onto the ground, letting out a relived sigh as I did.
“David?” I called to the empty house. Worry creep into me. I knew it was alright, but I wasn’t with him, so how could I be absolutely positive.
I quickly emptied the bags contents and put everything in the cupboards. The house was quiet and eerie. I needed to do something that would cheer me up. I pulled out my phone dialling Alexis’s number.
“Hi, you have rung Alexis, sorry I can’t take your call at the moment but leave your name and I’ll get back to you ASAP. Beep.”
“Alexis Carson, I really needed some girl talk, but no you’re probably screwing the hot neighbour.” I laughed at the image of Alexis spying on her neighbour. “Anyway call me back when you get this, and I want details on Mr. Neighbour.” I laughed again before pressing the end button.
I dialled a different number this time.
“Hello” a sweet deep voice answered.
“Oliver?”
“Annabelle, oh god I’ve missed you. How’s everything? How’s sinking Washington?”
I laughed. “Everything is fine, it’s raining, no surprise. I’ve missed you!”
We continued to talk for 15 minutes, and I told him about my new car that sat outside right this very minute. And of course, being a male, he was jealous and started questioning me about the car like I knew anything about it besides how to drive it. He laughed at my obvious lack of knowledge about cars.
“Bye Annabelle. I love you.” he waited.
“See you Oliver” was all I could answer as I hung up.
I sighed, he was a great guy but I didn’t love him. I’m surprised I had even let him in, not very much though, but still even a little bit meant something for me. I didn’t let people in, besides David and Alexis. My own mother wasn’t even in that list. I was reluctant to let him get close to me, I did like him, but not love him and I knew it was obvious.
I decided to take a shower, something to calm me down. It helped, a bit. As the water went cold I quickly turned the water off. Wrapping a towel around myself I opened the bathroom door.
“Annabelle?” David’s voice travelled from the living room.
“DAVID?” A smile of relief broke across my face as I hurried quickly to the front of the house. But it was soon replaced with utter horror.
I stood in front of the living room, a small towel clinging to my body, dripping water all over the floor.
David wasn’t alone, the living room, dining room and kitchen was filled with new faces, 10 I noted not taking in their expression which I presumed would be amusement at my own expense. Oh great, what a first impression I had made. My cheeks blazed hot, and I just turned around and went straight to my room. Laughter filled the small house. “Great”, I whispered to myself, “Just great”.
I pulled on a pair of pants and a tank top, I doubted I’d be cold, the room they were in felt like 80 degrees. I stood at my door, taking a deep breath before turning the handle and making my way back to the living room. The laughter had ceased. I looked around the front of the entire house and all eyes were on me.
“This is Annabelle, my sister” David appeared by my side, smiling widely and I knew it had gone well. There was no more hint of confusion, fear or nerves within his expression and I sighed with relief.
“H-Hi” I managed to say. Of course I was shy but also intimidated by the huge builds of each person who was radiating heat like space heaters.
The oldest looking man stepped forward and raised his hand, “Hi, I’m Sam, Sam Uley”.
I couldn’t help but compare his features to David’s, and you could see the resemblance, of course not saying anything out loud. I just shook his hand. He went around the room introducing me to everyone.” This is Colin, Brady and Seth,” pointing out the three youngest out of the group. “Leah, Embry and Quil”, the girl just glared at me, no friendship there I already presumed, the boys seemed to notice.
“Oh look Leah another female, I’m sure she isn’t a bitch like you” Embry said laughing loudly with Quil. She growled at them a warning but they only stopped with one look from Sam. “This is Jarred, Paul and Jacob.” Jarred smile, Paul managed to do the same with a little bit more reluctance, but the guy whose name was Jacob was staring at me, it made me self conscious as if I had something on my face. All of a sudden he was in front of me, bringing his face down to my level.
“Jacob Black” he held out his hand wanting me to eagerly take it.
I took a step back a little bit surprised by how little space was between me and him. He looked a little hurt as he dropped his hand.
“Sorry”, he mumbled looking down at his feet but his eyes strayed back to me within seconds.
Sam looked at him with an odd expression, and the others realising this did the same, some with shock and others amusement. I didn’t know what to make of it. I looked at Jacob, noticing how good looking he was, his black glossy hair came down to his chin, his skin a deep russet colour. His body which of course was muscled and toned was beautiful, noting that he was the tallest and most muscled compared to the rest. He had deep dark eyes... which of course had been watching me as I had been cheaking him out.
Great.
I felt the heat of my cheeks burn. He only smiled showing a contrasting white against his skin. I looked away but I knew he was still watching me.
“Anyway we should be going and its starting to get late” Sam broke the awkwardness of the whole situation as they all murmured goodbyes and filed out of the little house. Jacob the last one out, never letting me out of his sight, reluctantly turned and shut the door behind him.
“Well, that was um... interesting” I turned to look at David who looked hard in concentration. “David, you alright?” he snapped out of his little trance.
“Oh yeah, sorry just thinking, you know long day...” he started to babble.
“How about something to eat” I asked knowing he would stop immediately.
THE POINT OF THE UNIVERSE
JACOBS POINT OF VIEW
In that one glance, my pain and longing had evaporated. Bella didn’t matter to me anymore in the sense of romance. She would always be my best friend, for now anyway. But that thought that once made me feel like I was dying no longer applied to me. The universe was now centred on her, well my universe anyway and the only thing that was keeping the universe from falling apart was her. Her happiness was my priority, and I would see to that. I would make sure she would smile, give her anything she wanted, anything at all.
She was so beautiful it was killing me to not be able to look at her. Her long black hair, her soft hazel eyes, her small delicate features, her tiny figure under that small towel, a small shudder rocked through my body and I knew I wasn’t cold.
“Jacob?” Sam interrupted my thoughts as we walked towards the forest edge. “Are you alright?”
I was better than alright, I was great, beyond great. I noticed all of them staring at me, wanting to know the change in my mood. I guessed some already figured it out, but the more stupid ones, like Paul for instance gave me a questioning look.
I smiled, a wide smile while stripping off, tying my gray sweatpants to my leg and phasing the instant I was done. All nine minds joined me only seconds later and I felt their realisation.
“OH” was all some of them could say.
Annabelle...
