Chapter 3
Carlisle was sitting on the couch in the living room when Jasper and Edward came down the stairs.
“Mom is scared.” Jasper started before he reached where his father was. “She is scared and worried and alone.”
Carlisle couldn’t understand how his wife could be upset. What had he done to make her so unhappy? Was she really upset because he was working late?
“She is afraid that you are getting close to the new doctor. She keeps thinking about Charles and what he would have done. A wife he wasn’t satisfied with and an intelligent, successful, attractive doctor comes to town – working with her day after day in a tiny office. She doesn’t think she can go on if you decide you want someone else,” Edward murmured, his eyes downcast.
Carlisle couldn’t believe what his sons were saying. What hurt the most, even more than his wife thinking he didn’t love her, was that she was comparing him to her abusive ex-husband.
“I don’t know what to do. This case is big and getting bigger. Two more colleagues are coming up from DC. Our hours are about to get longer. I love your Mom but I can’t abandon the case.”
“Dad?” The three looked up as Alice walked down the stairs. She had been online when she knew that their father would need Jasper and sent him down. Now she joined them.
“We have a few days before the other two doctors get here. There is the basement…?”
Carlisle brightened up. “Will it work, Alice?”
She nodded, “if you propose the idea to Mom and let her help decorate them and promise that it will allow you to spend more time with her and comfort her fears about Dr. Brennan then yes, she’ll agree. You can take the credit Dad. You need it.”
Carlisle kissed his daughter’s forehead before bounding up the stairs.
Jasper and Edward and Alice all exchanged looks before getting Bella, Rosalie, and Emmett. They had a lot of work to do. It was a good thing vampires didn’t sleep.
--
Carlisle entered the bedroom to find the door to his wife’s office was still closed. He sat down on the bed and called out to her gently.
“Esme, love, can I talk to you?”
A few minutes of silence followed and Esme opened the door and stood by the doorframe.
“What do you want, Carlisle. I’m busy.” she muttered curtly, folding her arms stiffly.
Carlisle patted the bed next to him and after hesitating for a few moments Esme came out to sit on the bed with him.
“I know you don’t like the hours I put in. I wasn’t going to suggest this at first but Alice thought of it too and I wanted to at least give you the option. There is the basement to think about. It’s not finished now but if we all put in the effort and your amazing decorating skills then we could have the doctors stay here.
“I would be able to put in work and still be home with you. I think that once you meet Dr. Brennan you will understand that you have nothing to fear. I’m not Charles. I won’t hurt you. You are my love. You are my life.”
Esme gasped.
She didn’t know that she had been so obvious in her fears. But Carlisle was right. He wasn’t her now dead ex husband. He wasn’t Charles. He had never hurt her before and he never would do so intentionally. She smiled at her husband of almost 70 years.
“That is a good idea. Let’s get started.”
--
It was a good thing that vampires didn’t sleep. It only took three days to completely renovate the bare basement into a perfect guest suite. Esme decorated it and rich beiges and calming tans mixed with sunny yellows to create a warm atmosphere.
The next work day Carlisle brought up the subject to Brennan and Booth.
“Where do your colleagues plan on staying when they come up? The hotel only has two rooms and I assume that you are currently occupying them…”
Temperance looked thoughtful. “I hadn’t considered that. I assume Angela and I can share and then…”
“NO!” Booth cut in. “I am not sharing a room with Zack. As much as I have come to tolerate the guy I am not rooming with him,” he finished determinedly.
“Booth, come on, there is nowhere else.”
“But Bones, it’s Zack… he’s well, you know… Zack!”
“Well, actually… my home has a fully furnished guest suite. There is plenty of room and you’re welcome there. It would help out with the case too since we could work more often and be more productive.” Carlisle interrupted the partner’s argument.
“That is very generous of you Dr. Cullen but we couldn’t impose on you like that, could we Booth?”
The two doctors looked at Booth who gave Bones his best puppy dog look with his eyes.
“Please Bones.” he mumbled, his eyes not leaving hers.
“Yes, Temperance, please, I insist. It will help me extremely as I’ve been neglecting my family and it will allow for us to better work on the case as well.” Carlisle added attentively.
Bones sighed, knowing she was beaten.
“Very well, let’s go pack and move.”
“YES!” Booth shouted as the two followed Dr.
Cullen to the tiny “hotel” they were staying in.
--
Carlisle wasn’t kidding when he said that he had the room for the entire Jeffersonian team. After walking out to his own Mercedes S55 AMG while Booth climbed into the driver’s seat of the rented SUV with all of his and Bone’s items the two cars travelled to the Cullen family home.
The house that he led them too was about 20 minutes away and down a narrow dirt road deep in the woods. It was a massive wooden house with large picture windows.
“Let me give you a tour. “ Carlisle said as opening the front door. “This is the main floor. It has the eat in kitchen, the parlour – we almost never use this room but it has Edward’s piano, the formal dining room – I don’t think we’ve ever used this room, and casual living room where most of our free time is spent. The back patio has a pool and hot tub – feel free to use them whenever you wish.
“Down one flight of stairs will take you to a fully finished basement with four bedrooms and four bathrooms, a full eat in kitchen and furnished living room. Those are the guest rooms, feel free to pick which ever you want. Your assistants can take the other two.
“Upstairs from the main floor will bring you to the “kids” floor, as we call it. Emmett and Rosalie share a room as do Edward and Bella. Alice and Jasper each have their own.
“The top floor is my and Esme’s room. Please make yourselves at home, whatever we have is yours. We don’t eat at home all that much so there are only a few non-perishable and basics in the fridge and pantry.” Carlisle paused to send a silent thank you to his youngest daughter.
Bella was the one to think of stocking some food to help them appear more human. It had been so long since the others had eaten that they often forgot humans needed to do so.
“I’ll take you by the grocery store so you pick up anything you like to eat.” he finished, turning to the two partners.
“You have been more than generous, Carlisle, thank you.”
“You’re welcome Temperance. Seeley, kick back, relax, make yourself at home.”
“Carlisle, if you don’t mind my asking, I have a few more questions about your children.” Booth started, looking determined.
“Is it how some share rooms? The townsfolk are a little weary of us and that is one of the reasons. Since most of them are not actually related Esme and I did not discourage, in fact you could say we encouraged, them to form relationships between themselves. We didn’t know how far they would go. Emmett and Rosalie were married last summer.”
“How do you all get along with your ages?” Booth’s curiosity was building.
Carlisle seemed a little hesitant to answer so Brennan continued, “I’m a foster child myself and since I was fifteen when I entered the system I was never adopted. I bounced around between foster homes until I aged out. I’m curious about your desire to adopt older children. And to adopt so many. Very few people could do what you and Esme have done.”
Carlisle smiled.
“It was difficult. I am an orphan myself, as is Esme. We are all orphans. It may be one of the binding factors in our family. We empathize with each other. We understand each other…” he exclaimed, his smile never faltering.
“I wasn’t adopted and was able to throw myself into my school work. By the time I was eighteen I had graduated from medical school and was working on my residency in a Chicago hospital. Edward was one of my patients. His father had contracted a rare viral infection. He gave it to Edward’s mother who in turn given it to Edward. Both Mr. and Mrs. Masen had already passed but by a miracle Edward survived.
“He was 12 at the time and the spokeswoman of the adoption agency gave him a slim chance to be picked for adoption. He was older and a very sick child. I showed interest and because it was unlikely that someone else would I was allowed to adopt him despite my own very young age.
“Edward never saw the inside of a foster home. He’s been with me ever since. We entered a very short difficult time a year later when I met and married Esme. He was afraid that with her entering the family there wouldn’t be room for him. It took a while but by the time we adopted Rosalie, a few months after Esme and I married, Edward was back to his usual self.
“We adopted Rosalie when she was fifteen and Edward was thirteen. They took to each other very quickly in a loving brother/ sister relationship. Edward took my last name of Cullen and while that is Rosalie’s new legal name she prefers to use her old name of Hale.
“Emmett followed very quickly. He was almost old enough to age out. Having just turned 17 he spent most of his youth in and out of Juvenile Hall. He agreed to spend his last year with Esme and me as part of a plea deal. Strict curfew, hold a full time job, and graduate high school with a C average and he wouldn’t do jail time.
“We worked with him but I think it was Rosalie that got to him. In the year that it took him to turn 18 he turned his grades around, followed all our rules, and graduated high school with honors. He just turned 20 and is a truly wonderful person.
“Alice and Jasper came to use at the same time. We went looking for another girl to be friends with Rosalie and found Alice but she didn’t want to leave Jasper, her best friend. We took them both. We didn’t learn until the official adoption that Jasper and Rosalie are actually brother and sister – twins to be exact. They were separated years before. It was very heart-warming to be able to reintroduce them. Jasper also uses Hale as his last name. That was just about 2 and half years ago. Alice was 15 and Jasper was 16.
“Bella is our newest adoptee. She was shy and quiet and didn’t talk when we brought her home just over a year ago. Edward brought her out of her shell and she is happy and bubbly and has an amazing smile. She and Edward are engaged.
“Emmett is our oldest having just turned 20. Next is Jasper and Rosalie are 19. Alice is each 18 and Bella and Edward are 17. The six of them have agreed to go to college together. Esme and I weren’t exactly happy with their decision but they are adults and it’s their choice to make. Emmett said he wasn’t ready and wanted to wait for Rosalie. Jasper also wanted to wait for Alice. By that time they agreed to wait for Edward and Bella too. They all start in August.”
Carlisle finished his tale and looked up with Brennan. The entire Cullen clan plus Booth had gathered around them. Esme was smiling with her arms wrapped around her children.
Even Booth had a silly smile on his face.
Then Brennan’s phone rang and the moment was broken.
--
It was early on the morning that Zack and Angela were supposed to arrive. Brennan and Booth were going to head into the office with Carlisle for a few hours but first Brennan was enjoying the early morning solitude.
She fixed a cup of coffee and wandered out on the back porch, surprised to see Esme out there as well. Instead of turning around, Brennan walked over the matriarch of the Cullen home, who had been welcoming but standoffish towards the intelligent doctor.
“Esme, I’m sorry to bother you, but can I talk to you?”
“Of course Temperance. Make yourself at home.” But keep in mind that it is MY home. She finished silently in her mind.
“Thank you. I know the stress that our being here has placed on you, you’ve been very welcoming.”
An awkward silence settled into place before Brennan couldn’t hold herself back anymore.
“How do you do it? How do you get him to love you so much? How? Teach me!” Esme was shocked.
“How do I do what? Get Carlisle to love me? I don’t know. I love him. Why?”
Brennan sighed.
“I want it too.”
Shock entered Esme’s eyes and Brennan quickly explained further. “Not with Carlisle, but with Booth. I want Seeley to look at me the way Carlisle looks at you.”
Esme sighed and suddenly understood. She’s in love with her partner. Poor dear. Unrequited love. But is it not returned? I’m not so sure…
“I didn’t really do anything. I was myself. I knew my strengths and accepted my faults. Did Carlisle tell you how we met?” Brennan shook her head.
“I was married before Carlisle. My parents married me off when I was very young to an abusive drunk that was old enough to be my father. He beat me one evening to the extent that I needed to go to the hospital. Carlisle was my doctor. He was so disgusted with what happened that he made sure I never had to go back to Charles again.
“I’m not sure what happened while I was in the hospital, all I know is that soon after meeting Carlisle, Charles was dead. Police labelled his death as “accidental.” Carlisle and I married shortly afterwards. I’m sure the way I quickly took to Edward helped as well. How are you with Agent Booth’s son, Parker?”
“I like Parker. I’m awkward with him but I’m awkward with everyone. I thought it was being a foster kid but now that I see your family, how you’ve all overcome being orphaned, I’m starting to think it’s just me.”
Esme moved closer to the doctor.
“No, it’s not. Edward was very awkward. Quiet. Private. Never socialized with anyone outside of family. He didn’t open up until Bella decided she loved him. He tried to push her away but she wouldn’t have it. She wanted him and took him and opened him up. You are a very intelligent and beautiful woman, Temperance. Know your strengths, understand and accept your weaknesses, admit when you are wrong or not as knowledgeable, and never lose sight of what you want. And Agent Booth will fall right into your hands and you into his heart.”
Brennan smiled at Esme, instantly feeling better. A new comfortable silence settled around them as they enjoyed the early morning before the rest of the family woke.

Author’s Note:
To those who are big BONES fans… I know that Bones is a little OOC with her declaration of love for Booth. I can’t help it, I’m a sucker for relationships!! She is not familiar with the concept of love and is just now opening herself up to the idea of loving another person. While I am going to have a little Booth/Bones action I am also going to try **really** hard to keep her in sync with her character (totally blunt with very little tact but at the same time just a little softer around the edges).
